This was a very possible and naturalomission of L, at the conclusion of a page... The scribe of C copied the incompleteword Laecede, just as L left it, with out the same reason for leaving it incomplete, asit does not conclude a skeet, nor come at the end of a line in C". Jest to bystra uwaga.Lecz wobec możliwości istnienia wspólnego archetypu, również taki błąd możnawyjaśnić w sposób naturalny. Bardziej decydujące znaczenie ma jednak to, czego J.Bosworth nie uwzględnił dostatecznie, a mianowicie że poczynając już od tytułu rkp.C ma czasami więcej, czasami mniej wyrazów, ma także niejednokrotnie lepszelekcje. Hisargument is not conclusive, as it rests only on common errors in the two MSS.These, might, however, have been present in a common source. The most striking isLaecede for Laecedemonie, which, since it occurs at the turn of a page (p. 62) in theTollemache MSS., may very probably have originated in this MS., and hencesuggest, that the Cotton MS. is derived from the Tollemache one. This is, however,not sufficient evidence to prove the point, and my own impression is that to assumethe MSS. descent Tollemache-Cotton would involve giving the Cottonian scribecredit for a rather too large number of intelligent corrections. It is wiser to assumethat there was a common exemplar before both scribes, and that is already had thecommon errors of the two extant MSS.
