Book club
Half a dozen lovely reads, and one delicious rosé
Fiona Walker is right up there at the top of
our favourite chick-lit authors. Big, fat reads
crammed with farmhouses and horses and
hanky-panky. Country Lovers is 595 pages of
sheer joy. The perfect Valentine’s read. Head
Zeus, R315.
Old lies. New loves. Double lives. All set on
an island in the Caribbean. Elin Hilderbrand’s
What Happens in Paradise is just the thing
for a lazy summer afternoon read on the
lounger. Hodder & Stoughton, R325
Cathy Kelly’s another fave ... her books are
warm and witty and just wonderful. The
Family Gift is the story of a big, messy,
and wonderful family, a glamorous and
manipulative ex-wife, a new house in the
country (with a name, not a number!) ...
and of Mildred (that nagging inner critic
who tells us we’re not good enough).
Orion, R285.
A movie goddess with two Oscars, four
husbands, a whole string of lovers, and a story
to tell. Add a loving stepson, a beautiful and
talented ghost writer and a few dangerous
secrets and you’ve got Nora Roberts at her
best. Genuine Lies is her latest thriller-comelove-story
... and it’s fab. Little Brown, R195.
In Bruce Holsinger’s The Gifted School, a
group of close friends and their children are
living harmoniously in a peaceful, privileged
community. But when a gifted school, with
just a few prestigious places, opens, there’s
suddenly fierce competition ... and things
quickly turn sour. Headline, R325.
Lies Lies Lies. Adele Parks’ latest novel is all
happy families and perfect marriages. On the
surface. But add alcohol, secrets and lies, and
you’ve got a disaster just waiting to happen.
Dark and moody and a fabulous twist. HQ /
Harper Collins, R318.
The prettiest, pinkest, most delish rosé is what we’re wanting this Valentine’s Day ... and
we found it. The 2019 vintage of Perlé de Jean is all ripe, fresh berries, citrus zest and
melon, and a froth of tiny bubbles. It’s magnificent with prawns (our meal of choice on
the 14th), but lovely, too, with chicken and summer salads. You’ll find it for around R69.99
at Checkers, Makro, Food Lover’s Market and selected Spar & Tops@Spar stores.
fizz is perfect for those
who’re avoiding alcohol
… a slice of grapefruit,
a sprig of thyme, loads of
ice and you’ve a refreshing
mocktail. For those who like
a little merriment in their
glass, it’s also really great
with premium vodka or
tequila. And it’s sensational
for a crisp, refreshing G&T.
Beauty with a purpose
Sasha-Lee Olivier, Miss South Africa 2019, is by her own account a born and bred
Albertonian. We catch up with her after her journey to Miss World in London.
She was born in Eden Park,
moved with her family to
Palm Ridge and finally
spent time growing up in
Brackendowns.
Sasha-lee attended
Glenview Primary and
went to Bracken High.
According to Sasha-Lee,
when she was younger she
aspired to compete in the Miss
South Africa competition, but her reasons
for doing so changed over the years.
“When I was young, what I saw was a kind
princess and thought I wanted to be her,”
said Sasha-Lee.
“As you grow up you realise the
responsibility that comes with it and then
you try to align what you stand for with
that responsibility. I think you decide to do
it not for yourself, but for those people you
stand for,” she said.
As a child she preferred playing outside or
playing video games over make-up and
dressing up.
Sasha-Lee eventually joined the Miss South
Africa competition because she wanted to
set an example for young girls. “I wanted
to show them that it is okay to be a size 36,”
said Sasha-Lee. “I think it is so important
to show them that there is strength in
overcoming things in your life.”
Sasha-Lee described the journey of Miss
South Africa as an experience of a lifetime.
“When I first got the call that I was a
finalist I thought it must be a prank. I can’t
describe the feeling when I realised it was
actually happening. It’s the one where you
realise that every decision you made, every
failure, every good thing that happened,
it has all taken its place and you are where
you want to be.”
Sasha-Lee said she took special care to
fully experience and live in each moment
during the journey. “We are so futureoriented
and I wanted to take it one day at
a time. There were highs and lows and we
were being tested. It was my first chance to
have a platform where I could open up and
share what I stand for.”
She recently had the privilege of
representing South Africa at Miss World
12 Get It Joburg South February 2020
Pageant in London. “It’s been a thrilling journey, being offered the chance to travel abroad
– a first for me – and take part in the world’s most prestigious competition.
For me, the most important part of all of this has been the Miss World Beauty with a
Purpose campaign that every entrant is expected to have.
