Sector aims to increase<br />

exports<br />

We are opening the new season with the world’s most important baby kid<br />

fairs. We follow the fairs exhibiting the newest and most innovative products<br />

and we represent Turkish baby goods and textile industry in many fair<br />

with our own stand. Our first stop in this fair marathon is Kind + Jugend<br />

which will be held in Cologne, Germany between 14 and 17 September.<br />

Then we are in the Fashion Textile Exhibition in Odessa, Ukraine, 22 to 24<br />

September. We are then turning our journey to the CJF Children’s Textiles<br />

and Mir Detstva Children’s Goods fairs to be held in Moscow, 26 to 29<br />

September which prepare to keep the industry’s pulse. We will continue<br />

to represent you at all national and international points, which will benefit<br />

the sector.<br />

Based on our interview with the Ministry of Customs and Commerce, we<br />

see that the baby-kid industry has gained an upward momentum in recent<br />

years. Turkey continues to be the focus of foreign countries with its<br />

developing economy and investments. The share of baby-kid products in<br />

our total exports in 2015 was 0.73%, 0.70% in 2016 and 0.64% in 2017.<br />

<strong>Exports</strong> are expected to increase further until the end of the year.<br />

We have taken the evaluations of the quality of the Turkish products and<br />

the situation in the industry from the important actors of the sector which<br />

stand out with the identity of the producer. With its annual birth rates and<br />

young population, Turkey is among the world’s most noticeable countries.<br />

There are a large number of imported and domestic products which will<br />

meet this potential. However, Turkey has successfully moved its domestic<br />

production to the rest of the world by getting rid of its borders and crossing<br />

the borders of the country. At this point, we, as <strong>Baby</strong> & <strong>Kid</strong> Store family<br />

are proud to be a bridge to the sector. We are always with you in the promising<br />

