The first thing Vanessa Carvin does
when she arrives on the small island
off the coast of Ireland is change her
name. To the locals, she will be Willow
Hale. The second is to shave her head
... no longer shoulder length blonde,
it’s now cropped and grey, more
in keeping with a solitary outsider
escaping Dublin to live a hermetic
existence in a small cottage, and not a
notorious woman trying to get away
from the media after her husband
committed a crime - one they think
she is guilty of, too. Escaping her old
life might seem like a good idea but
the choices she has made throughout
her marriage have consequences.
Here, on the island, Vanessa must
reflect on what she did, and did
not, do. Only then can she discover
whether she is worthy of finding
peace at all. Water by John Boyne ...
a story of a woman coming to terms
with the demons of her past and
finding a new path forward. Penguin
It’s 2050. A climate-changed world,
where humans and digital devices
are closely entwined. It’s a world filled
with natural disasters, drought, famine
and floods. People are displaced as
new immigration laws are put into
effect, and the gap between the
haves and have nots widens. Future
Imperfect by Babette Gallard is
the story of a family determined to
be together ... despite the horrific
obstacles in their way ... exhaustion,
terror, the xenophobia of people
struggling to protect their increasingly
scarce resources. Thought-provoking,
this novel raises the question of what
may happen to our world in the nottoo-distant
future. LightEye

Hippos, a Mongoose and Me, sequel to the popular A Hippo Love
Story, is a collection of vivid stories reflecting the decades that
author Karen Paolillo has lived and worked in the wilds of southeast
Zimbabwe. The book kicks off with the rescue of two leopard cubs
from a water tank, with an anxious mum waiting in a fig tree nearby,
and continues with tales encompassing a wide variety of animals and
experiences … Karen’s extraordinary affinity with hippos, life with her
beloved mongoose, characterful baboons and rescued birds, close
encounters with lions and an injured buffalo, and her heart-stopping
flight from an enraged elephant. To add to the drama, Karen and her
husband Jean-Roger must face off against the drumbeat of political
subterfuge and poaching of wildlife, sometimes at great personal risk.
Such a great read … massively recommended. Penguin Books
Extraordinarily similar woodpeckers
in South America and Africa.
Quintessentially African trees native
across South America, from Ecuador
to Paraguay. How could this be? This
question nagged Nick Norman, an
exploration geologist by profession
and keen birder by hobby. He’d been
surprised to see a woodpecker in
Brazil, where he was working at the
time, which was strikingly similar to
those he knew in the land of his birth,
South Africa. In subsequent work
engagements in South America, he
saw other birds there, as well as trees,
which represented families he knew
well in Africa. That was the mystery
… how the same families of flora and
fauna had distributed themselves in
continents astride a major world ocean,
the South Atlantic. The obvious answer
– continental drift – turned out to be
a blind alley. Sherlock Holmes said
‘When you have eliminated all which
is impossible, then whatever remains,
however improbable, must be the
truth.’ In solving the mystery, the truth
of Holmes’s axiom became more and
more evident to Nick as he discovered
extraordinary travelogues of trees and
birds for which, given enough time, a
wide ocean was no barrier. This, Nick
Norman’s The Woodpecker Mystery –
The Inevitability of the Improbable, is
a story of astonishing epiphanies, full of
facts that will fascinate lovers of natural
history. The Franschhoek Press
Blooming
business
After more than two decades and countless celebrations, Dania de
Wit still does a jolly jive every time she gets to work her floral magic.
It all started with a plastic ice cream tub
doubling as a cash register on a steel table
under an umbrella.
As the town’s beloved flower girl, Dania spills
the petals on how her passion for flowers grew
from humble beginnings. Dania de Wit was
only 12 years old when her dad (aka superhero)
opened a retail nursery… later called Colour
Country Nursery.
“The nursery was opened on our farm in
Krugersdorp. So, I just remember the whole
fam constantly looking out the house windows
to see if we had a customer. It wasn’t long
before the nursery became successful and
soon enough got nicknamed the R1 Nursery
because that’s what my dad sold a lot of the
plants for.
