your reference point for
Napa Valley Merlot
The Napa Valley is a wonderland for growing great
Bordeaux varieties. Intense daytime heat is mitigated
throughout the region by rolling fogs sweeping in
off the Pacific, and cooler-temperature pockets exist
throughout the Valley, especially in the southern
reaches. Whereas varieties like Cabernet thrive in warm
areas, earlier ripeners such as Merlot can work
magic in precisely these more temperate mesoclimates.
Napa Cellars sought out a number of
these spots to grow their Merlot, and it pays dividends
in a wine of superb balance and poise, combining
rich, ripe fruit with a lively freshness and elegance.
NAPA CELLARS MERLOT 2007
Napa Valley, California
161299 (XD) 750 mL $23.95
This wine garnered a Platinum Medal – the highest
honours – at the 2010 San Diego International
Wine Competition.
TASTING NOTE: A great buy in a smooth, dry Merlot
that shows real Napa elegance and style. It’s mediumbodied
and lush, with appealing cherry, currant,
licorice, tobacco, mocha and spice flavors. Drink now
CHILE IS A HOT SPOT IN MORE
VINTAGES 3

The steady rise of a new power
Winemaking in Chile
may go back to
the 16th century,
but it wasn’t until
the mid-19th century
– when wealthy, worldtravelling
Chileans developed a
taste for French grape varieties –
that the modern Chilean winemaking
era was born.
Viticulturalists began importing
cuttings (serendipitously before
the phylloxera louse devastated
the vineyards of Europe) and
experimenting with great grapes
such as Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay
and others. With its dry
conditions, sandy soil and protection
provided by the Andes
mountains, Chile has always
managed to avoid phylloxera
infestations and is one of the few
countries that grows almost
all its vines on original rootstock.
sustainable, organic and
biodynamic practices. LEFT: Top
Chilean winemaker and
renaissance man Aurelio Montes,
of Viña Montes.
During the 19th century, Chile
became one of the first New
World countries to export wine.
A variety of internal and international
political crises caused
Chile to experience a period of
decline throughout the first twothirds
of the 20th century. In
the 1980s, a new generation of
winemakers emerged, including
renaissance man Aurelio Montes,
who had rediscovered the
French varieties. Shortly after,
Chilean wines burst back onto
the international scene and caught
the attention of producers around
the world, resulting in important
investments from several foreign
wine companies, like Miguel Torres
– pioneers in their own right
who had opened a winery in Chile
in 1979.
With the influx of foreign
investment came an increased
level of expertise and a ground-
breaking discovery: in 1994, it
was determined that many of the
vines that growers called Merlot
were actually Carmenère.
Producers quickly adapted their
viticultural techniques to help
it thrive. As the wine scene continued
to grow and evolve, a
new group of producers came to
the fore. This third wave of winemakers
pushed the vineyards into
higher elevations, seeking out
new, cooler climates for fresh white
wines and elegant Pinot Noirs.
Armed with a better understanding
of the terroir and a deep
respect for the land, these modern,
forward-thinkers have also taken
the lead in Chile’s eco-friendly
wine movement.
Today, Chile continues to create
exciting wines at all quality levels.
What’s in the bottle showcases
exactly what winemaking passion
can achieve.

Carmenère is Chile’s signature
red grape, but this orphan from
Bordeaux took its place of
honour by chance. For decades,
local winemakers thought
Carmenère vines were Merlot,
as the original cuttings had
been labelled as such. In 1994,
Jean-Michel Boursiquot, a
French ampelographer (a botanist
who classifies grapevines)
identified the variety’s true colours,
and the Chileans embraced
the discovery with gusto. The
rest is vinous history.

Southwest France, get ready for a revelation –
this area has long been home to some of the French wine scene’s best-kept secrets. Tucked
away inland just south of Bordeaux, this cluster of wine regions has an ancient and proud winegrowing
history that actually predates that of the Médoc. Once upon a time, the area was
legendary as the preferred wine country of Kings and Czars. Recently, these regions have enjoyed
a well-deserved resurgence, thanks to winemaking advances and greater international exposure.