and developing baby child sector.<br />

Turkey’s industrial production sees<br />

year-on-year increase in June<br />

ANKARA-Turkey’s industrial production advanced<br />

3.4 percent in June 2017 compared to the same<br />

month last year, the Turkish Statistical Institute<br />

(TÜİK) announced.<br />

Turkey’s industrial output is deemed a vital indicator<br />

for the economy as it is seen as a preliminary gauge<br />

for GDP growth.<br />

On an annual basis, the manufacturing index saw<br />

the biggest rise in June, up 3.8 percent, among all<br />

three main sub-indices, TÜİK said.<br />

In the same period, the electricity, gas, steam, and<br />

air-conditioning supply index also increased by 2.5<br />

percent while the mining and quarrying index decreased<br />

by 0.5 percent.<br />

Meanwhile, the country’s industrial production declined<br />

by 0.4 percent in June on a monthly basis, TÜİK<br />

noted.<br />

In June, the mining and quarrying index rose by 1.2<br />

percent while the electricity, gas, steam, air-conditioning<br />

supply, and manufacturing indices fell by 0.6<br />

percent and 0.5 percent, respectively.<br />

Turkish firms bag<br />

$220B projects<br />

overseas in 10 years<br />

ANKARA-The business volume of Turkish contractors<br />

worldwide reached approximately $220 billion during<br />

the last 10 years, according to data from the Economy<br />

Ministry.<br />

The contractors ranked second in the world after China,<br />

taking up 4,152 projects overseas between 2008<br />

and 2017.<br />

The first contracted project was carried out in Libya in<br />

1972; since then until the last July Turkish firms have<br />

carried out 9,018 projects in 117 countries, totaling<br />

$344.7 billion in business volume.<br />

The average project cost was $37.1 million in 2008,<br />

which doubled to $79.3 million in July this year.<br />

Russia ranked first with $67.6 billion (19.6 percent)<br />

among projects carried out in the last 45 years. This<br />

was followed by Turkmenistan with $46.8 billion<br />

(13.6-pct) and Libya with $28.9 billion (8.4-pct).<br />

Turkish contractors were mostly involved in construction<br />

projects of highways, tunnels and bridges that<br />

were valued at $44.1 billion. Housing projects came<br />

in second with $43.7 billion, while commercial center<br />

projects ranked third with $29.1 billion.<br />

In 2008, 23 Turkish firms were in the list of top 250<br />

contractors in the world, according to the Engineering<br />

News Record, which is a leading magazine specializing<br />

in the contracting sector; the number of Turkish<br />

firms rose to 40 by 2016, seven of which were among<br />

the top 100 while for the first time two Turkish firms<br />

ranked in the top 50 companies with revenues more<br />

than $3 billion.<br />

Turkish products reveals with its quality in the baby kid sector<br />

An average of 1.250 million babies a year are opening<br />

their eyes to the world. According to the statistics of the<br />

Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), last year, nearly<br />

1 million 310 babies in Turkey came to the world. Attracting<br />

attention with its young population, Turkey has the<br />

advantage of having the most young population of Europe<br />

with the population of 0-14 years being more than 19 million.<br />

As a result, spending on infants and children is also<br />

high ... This also shows that the baby and baby supplies<br />

sector is promising. For babies, the parents spend an<br />

average of $ 60-70 per month for babies up to 3 years old<br />

percent in approximately $ 17 billion in total apparel<br />

Fashion Days’ organized by BTSO in the scope of the<br />

International Competition Development (Ur-Ge) project<br />

and KOSGEB-sponsored Kuresel Fuar Agency was held<br />

with great participation in Moscow. 75 companies from<br />

Bursa had found opportunity to exhibit their products with<br />

the stands they have opened in Moscow in the organization,<br />

which was the largest international B2B meeting never<br />

existed before. Hundreds of business meetings were held<br />

in the event, which Russian companies attached great<br />

BTSO Vice-President İsmail Kus said that they have managed<br />

Ahmet Mustafa Isikcan, owner of AKM Textile Company,<br />

opened a stand in the scope of the organization and stated<br />

that they wanted to come to a more effective position<br />

in the Russian market and said, “We have realized very<br />

productive negotiations. We expect such events to continue<br />

in the coming period.”<br />

Ayse Akgul, owner of Kardelya <strong>Baby</strong> Company, said, “We<br />

had previously exported to Russia with brokerage firms.<br />

We now have the opportunity to directly export within<br />

Ministry of Economy for the studies carried out in this context.”<br />

On the other hand, Deputy Minister of Investments and<br />

Innovations of the Moscow Region Nadezhda Karisalova<br />

