SPAR Grand 

Prix Awards 

The 13th SPAR Grand Prix Awards were hosted at Emperors 

Palace recently. This annual ceremony celebrates the top 

female road-running athletes in South Africa and the 

continent. The winner of the 2019 SPAR Grand Prix, Helalia 

Johannes, was presented with her trophy and winner’s cheque 

for R185 000. The other top nine finishers in the open category 

as well as the various age group category winners were also 

honoured at the ceremony. A cheque for R50 000 was handed 

over to Goldilocks and the Bear Foundation as Sonja Laxton’s 

charity celebrating her 100th SPAR Challenge race.

Beauty with a purpose 

Sasha-Lee Olivier, Miss South Africa 2019, is by her own account a born and bred 

Albertonian. We catch up with her after her journey to Miss World in London. 

She was born in Eden Park, 

moved with her family to 

Palm Ridge and finally 

spent time growing up in 

Brackendowns. 

Sasha-lee attended 

Glenview Primary and 

went to Bracken High. 

According to Sasha-Lee, 

when she was younger she 

aspired to compete in the Miss 

South Africa competition, but her reasons 

for doing so changed over the years. 

“When I was young, what I saw was a kind 

princess and thought I wanted to be her,” 

said Sasha-Lee. 

“As you grow up you realise the 

responsibility that comes with it and then 

you try to align what you stand for with 

that responsibility. I think you decide to do 

it not for yourself, but for those people you 

stand for,” she said. 

As a child she preferred playing outside or 

playing video games over make-up and 

dressing up. 

Sasha-Lee eventually joined the Miss South 

Africa competition because she wanted to 

set an example for young girls. “I wanted 

to show them that it is okay to be a size 36,” 

said Sasha-Lee. “I think it is so important 

to show them that there is strength in 

overcoming things in your life.” 

Sasha-Lee described the journey of Miss 

South Africa as an experience of a lifetime. 

“When I first got the call that I was a 

finalist I thought it must be a prank. I can’t 

describe the feeling when I realised it was 

actually happening. It’s the one where you 

realise that every decision you made, every 

failure, every good thing that happened, 

it has all taken its place and you are where 

you want to be.” 

Sasha-Lee said she took special care to 

fully experience and live in each moment 

during the journey. “We are so futureoriented 

and I wanted to take it one day at 

a time. There were highs and lows and we 

were being tested. It was my first chance to 

have a platform where I could open up and 

share what I stand for.” 

She recently had the privilege of 

representing South Africa at Miss World 


Pageant in London. “It’s been a thrilling journey, being offered the chance to travel abroad 

– a first for me – and take part in the world’s most prestigious competition. 

For me, the most important part of all of this has been the Miss World Beauty with a 

Purpose campaign that every entrant is expected to have. 

I was sexually abused. I believed that I was somehow complicit in the abuse that was 

being done to me, and suffered greatly from a deep sense of shame as a result. 

It is why I have chosen to support, inspire and help girls, boys, women and men who have 

had a similar experience to me as part of my Miss World ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ campaign. 

I have used #ItsNotYourFault as my slogan so that those who have suffered sexual assault 

can know that they are not to blame for the violence that is perpetrated against them. 

I am so grateful to be able to use the very public platform that Miss World provides to 

bring solace to women (and men) who are survivors of sexual assault. Beauty with a 

Purpose is a separate category of the Miss World competition and the winner of this 

segment will have her campaign supported by the organisation for the year of her reign. 

Going forward, I do not want this to be merely a one-year thing. I want to continue this 

journey as I walk through life. As part of my campaign, I am reaching out to people who 

are reporting a sexual attack at police stations, when they are at their most vulnerable. 

I am determined to assist women and men on an emotional level because I know the 

trauma they are going through. 

I have joined forces with Penny Stein and the Angel Network. They will help me locate 

sexual abuse survivors, and distribute Rape Comfort Packs to them. This is a crucial part 

of my #ItsNotYourFault campaign. I hope these Rape Comfort Packs – they provide many 

basic hygiene products, a teddy bear, sugar, and a personalized card assuring them the 

attack is not their fault – offer a moment of dignity to the wounded soul in what possibly 

could be the worst moment of their lives. 

My Miss World London adventure 

I have never been abroad before, so every fibre of my being was alive as I arrived 

in London. 

Firstly, it was bitterly cold – which I was expecting, but surprised by how damp their cold 

is! Seeing Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Picadilly Circus, red buses, the black taxi – sights 

I’ve only seen in the movies, and in news clips from that wonderful city – was surreal. 

And being part of the Miss World pageant, one of the many young women representing 

countries from around the globe, was both humbling and exhilarating. 