Cahors is the ancestral home of Malbec, and has been perfecting it since the
Middle Ages. Warmer than Bordeaux, this climate is able to ripen Malbec to make
robust, flavourful and distinctive versions.
Madiran is known for deep, dark, long-lived wines made from Tannat. Since this
grape is exceptionally tannic (hence the name), winemakers here have explored new-oak
barrels and micro-oxygenation techniques to soften them for earlier accessibility.
Negrette is the grape at the heart of Fronton, where it creates floral, enticingly
aromatic, elegant reds. It also lends itself well to blending, either with other local grapes
or with international varieties.
Gaillac is thought to be one of the earliest-established French wine regions.
Peppery, plush red wines crafted here are made with Fer Servadou (aka Braucol),
a variety named for the iron-like strength of its vines – though the wines too
show plenty of hardiness.

Scotland
n
On January 25th, Scotch aficionados the
world over will celebrate Robbie Burns Day.
Just what is the poet’s claim to fame?
Robert Burns, known as the Ploughman Poet, celebrated the
moments and characters of everyday life. Burns’ poetry both inspired
ordinary people and influenced the likes of Wordsworth. His love of
life and intimate understanding of the toll of physical labour gave his
work a universal appeal that resonates even today. The first Burns
Suppers commemorated the anniversary of his death, but by
1802 the focus had shifted to celebrating his birth. Today, Scots – and
Scots-for-a-day – gather throughout the world on January 25th to
toast Rabbie (as his countrymen fondly call him) and his legacy. In 2009,
Burns was voted the “Greatest Scot,” defeating Sir William Wallace,
of Braveheart fame, and proving that the pen is indeed mightier than
the sword.

Riesling
A natural fit with Ontario’s cool
climate, ever-expressive and eminently ageable
Riesling thrives in the hands of Niagara winemakers.
26 VINTAGES
Many grape nuts consider Riesling the most venerable,
age-worthy and downright interesting white variety in the world. Standing
“naked” without oak ageing and rarely blended with other varieties, it exposes
every nuance of its origins. In its native Germany – depending on varying soils,
microclimates and harvest times – the permutations of Riesling’s character are
endless. These infinite shadings around its straightforward, refreshing and
food-friendly core of acidity keep wine aficionados coming back for more.
Climate control
From the earliest days of Ontario’s wine renaissance, Riesling was
pegged as a natural in Niagara’s cool climate. In the 1970s, the
federal government even provided a grant to Hermann Weiss, to
plant the Weiss Riesling clone he’d developed in Mosel, Germany.
Weiss sculpted the land, planted the vineyard and built the winery
that became Vineland Estates. His assumptions about his version
of the variety were correct: it thrived in Niagara. Riesling ripens late,
so in all but the warmest years, Niagara’s climate accentuates its
brilliant acidity and piquant flavours. “2008 was a very good vintage
for Riesling,” says Jackson-Triggs winemaker Marco Piccoli. “Cooler
summer temperatures and cold nights during October created intense,
floral varietal aromas.”
Down to earth
Although other grapes, like Chardonnay, are very successful in
Niagara, Riesling’s purity of expression captures Niagara’s limestoneladen
soil perfectly, especially on “Bench” or Niagara Escarpment
sites. The limestone adds chalky, stony minerality to the brisk
acidity, creating some of the most vibrant, mouth-watering whites on
the planet. But as in Germany, different sites offer different nuances,
especially as vines mature. According to Matt Loney of Creekside
Estate Winery, the 35-year-old clay- and limestone-pebbled Butler’s
Grant Vineyard “creates a distinctive ginger note in Riesling. In the
Ontario’s cool climate is a natural fit for Riesling
grapes; breezes from Lake Ontario help make
the Niagara Peninsula a prime growing area.
warmest vintages, it’s often like ginger/
pear, and cooler years it delivers
ginger/key lime aromatics.”