“I was very involved with the nursery from
the get-go. As children, we were never
allowed to ‘do nothing’. So, on Sundays after
church, my dad used to host flower-arranging
competitions for the family. We had to use
flowers from the garden and my dad would be
the judge. He also got us planting all kinds of
seeds after dinners, and he always made it so
much fun for us.”
Needless to say, the seed was planted, and
Dania pretty much lived in the nursery during
her teen years. So, when the owner of the
nursery’s flower shop (which was separate
at the time) closed its doors within months
of opening, 19-year-old Dania, who had just
become a single mom, saw it as the perfect
opportunity to step up and take on the
challenge. And boy did she own it … winning
Sanlam’s Business Achiever of the Year award
barely five years in.
Since then, Dania’s flower shop has been her
main gig, pride and joy … but she’s also hustled
on the side. She’s been her dad’s rental agent,
lent a hand at his production farm and nursery,
and even started her own wedding décor
company, and guesthouse – which snagged
LekkeSlaap’s award for the Top Place to Stay in

Joburg back in 2016, by the way!
As a mom of two, Dania had a lot to juggle…
but what goes up, must come down, right?
In 2018 she had a mini-stroke. So, she scaled
down… sold the nursery and let go of the
guesthouse to focus on the flower shop. Then
came Covid.
“Although life stood still in other industries, it
went on in the flower business. I knew I had
to find a way to provide for my family. And so I
plucked flowers from my garden (and later even
the neighbour’s garden) to be able to make
flower arrangements for funerals. I just couldn’t
let my customers down.”
And, it’s exactly this kind of can-do attitude
that helped Colour Country Flora through its
most challenging times. But, unfortunately, life’s
garden wasn’t all roses from there. Even though
Dania’s flower shop managed to weather the
storm of the pandemic, her parents, sadly, didn’t
make it. It was hands down the toughest time
in her life. Luckily, anyone who knows Dania,
knows that when life knocks her down seven
times, she’ll get back up eight.
Today, she just loves pouring herself into her
new flower shop... going to flower markets,
maintaining personal relationships with
customers and making sure everything runs
smoothly. She also prides herself in knowing
her customers.
“Over the past 25 years, I have come to learn
exactly which flowers someone would like
based on the colour of their hair, their haircut
and the way they dress and speak.
“I always try to reflect someone’s personality and
style in their flower arrangements. I see flowers
as God’s art and he gave us so much to choose
from. And so each person can find a piece of
themselves in His creation.”
Behind the petals and stems, Dania is a selfconfessed
neat freak. When she’s not at the
shop, you’ll most probably find her at home,
rearranging her cupboards and decluttering as
much as she can. Because a clear space equals a
clear mind, right?
She also loves spending time with her children,
grandchild, family and friends. And, perhaps
even surprising them with a special culinary
delight here and there. In fact, her hidden
talents bloom like a well-tended garden
too… from baking cakes (but only for her
granddaughter, Lia) to offering sage advice to
those in need.
For Dania, success isn’t measured in wealth, but
in the happiness of her children, the warmth of
family, and the beauty of a life lived passionately.
‘‘I always try to reflect someone’s
personality and style in their flower
arrangements. I see flowers as God’s art
and he gave us so much to choose from.
And so each person can find a piece of
Seven things a flower wholesaler wants you to know
1Cut-flower prices change daily. They are bought by flower
agents (like me) at an electronic auction every morning. The
price depends on the availability of the specific flower and
demand thereof that specific day or week.
2About 400 flower agents across the country go to the
Multiflora flower auction which starts at 7am each morning.
We sit in an auditorium room with four electronic clocks in
front of us. Trolleys filled with flowers from around 600 growers
from all around the county are then pushed through the
auction room for us to see and (very quickly) bid on. All we have is a
small computer, a buy button and earphones. There’s no time to send
customers prices of flowers and everything is sold very quickly. So, if
you’ve missed something, you’ve missed it. Around one million stems
of cut flowers are sold daily on this flower auction.