met with a delegation, including Moscow Chamber of<br />

Commerce and Industry, at the World Trade Center where<br />

BTSO Vice-President İsmail Kus and BTSO Assembly<br />

members held B2B meetings. Celebrating the Bursa<br />

business world for his vision, Karisalova said, “Here is a<br />

a lot. Turkey and Russia are friends and partners of two<br />

Moscow Turkish Trade Centre<br />

Bursa Chamber of Commerce and Industry leading its<br />

members to success in the hearth of world trade, is getting<br />

ready to make one more move to give acceleration<br />

for trade in Bursa. A new unit of the Turkish Trade Centre,<br />

which operates in New York in cooperation with the Ministry<br />

of Economy and the Turkish Exporters Assembly<br />

(TIM), will be presented to the representatives of the Bursa<br />

business world in Moscow, the capital city of Russia.<br />

BTSO members who went to Russia for B2B meetings<br />

had the opportunity to closely examine the preparations<br />

on 32,000 square meter area, where textile, apparel, furniture<br />

and leather sectors will be located.<br />

Program held in Russia goes on at full steam within the<br />

International Competitiveness Development Projects (Ur-<br />

Ge). BTSO Members of Board of Directors, Mr. Hasan<br />

Gürses, Mr. Nuri Körüstan and Mr. Şükrü Çekmişoğlu as<br />

well as Bursa Delegation visited Turkish Trade Centre<br />

to be established. Companies operating in the textile,<br />

ready-wear, leather and furniture sectors will have parts<br />

in Moscow Turkish Trade Centre located on the land of<br />

32.000 m2 in total. Companies can rent offices taking<br />

almost 100 square meters space in the centre in which<br />

8.000 square meters space will be assigned for each<br />

sector. Companies will find the opportunities to rent<br />

showrooms for 7.5 Euro per square meter thanks to support<br />

given in the centre such as rent, promotion and office<br />

design at the rate of 75%.<br />

Mr. Omer Vural, Representative of Fabra Tekstil, who<br />

made evaluations on Turkish Trade Centre, stated that<br />

the opportunities offered would be a great advantage for<br />

them. Vural said “an important project to promote export<br />

will be carried into effect. I would like to thank BTSO for its<br />

service offered to Bursa business world.”<br />

Mr. Cemal Eyüpoglu, one of the stakeholders of Melodi<br />

Company, stated that he participated in informative meetings<br />

about the Trade Centre which will be opened to serve<br />

Bursa business world in Moscow, said “Having visited<br />

this place, we had much more positive thoughts. I would<br />

like to thank the BTSO, who has carried the crucial projects<br />

into effect to introduce our industry to the world and<br />

support them. “<br />

Mr. Mehmet Deniz, Business Manager of Minimi Deniz<br />

Company, said that Turkish Trade Centre provide them<br />

with low-priced chances. Mr. Deniz thanked BTSO so<br />

much and said “The centre is roomy. It will provide us with<br />

chance to trade with low prices.”<br />

Mr. Hasan Gürses, BTSO Member of Board of Directors<br />

and head of committee, said “After the military and political<br />

in 2016. He also mentioned that he believes that Ur-Ge<br />

activities will enhance Turkey’s efficiency in Russian<br />

An exclusive interview with Mr. Bülent TÜFENKCİ, Minister of<br />

Customs and Trade of Turkey.<br />

Having a wide variety, health and quality products on one<br />

hand and competitive conditions on the other, Turkey’s<br />

baby and kid product industry is performing excellent both<br />

at home and abroad. The government has been providing<br />

charming incentives and supporting industrialization and<br />

employment. We asked all details about the industry to<br />

Mr. Bülent TÜFENKCİ, Minister of Customs and Trade of<br />

Turkey.<br />

What is the total volume of exports of baby and kids<br />

products from Turkey and their shares in total exports<br />

of the country?<br />

<strong>Baby</strong> and kids products are mentioned under variety of<br />

positions in our tariff lists. So, they are scattered into several<br />

categories. Apparels for infants and small children,<br />

nursing teats, closet for children, pacifiers, apparels, accessories,<br />

knitted and crochet, hanging baby carriers, clothing<br />

and shoes for girls and boys are mentioned separately.<br />

Cars, toys are in 87.15, baby diapers in 96.19, seats,<br />

chairs for children are mentioned in 94.03, etc.<br />

<strong>Exports</strong> of these items were 1.056 million in 2015, 0.999<br />

million in 2016, and 575 million in the first nine months of<br />

2017. Shares of exports in total exports were, 0.73 %, 0.7<br />

% and 0.69 % respectively.<br />

According to TUIK data, the five largest export markets for<br />

Turkish made baby and kids textiles and other products<br />

were Iraq, Iran, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan and Syria during<br />

