12. Before swinging the backhoe, make sure there is ample room for the swing and that all people are
out of the way.
13. Observe area for any other obstructions such as posts.
14. Be certain bystanders are clear from the backhoe before lowering stabilizers or moving the boom.
15. Be certain that the operator has had sufficient time to become familiar with the controls before
attempting any work with the backhoe.
16. Pay attention to the job at hand. Do not let your mind lose concentration on what you are doing.
Accidental movement of control level or leak in the hydraulic system can cause the backhoe to drop
or unload causing severe damage. Remain alert of the position of bucket, boom and dipperstick
when operating the backhoe.
17. Watch for flying debris, shattered stones and dust. Wear appropriate safety clothing such as a hard
hat, safety goggles and ear plugs.
18. Carry the backhoe low at all times, especially when working on hill side or backing up an incline.
Watch for overhead wires. Never touch wires with any part of the backhoe. Contact with power lines
can cause electrical burn or electrocution. Ensure that there is ample room between any raised part
of backhoe and power lines.
19. Be careful to prevent the unit from tipping sideways if it strikes an excavation, ditch, or other
irregularity, especially on hillsides. The rate of travel on hillsides and curves should always be such
that there is no danger of tipping.
20. When working across slopes, avoid bumps and hollows which may cause the backhoe to be tilted to
a dangerous angle.
21. Avoid sudden braking and reduce speed in turns, on slippery or uneven surfaces.
22. Do not use maximum tractor speed when driving on a slope.
23. Never dismount while the tractor is in motion.
24. When climbing steep grades, do not open the tractor throttle rapidly.
25. Never start the tractor engine from any position other than sitting in the driving seat.
26. Always lower the backhoe bucket and stabilizers to the ground, shut off engine, remove key, and
apply the parking brake before leaving the unit unattended.
27. Never drive the tractor close to the edges of ditches or banks, especially if the ground is loose or
wet.
28. When operating the backhoe, tractor must have sufficient front weight to maintain balance and
safety.
29. Do not attempt to raise the tractor off the ground or move the tractor forward or backward using the
backhoe boom or stabilizers.
30. Be certain area is free from underground obstructions before digging.
31. A barricade should be positioned around work area. Be certain that bystanders and animals are
clear from the work area. Make sure there is ample room for the reach of backhoe to maneuver.
32. Particular caution is necessary when any appliance is used in the vicinity of children, invalids or
elderly people. Children or people with a disability cannot use the device. Keep children away from
the unit.
33. When digging near the tractor, ensure that the bucket does not come to contact with stabilizers
causing damage.
34. Do not dig close to stabilizers; the ground could collapse from under the backhoe.
35. When operating on slopes, when possible, dig with the backhoe uphill and avoid full reach and
swinging the backhoe bucket to the downhill side. This will reduce the stability of the backhoe.
Always dump uphill.
36. Stabilizers must be lowered to the ground before operating the backhoe.
37. Use your backhoe only for digging. Do not use it to pull things, as a battering ram, or attach ropes,
chains, etc., to the unit.
38. Do not operate the backhoe when tractor rear wheel is off the ground near the stabilizers. Position
the vehicle as close as possible to the working area in a way that swinging movement is minimized
39. Do not lift loads in excess of backhoe capacity.
40. The operator must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. They affect operators’ attention,
focus and coordination ability.