3Flower prices are never the same. It all depends on whether
the flower is in season or not. If you get a price for a specific
flower from one supplier in January and another price from
a different supplier in June, the difference might vary greatly.
The best approach is to compare supplier prices within
the same week.
4This makes it very difficult for us to quote in advance. That’s
why florists will only be able to give you estimated prices in
advance, and the actual price on the day. One tip I’d give to
customers is to never give the same big order of a scarce
flower to more than one supplier. This will increase your price
as two flower agents will be bidding on your order.
5The cut flower that has the most unpredictable price and
on which we can never give you a guesstimate would be
6
the Gypsophila (Baby’s breath) which is very popular at the
moment. Some weeks it will be R45 and other weeks R200.
Brides just love their King Proteas, which are in season during
September. You will then find lots of King proteas everywhere
and they can cost you as little as R35 each. But if you buy the
same King protea in March it can cost you about R 200 a stem.
Most other proteas are in full season in April.
7Customers always want to put flowers in ice water. This is a myth.
Luke warm water is much better for your flowers and will make
them absorb water much easier than ice water. Always cut at
least 2cm to 5cm off the ends before you place your flowers in
water. Oh, and don’t forget to keep the water clean.
Choosing and caring for your pearls
Of all precious materials, few are as captivating and timeless as pearls are. In
the last couple of years, the beauty of pearls has reached new heights and
reignited creative expression at every major runway from New York to Paris.
With just a few styling tips, you can embrace pearls in the new season – and
for years to come.
Choosing your pearls Inspired by architecture, sculpture and feminine
design, Witchery has unveiled its most premium, elevated and timeless
jewellery collection yet. Weaving together traditional techniques and artistic
innovation, they have crafted a range of jewellery adorned with freshwater
pearls. From statement to staple, you can expect sculptural shapes and
unexpected forms for an elevated twist on the traditional.
Styling your pearls Opt for pieces that can adjust to any wardrobe palette and
occasion. Set with gold hues, the cool tones of pearl will highlight and
enhance the tone and texture of any outfit, making the jewellery as dazzling
as it is versatile. While pearls will work with virtually any tone, they are
especially striking when worn with neutrals like beige, white, and brown, or
with contrasting hues like black and navy. Introduce textures like linen and
cotton to match the natural materials for a look that is both interesting and
warm. Introduce textures like leather, knit, linen and cotton to match the
natural materials for a look that is both interesting and warm. To create a
sense of movement, opt for designs like Witchery’s Molten Lariat Necklace or
Molten Pearl Drop Earrings that work perfectly for any occasion day or night.
Treasuring your pearls Pearls are a timeless treasure and can last for a
lifetime with proper care. Never immerse your pearls in water or harsh
chemicals. Rather, wipe each pearl with a microfibre cloth before storage.
And always avoid spraying perfume on them.
Dare to dream…
Compiled by: ALANICKA LOTRIET.
Tucked away in the heart of Krugersdorp lies a
slice of serenity known as The Cork Tree restaurant.
And running the show is Simon Meintjes,
who’s taken life’s curveballs and turned them
into a delicious recipe for success.
All his life, Simon Meintjes battled with Primary Immunodeficiency Disease
(PID). This rare condition, a mix of genetic disorders affecting the immune
system, cast a shadow over his growing-up years. Think dealing with regular
skin infections, battling constant bouts of sickness, and making regular trips
to the hospital… a rollercoaster ride that eventually led to Simon being
homeschooled. These were but a few of the hurdles he faced. Amidst the
uncertainty, though, a resilient spirit began to take root.
“My dreams have always been more important than my disease. I learned from
a young age that if PID was going to be a constant throughout my life, I would
just have to find other ways to reach my goals. Needless to say, I’ve always been
pretty set on making my dreams come true. Or to try at the very least.”
And at 22, Simon defied the odds and opened The Cork Tree restaurant.
Sophisticated. Tranquil. And serene. Complete with a lush garden, perfect for
weddings and gatherings of all sorts.