I stand in the hallowed shoes of past Miss South Africa winners who have gone on to 

wear the Miss World Crown. 

And when I come home, and all of this is over, I hope to continue to find a direction 

and purpose in my life that will enable me to continue to help those who, like me, are 

dealing with the aftermath of sexual abuse. 

True to herself 

When asked about being on a platform of this magnitude, Sasha-Lee said that 

despite being a model, she will never get used to the limelight. 

One of the challenges was the public not understanding her values as a 

plus-size model. 

“The toughest moment for me was the final question. I could have given a generic 

answer at that moment, but what was true to me was saying that I had survived sexual 

abuse growing up and today, together, we are going to take our power back.” 

Aside from the good experiences and friends she made, a highlight for Sash-Lee was the 

feedback she received on social media following her message. 

“People reached out to me and said thank you for what I stand for and the message I 

was delivering.”

Star-struck

Does the name Kai Luke Brümmer ring a bell? Let us 

inform you, he recently played the role of Nicholas van 

der Swart in the film, Moffie. We caught up with this 

young, talented actor who is taking the industry 

by storm. 

Having only played in a couple of productions, Kai Luke Brümmer is already paving his 

way to success. He was exposed to drama and acting at a young age by his mother, a 

drama teacher. “I started to perform in her theatre, Seeds, from a very young age. The 

theatre used to be an old helicopter hanger that was converted into a community 

theatre space. 

Originally from Henley-On-Klip, Kai and his family moved to Melville when he was 14 

and he thereafter matriculated from St John’s College. I took drama as a matric subject 

and after a gap year I enrolled for a course in Theatre and Performance at the University 

of Cape Town. In 2016 he performed in numerous stage productions, including Mike 

van Graan’s When Swallows Cry and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, 

for which he won a Naledi Award for best actor. Moffie was his first major film role. 

He was considered for many roles in Moffie before he was chosen to play the lead, 

Nicholas van der Swart. The defining moment for the team was when the producer, Eric 

Abraham, and director, Oliver Hermanus, attended his leading role performance in The 

Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Kai’s commanding stage performance 

sealed the deal and team Moffie soon became quite obsessed with him as the lead. 

He worked tirelessly to prepare for the role of Nicholas, adopting a vigorous exercise 

and weight loss programme and had to devour a very long list of films before 

shooting began. 

“Moffie has exposed me to the international film industry in the most incredible way. 

I’ve decided to move to London in the near future to pursue my acting career, but 

South Africa will always be my home. We as South Africans have something unique that 

you can’t find anywhere else in the world, and this translates into the stories that we 

have to tell. 

The best part of this industry is the amazing people that one gets to work with. I was 

so excited to work with Oliver Hermanus, and during the filming of Moffie I grew as 

a performer. Shortly after wrapping up on Moffie I shot a new American action series 

called The Professionals, in which I play Tom Welling’s younger brother, which 

was great fun. 

Kai currently lives in Cape Town. He has a very close bond with his family. “We love to 

surf and generally spend time in or on the ocean or joking with each other. I also love 

watching films, especially on Mondays when no one else is in the cinema. 

What is on your bucket list? 

My bucket list is pretty long, but at the moment I’m most interested in producing/ 

directing my own feature films. 

What is your biggest fear? 

My biggest fear is not getting the last biscuit in the cookie jar (just joking!). I have lots of 

fears, but I try to not let them stop me from trying something new and challenging. 

What is the biggest life lesson you have learned? 

The biggest life lesson I’ve learned is that you never stop learning. 

What would we find on your Instagram account? 

My Instagram page generally focuses on my career, films I’m watching, books I’m 

reading and places I’m travelling to.

Like it or not, social media and the “selfie” era are here to stay. Aesthetic doctor, 

Anjana Bhana, sheds some light on the topic. Did you know? 

ccording to a survey 

released by the American 

Academy of Facial Plastic 

and Reconstructive 

Surgery (AAFPRS), 

social media’s impact 

on aesthetics has 

been enormous, 

especially in how people perceive and 

project themselves. The survey results 

showed that in 2017, 55 per cent 

of facial plastic surgeons consulted 

patients that wanted to look better in 

selfies. This is a 13 per cent increase 

from 2016. 

A phenomenon has arisen from 

this increased use of social media – 

snapchat dysmorphia as well as the 

compare and despair culture and 

chasing the glow. What is often reality

is very different from what is constructed 

and curated on Instagram. Many people 

will use various apps to achieve a look 

that they will present to me as their 

desired after result but some of these 

filters and facetunes may require major 

surgery or many progressive treatments 

with filler. People are much more critical 

of themselves because they spend 

so much time looking at their selfies. 