Ageing gracefully
The best structured Rieslings from
these same lower-yielding, older
vine sites age longer than any other
commonly grown white variety (the
first Niagara Riesling producers like
Vineland, Cave Spring and Henry of
Pelham all have older vintage libraries
as proof). Henry of Pelham’s Daniel
Speck predicts their 2008 Riesling
Reserve, harvested from vines planted
in 1984, will develop secondary
characteristics and improve with
3 to 8 years cellaring. As it ages, the
characteristics will include aromas
of honey, apricot, perhaps even
caramel. The wine also will begin
to taste drier as it matures.
The Age
of Reason
It’s an age-old belief: White wines
don’t tend to age as well as reds.
But Riesling often proves to be an
exception to this rule. Thanks to
its relatively high acidity and an
array of complex flavour compounds,
Riesling has enough
structure and backbone to age
beautifully, becoming rounder and
more graceful over time. Typically,
Ontario Rieslings can be laid
down for 3-8 years; the very best
vintages will reach their peak
after 20 to 50 – yes, 50 – years.
Salty & Smoky
THE INSIDE STORY
Perhaps no other whisky distillery in the world
is as fervently dedicated to tradition as Springbank.
Founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still,
Springbank is the oldest family-owned distillery in
Scotland, producing handmade single malts
loved by whisky aficionados around the world. The
distillery malts its own barley using traditional
floor maltings – one of just a few operations in
Scotland using this painstaking method. Timehonoured
traditions aside, this is a whisky worth its
salt. Indeed, it boasts a subtle salty character that
intensifies as the spirit ages, accenting the myriad
flavours within (much the way table salt heightens
the flavours in foods). This Springbank hallmark
comes courtesy of the distillery’s coastal location
near Argyll, which means strong winds that blow
damp sea air into the draughty warehouses. Way
back in 1838, Johnnie Walker bought whisky from
Springbank to create his now-famous blends;
when we discovered this one a century and a half
later, we liked it too – so much so that we followed
his lead and put it on our shelves.
GOOD TASTE
A new favourite with Springbank whisky fans,
this 12-year-old is one of the most complex of all
malt whiskies. It’s golden-straw coloured, and
has oak influences, with aromas of grass, hay, leather,
tar and a faint peatiness. Full bodied, with
sweet, rounded flavours and hints of licorice, bitter
oranges, pine resin and cinchona (a tree with
medicinal bark that yields quinine). The finish is
long and rich, with a hint of smoke.
SERVE IT UP
Bottled at cask strength, this whisky is designed
for the addition of pure water to suit individual
taste; the added water will also coax out notes of
black tea and cinnamon. Purists might enjoy
it neat.
delicate, lively and well balanced with peachapricot,
TASTING NOTE: Pale straw with a youthful green
nectarine, mineral and fresh marjoram. Off-dry,
fresh and fruity, with lots of lime and nectarine
replaying on the palate. At first, the acids seem
moderate because they’re so perfectly integrated
in this richly textured wine. As the flavours persist,
TASTING NOTE: The Clos du Bois 2009 North
SPORTOLETTI ASSISI ROSSO 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Sportoletti’s Assisi Rosso is one of
the great values in Italian wine, and the 2008 is
another in a long line of gorgeous wines. Ripe red
cherries, tobacco, sweet herbs and spices are
some of the nuances that emerge from this juicy,
plump offering. The 2008 is a touch more lithe
than some previous vintages but it is nevertheless
outstanding for its overall balance and sense
of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
Score: 89 (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com,
VENETO
CORTE MAJOLI RIPASSO VALPOLICELLA
SUPERIORE 2007
DOC
Vanio Tezza represents a new generation of
Veneto winemakers. While still in his 20s, he
took over the family estate after the death of his
father. He operates with the utmost respect for
the traditions of Ripasso production, but also
brings a modern flair to every wine the property
produces. Layered and complex with notes of
ripe plum, raspberry and cocoa, this wine is
medium-full bodied, round, rich and fruity. All of
the elements are in perfect balance. Enjoy this
with braised beef dishes.
