benchmark
your reference point for
Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
New Zealand made Sauvignon Blanc a household
name, and no other region has cultivated it as
a specialty quite like Marlborough. Their Savvies are
truly distinctive: intensely aromatic, big and rich,
bursting with tropical fruit (think guava and passion
fruit) as well as trademark asparagus and freshcut
grass characteristics. One big reason for Savvy’s
success in Marlborough is careful site selection.
Dog Point Vineyard has found a cozy little nook along
the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island,
where perfect soil, abundant sunshine and oceanmoderated
evening temperatures provide the
ideal conditions for full-flavoured Sauvignon Blancs.
DOG POINT VINEYARD
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009
Marlborough, South Island, New Zealand
677450 (D) 750 mL $19.95
TASTING NOTE: Strongly aromatic wine with
pungent passion fruit, green capsicum and lemon
grass flavours. The wine is dry but achieves
good tension between alcohol sweetness and juicy
acidity. Concentrated Sauvignon Blanc that
captures the best features of the regional style.
Lately, South African
wines have been
making great strides
in quality. This summer,
raise a glass of the
country’s finest at
a braai – a traditional
barbecue feast. With
soccer victories playing
out across South Africa,
the time is right
core!
for a toast!

VINTAGES 3

‘‘ ’’
South Africa [is] one of the most attractive emerging
wine regions in the world today ... The best are fresh,
juicy wines that combine vivid, New World-style fruit
with racy, Old World-style structure and minerality.
bring on the
braai
The braai (rhymes with try) is a
vital part of South African social life.
Started by the Afrikaners, braai essentially
means “barbecue,” and refers to
both the grill and the event itself, where
friends and neighbours come and go
with meat to cook and wines to share.
Braai grills are large and there’s often
more than one, fired with wood or coal.
Steaks, sausages (particularly the
local delicacy boerewors), ribs, burgers,
chicken, shellfish and oth e r seafood
all share space over the flames. Great
music is playing and the conversation
is lively. Serve fine South African wines
(naturally!) at your own version of the
braai. Made with state-of-the-art equipment
and fruit from vineyards planted
with grape varieties perfectly suited to
the terroir, they’re just the thing for this
casual yet refined open-air celebration.
In South Africa, September 24th is
both National Heritage Day and National
Braai Day.
––James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, April 30, 2009
Large grills will be placed
over this blazing fire to
cook the evening’s feast.

impart rich, smoky, cinnamon-spice character to
The 2003 vintage was declared by select Port
houses, such as Jose Maria da Fonseca &
clearly worthy of the Vintage Port designation,
and this bottling offers eye-popping value. You
can cellar this, but why wait? – it’s already
starting to show beautifully. Look for aromas and
flavours of ripe and dried fruit, mocha and
tannin, but it is smoothing out beautifully. Decant
Campolieti means “happy fields,” a very
appropriate name considering the high quality of
the grapes used in this wine. Only happy vines
could produce wines this good. Righetti’s ripe,
with lamb or beef dishes.
DOC
Ripasso (or “re-passing”) involves fermenting the
wine a second time on dried Amarone grapes.
This process deepens the wine’s colour, body,
aroma, taste and ageability. Farina’s Ripasso
features aromas of pepper spice, licorice, cherries,
and ginger, all contributing to a medium-bodied,
long-finishing wine. Try it with grilled veal chops
and herbed tomato salad.
2 tbsp (25 mL) ketchup
1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh rosemary
2 tbsp (25 mL) olive oil
how to shop
for VINTAGES products:
VINTAGES is the fine wine and premium spirits business unit
of the LCBO. Products featured in this catalogue may be
obtained in two ways:
1. Shopping in person at a VINTAGES location on or after the
Release date. Note: Supplies are limited and product
availability will vary from store to store. Customers in the
Toronto and Ottawa areas must shop in person.
2. Ordering specific VINTAGES products through your local
LCBO or VINTAGES store. This is a service we provide for
our customers who live outside the Toronto and Ottawa
areas only.
• Important – customers must submit their ‘requests’ to
their local LCBO store by 11 am the Tuesday before
the Release date.
•VINTAGES allocates a percentage of products in each
release to fulfill ‘customer requests’. This does not
guarantee availability as VINTAGES products are purchased
in finite quantities and are sometimes extremely limited
and/or in very high demand.
• Store staff can order as many bottles as you require
subject to availability.
NEW – Transferring Products From Other Stores:
VINTAGES customers may now ask for product including ISDs
to be t ransferred between stores if stock is still available
2 weeks after the release date. Please contact your local
LCBO store to make arrangements.
VINTAGES catalogues are available online at www.vintages.com.
Our website also features product search, special offers,
events, store locations and other information.
Let’s Keep in Touch:
to sign up for our mailing list. This is a free service and your
p rivacy is assured.
Help keep us up-to-date. If you are a subscriber and are
with an Italian Classic
Fellini, Bertolucci, Rossellini...
whatever you and your fellow cinema
buffs have lined up for Italian
film night, this stylish Pinot Grigio
will complete the mise en scène.
Smooth, subtle and eminently versatile,
it’s equally comfortable
playing the cool, casual sipper, or
co-starring with a diverse ensemble
of foods. This audience favourite
is sure to be declared the hit of
the season.
TIEFENBRUNNER PINOT GRIGIO
2009
DOC Südtirol-Alto Adige, Italy
954024 (XD) 750 mL $16.95
TASTING NOTE: Delightfully aromatic
Pinot Grigio that shows what the wine
can be when great care is taken in making
it. Pear, apple, green plum, citrus and
spring flowers are just some of the aromas
here. Dry, ripe and round with a compelling
acidity to give it fine freshness.
Medium bodied with a medium-long
finish. A great partner for crab meat salads,
or other cold seafood or chicken dishes.
It’s a good palate-refresher too.
