Goodness will prevail
in all circumstances
The recent Covid outbreak in Hong Kong has
not just caused ballooning in case number but sadly
an upsurge in fatality especially for the elderly due to
their very low vaccination rate. Health care workers
have been working around the clock in looking
after the patients. Hong Kong has been following
China’s ‘dynamic zero’ strategy but short of boosting
vaccination like in Australia let alone making the
elderly as priority. The situation is very worrying, but
not to an extent that the health care workers give up
their determination in coping. My local friends here
are showing their grave concern on their connection
in Hong Kong by persuading them to be vaccinated.
Two weeks ago, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
has alarmed the world with those born after WWII
never seen a war in Europe. We believe national
conflicts could be sorted out by the UN, or through
negotiation between powers, without going into
wars in the mutual interest of the nations concerned.
In so many years we only got military conflict on
a localised basis, as it has been a general world
consensus that no country should openly conquer
another country. Russia’s invasion tells us that
human never learn from history on war, and peace
cannot be take for granted. We should keep hoping
that the crisis could be over soon.
On the eastern coast of Australia, flash storm
and river flooding hit extensive areas in Queensland
and NSW two weeks ago, causing massive damage
to property and resulting in human loss. This was
very dampening and distressing. Governments at
all levels handed out support aids and many local
voluntary bodies came into rescue, all leave their
covid flight and join hands to help out the affected
communities.
All these disaster and calamity remind us of
how fragile could be our state of living no matter
where, we can only face the uncertainty with faith,
hope and courage. Dark forces are around us,
but we can still live with goodness and love inside
ourselves.
In Ukraine’s war and Australia’s flooding, we
can find courageous acts such as the Ukrainian
president holding onto Kiev with his people, and
supplies rushing in for the flood victims here. We
know that in this world goodness still prevails.

Hyundai’s
all-electric
Ioniq
5
With the Ioniq Electric, Hyundai has
positioned itself as one of the pioneers
among mass-market carmakers, when it
comes to giving the market a taste of allelectric
vehicles. With its unconventional
styling and futuristic bits here and there, the
Hyundai Ioniq 5 Electric is positioned as
a niche vehicle by Hyundai. Battery packs
are rated at 72.6kWh, and you can get one
rear-mounted driving rear wheels, or rear
+ front mounted driving rear + front wheels
using a pair of electric motors. There is no
transmission or gearbox in the traditional
sense, as the electric motors coupled directly
to the wheels for what is essentially a singlegear
drivetrain.
We drove the four-wheel-drive version
which is rated at the 225-kWh total output, for
a 0 to 100kmh sprint time of just 5.2 seconds.
Top speeds are electronically limited to
185km/h. There is a predicted total rated
range of about 450km.
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric is available
in six colour options, namely Atlas White,
Galactic Grey, Phantom Black, Digital Teal-
Green, Lucid Blue, and Gravity Gold. All
are at no extra charge except matte colours
(Gravity Gold), which has a $1,000 surcharge.
The 2022 Hyundai all-electric Ioniq 5
prices range from $71,900 for the basic trim
level SUV Ioniq 5 2WD Extended Range EV
to $75,900 for the top of the range SUV Ioniq
5 AWD Extended Range EV.
Interior & Features
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric feels even more
technologically superior and futuristic from
the inside, with easily the most advanced
cabin ever seen in a Hyundai, as far as layout
is concerned.
The driver’s cockpit welcomes you with a
sporty-looking flat bottomed multi-functional
steering wheel as well as a 7-inch supervision
display screen behind it, which acts as an
instrument console.
The soft-touch theme for the dashboard
feels premium, whereas the free-mounted
touchscreen infotainment system at the
centre goes well with the current trend.
There is an inclined panel just below the
touchscreen system, which acts as a control
panel for the dual-zone automatic climate
control buttons.
The cabin gets a plethora of premium and
cool features, including a touch panel for the
climate control switches, electric sunroof,
button-operated transmission switches,
wireless charger, and a powered driver’s seat.
Cargo space is pretty good, with a decentsized
527-litre boot to 1587-litre with the
60/40-split rear seats folded down.
Exterior
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric attracts you
with its unconventional and unique styling,
which projects a superior design over
conventionally styled sedans. The overall
look of the Ioniq Electric is head-turning. I had
several people stopping me to say, “Such a
attractive design car!” The all-new Ioniq 5 is
undeniably distinct and modern.
At the front, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric has
a very large grille taking centre stage. Like
with all electric vehicles, the grille is finished
and covered, here completely in a greyish
theme. The all-LED headlamps positioned
to the sides of its upper edges get extending
portions of the grille below them. The
trapezoidal housing for the three slat design
of the daytime running LEDs is a nice touch
too.

Electric shows its unconventional design
only post the C-pillar, where the car has
an upraised stance for the boot release lid.
This is something that is there in many other
premium fastbacks and makes the Ioniq
Electric look heightened from the rear.
At the rear, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric has
a roofline that steeply inclines to the edge of
the boot lid, which is positioned quite higher.
The edge of the boot lid where the roofline
ends has an integrated boot spoiler, which
extends over the curve-styled LED tail lamps
as well.
Ride & Handling
While the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is pitched
as a five-seater, there is enough room for at
most four passengers with ease. The car is
armed with Macpherson struts at the front
and a torsion beam axle at the rear. Equipped
with disc brakes on all four wheels, the
Hyundai Ioniq Electric feels smooth, calm,
and comfortable over all types of roads.
Our test car, AWD version offers four drive
modes -' Eco', 'Normal', 'Sport', and 'Snow',
which each adjust the amount of torque
applied by each motor. It can also disconnect
the front motor when cruising to reduce drag
and maximise efficiency.
Engine & Fuel Consumption
The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq ditches the
fossil fuel-powered conventional engine, for
a fully electric 38.3 kWh lithium-ion polymer
battery as its power source. Our test car had
two motors, one in front and one at the rear.
The front produces maximum power output
of 70kW and 255Nm, while the rear makes
155kW and 350Nm. The engine welcomes
you with a sudden surge of torque whenever
you press the accelerator.
Braking & Safety
The Hyundai Ioniq Electric has a
comprehensive safety equipment list, which
has some noteworthy inclusions like the front,
side, curtain, and knee airbags, ABS with
EBD and brake assist, electric parking brake,
lane keep assist, blind-spot collision warning,
and forward-collision warning.
Service and Warranty
The Ioniq 5 offers Hyundai’s standard fiveyear
and unlimited kilometre warranty, with a
separate eight-year and 160,000km warranty
for the high voltage battery components.
There is a capped price servicing program;
once every 12 months or 15,000km, costing
around $220.
Verdict
Being a technological marvel on four
wheels thanks to ultra-silent and powerful
powertrain and futuristic appeal in and out,
the Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a good and
thoughtful step in the world of future mobility.
The other rival Electric Vehicles are the
Tesla Model 3 and Kia EV6.