Step inside, and you’ll most probably be greeted by Simon himself – bursting
with vibrancy, creativity and a genuine love for people. He’s not just the owner,
but the heart and soul of the Cork Tree! When he’s not busy running the show
– managing everything from the kitchen to special events – you’ll find this Jackof-all-trades
getting his hands dirty in the garden (and sneaking in barefoot
strolls whenever he can). He even made most of the napkins, seat cushions,
tablecloths, and runners himself too! Talk about hands-on!
It comes as no surprise that Simon’s absolutely passionate about cooking. As
the brains behind the menu, he wanted to give his customers something that
would keep them coming back. And boy, did he!
“My favourite part has to be the people. If the customers are happy, I’m over
the moon. I want them to experience good food and have good conversations
with their loved ones. It warms my heart to see people just relaxing and having
a good time.
“I want them to let go of their cares when they walk through these doors. I am
genuinely at my happiest when customers can feel that they can relax and let
their hair down.”
Yet, amidst the whirlwind of culinary pleasures and challenges, Simon still
grapples with the daily realities of living with PID. Managing stress and
maintaining a keen awareness of his body’s signals are essential to keeping the
condition in check.
For Simon, the disease serves as a constant reminder of life’s fragility, urging
him to seize each moment. In his world, obstacles are not barriers but stepping
stones to success. We chat with Simon for some more insight.
Your signature dish? The star of my
menu has to be the butter chicken
curry with homemade naan. If a
customer has had it once, they come
back for it again and again. Another
unexpected winner is the chicken
parmesan… with a twist. It’s unique
due to the fairly unknown ingredient –
pink peppercorns which just takes it to
the next level.
What else is on the menu? I just
love experimenting with different
flavours and combinations, which is
why I incorporated many different
cuisines into my menu. I included
South African, Indian, Italian and
American dishes among others. Think
bobotie phyllo rolls, curry meals and
cheeseburgers... all with somewhat of
a unique twist.
Biggest lesson learnt? The most
surprising lesson I learnt from running
my own business is that it takes longer
than you might think. To get your
client base and relationships built. I
truly didn’t realize that. It also takes a
while to create a name for yourself. But
hey, it’s all about the process, right?
Advice for other young
entrepreneurs? To approach other
entrepreneurs who have done the
work. Ask for their advice, guidance,
motivation and support. I, for one,
will do everything in my power to
help and motivate an upcoming
entrepreneur. No one really offered
this to me. So, I would like to offer it
to others. Also, they need to identify
what motivates them. And let
that encourage them and be their
driving factor.
How do you unwind? I love going
out, hanging out with friends and
socializing. I also enjoy movies,
music and reading. I’m also very
passionate about various fields of art.
Music. Acting. In fact, I’m hoping to
incorporate some theatre and music
events into the restaurant space
somewhere in the future. And, you
might just find me concocting some
homemade jams from time to time.

What words do you live by? It’s so
important to always be grateful. And
always keep a good perspective on
your circumstances. It’s all about
gratitude and perspective. If you can
keep those two qualities in good
balance, then you should be happy.
There is always someone who has
less than you, and there is always
something to be thankful for. If you
remember that, then everything
feels lighter. It’s hard sometimes…
I still don’t have everything I want,
but I have more than some. And I’m
grateful for that.
One goal you’re never giving up on?
My music and acting. I really want to
see what can become of it. Even if it
doesn’t work out, I just want to know
that I gave it my all. I’m also writing a
book. A memoir of what life has taught
me so far. About life in general, my
illness and all sorts of things.
Simon’s famous Butter Chicken Curry…
You’ll need: 1 large onion (diced); 3 Tbsp salted butter; 2 Tbsp butter
chicken curry spice; 800g chicken breast (cubed); 2 Tbsp tomato paste; 1
tin whole peeled tomatoes or tomato puree; 125ml fresh cream; handful
fresh coriander leaves (rinsed, de-stemmed and chopped); 500g diced
and roasted butternut; a pinch of cinnamon; salt and pepper.
