Course contents, modules and examinationsThis course is designed for Ph D students whose research includes different partsof the Baltic Sea region. We will be looking at how memory, the use of historyand different historical turns have moulded the identity, conflicts and worldviewsof the peoples around the Baltic Sea. During the Cold War, the relationsbetween the various countries were often hostile; this contributed to theestrangement of their populations. Today, the relative ignorance of the area’scommon history, both ancient and recent, is a serious problem for researchers inhumanities and social sciences. This course attempts to fill this lacuna inhistorical knowledge, with emphasis on the area’s interrelationships, networksand political and economic relations. The course’s two main goals are to providean overview of the long-term development of the entire area, while allowingstudents to do an in-depth study of the area which focuses on their choice of aparticular period.• Constructing the Baltic Sea Region, 7,5 ECTS creditsGrades permitted: G (pass)5. Course designThe course will proceed along a traditional time axis. It will include discussionsof the assigned reading and nine thematic lectures.The students will write a short essay (15-20 pages). Students can choose towrite either a diachronic essay that focuses on the development of a narrowaspect of Baltic Sea history over a long time, or a synchronic essay that looks atthe entire Baltic Sea area during a short period.6.
