Creating a global
set of standards is necessary in preparing students for a global economy. According to Wagner: [S]ixty-five percent of
college professors report that what is taught in high school does not prepare students for college. One major reason is
that the tests students must take in high school for state accountability purposes usually measure ninth- or tenth-grade
level knowledge and skills. Being mostly multiple-choice assessments, they rarely ask students to explain their
reasoning or to apply knowledge to new situations?skills that are critical for success in college?and so neither teachers
nor students receive useful feedback about college readiness (Wagner, 2010). In the twenty-first century, mastery of the
basic skills of reading, writing, and math is no longer enough. Increasingly, almost any job that pays more than minimum
wage today?both blue and white collar?requires employees who know how to solve a range of intellectual and technical
problems. Wagner (2010) believes that citizenship in the twenty-first century demands that we all know how to think?to
reason, analyze, weigh evidence, and problem solve. These are no longer skills that only the elites in a society must
master; they are essential survival skills for all of us. In order to accomplish a set of global standards, what types of
global educational policies should be created? Make sure you discuss a minimum of two. What impact will this have on
American education? Guided Response: Analyze your classmates? responses. Provide feedback on the types of
policies they suggested. What other areas should they consider? Be sure to respond to at least two of your classmates.