To make: Sauté onion and spice mix in butter for about 4 minutes, stirring
constantly. Add the chicken together with the tomato paste and sauté
for a further 5 minutes. Add the butternut and cinnamon, and stir in
the rest of the tomato. Turn down the heat and simmer gently for 10-15
minutes. Remove from the heat, add the cream and mix well. Sprinkle
with coriander leaves, salt and pepper.
For the naan bread...
You’ll need: 1 1/2 cups flour; 1/4 cup milk; 1/4 cup plain yoghurt; 2 Tbsp
sunflower oil; 2 Tbsp water; 1 Tbsp garlic (finely chopped); 1 tsp baking
powder; 1 tsp yeast; a pinch of salt.
To make: Mix ingredients together. The dough should be bread-like, not
too soft, not too stiff. Let it stand to rise until it has doubled. Divide the
dough into 4 to 6 balls and leave to rise some more. Roll out the balls into
thin layers and fry on both sides in a medium-hot pan, until brown.
Beetroot-cured gravadlax with horseradish
sauce with Spier Frans K Smit white blend
Gravadlax is a decadent snack perfect for a
celebration. After you’ve cured them at home
overnight, these silky pink fish slices will last
for at least five days in the fridge, so you can
prepare in advance of your party. Serve with
crackers or seed loaf, creamy horseradish sauce
or even some baby gem lettuce. Serves six as a
light meal or starter. Prep and cooking time: 20
minutes plus overnight curing.
You’ll need: For the gravadlax ... 400-600g fresh
trout fillets, skin on; 2 small beetroots, peeled and
quartered; 1 cup muscavado sugar; 1 cup salt,
medium grain
For the creamy horseradish sauce ... 250ml sour
cream; 2 Tbsp hot horseradish sauce (or 1
Tbsp fresh grated horseradish); 5ml Dijon
mustard (optional)
To serve ... crackers of your choice or seed loaf;
baby gem lettuce (optional)
To make: Use a tweezer to pin-bone the fillets, if
they are not already pin-boned.
Place the beetroot in a food processor along
with the sugar and salt. Process to create a
coarse paste.
Place a sheet of cling-wrap on a clean surface,
then sprinkle 1/3 of the mixture onto it. Place half
of the fillets on the paste, skin side down. Top
with another 1/3 of the mixture and spread it out
to cover the surface of the fillets. Now place the
remaining half of the fillets on top of the covered
fillets, skin side up (so they are lying meat-side
together). Top with the final mixture, then with
another layer of plastic wrap. Wrap up tightly and
place inside a large-enough plastic container with
a lid. Refrigerate overnight or for 12 hours, turning
it over after 6 hours. The sugar/salt/beetroot
curing mix will create a sticky syrup, so be careful
not to mess it on your clothes.
When the curing time is up, open up the fillets
and rinse them under cold running water. Pat
dry. Use a sharp knife to cut thin slivers on an
angle from the tail side to the top, creating
as much surface area as you can. Arrange on
a platter and serve with the sauce and the
crackers/bread/leaves.
For the sauce, mix the sour cream, horseradish
and mustard together in a small bowl.
Serve with a glass of Spier Frans K Smit white
blend - a Bordeaux-style white blend of 80 per
cent Sauvignon Blanc and 20 per cent Sémillon,
with a citrus and lime palate more tropical than
herbaceous, and surprising hints of elder flower.
Luxurious
snacking
Extravagant doesn’t have to mean expensive.
It’s all about the lavish plating, the tastiest
ingredients, the generosity of servings.
Eggs. Avos. Trout. A trio of fancy platters
for your next celebration.
Avo bagels
Up your avo game. Switch the toast for a bagel
and ... voilà ... the posh version. Perfect for a breakfast
party. This makes four ... we serve with a glass of bubbles!
You’ll need: 2 bagels, cut in half horizontally; 2 avocados;
salt and pepper; plus ½ cup spreads, a small handful
herbs, a sprinkling spice and about 3 Tbsp extra toppings
- see suggestions below.
To make: Toast the bagel halves in a toaster.
