the
benchmark
… for Chilean Cabernet
Chile has proven itself as a formidable home for
Bordeaux varieties, and while Carmenère has
become the country’s signature red grape, what
Chile accomplishes with Cabernet Sauvignon is
certainly no less impressive. Chile’s long, dry growing
season allows the intense flavours and aromas of
Cabernet to fully emerge. This sophisticated wine is
a distinctly Chilean interpretation hailing from the
Maipo Valley, a region known for superbly balanced
reds. Santa Ema ages their Reserve Cabernet in
oak barrels for 10 months, imparting rich notes of
smoke and roasted coffee to the ripe dark-fruit
character inherent in the variety. The result is a
delectably flavour-packed, complex and poised
Cabernet that offers a delicious take on a classic.
Jay Miller of erobertparker.com was also impressed
by this wine, rating it 90 points in Dec. 2010 and
extolling its “aromas of Asian spices, incense, pencil
lead, [and] blackcurrant.”
TASTING NOTE: This well-built red delivers a solid
core of crushed plum and blackberry fruit, with cassis,
violet and dark toast notes that linger on the finish.
BC
British Columbians adore their homegrown wines. So much so in
fact that, over the years, little of it has made its way out of the province
for Ontarians to enjoy. But production among smaller, often familyowned
wineries has increased steadily, and VINTAGES has acquired some
of this bounty. Meet five talented BC producers and their wines, most available
through VINTAGES for the first time ever.
Burrowing Owl Estate Winery
“We don’t believe in resting on our laurels,” says Chris Wyse,
president of Oliver, B.C.’s Burrowing Owl. Since its
founding in 1993, the winery’s objective has been to
produce wines strictly on the premium end of the
spectrum. “We recognize several B.C. wineries are charging
hard on our heels, so we learned a long time ago that
you have to adapt or die.” To maintain their competitive
edge, they’ve continued to invest heavily in beefing up
their winery, adjusting viticulture and winery practices at
the facility set amidst rolling hills in the northern reaches
of the Sonora Desert. “We also do only one group of wines
under the Burrowing Owl name; there are no other tiers,”
Wyse says. By concentrating only on core wines, quality,
and therefore critical and customer acclaim, remains
high. The Wyse family owns 190 acres, both on their
property in Oliver, and elsewhere in the Okanagan and
nearby Similkameen, allowing them to control the vineyard
end of their business. “We don’t want to go beyond
40,000 cases (a figure they’ve not yet reached) so the
family can still maintain control,” adds Wyse. “Any
bigger than that and the personal touch can be lost.”
Dirty Laundry Vineyard
The amusing story behind Dirty Laundry’s name is too
long to tell here, but it’s worth a visit to their website to
read it (dirtylaundry.ca; click on “hush hush”). This
spring, the now clean-living winery completed a $2 million
expansion that saw the renovation of their cellars, tasting
room and vineyards. Currently making around 12,000
cases a year, they plan to eventually produce 20,000.
“I believe in a balanced portfolio,” says Judi Skinner, Dirty
Laundry’s viticulturalist and sales and marketing manager.
“We own about 42 acres over five properties throughout
the Okanagan.” Skinner insists on finding the best
location for each variety they grow. “We’re Gewurztraminer
specialists, so the acreage around the winery [south of
Summerland, up into the hills] is mostly Gewurz. But for
our red Bordeaux blend, Bordello, the grapes come from
the warmer Osoyoos.” Their Woo Woo Gewurztraminer,
featured here, is their best seller. They also grow Pinot
Gris, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay.
Laughing Stock Vineyards
One look at their logo tells you that Laughing Stock
Vineyards co-owners/winemakers David and Cynthia Enns
were formerly in the investment business. There’s a
playfulness in their wines’ names (their flagship red is
Portfolio; their fine second-tier reds and whites go under
the Blind Trust banner) and packaging. But the wines are
serious. “We always wanted to do a few wines very well,”
says Cynthia Enns. To that end, they concentrate on the
red and white Bordeaux grapes, plus Syrah, Pinot Gris,
Viognier and Chardonnay. Very low yields, and the practice
of sourcing fruit from their own vineyards and a select
12 VINTAGES
group of small growers on the Naramata Bench and warm
Osoyoos area, ensures the fruit’s quality. They’ve reached
their preferred production limit of 6,000 cases, which
allows them to be fully hands-on. They recently purchased
a 22-acre vineyard in Osoyoos that they’ve named The
Perfect Hedge, but somehow, based on the quality of their
wines, they don’t seem to need to hedge any bets.