Hashtags along with this trend include 

#FillersnotFilters and the newly-accepted 

Instagram Face. It’s almost as if a new 

normal is emerging of overly inflated lips 

and oddly elevated brows. 

Are you selfie ready? 

Many aesthetic practices also participate on social media platforms, such as 

Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat, to promote and market their services. And we to 

feel the pressure to perform and compare to our peers as well. To get people “selfie 

ready” – and for consumers feeling the pressure to have filter face daily. We want 

more and more – more dramatic results without realising what goes behind these 

snapshot results – months of holistically being healthy in combination with a variety 

of treatments. 

Social media and celebrities can also drive trends – the defined jawline of Jennifer 

Lopez and Angelina Jolie or the highly filtered smooth skin look leading to increase in 

treatments such as Jawline Filler, Threads and Skinboosters. What we should aim for is 

long-lasting sustainable results rather than stressful trends. Ask yourself what is your 

motivation for seeking treatment? 

For even the “prettiest” and most handsome people, few things can be as humbling 

as the front facing phone selfie. There’s the ‘you’ that you see in the washroom mirror 

(very different from the ‘you’ you see when you sit in your hairdressers chair), and the 

‘you’ you see in a selfie. Regular selfie taking has little to do with narcissim and more 

to do with documenting, approval and feeling a sense of belonging but regular selfie 

viewing has been linked to lower self-esteem and decreased life satisfaction. 

Try it yourself 

Take a selfie with no selfie stick and then have someone take a photo of your face

of distorted perception. I never advise on selfies – a face to face consultation is 

important . Also cameras do not work the same way as our brain does (making the 

automatic adjustment when some zooms in close to your face – say for a kiss- without 

looking distorted).

Oh’ chocolate 

Try this simple chocolate brownie recipe from Café la Vie in Brackenhurst. 

Chocolate Brownie recipe 

Ingredients: 

• ½ cup of butter • 1 cup white sugar • 2 eggs • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract 

• 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder • ½ cup all-purpose flour • ¼ teaspoon 

salt • ¼ teaspoon baking powder Frosting • 3 tablespoons butter, softened 

• 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder • 1 tablespoon of honey 

• 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar 


Method: 

Preheat oven to 180 °C. Grease and 

flour an 8 inch square pan. 

In a large saucepan, melt ½ cup 

butter. Remove from heat, and stir in 

sugar, eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla. 

Beat in 1/3 cup cocoa, ½ cup flour, 

salt and baking powder. Spread 

batter into prepared pan. 

Bake in preheated oven for 25 to 30 

minutes. Do not overcook. 

To make frosting: Combine 

3 tablespoons softened butter, 

3 tablespoons cocoa, 1 tablespoon 

of honey, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 

and 1 cup confectioners’ sugar. Stir 

until smooth. Frost brownies while 

they are still warm.

Blossoms and blooms 

Some fresh inspiration for the summer season. 

Indoor plant of the month…with 

its heart-shaped flowers and its long-lasting ability 

to survive, Anthuriums are the plant for Valentine’s 

month. Love might be fickle, but these plants are 

not. They are not needy, prefer under watering 

to over watering, are happy in medium to high 

light, and flower off and on throughout the year. A 

drench of liquid fertiliser once every two or three 

months will keep them perky. There are lots of 

new colours and oh-so-cute dwarf varieties. These 

plants are stayers.

We’re planting… flowers that attract birds for their nectar or seeds. Sunbirds love 

indigenous wild dagga (Leonotis Leonurus), aloes, strelitzia, Cape honeysuckle, 

proteas, red hot pokers and watsonia. The tinier sunbirds will also seek out 

indigenous and garden salvia, like Black and Bloom or Big Blue, for their nectar. 

What’s great is that all these are water-wise and heat tolerant perennials that 

grow in full sun to semi-shade in ordinary garden soil. There are plenty of seed 

loving birds too and if you let annuals like marigolds, cosmos, sunflowers, poppies 

and zinnias go to seed, you will be providing a natural supply of food instead 

of building a dependence on bird feeders. Don’t forget about perennials like 

gaillardia and coreopsis as well as indigenous grasses, various Eragrostis types 

and Anthericum saundersiae that produces lovely heads of flowers and seeds. 

Some tips: 

· Choose flowers that grow best in your local area. 

· Prepare soil well before planting; adding in plenty of compost, and fertiliser. 

· Plant a variety, that are different heights when mature and flower at different 

times to provide a constant source of nectar or seed. 

· Don’t dead head and allow plants to go to seed. What the birds miss will pop up 

as new plants. 

· Don’t use insecticides. Birds also feed on insects that are attracted to the flower. 

· Include grasses with abundant seed heads. They are attractive as accents when 

interspersed among the flowers.
