FRANCE – RED WINE CONT’D
BORDEAUX
CHÂTEAU PIRON 2006
AC Montagne St-Émilion
(Les Fils Rémy Fressineau, Prop.-Vitic.)
TASTING NOTE: (Translated from the French)
The 2006 continues its nice evolution. Very
beautiful garnet colour. It combines aromatic
concentration and a suppleness on the palate,
and features aromas and flavours of cherry and
spice. A lovely wine, full in the mouth. (Patrick
Dussert-Gerber, www.millesimes.fr, Undated)
BEAUJOLAIS
DOMAINE DU RIAZ
CÔTE-DE-BROUILLY 2008
AC
(Les Vins Georges Duboeuf)
TASTING NOTE: The 2008 Cote de Brouilly Domaine
du Riaz is strikingly scented with fresh blueberry,
huckleberry, iris, and wet stones, all of which carry
over to an invigoratingly bitter yet generouslyfruited
and softly-textured palate, culminating in a
finish possessing more than enough brightness
and a decisive mineral character. Here is one of
the Duboeuf crus that suggests a few years’
cellaring would not be too many. Score: 89 (David
Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2009)
VILLA DES ANGES
CABERNETSAUVIGNON 2008
Vins de Pays d’Oc
(Jacqueline Menard de Ginestous)
TASTING NOTE: Villa des Anges 2008 Cabernet
Sauvignon is as remarkable and improbable a wine
value as I have tasted in years ... a full-bodied,
subtly oily-textured, palpably dense, lip-smacking,
not vegetal, yet not sweet Cabernet in the
Languedoc … Juniper, huckleberry, mint, rosemary,
black walnut, dark chocolate, and green olive are
prominent in the nose and on the palate, leading
to a considerable finish ... Score: 89 (David
Schildknecht, www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2009)
RHÔNE
DOMAINE DE SAINTSIFFREIN
CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE 2007
AC
TASTING NOTE: The finest effort I have yet tasted
from this estate, the 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape
is composed of 65% Grenache, 15% Syrah,
15% Mourvedre, and 5% Cinsault. Its traditional
upbringing included 100% aging in old foudres.
Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by a big,
sweet, juicy kiss of kirsch liqueur intermixed
with blacker fruits, raspberries, licorice, camphor,
and hints of lavender and incense. The wine
exhibits terrific concentration, full-bodied intensity,
and a 45-50-second finish. This sensational
Chateauneuf du Pape will benefit from another
2-3 years of bottle age, and should drink well
for 15-20 years. Score: 94 (Robert Parker Jr.,
www.erobertparker.com, Oct. 2009)
DOMAINE DU SÉMINAIRE
PRESTIGE VALRÉAS
CÔTES DU RHÔNE-VILLAGES 2007
AC
TASTING NOTE: This is ripe, with raspberry and
boysenberry fruit, but also racy, with a nice
graphite edge and lingering spice notes. Very
tasty. Grenache and Syrah. From the 2007
harvest, but label printed without the vintage.
Drink now. Score: 89 (James Molesworth,
www.winespectator.com, June 30, 2009)
LES PILIERS SYRAH 2007
AC Costières de Nîmes
(M. Gassier, Vign.-Élev.)
TASTING NOTE: Quite toasty, with fig and licorice
aromas and flavors, backed by dark currant
paste, tar and spice notes. Long and fleshy
through the polished finish. For the hedonist
crowd. Drink now through 2010. Score: 90
