Napa Valley Merlot
The Napa Valley is a wonderland for growing great
Bordeaux varieties. Intense daytime heat is mitigated
throughout the region by rolling fogs sweeping in
off the Pacific, and cooler-temperature pockets exist
throughout the Valley, especially in the southern
reaches. Whereas varieties like Cabernet thrive in warm
areas, earlier ripeners such as Merlot can work
magic in precisely these more temperate mesoclimates.
Napa Cellars sought out a number of
these spots to grow their Merlot, and it pays dividends
in a wine of superb balance and poise, combining
rich, ripe fruit with a lively freshness and elegance.
NAPA CELLARS MERLOT 2007
Napa Valley, California
161299 (XD) 750 mL $23.95
This wine garnered a Platinum Medal – the highest
honours – at the 2010 San Diego International
Wine Competition.
TASTING NOTE: A great buy in a smooth, dry Merlot
that shows real Napa elegance and style. It’s mediumbodied
and lush, with appealing cherry, currant,
licorice, tobacco, mocha and spice flavors. Drink now
for the immediate appeal. Score: 90 (Wine Enthusiast,
