ITALY – RED WINE
FRIULI
DI LENARDO MERLOT 2009
IGT Venezia Giulia
Bright ruby in the glass with blackberry, cherry,
and cedar aromas with some mushroom and
black olive notes. The palate is dry and very well
balanced and supple with good fruit and a
medium-long finish. Enjoy with hearty winter
fare, such as rabbit stew.
PIEDMONT
BOERI MONFERRATO DOLCETTO 2009
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Boeri has been producing wine
since 1890. Their 2009 Dolcetto offers solid value,
and serves up notes of plum, beetroot, cherry
and herb on the nose. This wine shows great
structure, with the tannins and acidity in harmony.
Dry, fresh and fruity, it leaves you with a lipsmacking
medium-long finish. Pair with cured
meats, or aged cheeses. (VINTAGES panel,
PATRIZI BAROLO 2006
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Barolo is often described as
one of Italy’s greatest wines. This incarnation is an
excellent value, brimming with earthy raspberry,
blackberry, almond and chocolate notes, with just
a smidge of tilled earth. A full-bodied Nebbiolo
that you can hang on to for about 5 years, or serve
up tonight with rare meat or game. (VINTAGES
panel, March 2010)
PUGLIA
AMPELO MALVASIA
NERA 2008
IGT Salento
Malvasia is an ancient grape of Greek origin that
produces wines of great character. This example
is no exception, showing ruby red in the glass,
with cherry and cloves on the nose. Full bodied
and dry, with a delicious medium-long finish.
It will work tonight with roast pork tenderloin in
a wild mushroom sauce.
SICILY
FONDO FILARA
NERO D’AVOLA 2008
IGT Sicilia
(Cantine Nicosia)
TASTING NOTE: Nero d’Avola is one of Sicily’s
most prized grape varieties. A floral nose leads to
sumptuous aromas and flavours of berry, spiced
plum, chocolate, and dried herbs. A mediumbodied
red with an oaky, fruity centre and light
tannins. Enjoy this taste of Sicily with a
Neapolitan pizza, or pasta alla Norma. (VINTAGES
panel, June 2010)
207811 (D) 750 mL $15.95 1
TUSCANY
ALTESINO ROSSO DI ALTESINO 2008
IGT Toscana
From one of Brunello di Montalcino’s most
prominent producers comes this unoaked blend
of 80% Sangiovese, plus dollops of Cabernet
Sauvignon and Merlot. As a result of no oak
contact, Altesino’s forward fruitiness takes centre
stage. Filled with vibrant raspberry, plum and
sour cherry, it is dry, fruity, balanced and longfinishing.
This is a wine that calls out for a grilled
steak with mushrooms and onions.