I was sexually abused. I believed that I was somehow complicit in the abuse that was
being done to me, and suffered greatly from a deep sense of shame as a result.
It is why I have chosen to support, inspire and help girls, boys, women and men who have
had a similar experience to me as part of my Miss World ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ campaign.
I have used #ItsNotYourFault as my slogan so that those who have suffered sexual assault
can know that they are not to blame for the violence that is perpetrated against them.
I am so grateful to be able to use the very public platform that Miss World provides to
bring solace to women (and men) who are survivors of sexual assault. Beauty with a
Purpose is a separate category of the Miss World competition and the winner of this
segment will have her campaign supported by the organisation for the year of her reign.
Going forward, I do not want this to be merely a one-year thing. I want to continue this
journey as I walk through life. As part of my campaign, I am reaching out to people who
are reporting a sexual attack at police stations, when they are at their most vulnerable.
I am determined to assist women and men on an emotional level because I know the
trauma they are going through.
I have joined forces with Penny Stein and the Angel Network. They will help me locate
sexual abuse survivors, and distribute Rape Comfort Packs to them. This is a crucial part
of my #ItsNotYourFault campaign. I hope these Rape Comfort Packs – they provide many
basic hygiene products, a teddy bear, sugar, and a personalized card assuring them the
attack is not their fault – offer a moment of dignity to the wounded soul in what possibly
could be the worst moment of their lives.
My Miss World London adventure
I have never been abroad before, so every fibre of my being was alive as I arrived
in London.
Firstly, it was bitterly cold – which I was expecting, but surprised by how damp their cold
is! Seeing Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Picadilly Circus, red buses, the black taxi – sights
I’ve only seen in the movies, and in news clips from that wonderful city – was surreal.
And being part of the Miss World pageant, one of the many young women representing
countries from around the globe, was both humbling and exhilarating.
I stand in the hallowed shoes of past Miss South Africa winners who have gone on to
wear the Miss World Crown.
And when I come home, and all of this is over, I hope to continue to find a direction
and purpose in my life that will enable me to continue to help those who, like me, are
dealing with the aftermath of sexual abuse.
True to herself
When asked about being on a platform of this magnitude, Sasha-Lee said that
despite being a model, she will never get used to the limelight.
One of the challenges was the public not understanding her values as a
plus-size model.
“The toughest moment for me was the final question. I could have given a generic
answer at that moment, but what was true to me was saying that I had survived sexual
abuse growing up and today, together, we are going to take our power back.”
Aside from the good experiences and friends she made, a highlight for Sash-Lee was the
feedback she received on social media following her message.
“People reached out to me and said thank you for what I stand for and the message I
was delivering.”
Star-struck
STRONGER | FITTER | FASTER
Does the name Kai Luke Brümmer ring a bell? Let us
inform you, he recently played the role of Nicholas van
der Swart in the film, Moffie. We caught up with this
young, talented actor who is taking the industry
by storm.
Having only played in a couple of productions, Kai Luke Brümmer is already paving his
way to success. He was exposed to drama and acting at a young age by his mother, a
drama teacher. “I started to perform in her theatre, Seeds, from a very young age. The
theatre used to be an old helicopter hanger that was converted into a community
theatre space.
Originally from Henley-On-Klip, Kai and his family moved to Melville when he was 14
and he thereafter matriculated from St John’s College. I took drama as a matric subject
and after a gap year I enrolled for a course in Theatre and Performance at the University
of Cape Town. In 2016 he performed in numerous stage productions, including Mike
van Graan’s When Swallows Cry and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,
for which he won a Naledi Award for best actor. Moffie was his first major film role.
He was considered for many roles in Moffie before he was chosen to play the lead,
Nicholas van der Swart. The defining moment for the team was when the producer, Eric
Abraham, and director, Oliver Hermanus, attended his leading role performance in The
Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Kai’s commanding stage performance
sealed the deal and team Moffie soon became quite obsessed with him as the lead.
He worked tirelessly to prepare for the role of Nicholas, adopting a vigorous exercise
and weight loss programme and had to devour a very long list of films before
shooting began.
“Moffie has exposed me to the international film industry in the most incredible way.
I’ve decided to move to London in the near future to pursue my acting career, but
South Africa will always be my home. We as South Africans have something unique that
you can’t find anywhere else in the world, and this translates into the stories that we
have to tell.
The best part of this industry is the amazing people that one gets to work with. I was
so excited to work with Oliver Hermanus, and during the filming of Moffie I grew as
a performer. Shortly after wrapping up on Moffie I shot a new American action series
called The Professionals, in which I play Tom Welling’s younger brother, which
was great fun.