As we know, Council of Ministers approved the special<br />

passport also referred to as green passport act may<br />

be provided to certain exporters.<br />

When will the act be operational?<br />

With an aim to facilitate their business contacts and visits<br />

to foreign countries, the Council of Ministers released a<br />

declaration that exporters contributing to the economy of<br />

our country can be awarded by getting Green Passport<br />

if they comply certain conditions. The act was published<br />

in the Official Gazette dated 23 March 2017 and enacted<br />

into force. According to this, depending on the amount of<br />

exports they made in the last three calendar years, one to<br />

five managers of the exporting companies determined by<br />

the Ministry of Economy have been given the right to be<br />

issued green passports for two years.<br />

Since then, about five thousand people of the 4,105 applicant<br />

companies were given green passport.<br />

Are there any differences in terms of exports and<br />

customs formalities among the countries that Turkish<br />

exporters are active?<br />

I can say that in those countries that their customs were<br />

modernized and having global standards cause minimal<br />

problems in this regard. The agreement to facilitate trade<br />

that was recently signed may be a good motive for further<br />

developments. Besides, the customs union agreement<br />

signed in 1995 between EU and free trade agreement<br />

between several countries are helpful all to our export<br />

activities.<br />

What kinds of systems are effective in controlling<br />

e-trade operations?<br />

With its 46.2 million internet users, our country has a higher<br />

potential for e-trade than most other countries. But, due to<br />

the some security risks, share of on-line retail trade in Turkey<br />

is about 3.5 %, less than the global average of 8.5 %.<br />

When the decree for security stamp in electronic trade that<br />

was issued in Official Gazette on 06.06.2017 started to be<br />

used the service and security standards will be improved<br />

more.<br />

With the additional measures, data security will be improved,<br />

service qualities will be increased, and a customer<br />

relations and complaints system will be operational to improve<br />

customer services provided in e-trade operations.<br />

Recently enacted incentives and supports for companies<br />

who emphasize on domestic productions make national<br />

producers and exporters happy. Are there other<br />

activities in this regard? Do you have new projects?<br />

<strong>Product</strong>ion and trade cannot be separated from each other.<br />

We aim to connect them with facilitate activities of both<br />

producers and traders. Recently, we are developing some<br />

projects for agricultural products, to facilitate the operations<br />

in supply chains by establishing specialized trade exchanges,<br />

licensed warehouses, etc. With additional incentives<br />

number of warehouses and their capacities have been<br />

expanded and reach to an optimum level by the year 2020.<br />

With this system, our country will be a powerful player in<br />

agricultural goods trade in world markets.<br />

baby equipment!<br />

While baby equipment is one of the most costly areas in baby products, it is one of the fastest growing sectors. Parents<br />

are following the products renewed each year and supported by technological infrastructure. Another sector which follows<br />