Loadshedding tip ... toast them on a griddle or frying
pan on gas. Or alternatively skip the toasting and serve
fresh. Spread with your choice of spread.
Mash, slice, dice or cut the avocados into shapes with
cookie cutters and place on top. Season with salt and
pepper. Sprinkle over herbs, spices and toppings.
Try these combinations: Cream cheese or chunky cottage
cheese with dukkah, honey and sliced avo • Hummus,
feta, red peppercorns, avo stars and baby herbs •
Mashed avo, red onion, chilli flakes, lime and coriander
• Pesto, basil and diced avo
Greek salad platter with cheats poached eggs
Guests coming over for lunch or an early dinner. This
Mediterranean-style platter is affordable, quick to put
together, and perfect to nibble on while sipping a cocktail.
We’re also keen on the Mediterranean diet, so this works
well for us.
You’ll need: 4 eggs; salt and pepper; 2 handfuls cherry
tomatoes; 1 small red onion, thinly sliced into rings; half
a cucumber, cut into sticks; 100g packet Kalamata olives,
drained; 2 rings Feta, broken into pieces; Greek salad dressing.
To make: Make cheats poached eggs by pressing the middle of
a perforated plastic wrap square into a small ramekin or bowl,
leaving the rest of the plastic to hang over the outside edge.
Spray the centre with cooking spray and crack in an egg.
Bring the sides of the plastic overhang up and tie up tightly
with kitchen string, ensuring there are no air bubbles around
the egg. Take the plastic parcel out of the ramekin and
repeat with the rest of the eggs.
Bring a medium saucepan half full of water to a simmer on
medium heat. Carefully add all the egg parcels and cook for
4 minutes for runny yolks or until cooked to your liking.
Carefully cut the parcels open under the knots and unwrap.
Season with salt and pepper.
Arrange the tomatoes, onion, cucumber, olives and Feta on a
platter with the eggs. Serve with a Greek style dressing.
Spread the love
Bring romance into the garden with the spicy-sweet
fragrance of dwarf pot carnations.
The names say it
all. Pink Kisses. I love You.
And Purple Wedding. These pretty
and petite pot carnations, in romantic
shades of pink, blush and purple, come
from centuries of cultivation. The association
of carnations with love, fascination and
distinction goes back some 2000 years, when
they were named ‘the flower of the gods’ by Greek
philosopher Theophrastus. Like roses, many myths
and legends surround the carnation, reinforcing
its association with romance. They are woven
into wedding bouquets and celebratory
wreaths, are worn in buttonholes, and
are the official flower for Mother’s
Day. Pot carnations…what’s
not to like.
Text: ALICE COETZEE
26 Get It Magazine May 2024

Modern pot carnations are compact and bushy, producing
masses of bicoloured double flowers above grey-green stems
and leaves. They can be planted as a showy border, are
ideal for gravel gardens, and are hardy plants for patio
containers and hanging baskets. They are perfect gift
plants and can be grown indoors. Unlike the older, taller
carnation varieties that need staking and pinching,
pot carnations don’t have to be fussed over.
Pink Kisses produces long-lasting tiny,
bicolour flowers in sugar pink with
a darker pink centre and a delicious
fragrance. Plants grow up to 35cm high
and wide, and the pickable blooms
are long lasting.
I Love You is a living bouquet in shades of deep pink, soft
pink and rose through to white, as the flowers change
colour as they mature. Butterflies, bees and other
pollinators love this fragrant carnation. It’s a frost tolerant
carnation and works well both indoors and out.
Purple Wedding has single flowers in shades of pink and purple, with
a frilly white edging. The flowers cover this compact plant so that it
looks like a bouquet but lasts a lot longer. When grown indoors or on
the patio it needs plenty of bright light. As a garden plant it stands out
as an edging for a bed, in full sun to semi-shade.
Easy to grow
• Pot carnations need four to five hours of full sun.
