Inuit Crown Partnership Committee Meets in Nain<br />

ᒪᑭᕕᒃ ᕿᒥᕐᕈᐊᖏᑦ<br />

The capital of Nunatsiavut, Nain, had special guests in their community<br />

on September 29, 2017. The Inuit Crown Partnership Committee (ICPC)<br />

met in Nain – this Committee consists of Inuit Nunangat leaders and<br />

federal cabinet ministers, including the Honourable Carolyn Bennett,<br />

Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs.<br />

Also in attendance representing the Government of Canada was<br />

the Honourable Jane Philpott, Minister of Indigenous Services; the<br />

ᐃᓄᐃᑦ ᑲᕙᒪᒃᑯᓗ ᐱᓇᓱᖃᑎᒌᓐᓂᒧᑦ ᑲᑎᒪᔨᖏᑦ ᑲᑎᒪᔨᖃᕐᐳᑦ ᐃᓄᐃᑦ<br />

ᓯᕗᓕᕐᑎᖏᓐᓂᒃ ᑕᕐᕋᒥ ᐊᒻᒪᓗ ᑲᕙᒪᑐᖃᒃᑯᑦ ᑐᕐᖃᑕᕐᕕᑯᖏᓐᓂᒃ.<br />

The Inuit Crown Partnership Committee is made up of Inuit leaders<br />

of the North and Federal Government Ministers.<br />

Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social<br />

Development; the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of the<br />

Environment and Climate Change Canada; and the Honourable Ginette<br />

Petitpas-Taylor, Minister of Health. Representing the Minister of Canadian<br />

Heritage was Parliamentary Secretary Arif Virani who attended as an<br />

observer. Finally, the Parliamentary Secretary Yvonne Jones (CIRNA),<br />

Member of Parliament for Labrador, was also an observer.<br />

<strong>Makivik</strong> President Jobie Tukkiapik sits on this Committee<br />

on behalf of Nunavik. Observing also on behalf of Nunavik was<br />

<strong>Makivik</strong> Treasurer Andy Pirti and <strong>Makivik</strong> Corporate Secretary<br />

Adamie Padlayat.<br />

ICPC is part of Canada’s effort towards reconciling the<br />

relationship between the Crown and Inuit of Canada. This<br />

Committee meets to advance the priorities of Inuit living in Canada<br />

through policy development and related funding. The very first<br />

ICPC meeting was in February 2017 in Ottawa.<br />

<strong>Issue</strong>s discussed included housing, tuberculosis (developing a<br />

strategy to fight the continued crisis of this illness), early childhood<br />

development, education, the environment and the impacts of<br />

climate change with the commitment of implementing a joint<br />

working plan for environmental sustainability across the four<br />

Inuit regions of Canada.