is baby and child furniture...<br />

The research shows that the total size of<br />

the baby supplies and furnitures market size is<br />

approximately TL 650 million. Turkey has<br />

an important potential for baby equipment<br />

in terms of its growing economy and<br />

growing population.<br />

When baby equipment considered,<br />

baby cars are placed on the top. Today,<br />

we can say that the market size of<br />

baby car used by every parent who owns<br />

a baby is around 40 million. Approxi-<br />

mately 350 thousand baby cars per year<br />

are being purchased in our country.<br />

Imported products that are active in the<br />

market are followed by domestic<br />

brands with new investments made.<br />

There are important brands in this<br />

area. These are the most preferred ones<br />

in our country; Beneto, Dalpa, Koala<br />

and Vatan Çocuk Gereçleri.<br />

On the other hand, there is an unde-<br />

niable fact that the share of imported products<br />

in this area is considerably higher<br />

the import of baby car in Turkey in the last<br />

five years is approximately 194 million dollars.<br />

Bringing its all production locations together with its new<br />

plant which came into operation in April, the brand has new<br />

production facility of 15,000 m 2 production and storage<br />

space. Noting that they respond best increasing demand in<br />

A complete overview of children’s fashions, an extraordinary<br />

platform for presenting the new lifestyle trends for kids. Greater<br />

energy and creativity in childrens fashion and lifestyle collections:<br />

the attendance levels recorded are very optimistic. The<br />

numbers of foreign buyers are up, with positive performances<br />

from Russia, China, The Netherlands, Belgium, Ukraine. While<br />

there is a slight decrease for the Italians.<br />

Positive feedback for international junior fashion at Pitti Bimbo,<br />

boding well for next season’s orders and sales. All the most important<br />

international and Italian children’s fashion buyers were at<br />

the Fortezza da Basso, curious to discover all the latest innovative<br />

ideas presented by the 548 brands that were the protagonists<br />

of this edition.<br />

The final attendance figures recorded a slight yet comforting<br />

increase in foreign buyers, with very positive performances by<br />

markets like Russia (+16%), China (+45%), Netherlands (+25%),<br />

Ukraine (+24%) and Austria (+22%); there was also growth from<br />

Germany, Brazil, Portugal and the countries in the Middle Eastern<br />

area; there was substantial confirmation of the buyer figures<br />

from France and United States, whilst there was a slight drop<br />

in the numbers for Spain, United Kingdom, Turkey and Greece;<br />

Italian buyers fell by around 8%, continuing the trend that also<br />

emerged a week ago at Pitti Uomo.<br />

Overall the fair was attended by more than 5,300 buyers – just<br />

under the result recorded a year ago, with the total number of<br />

visitors reaching around 10,000.<br />

“There was a decisively positive atmosphere at the Fortezza”,<br />

says Raffaello Napoleone, CEO of Pitti Immagine, “in the stands<br />

we witnessed a succession of business meetings, presentations<br />

and events for buyers and press characterized by a widespread<br />

feeling of confidence. A lot of appreciation was also expressed<br />

for the special participations, the returns and the launches hosted<br />

at this edition – including Dolce & Gabbana and Roberto<br />

Cavalli Junior with their projects and events and the launch of<br />

Emilio Pucci childrenswear line - all of which were of a very high<br />

profile. There were also many positive comments about the new<br />

projects and the sections dedicated to research and lifestyle<br />

which, season after season, expand the boundaries of the kids’<br />

universe”.<br />

was once again Russia (207 buyers), followed by China (181),<br />

Four HKTDC Fairs attract close to 120,000 Global Buyers<br />

Gathering some 3,300 global exhibitors, the HKTDC Hong<br />

Kong Toys & Games Fair, HKTDC Hong Kong <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s<br />

Fair, Hong Kong International Stationery Fair and<br />

HKTDC Hong Kong International Licensing Show – attracted<br />

a total of close to 120,000 buyers, up two per cent over<br />

last year. The Toys & Games Fair, <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s Fair and<br />

Stationery Fair concluded today, while the Licensing Show<br />

closed. More than 46,000 buyers visited the Toys & Games<br />

Fair; the <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s Fair attracted over 30,000 buyers;<br />

the Stationery Fair welcomed close to 21,000 buyers; and<br />

over 21,000 visitors came to the Licensing Show.<br />

HKTDC Acting Executive Director Benjamin Chau said the<br />

four concurrent fairs at the Hong Kong Convention and<br />

Exhibition Centre attracted a record number of exhibitors<br />

and welcomed more global buyers, creating a vibrant atmosphere<br />

at the venue. “For the Toys & Games Fair, <strong>Baby</strong><br />

<strong>Product</strong>s Fair and Stationery Fair, the number of buyers<br />

from mature markets such as the United States, Canada,<br />

Japan and Korea recorded growth, while those from Belgium,<br />

Spain and Taiwan recorded a double-digit percentage<br />

increase. Meanwhile, buyers from emerging markets<br />

including Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Israel and<br />

Iran also recorded a double-digit percentage increase, and<br />

there is steady growth in the number of buyers from the<br />

Chinese mainland.” Mr Chau also said that in response to<br />

buyers sourcing in smaller lots, the hktdc.com Small Orders<br />

zone returned to the Toys & Games Fair and <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s<br />

Fair featuring more than 120 showcases with around<br />

1,200 products for buyers to place orders of between five<br />

and 1,000 pieces. More than 6,500 buyers visited the zone<br />

and over 12,000 business connections were generated<br />

during the four days.<br />

High-tech products and smart living trend<br />

A wide range of innovative products was showcased at<br />

the Toys & Games Fair, <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s Fair and Stationery<br />

Fair to meet the sourcing needs of buyers. The Toys<br />

& Games Fair featured the Smart-Tech Toys zone, which<br />

showcased various toys and games applying innovative<br />

technologies, such as the increasingly popular augmented<br />

reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) technologies as well as<br />

products operated via mobile apps.<br />

Over at the <strong>Baby</strong> <strong>Product</strong>s Fair, the <strong>Baby</strong> Tech zone drew<br />