Plant in well composted soil that drains well. • Space
plants 30cm apart and plant the crown of the plant
level with the surface of the soil. No need to mulch -
the stems like to be free of lingering moisture. • Once
established, plants are drought tolerant and should not
be over-watered. Let the soil dry out moderately before
watering. The roots tend to rot in soggy soil. • Fertilise
once a month and cut back after flowering for a repeat
flush of flowers. • Container grown plants do best with
morning sun and afternoon shade. Use a good quality
potting soil that drains well and feed with Margaret
Roberts Organic Supercharger after planting. Plants in
containers need more water than those in the garden.
Boost growth and flowers with a liquid fertiliser once a
month. Details: www.ballstraathof.co.za
Celebrate
in colour
Dare to be different. That’s the prompt from
wedding planners for brides who want
their big day to be timeless yet trendy.
Roses remain the wedding flower of choice, but unlike previous years, this year’s
brides (and wedding planners) are favouring bouquets, arrangements and
installations that pop with colour, yet are natural and organic.
According to wedding planners, bold and vibrant colours resonate with
couples who want a wedding that celebrates their story and their individuality.
Bright colours are energising and joyful, what better way to celebrate the most
memorable day of their lives, says rose grower Ludwig Taschner.
Bouquets that seem freshly gathered from the garden evoke a sense of simplicity
and spontaneity.
Unlike traditional rose bouquets that usually feature a single colour, the latest
trend offers space to play with different coloured roses. Combine them with
other much loved garden flowers like baby’s breath, daisies, grasses and other
foliage that also add texture. What could be more personal than incorporating a
bride’s favourite roses, or those that she grew up with in her parent’s garden?
The more colours the better, so feel free to break with convention when
composing your bouquet. The secret is to get the balance right with rose blooms
in complementary colours, offset with organic textures and hints of opulence.
The effect? Both trendy and timeless.
Try these garden roses
Duet is a tall growing hybrid tea with florist
quality blooms that have deep
pink outer petals contrasting with a softer
pink in the centre. This is an exceptional
garden performer.
Wedding décor goes organic
There’s a more natural, country feel to
wedding table décor. Florists are incorporating
rustic textures like wood, greenery and even fruit
and mushrooms into wedding table centrepieces,
although roses remain the centrepiece. A playful
arrangement, that uses unexpected shapes and textures
certainly adds to the sense of romance and magic that’s
present at every wedding. Roses are being used more
dramatically and unconventionally, whether it’s a beach
wedding, in a garden or at a wedding venue. It’s no longer
necessary for everything to be uniform. Composing
individual arrangements with similar colours but in
differing containers creates visual interest and energy.
Large floral arrangements act as focal points, as
well as being great photo backdrops for those
Instagram worthy moments with the happy
couple. Details: www.ludwigsroses.co.za
St Dunstan’s Centenary is a hybrid tea
rose that has full, old-fashioned blooms
carried on strong upright stems which last
well on the bush and in the vase.
Mauve Melodee forms clusters of large,
semi-double blooms that reveal yellow
stamens when fully open. A vigorous
hybrid tea rose growing to shoulder height.
The romance of rail
Seven reasons why a stay on the Kruger Shalati should be on your romantic bucket list!
The truly spectacular views from your
bedroom ... be it one of the two dozen
Carriage Suites on the Train on the Bridge
or the seven Bridge House Suites, sitting
adjacent to the bridge in a picturesque
garden setting with the train’s gentle glow as
your backdrop. All are opulent, with a hint of
the 1920’s rail safari. The views are equally
marvelous from the lounge and dining
areas and the swimming pools, which overlook the
Sabie River ... the river flows all year-round, drawing
animals and birds that come to quench their thirst.
The fact that you’ll be recreating
history. The Kruger Shalati - The Train on
the Bridge, sits on the exact spot where the
train would park overnight close to 100 years
ago, when visits to the Kruger National Park were
first allowed. The refurbished train is permanently
stationed on the historically rich Selati Bridge
above the Sabie River ... a unique experience
with luxury accommodation and activities
reminiscent of days gone by.
The option of a romantic turndown
... with rose petals scattered around
the room, a scented bubble bath
and a bottle of Moët champagne or
Steenburg Brut sparkling wine on ice.
