We need leaders

with vision

This is a year for federal election. The way

this government is handling the pandemic will

impact very much on the way people vote.

The arrival of Omicron in last November had

changed course of the government’s plan to ‘live

with the virus’. The sudden explosion of Covid

cases had failed the state and commonwealth

governments’ responses in testing, isolation and

ordered running of the society and businesses.

Despite a drop in the latest poll, fortunately

the government still holds fine as the supply of

vaccines for those aged 5-11 and booster shots

for adults are under good control, and given

Omicron’s mild symptoms, hence death rate is

still low and our hospital system can still cope.

Can Morrison demonstrate his leadership

amid this Covid crisis ahead of the election

and catch up to win as he did last round? The

opposition party supposedly is hard to win

support from the electorates unless the serving

government fails to keep their territory. So what

Morrison can put on the table this time?

I believe not many people over these two

pandemic years would still expect something very

positive coming out of the Australian economy

and living standard. I think they would rather

expect to see clear outlet and hope in the years

to come on recovering from the pandemic.

Everyone is tired of the pandemic. Omicron

could be a way out of it. On the assumption

that Omicron is unstoppable but it is not that

damaging on the fully vaccinated, so what

would happen if vast of the population would get

immunity ultimately?

It is time for our leader to tell us about his

vision of post-Covid time and to encourage

people to walk out of the pandemic with faith and

hope.

Only leaders who can offer hope can lead

Australia to move on.

In the coming federal election, hope the

leaders of both parties can show us the direction

and way ahead for Australians to choose.

Mazda CX-8

The Mazda CX-8 is a large crossover

SUV, available since 2017, and is a 7

seat version of the 5 seat CX-5, more of

a people mover for those who have the

need, and a little smaller than the CX-

9. The CX-8 has different options for

different countries, depending on what has

proved popular were, and Australia has the

choice of 2.5-litre petrol or 2.2 turbo-diesel

engines, both with 6-speed auto, the diesel

accompanied by front or all-wheel drive, but

the petrol version front-wheel drive. only.

The 2.5-litre petrol-engine CX-8 which

we drove is naturally aspirated, as opposed

to the 2.5-litre turbo petrol engine available

with the CX-9, so this makes its cost lower,

and also gives the benefit of not having to

think about dealing with a blown turbo, which

is not so common with modern turbo's, but

can happen. Engine output is lower than for

the turbo-petrol version, of course, at 140kW

v 170kW power, and 252Nm v 420Nm

torque, meaningless acceleration, and

towing capability, but for those concerned

mainly with getting up to 6 passengers

to and fro, 2.5-litre is adequate for most

requirements, with good if not exceptional

acceleration and overtaking abilities.

Handling and bump absorption is also well

done for a 1.8-tonne vehicle.

If you need it there is the more powerful

and economic turbo-diesel QX-8 option

with 6L/100km and 140kW of power and

450Nmof torque.

Looking at the CX-8 externally, it is very

attractively convoluted and curved from all

angles, as a crossover SUV should be, and

it looks good, but it is deceptively large when

seen from the inside and having all 5 rear

seats folded forward and front passenger

pushed and tilted forward gives a fairly large

cargo-carrying capability if called upon.

Getting back to design, Mazda has a lowkey

minimalist but interesting approach, and

to accompany the iconic, aggressive, oldracing-car-like

air-gulping nose, the front

and rear lighting enclosures fill that bill, with

subtle and more interesting shapes than

some other makers display.

Internally it is also minimalist and well lay

out, with silver highlights. The low, wide info/

media display does not intrude much into

the cockpit. The audio volume control on

the centre console is good, and the headsup

display with speed limits detected (called

Mazda Active Driving Display) works well

and is appreciated. The console lid is split

down the middle and hinged on the sides,

for more versatility.

The rear seats are progressively mounted

higher up, theatre style, for better viewing,

but further to that, the flagship Asaki LE

features a six-seater layout with luxury

captain's chairs for second-row occupants,

as in the CX-9, with a centre console like the

front one between the seats.

To give customers a wide degree of

choice as to how much extra equipment they

want and wish to stump up for, there is about

a $32k price difference between entry and

flagship models.

The CX-8 has 6 variants, ranging from the

basic Sport that we had, through Touring,

SAMEWAY ISSUE 651 P. 20 28.01.2022

Touring SP, GT, Asaki, and Asaki LE. The

first 3 variants have the choice of fwd. petrol

or awd diesel engine, the next 2 are frontwheel

drive or all-wheel drive diesel, and the

top-level Asaki LE is all-wheel drive diesel

only.

Equipment levels

As a base, the Sport variant supplies: -

17-inch alloy wheels with steel spacesaver

spare, LED headlamps auto on/off,

body-coloured heated and auto-folding

power mirrors, wipers 2-speed rain-sensing,

active drivers display, 3-zone climate with

independent rear control air-con, autodimming

rear-view mirror, rear-seat centre

armrest, black cloth seat-trim, leatherwrapped

gear shift and steering wheel, 8''

colour touch media/info display, AM/FM

tuner, Bluetooth, Digital radio, 6 speakers,

Apple and Android, Satnav. There is also

a large rotating metal knob on the centre

console that, along with some buttons, is

integral to navigating around and switching

to and fro on the media/infotainment/setup

display.

plus plentiful safety assistance including:-

Blind Spot Monitoring, High Beam

Control, Intelligent Speed Assist, Lane

Departure Warning, Lane-keep Assist,

Radar Cruise Control, engine Stop/Go, Rear

Park Sensors, Rear Cross Traffic Alert,

Reverse cam, Smart Brake and Smart City

Brake Support with night-time pedestrian

detect, Traffic Sign Recognition, Tyre

Pressure Monitoring, Electric park brake with

Auto Hold.

Then the next 5 levels progressively

add more features and appearance

enhancements.

For example:

Some of the 'Touring' additions include

- One-touch walk-in switch for third-row

quick access, gear paddle shifters, and front

parking sensors.

Some 'Touring SP' additions include – a

progression to 19'' alloy wheels, and black

outer mirror and front grill,

Some 'GT' additions include - adaptive

front-lighting system, power sliding, and

tilting sunroof, remote operated and handsfree

power tailgate, 10.25'' widescreen

display, wireless phone charging, premium

Bose 273-watt (10 speakers including

subwoofer) sound system.

Some 'Asaki' features include unique 19''

alloys and Gun metallic front grille, lower

front bumper, larger tailpipe, and adaptive

LED Headlamps, heated steering wheel,

7'' LCD drivers display binnacle, and 360°

View Monitor.

So the CX-8 with all of its variants,

together with those of the CX-5 and CX-9,

provide a wide variety of choices to what is

an appealing large-SUV core design. These

CX models are all, by the way, manufactured

in Aki, Hiroshima, Japan.
