ITALY – RED WINE CONT’D
TUSCANY
BELLINI CHIANTI RUFINA
RISERVA 2006
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: ... Nice balance in a fairly
traditional key. On the palate it’s ample, with fairly
rich cherry fruit supported by tart cherry acidity
and by smooth sweet tannins that have a slightly
greenish underpinning, and flow into a clean tart
berry fruit finish. It’s fairly direct, but this is also
youth, and if you like the more traditional style it is
pleasant, and will drink well with succulent red
meats or stews, while it also has the capacity to age
well for many years ... Score: HHK (Kyle Phillips,
LA VELONA BRUNELLO
DI MONTALCINO RISERVA 2004
DOCG
Antonio Galloni, of www.erobertparker.com, gave
this wine a score of 94 (April 2010).
TASTING NOTE: The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino
Riserva is powerful, rich and authoritative. This
Brunello Riserva promises love at first sight and sip.
The wine is thick, penetrating and rich and offers
deep layers of sweet blackberry, cherry cola,
mesquite wood, leather and discreet toast. It’s the
fullness and generosity of fruit that will blow you
away followed by those vibrant cherry after tones.
LUCIANI BRUNELLO DI
MONTALCINO 2004
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: This tasty Brunello has a light
leather and cherry nose. Juicy raspberry, cranberry,
chestnut, tea leaves and cedar spice bathe the
palate, with many lovely replays of fruit. A crisp,
medium-bodied red that nicely exemplifies why
Brunello has remained so adored. An Italian classic
to enjoy alongside a grilled steak or veal
parmagiana. (VINTAGES panel, March 2010)
This value-priced wine has great structure and is
tantalizingly fruity on the palate, offering up
plum, smoke, floral and herbal tones. The finish
ROCCA DELLE MACÌE CHIANTI
CLASSICO RISERVA 2006
DOCG, Estate Btld.
(Familia Zingarelli)
TASTING NOTE: The 2006 Chianti Classico Riserva
is a big, super-ripe wine loaded with black cherries,
blueberries, French oak and spices. Stylistically, this
is a concentrated, voluminous Riserva with terrific
persistence and balance. It is one of the finest
wines I have tasted here in some time. The Riserva
spent 24 months in French oak. Anticipated
maturity: 2012-2018. Score: 90 (Antonio Galloni,
UMBRIA
SPORTOLETTI ASSISI ROSSO 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Sportoletti’s Assisi Rosso is one of
the great values in Italian wine, and the 2008 is
another in a long line of gorgeous wines. Ripe red
cherries, tobacco, sweet herbs and spices are
some of the nuances that emerge from this juicy,
plump offering. The 2008 is a touch more lithe
than some previous vintages but it is nevertheless
outstanding for its overall balance and sense
of harmony. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013.
Score: 89 (Antonio Galloni, www.erobertparker.com,