Gehringer Brothers
Gehringer Brothers is a long-time family-owned and
-operated winery that continues to flourish well into its
second generation. Founded in 1973 by Helmut and
Karl Gehringer, it’s now overseen by Helmut’s sons, Walter
and Gordon, who assumed the reins after training in
Germany. Today, from 45 acres, they coax 22 wines under
six different lines, including Dry Rock, from which this
release’s Merlot comes. Each line is focused on specific
varieties or styles of wine; the Dry Rock vineyard is ideal
for growing French varieties, while the vineyards around
the winery confirm their initial focus on aromatic whites.
This site-specific thinking creates wines wonderfully
attuned to their terroir.
See Ya Later Ranch
See Ya Later Ranch has its past in family, and though
the Vincor group has taken it under its umbrella, it still
maintains its small, focused, independent mindset.
The Hawthorne brothers founded the ranch in the early
1900s, then eventually sold to one Major Hugh Fraser,
a colourful character who planted vineyards and owned
the land until his death in 1970. He was a dog fancier
and as each of his pets died, he lovingly buried it on the
property. The wine’s labels, with their image of a winged
white dog, pay homage to Fraser. BC wine pioneer Harry
McWatters took the winery to the next level, crafting
exceptional wines in a variety of styles. Today, See Ya
Later Ranch celebrates all the individualists and families
that helped to make the winery what it is today. Current
winemaker Dave Carson and his crew are creating
wines that respect the heritage, but bring state-of-the-art
technique to bear. The results are award-winning,
critically acclaimed wines.

Divine
intervention
Painstakingly made from delicate grape blossoms
and botanicals, G’Vine gin evokes summer in a glass.
WE SCOUR THE WORLD TO BRING YOU
UNIQUE, HARD-TO-FIND PREMIUM SPIRITS.
THE INSIDE STORY
You might be puzzled at first glance – How do I
pronounce it? What does it mean? – but one
sip of G’Vine and one thing becomes abundantly
clear: this gin is delicious. This is largely due
to the exacting methods that producers Jean
Sébastien Robicquet and Bruno de Reilhac
insist on. Made from grape spirit, and not grain
like many gins, G’Vine (pronounced gee-vine)
is flavoured with fragrant grapevine flowers that
blossom for just a few days in June, before
the grapes develop. They’re handpicked, then
macerated in the grape spirit and distilled
in a small Florentine pot still. Eight other flavourings,
including nutmeg, ginger root, juniper,
cardamom and coriander, are macerated in
distillate separately before being blended
with the floral infusion. Robiquet and de
Reilhac’s company, Eurowinegate, aims to
deliver luxury, which they define as beauty,
creativity, originality, quality and pleasure (not
simply expensive goods), and we think they
do it unequivocally. Oh, and about that label?
Interpret it as you like. Depending on your
focus, it reads either “gin” or “vigne” (french
for vine), and either way, it spells, tastes and
sounds divine.
GOOD TASTE
G’Vine Floraison has been described as “the
very warmth and scent of the arrival of summer”
captured in a bottle, and with good reason.
The delicate, sweet aroma is redolent with floral
botanicals, while the smooth, grassy flavour is
dominated by orange blossom followed by juniper,
cardamom and ginger. This is a well-balanced,
full-bodied, soft gin that will be appreciated by
both gin-drinkers and non-aficionados alike.
Respected spirits critic F. Paul Pacult, in Kindred
Spirits 2, highly recommended this, giving it
White Palette 2010
Great potential waits on the palette
of every artist, but it takes skilled
hands and keen instincts to coax
true art from it. Winemaker Jean-
Pierre Colas prepared his palette
with Gewurztraminer, Chardonnay
Musqué, Riesling and Pinot Gris,
and then incorporated gentle
brushstrokes of Sauvignon Blanc,
Semillon and Chardonnay to
create a masterpiece. With every
taste, you can appreciate how
Jean-Pierre allows each variety to
contribute to the overall character
and structure of this blend without
sacrificing its distinctive attributes.
This is a beautifully balanced
and inspired work of liquid art.