Kai currently lives in Cape Town. He has a very close bond with his family. “We love to
surf and generally spend time in or on the ocean or joking with each other. I also love
watching films, especially on Mondays when no one else is in the cinema.
What is on your bucket list?
My bucket list is pretty long, but at the moment I’m most interested in producing/
The biggest life lesson I’ve learned is that you never stop learning.
BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN
BOXING AND FITNESS TO
UNLOCK YOUR STRONGEST
BODY AND MIND.
1-ON-1 MEANS THAT,
WE CATER FOR ALL LEVELS
OF FITNESS
Beginner | Intermediate | Experienced
STILL NOT CONVINCED?
TOTAL BODY | MUSCLE UP
Muscle Mass vs. Definition
Unlike your bench press, BOXING is functional.
“It’s great for total body strength and power as it
uses the body from head to foot.”
That means you’ll build that all-over muscle that
makes boxers’ physiques so enviable.
BURN FAT | GET SHREDDED
BURN 500 - 1000 CALORIES A SESSION
BOXING builds that dream physique fast! More
cuts and more curves where you want them! “It’s
high-intensity training,” This spikes your
metabolism for huge calorie burn while you’re
training, then increased burn even when you’re
out of the gym.
You’ll knock out body fat even while you’re
asleep.
CONFIDENCE | FOCUS
Boxing isn’t about punching It’s fully absorbing.
When BOXING you are hyper-focused. The mind
won’t go wandering too often.” It’s also perfect
stress relief; you can’t hit your boss, but you can
take out your full in-tray frustration on a
punching bag.
You’ll be faster and more nimble everywhere,
from the football pitch to the squat rack
Like it or not, social media and the “selfie” era are here to stay. Aesthetic doctor,
Anjana Bhana, sheds some light on the topic. Did you know?
ccording to a survey
released by the American
Academy of Facial Plastic
and Reconstructive
Surgery (AAFPRS),
social media’s impact
on aesthetics has
been enormous,
especially in how people perceive and
project themselves. The survey results
showed that in 2017, 55 per cent
of facial plastic surgeons consulted
patients that wanted to look better in
selfies. This is a 13 per cent increase
from 2016.
A phenomenon has arisen from
this increased use of social media –
snapchat dysmorphia as well as the
compare and despair culture and
chasing the glow. What is often reality
What we should
aim for is longlasting
sustainable
results rather than
stressful trends
is very different from what is constructed
and curated on Instagram. Many people
will use various apps to achieve a look
that they will present to me as their
desired after result but some of these
filters and facetunes may require major
surgery or many progressive treatments
with filler. People are much more critical
of themselves because they spend
so much time looking at their selfies.
Hashtags along with this trend include
#FillersnotFilters and the newly-accepted
Instagram Face. It’s almost as if a new
normal is emerging of overly inflated lips
and oddly elevated brows.
Are you selfie ready?
Many aesthetic practices also participate on social media platforms, such as
Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, to promote and market their services. And we to
feel the pressure to perform and compare to our peers as well. To get people “selfie
ready” – and for consumers feeling the pressure to have filter face daily. We want
more and more – more dramatic results without realising what goes behind these
snapshot results – months of holistically being healthy in combination with a variety
of treatments.
Social media and celebrities can also drive trends – the defined jawline of Jennifer
Lopez and Angelina Jolie or the highly filtered smooth skin look leading to increase in
treatments such as Jawline Filler, Threads and Skinboosters. What we should aim for is
long-lasting sustainable results rather than stressful trends. Ask yourself what is your
motivation for seeking treatment?
For even the “prettiest” and most handsome people, few things can be as humbling
as the front facing phone selfie. There’s the ‘you’ that you see in the washroom mirror
(very different from the ‘you’ you see when you sit in your hairdressers chair), and the
‘you’ you see in a selfie. Regular selfie taking has little to do with narcissim and more
to do with documenting, approval and feeling a sense of belonging but regular selfie
viewing has been linked to lower self-esteem and decreased life satisfaction.
Try it yourself
Take a selfie with no selfie stick and then have someone take a photo of your face
from some distance away. The wide lens of the camera phone can make you nose
look enormous and your chin tripicate. I have been sent some odd, very early
morning selfies of patients that are disturbed by what they see in the picture because
of distorted perception. I never advise on selfies – a face to face consultation is
important . Also cameras do not work the same way as our brain does (making the
automatic adjustment when some zooms in close to your face – say for a kiss- without
looking distorted).