a lot of interest from visitors. Hong Kong exhibitor Binatone<br />

Electronics International Ltd is the official licensee<br />

of Motorola Mobility products and is launching a Smart<br />

Nursery series this year. Joey Cheung, the company’s<br />

Sales Director – Asia Pacific, said that the fair attracts<br />

a lot of quality buyers every year and is a great place to<br />

promote new products and enhance relationships with<br />

customers worldwide. He added that they had met with<br />

customers from Japan, Sweden, Russia, the Middle East<br />

and Southeast Asia. They also expanded their business<br />

relationship with a Japanese buyer whom they first met at<br />

last year’s fair.<br />

Exhibitors exploring new market<br />

Hong Kong exhibitor Eastcolight (Hong Kong) Ltd. has<br />

joined the Toys & Games Fair for many years. This year<br />

they exhibited a smart galaxy tracker telescope. Johnny<br />

Sze, Director and Vice General Manager of the company,<br />

said that they connected with buyers from the US, Russia,<br />

India and Southeast Asia. He expects orders received<br />

from the US at this year’s fair to increase 10 per cent<br />

compared to last year.<br />

Nearly 300 companies from 8 countries, that showcased<br />

a wide range of products for children manufactured by<br />

domestic companies and famous foreign brands, participated<br />

in BABY EXPO 2016.<br />

In 2016, BABY EXPO significantly increased its performance<br />

compared to the previous year – its display space<br />

has almost doubled, while the number of specialists, who<br />

visited the trade fair, increased by half.<br />

as products for creativity, hobby, leisure and sports. Exactly<br />

this exposition featured a record number of product<br />

innovations this year.<br />

Participants of children’s fashion fair BABY Fashion demonstrated<br />

new children’s clothing and footwear collections<br />

of domestic and foreign production for Spring-Summer<br />

2016, Fall-Winter 2016/17 seasons. A special feature<br />

of BABY Fashion Spring is demonstration of a wide range<br />

of school uniform. By tradition, the Contest “School Uniform<br />

2016” was held within its framework. This year’s<br />

innovation was an equipped “School Uniform” showroom,<br />

where every visitor could immediately evaluate not only<br />

the appearance, but also the quality of fabrics, accessories,<br />

as well as fabrication and decoration peculiarities.<br />

Demonstrations of fashionable children’s clothing – Fashion<br />

Show – were held within the framework of the trade fair<br />

on March 22-23.<br />

BABY EXPO’s program traditionally included events that<br />

contribute to the improvement of business efficiency. A<br />

number of workshops for owners and top managers of<br />

shops were held on March 22-24, namely the conference<br />

for online store owners, mini-conferences for the manufacturers<br />

Hosting people from different ethnic groups, Turkey is a unique heritage<br />

because it is built on the oldest land of history...<br />

The Republic of Turkey is a fascinating jumble of cultures<br />

Teetering on the brink of both Europe and Asia, Turkey<br />

Travel to Mysterious Ancient Cities<br />

Derinkuyu, Turkey is the largest and deepest of 200<br />

underground cities in the Cappadocia region, this eerie<br />

location was home to approximately 20,000 people (plus<br />

livestock, a church, school and kitchen). The inhabitants<br />

dug tunnels and rooms beneath their homes in the soft<br />

volcanic rock.<br />

The city reportedly grew to 85 metres and 11 levels deep.<br />

It is believed to date back to the early Byzantine Empire,<br />

as early as the 7th-8th centuries.<br />

Catalhoyuk, Turkey is believed to be one of the world’s<br />

earliest urban settlements, thousands of people called Catalhoyuk<br />

home in 7400BC - 6200BC. And they did things<br />

quite differently to us.<br />

In a unique design, the city was built like a honeycomb,<br />

with walls shared between different houses and doors<br />

cut in the roof so people had to climb on top to get inside.<br />

What’s more, the dead were buried in the floor of their<br />

homes.<br />

Ranging from snow dusted mountains to fine sandy beaches<br />

lapped by bright turquoise water, it offers diverse environments<br />

which are perfect for a range of activities from<br />

trekking to diving and even skiing.<br />

Explore the architectural beauty of its mosques and churches,<br />

browse the wares in the bazaars then give your body<br />

the ultimate clean in the hammam, those steamy Turkish<br />

baths. Or witness the twirling rhythmic meditation of the<br />

Sufis otherwise known as the Whirling Dervishes.<br />

To the southeast Turkey borders Syria and further east,<br />

Iraq, then Iran and Armenia, with the former Soviet Union<br />

member of Georgia to the northeast. Travellers to these<br />