SANTA BARBARA WINERY SYRAH 2009
Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara County
Founded in 1962 by Canadian-born Pierre
Lafond, the Santa Barbara Winery was the first to
Bruce McGuire crafts the wines for both
wineries, sourcing his Syrah grapes from three vineyard
sites in the Santa Ynez Valley. Intense and
concentrated, with layered black fruit and white
pepper notes backed by medium tannins and
gentle acidity. Enjoy this Syrah with smoky barbecued
an impression of softness, like sinking into a feather
pillow, with floral accents and hints of bitter
almonds, and some underlying sweetness as well,
and as it opens some gunflint. It’s atypical with
respect to the other wines tasted. On the palate
it’s ample, with moderately intense lemony fruit that
is supported by and then gives way to savory
bitterness that carries into a long savory bitter finish.
It’s approachable in a richer and rather softer key,
though it does display the savory bitterness typical
of Vernaccia, and will be a good bet if you prefer
whites that are little softer. Score: HHK (Kyle
ABRUZZO
TENUTA ULISSE UNICO
MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO 2009
DOC
The respected wine guide Gambero Rosso
awarded this wine BBM in the 2011 edition.
TASTING NOTE: Inky, opaque ruby. Deep, heady
aromas of smoked meat, mocha, plum, fig, and
tilled earth. Medium-full bodied and dry, with nice
balance between ripe, round fruit and fleshy
tannins. Mouthfilling, medium-long finish. Savour
this wine now with grilled lamb, or cellar for
2-3 years. (VINTAGES panel, June 2011)
TERRA D’ALIGI TATONE
MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO 2007
DOC
Deep purple in the glass with rich notes of ripe
red fruit, violets and spice. This is a wonderfully
well-balanced wine that is deliciously fruity on
the palate. Full bodied, with a lovely, long, spicy
finish. Perfect for spaghetti or manicotti.
CAMPANIA
TERREDORA LACRYMA CHRISTI DEL
VESUVIO ROSSO 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Terredora is firing on all cylinders
these days. Virtually all of the wines I have tasted
recently have been superb. The 2008 Lacryma
Christi is 100% Piedirosso, one of Campania’s indigenous
grapes, that spends eight months in
French oak. This pedigreed red makes an impression
with its bold wild cherries, smoke, ash,
licorice, cracked black pepper and leather, all
nuances that are typical of Piedirosso. Anticipated
maturity: 2010-2014. Score: 90 (Antonio Galloni,
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Deep garnet in the glass with
ripe black fruit, earth, and plum notes with subtle
hints of smoke and spice on the nose. The palate
is dry, with moderate well-incorporated tannins, and
is very nicely structured. Wonderful complexity to
the red and dark fruit, with light spice adding to the
overall depth. Try with grilled lamb or a mushroom
risotto. (VINTAGES panel, July 2010)
SQUINZANO 2007
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Opaque ruby in the glass with
aromas of dried herbs, plum, cranberry, earth,
smoke and leather. The palate is dry and medium
bodied with moderate tannins, notes of plum,
spice and dried cherry, with a tangy mid-palate
and finish. Great with braised meats, grilled steaks
or aged cheeses. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2010)
GIORDANO RICARICO 2008
IGT Salento
TASTING NOTE: Aromas of chocolate mingle delectably
with spice, and red berry tones. Full bodied,
dry and very New World in style, the palate is spicy
and fresh with lovely soft raspberry character and
a balanced finish. Try with a traditional tomato and
meat pasta, or spice things up and try it with chili.
SICILY
NICOSIA FONDO FILARA NERELLO
MASCALESE 2008
IGT Sicilia
Nicosia was founded in the 19th century. To this
day, its best vineyards are on terraced slopes at the
foot of Mount Etna. The Nerello Mascalese variety
is indigenous to Sicily (or is believed to be). This
wine was aged in a combination of stainless steel
and barriques to both retain the freshness of the
variety plus add depth of flavour. The resulting
wine is both racy and rich with a good combination
of black fruits and minerality. Enjoy with meatbased
pastas.
LA VELONA
BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2005
DOCG
(Monade)
TASTING NOTE: The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino
is a relatively forward, open wine laced with
floral red fruit, tobacco, licorice, spices and subtle
earthiness, all of which come together on a
medium-bodied frame. With time in the glass, the
inner sweetness and warmth of the fruit emerges,
adding layers of richness to the texture. Some
slightly unpolished elements remain, particularly on
the finish but this is nevertheless a strong effort.