Enhance your natural beauty
It’s important to realise it’s no longer about treating a line or just a lip with 1ml of
filler – it’s about enhancing your faces natural beauty and positive attributes with
a process. Bespoke transformative treatments with a holistic approach that treats
structurally aging as well surface aging. Individualised treatments that move away
from syringes but rather results (a younger pre-rejuvenation patient vs a first time
older patient that has greater and different requirements). Different ethnic groups
have different needs, anatomical variations and desires.
Quite simply our skull is shrinking and we lose our structural support as well
as changes in the muscles, fat pads, tendons and skin changes . The bone sets
the tone and form follows function – your underlying bone structure has a huge
influence on the shape of your face and the way you age.
It’s now about wanting to be cute, less angry, less sad, less tired, not saggy –
looking more trustworthy , more approachable, serene and healthy – achievable
with injectables and other treatments. Does the result suit your personality? Small
tweaks such as lifting the brow, reversing a sulky mouth corner, opening the eye,
reduce the under eye hollowness. About boosting your confidence and having
treatments that yield natural ,safe and proportional results. You can ask – what
does your face say about you?
Maybe this year it is time for a different approach to fitness and weight loss if you have
been unsuccessful in the past. We visit Lesley Flavell at her boxing studio in Bassonia.
About Icon Boxing World
While working in the financial services industry, Lesley Flavell started and headed
up the first women only fitness training facility in the country, called Shapes for
Women. She sold this business after two years.
In 2011 she and well-known public personality, Nick Durandt joined forces to
open one of the first upmarket, executive one on one training facilities in Sandton
now called Urban Warrior Boxing Gym. What started as a community upliftment
project that provided a means of earning a living for professional fighters
between bouts, soon became one of the most well respected and well known
facilities in the country, often hosting overseas champion training camps whilst
preparing for bouts in South Africa.
Icon Boxing World powered by Urban Warrior will also no doubt become one of
the countries well-known executive boxing training facilities with Urban Warrior
having won some of the most prestigious accolades in the country.
Looking for a good workout?
We’ve all overindulged during the festive season. Boxing offers the ultimate workout
and provides mental, emotional and physical benefits. It will furthermore help you feel
strong and confident leading you to a healthier and happy life. Best part? While you’re
punching a bag the workout will improve your physical strength and will help tone
your body. Boxing is ideal for anyone looking for an alternative approach to health and
fitness.
“At Icon Boxing World we don’t follow, we lead! We constantly hone our skills and
change your workout so your body never reaches a plateaux. You see results! Real
results! No sales talk, no false promises. We offer 60 minute, one-on-one personal
training sessions with a professional boxer as well as group classes! Some of the trainers
are past or current, SA or world champions. Others have been boxing for more than half
their lives. They love what they do, and are ready to change your life, said Lesley”.
Why should women
consider boxing?
1) It torches calories and burns
fat fast
2) It improves your mood and
decreases stress levels
3) It will make you strong and give
your confidence a boost
4) It is great for self-defense
5) It will increase your core
stability, build and develop
muscles and tone your body
Lesley’s health tips for 2020
Live your best life by
implementing these health tips
into your daily routine.
Bliss in a bottle!
If you’re looking for an
exceptional pinotage
this summer season,
we’ve found a couple
of great options …
including the just released
Diemersfontein The Prodigy,
the third in this estate’s
‘coffee-chocolate’ Pinotage
range. Lighter than the
original, The Prodigy
perfectly ticks the box for
everyday enjoyment … it’s
brilliant with South African
staples like Bobotie, Bunny
Chow and Braai – which all
beg for a glass of Pinotage,
while its versatility makes it
a great partner with roast
duck, lamb casseroles and
even Chocolate soufflé.
Serve it slightly chilled. R75.
The much-loved coffee
and chocolate notes of the
Original Diemersfontein
Pinotage make it a wine
although a great partner
to rich lamb casseroles and
gentle Malay curries, the
best companion for this
wine is a rich, decadent
chocolate dessert. Try it
Blossoms and blooms
Some fresh inspiration for the summer season.
Indoor plant of the month…with
its heart-shaped flowers and its long-lasting ability
to survive, Anthuriums are the plant for Valentine’s
month. Love might be fickle, but these plants are
not. They are not needy, prefer under watering
to over watering, are happy in medium to high
light, and flower off and on throughout the year. A
drench of liquid fertiliser once every two or three
months will keep them perky. There are lots of
new colours and oh-so-cute dwarf varieties. These
plants are stayers.