MONTE ZOVO SA’ SOLIN RIPASSO
VALPOLICELLA 2008
DOC
Year after year, this fabulous Ripasso is a major hit
with VINTAGES customers. It’s fruit-forward with
layers of cranberry, cherry, herb, peppery spice
and meaty notes. Dry with a medium-full body
and a lingering finish, it has the structure to match
flavourful dishes such as roast leg of lamb or
gourmet pizza with the works. Its upfront style also
makes it a pleasant sipping wine.
SARTORI L’APPASSITO
ROSSO 2008
IGT Veneto
This is a rich and invigorating wine with intense
aromas of dried fruit and spice. Its unusual blend of
Corvina Veronese, Molinara, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Merlot prevents this wine from being called a
Ripasso, but it is made in the same manner. The
palate is dry and tremendously well structured with
integrated tannins that work wonderfully well
with the vibrant fruit. Try this tonight with grilled
roast beef or with a platter of flavourful cheeses.
TOMMASI VIGNETO
LE PRUNÉE MERLOT 2008
IGT delle Venezie
Tommasi has been producing wines for nearly
110 years. Their single-vineyard Merlot, with its
deep ruby-red colour and chocolate, berry and
cappuccino notes, is a real crowd-pleaser. This
wine is the perfect way to add a touch of elegance
to an evening. Easy-drinking and superbly
food-friendly, it is a natural partner for meaty pasta.
VILLA GIRARDI AMARONE DELLA
VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO 2005
DOC
Made using Corvina Veronese, Rondinella and
Molinara, this wine uses grapes that are first fully
dried on mats before being pressed and then
aged for 3 years in 35-litre Slovanian oak barrels.
The resulting wine is filled with aromas and flavours
of black plum, sweet cherry, vanilla, dried
meat and dark chocolate. This dry, intense wine
is an excellent match for rich meat dishes, or enjoy
it after a hearty meal with dark chocolate
(70% cacao and above).
PORTUGAL – WHITE WINE
VENTOZELO
QV BRANCO 2009
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: Moscatel dominates the blend of
this wine and gives a perfumed character. It has
some good weight and freshness, a bright green
plum and pear flavor. The acidity and ripe fruit
are well in balance. Score: 88 (Roger Voss, Wine
PORTUGAL – RED WINE
CARDEAL RESERVA TOURIGA
NACIONAL 2007
DOC Dão
TASTING NOTE: Youthful, deep ruby in the glass,
this Silver Medal winner at the 2010 Concours
Mondial de Bruxelles is a fantastic value. Made
with the prime grape in neighbouring Porto,
this dry version has aromas of macerated berry,
licorice, sweet spice, red fruits and oak. The
dry, medium-bodied palate offers spicy red fruit
and toasty oak, and demonstrates great balance
between the fruit, medium tannins and acidity. The
finish is balanced with lovely fruit throughout. Enjoy
this with pork roast. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
191346 (XD) 750 mL $13.95 2
CASA DE SANTAR RED 2007
DOC Dão
TASTING NOTE: This estate was originally
established in 1640, and has been in the same
family for 13 generations. The blend here is
primarily Touriga Nacional, sporting aromas of dark
berry and tobacco that continue on the palate
alongside juicy cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, red
licorice and delicate vanilla. A balanced, spicy
red with nice minerality and good length. A fine
partner for herb-roasted lamb or venison.
(VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
190710 (D) 750 mL $14.95 2
MESSIAS GRANDE ESCOLHA 2007
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: Beyond rich—certainly as far as
its alcohol is concerned—this is in fact a finely
balanced wine. The fruit is intensely ripe, sweet, but
it is delicious in the glass. The black berries are
like syrup, smooth and creamy. Pepper, nutmeg
and toast give added interest … Score: 88
SPAIN – RED WINE
BUIL & GINÉ GINÉ GINÉ 2007
DOCa Priorat
TASTING NOTE: Half of the fruit for this juicy
blend comes from young vines, half from old-vine
cariñena and garnacha. The fruit is delightfully
red, prettier and more accessible than what has
become typical in Priorat. There’s refinement to
the acidity that lends the wine its nerve. For roast
partridge. Score: 91 (Patricio Tapia, Wine &
Spirits, Oct. 2009)
067843 (XD) 750 mL $17.95 2
BURGO VIEJO
GRAN RESERVA 2000
DOCa Rioja
TASTING NOTE: An outstanding value for a Riojan
Gran Reserva. This wine has a finely aged floral
bouquet, and is brimming with spicy berry, fig,
raisin, dark chocolate, marzipan, and a touch
of leather. It’s medium to full bodied, with excellent
length. Delicious with linguini alfredo, or roasted
veal. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
TRESDECINCO 2004
DO Ribera del Júcar
Jay Miller (from www.erobertparker.com) gave
this wine a score of 90 in February of 2009.
Although he recommended the wine, no tasting
note was provided. This is a blend of Syrah,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Look for fresh
berry aromas and flavours, with velvety tannins
for structure. Enjoy with rich lamb stews.
CASA DE LA ERMITA
ROBLE 2008
DO Jumilla
TASTING NOTE: Jumilla, with its Monastrellbased
(aka Mourvèdre) wines, is an up-and-coming
Spanish wine region, and this one shows why.
This is a blend of Monastrell and Petit Verdot.
Candied berry, menthol, blackberry and a hint
of raisin aromas and flavours are front and centre in
this pretty, fruity wine. Dry, with a robust texture
and mouthfeel. A crowd-pleaser for pasta, pizza or
gourmet sausages. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
LA MULTA OLD VINE
GARNACHA 2008
DO Calatayud
TASTING NOTE: This wine is crafted by Norrel
Robertson, MW, known in Spain as “El Escocés
Volante,” or “The Flying Scotsman.” This wellstructured
Garnacha boasts a smoky, black-fruit
nose that gives way to mouth-watering aromas
and flavours of intense spice, coffee, plum and
black cherry. The flavours circulate beautifully
on the palate, wrapping up with a fruity, warm
finish. Excellent value to be had here. See for
yourself alongside some ginger chicken or
shepherd’s pie. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
GRA 2 2008
DOCa Rioja, Graciano
TASTING NOTE: Bright ruby. Pungent aromas of
cassis, raspberry, graphite and potpourri. Fresh and
spicy, with sweet red and dark berry flavors and a
strong mineral underpinning. Finishes with a strong
jolt of candied flowers and lingering spiciness. All
of the wines in this group were raised in stainless
steel and never saw wood. Score: 90 (Josh
VINYES D’EN GABRIEL
L’HERAVI 2009
DO Montsant
(Josep Maria Anguera)
TASTING NOTE: Monstant is located right
beside the respected Priorat region. This estate’s
winemaking tradition goes back to the 19th
Century. Primarily Grenache, this fruit-forward red
exudes aromas of fresh berry and spice, leading
to sweet flavours of cherry, raspberry, and ripe pear.
A medium-bodied blend, with good concentration
and length. Serve and relax with a roasted
Planning an Italian festa? Then
make sure to serve this exceptional
Tuscan Chianti Classico Riserva
from a fine vintage, 2006, and
respected producer, Rocca delle
Macìe. Tuscan wines, like Tuscan
foods, feature simple ingredients
put together in a simple way to create
something complex and stimulating.
Setting a classic tone might include
serving this fine wine with bistecca
alla Fiorentina, roast potatoes
and green beans in tomato sauce.
Keep the olive oil nearby for dipping
fresh bread, and your feast
will be simply delicious.
TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Chianti
Classico Riserva is a big, super-ripe wine
loaded with black cherries, blueberries,
French oak and spices. Stylistically, this
is a concentrated, voluminous Riserva
with terrific persistence and balance. It is
one of the finest wines I have tasted
here in some time. The Riserva spent 24
months in French oak. Anticipated
maturity: 2012-2018. Score: 90 (Antonio