The wine improved markedly with air and is best
opened a good 30-60 minutes prior to being
served. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020. Score: 92
MONTARO
ROSSO DI MONTALCINO 2006
DOC, Blend No. 136
TASTING NOTE: This Rosso is wearing its
burgeoning maturity very well. Medium ruby-garnet
in colour, with complex notions of ripe strawberry,
red cherry, sandalwood, red licorice and menthol.
Dry, medium bodied, with a spicy red-fruit core.
Shows a flavour intensity that seems to transcend
what should be possible given the elegance of
the wine, but all to very pleasing effect. Balanced
tannins provide fine structure en route to a long
finish. This will evolve favourably for 2+ years, but
why wait? Enjoy it now with braised meats.
PETRA ZINGARI 2008
IGT Toscana
TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Zingari is a blend
of equal parts Sangiovese, Merlot, Syrah and Petit
Verdot aged entirely in stainless steel. It is an
absolutely fabulous entry-level red from Maremma.
Smoke, underbrush, licorice and truffles add
complexity to the generous, dark fruit. Medium in
body yet wonderfully intense, the Zingari impresses
for its sheer richness and density. There is enough
freshness for the Zingari to drink well for a
number of years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2014.
Stylistically, this is a concentrated, voluminous
TASTING NOTE: The estate’s 2005 Vino Nobile di
Montepulciano (100% Prugnolo Gentile) is another
big, powerful wine loaded with dark fruit, leather,
spices and earthiness. This generous, cask-aged
MICHELE CASTELLANI I CASTEI
COSTAMARAN RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA
CLASSICO SUPERIORE 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Ripasso is a special way of
producing Valpolicella in which the wine is passed
over the pomace from Amarone to undergo further
fermentation. This “repassing” creates deeply
coloured and richly flavoured wines. This version
displays aromas and flavours of sweet black
cherry, spice, cedar and dark chocolate. The palate
is dry, medium-full bodied, soft, round and plush
with a wonderful mouthfeel and a dry and flavourful
finish. An ideal match for barbecued ribs.
TASTING NOTE: Lime, herbs, grapefruit, mineral
on the palate with white peach, apple, lime sorbet
elements in balance. Try it with pad Thai or a
Perfect Pairing #3
for a weekend with the girls
SMOKED SALMON
WITH CAPERS, MINT &
AVOCADO BRUSCHETTA
Try with some of the excellent bruschetta toasts
available in your local bakery or supermarket deli.
Topping is best made just before serving, to prevent
avocado from going brown.
1 small, firm but ripe, avocado
2 tsp (10 mL) capers, rinsed and drained well
2 tbsp (30 mL) finely minced red onion
2 tbsp (30 mL) thinly sliced fresh mint leaves
2 tsp (10 mL) olive oil
1 lime
Salt
12 bruschetta toasts
¼ cup (60 mL) cream cheese
12 thin slices smoked salmon, about 4 oz (125 g)
1. Cut avocado in half, scoop out pit and carefully
peel off skin. Dice avocado into small pieces.
Coarsely chop capers. Place both in a bowl along
with red onion, mint, oil and a squeeze of lime
juice. Gently stir to mix. Taste and add more lime
juice or salt if needed.
2. Lightly spread toasts with cream cheese. Lay a
salmon piece overtop, ruffling slightly and cutting to
fit. Mound a spoonful of avocado mixture in centre.
with a second son
Pedigree is everything in Bordeaux,
especially when the ‘house’ is headed
by a Comte. If the first wine of a
great Bordeaux house is like the eldest
son of the family (level-headed with
much expected of it), then the second
wine is the younger scion. Often
from the same fine lineage but from
younger vines, the second wine
offers as much style yet is easiergoing
and more immediately
approachable. Introduce your guests
to Seigneurs d’Aiguilhe the Younger;
they are bound to be impressed.
SEIGNEURS D’AIGUILHE 2009
Castillon, AC Côtes de Bordeaux,
2nd Wine of Château d’Aiguilhe
(Vignobles Comtes von Neipperg)
195172 (XD) 750 mL $19.95
TASTING NOTE: Impressive aromas of
cassis, plum, cedar, blueberry and violet
rise from the glass. The palate is dry,
with tremendous structure, balance and
body, with both ripe and tangy fruit
flavours. Notes of blueberry, plum, and
cedar take precedence but are complemented
by an underlying minerality that
adds even greater depth. The finish is lovely
and long. Delicious. Very approachable