We’re planting… flowers that attract birds for their nectar or seeds. Sunbirds love
indigenous wild dagga (Leonotis Leonurus), aloes, strelitzia, Cape honeysuckle,
proteas, red hot pokers and watsonia. The tinier sunbirds will also seek out
indigenous and garden salvia, like Black and Bloom or Big Blue, for their nectar.
What’s great is that all these are water-wise and heat tolerant perennials that
grow in full sun to semi-shade in ordinary garden soil. There are plenty of seed
loving birds too and if you let annuals like marigolds, cosmos, sunflowers, poppies
and zinnias go to seed, you will be providing a natural supply of food instead
of building a dependence on bird feeders. Don’t forget about perennials like
gaillardia and coreopsis as well as indigenous grasses, various Eragrostis types
and Anthericum saundersiae that produces lovely heads of flowers and seeds.
Some tips:
· Choose flowers that grow best in your local area.
· Prepare soil well before planting; adding in plenty of compost, and fertiliser.
· Plant a variety, that are different heights when mature and flower at different
times to provide a constant source of nectar or seed.
· Don’t dead head and allow plants to go to seed. What the birds miss will pop up
as new plants.
· Don’t use insecticides. Birds also feed on insects that are attracted to the flower.
· Include grasses with abundant seed heads. They are attractive as accents when
interspersed among the flowers.
Try this app
You don’t need to wonder anymore because
Candide, the community gardening
app that is free to download, is going to
tell you, at the click of a pic. A brand new
feature on this handy info-guru is ‘Plant ID’.
To help you identify an unknown plant,
shrub, herb or tree all you have to do is
go to the ‘Knowledge’ section on Candide,
snap a shot of the mystery plant, or
upload one from your phone, then press
the identify tab. You will then get not only
the name and short summary or overview
of the plant and species, but details of its
origins, environmental preferences, propagation,
personality, problems, geography,
uses and much, much more.
Especially noteworthy about Candide is
that it is designed for all levels of gardener,
from beginner to well-established
so information is both practical and
invaluable as well as easy- to-understand.
And because it’s used by a whole
community of gardeners with different
backgrounds and experience, elsewhere
on the app, you can also learn and
benefit from everyone else’s questions
and answers.
Candide is free for download in the
Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
Once the app has been downloaded,
users are able to utilise it worldwide. To
find the app, simply type ‘Candide’ into
the search bar.
FEBRUARY GARDEN TASKS
· Water and mow lawns
weekly. If it is very hot
don’t cut the lawn too
low. The longer leaves will
shade the roots, so that it
draws up less water.
· Remove dead flowers; this
will extend the flowering
period of your summer
annuals and perennials.
· Pull out summer annuals,
like petunias, that are
over and put in some
quick flowering annuals
like Vinca, Marigolds and
Angelonia.
· Lightly trim lavender,
pelargoniums, and
other bushy plants that
need tidying up, as
well as topiaries and
hedges. Take cuttings of
pelargoniums, hydrangeas,
osteospermum, fuchsias,
salvia, and heliotrope.
· There is still time to divide
agapanthus and irises.
· Water camellias and
azaleas regularly as they
are getting buds for spring.
· Water containers daily and
feed with a liquid fertiliser
at half strength every
second week.
Vineyards. Romance. History. All you
Room with a view
With a view over the vineyards and mountains, it’s hard to leave the bedroom
of your d’Olyfboom Family Estate Guest House!
Let’s be honest. There’s more to a guest house than a bedroom. But lying in an
oversized, comfy bed, with a view out over the vines, mountains and pretty Paarl
countryside, is hard to beat. And trust us, it’s fairly hard to tear yourself away when
you’re staying in one of the five guest suites at d’Olyfboom Family Estate. But tear
yourself away you must ... as there’s so much more to explore and enjoy.
This historic estate in the Western Cape sits jolly prettily against the Paarl Mountain,
looking out over the town, vineyards and countryside and is close to all the town
has to offer ... art galleries and antique shops, museums and restaurants.
A highlight at d’Olyfboom, which is all old-school charm and romance, is the Rahzu
experience ... weather permitting, you can have private or group lessons in the
lush gardens ... calm, tranquil and soothing, it’s a sublime treat.
The intimate guest house dishes up healthy Boland breakfasts, and is massively
popular as a wedding venue. A perfectly romantic spot in the winelands ... well
worth considering if you’re heading to the Cape this year.
Rates are from around R835 a person, sharing, but check the website as there
are seasonal changes and specials. The guest house is part of the Cape Country
Routes (CCR) South Africa collection ... a group of around 20 owner-operated and
managed hotels, lodges and guest houses on the scenic and historic routes in the
Western and Eastern Cape. Details: capecountryroutes.com