areas will feel the influence of this disparate set of neighbours<br />

who make their cultural flavours felt. Having said<br />

that, the Turkish language is the mother tongue for around<br />

85% of the population and ethnic Turks comprise 75%,<br />

with the vast majority of the population being of the Muslim<br />

faith.<br />

Turkey is a country of contrasting landscapes and immense<br />

population of 13.5 million, its city centre is one of the most<br />

populated in the world. The ‘centre’, of course, has to be<br />

a relative term for a city split by the mighty Bosphorus – a<br />

strait that forms part of the division between the continents<br />

of Europe and Asia - with two thirds living on the<br />

European side, where the main historical and commerce<br />

areas are found. While the geography literally lends itself<br />

to the ‘East meets West’ tag, the city formerly known as<br />

Constantinople, couldn’t be more cosmopolitan.<br />

However superficially, Istanbul resembles a city that has<br />

built enough landmarks for another thousand years. Visiting<br />

Sultanahmet (Istanbul’s Old City) first, as most first-time<br />

visitors do, you’ll be amazed at the sights such as the<br />

magnificent Hagia Sofia, a one-time Byzantine cathedral<br />

converted to a mosque in 1453 and lavishly appointed<br />

with mosaics and frescoes. Islam is also beautifully represented<br />

with the Sultan Ahmed, or Blue Mosque, dating to<br />

1609. While the mosque is a site for worship, the grassy<br />

park adjacent is a site for family picnics.<br />

The city was made the capital of Rome in the year 330<br />

and named Constantinapolis and, after Rome was divided<br />

into two parts as the Eastern Rome and Western Rome, it<br />

was made the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. Finally,<br />

when the Ottomans captured Byzantium in the year<br />

1453, Istanbul was converted into the capital of the Ottoman<br />

Empire. Many historical works of art showing traces<br />

of these empires, have been able to survive up to date.<br />

The obelisks belonging to the Roman period, which were<br />

used as ornaments of the public square Sultanahmet, are<br />

still maintained in their places today. One of these is the<br />

obelisk which Theodosius I had ordered to be brought<br />

from Egypt in the year 390; it is 18.54 m (61 ft) in height<br />

and seems magnificent today with the hieroglyph scripture<br />

on it. Another column which is seen here is the braided<br />

column with a height of 20.68 m (68 ft), which Constantinus<br />

VII had ordered to be erected in the year 944. The<br />

third column, formed by three winding snakes, was ordered<br />

to be brought from the Temple of Apollon in Delphi in<br />

the year 360 by Constantinus I.<br />

The most important historical remain belonging to Byzantium<br />

is Hagia Sophia. Justinianus had this most magnificent<br />

temple of the world constructed between the years<br />

532-537 in the place of a temple which had existed there<br />

formerly, and it contains very valuable mosaics and is still<br />

visited as a museum today. St. Irene located at its side<br />

which Justinianus had ordered to be constructed in the<br />

year 537, is also being used as a museum today. The<br />

monastery of Chora, which attracts attention owing to the<br />

mosaic art works inside, and the mosque of Fethiye are<br />

also historical works of art belonging to Byzantium and<br />

being visited as museums at present.<br />

When Istanbul was conquered by Fatih Sultan Mehmet<br />

in 1453, the buildings of Byzantium were repaired and<br />

new ones were built, and the architectural activities were<br />

continued. For example, the magnificent Topkapi Palace<br />

the domicile of the Sultan and center of government administration,<br />

was constructed. The palace which was built<br />

between the years 1472-1478, later acquired the identity<br />

of a great city of 700,000 sqm owing to the extensions<br />

which the other sultans ordered to be made and to its<br />

population exceeding 10,000. It is a magnificent museum<br />

today which contains the seraglio and where the treasures<br />

belonging to the Ottoman Empire are exhibited.<br />

The Dolmabahce Palace was constructed during the years<br />

1843-1853 and the Ottoman sultans started to live in<br />

it. Sultan Abdulaziz had the Palace of Beylerbeyi Palace<br />

constructed on the opposite shore of the Bosphorus<br />

between the years 1861-1865. Besides these palaces,<br />

which are used as museums at present, many buildings<br />

which have survived until today such as the Kiosks named<br />

Kucuksu, Chalet, Malta and Aynalikavak, are also open<br />

to visitors and are used as museums. In addition to these<br />

palaces, many historical mosques, which form the silhouette<br />

of Istanbul, are also places worthy of visiting.<br />
