CHILE – RED WINE CONT’D
EL PRINCIPAL CALICANTO 2009
Pirque, Maipo Valley
TASTING NOTE: (a blend of 56% cabernet
sauvignon and 42% carmenere, with 1% each
of cabernet franc and petit verdot) Youthful
purple. Exotic aromas of raspberry jam, blackcurrant,
mocha and violet, along with a hint
of smokiness. Sweet and juicy but tight, showing
sappy flavors of dark berry compote, peppery
spices and mint. Finishes with fine-grained tannins
and gentle sweetness. This benefits from aeration.
MONTES PURPLE ANGEL 2007
Colchagua Valley
TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Purple Angel is
a blend of Carmenere and Petit Verdot that might
be the only competition for Terrunyo’s Carmin
de Peumo for top Carmenere-based wine in Chile.
Purple/black in color, it displays a splendid nose
of exotic spices, herbs, lavender, incense, blueberry,
and blackberry. Dense, chewy, and opulent
on the palate, this is a rich, already complex
offering that is meant strictly for pleasure-seekers.
Enjoy it from 2013-2022. Score: 94 (Jay Miller,
erobertparker.com, Dec. 2010)
SANTA EMA RESERVE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2008
Maipo Valley
Jay Miller of erobertparker.com was also impressed
by this wine, rating it 90 points in Dec. 2010
and extolling its “aromas of Asian spices, incense,
pencil lead, [and] blackcurrant.”
TASTING NOTE: This well-built red delivers a solid
core of crushed plum and blackberry fruit, with
cassis, violet and dark toast notes that linger on the
finish. Drink now through 2012. Score: 89 (James
Molesworth, winespectator.com, Feb. 28, 2011)
