GREECE – RED WINE
TSANTALI MOSCHOMAVRO 2008
Makedonikos Regional Wine
Moschomavro is a unique rose- and plum-scented
red wine from Macedonia; it is very responsive
to a light chill, which accentuates the fruit and the
acids. In June 2008, Wine & Spirits magazine
listed Tsantali as one of Greece’s top value brands.
Enjoy this round and fleshy wine on a hot summer’s
evening on the patio with a fried chicken dinner.
HUNGARY – WHITE WINE
ROYAL TOKAJI TOKAJI ASZÚ
BLUE LABEL 5 PUTTONYOS2005
In 2009, this was ranked #44 on Wine Spectator’s
prestigious Top 100 list.
TASTING NOTE: Slight oxidation adds nutty
accents and an iodine note to this sinewy dessert
white. There’s not a lot of flesh, yet this is
intense and complex, with apricot, honey, smoke,
spice and mineral flavors that won’t quit. This
has a dry, chalky feel on the finish. Drink now
through 2025. Score: 94 (Bruce Sanderson,
ITALY – WHITE WINE
ALTO ADIGE
TIEFENBRUNNER PINOT GRIGIO 2009
DOC Südtirol-Alto Adige
TASTING NOTE: Delightfully aromatic Pinot
Grigio that shows what the wine can be when
great care is taken in making it. Pear, apple,
green plum, citrus and spring flowers are just
some of the aromas here. Dry, ripe and round
with a compelling acidity to give it fine freshness.
Medium bodied with a medium-long finish. A
great partner for crab meat salads, or other cold
seafood or chicken dishes. It’s a good palaterefresher
too. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
PIEDMONT
MARCHESI DI BAROLO
ZAGARA MOSCATO D’ASTI
DOCG
One of the perfect late spring/early summer wines
is Piedmont’s gently sparkling, slightly sweet,
low-alcohol Moscato d’Asti. Perfect for those casual
afternoon get-togethers on the backyard patio,
especially when served with simple seafood
nibblies or just-in-season strawberries.
SICILY
CARUSO & MININI ISULA
CATARRATTO 2008
IGT Sicilia
This wine won a Gold Medal at the 2009 Mundus
Vini competition in Germany. Catarratto is a white
grape native to Sicily, grown widely along its
western coast and on the island of Marsala. It is
the second-most cultivated white wine variety in
Italy after Trebbiano. In the past, it was only used
in the making of Marsala, but it has found its
place as a single-varietal table wine. Hallmark
characteristics of Catarratto are peach and
nectarine fruit aromas and flavours. A lovely
aperitif, or a delicious match for shellfish and
pan-fried freshwater fish.
ITALY – RED WINE
CALABRIA
LIBRANDI DUCA SAN FELICE RISERVA
ROSSO 2007
DOC Cirò
Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2010 gave this
wine BBB (their highest rating) – a remarkable
achievement, especially for such a modestly
priced wine. Made with the indigenous Gaglioppo
grape, the Cirò region’s red wines tend to be
robust and flavourful, if rarely subtle. We found
this ripe, fruity wine displayed lovely balance,
making it more elegant than most. Enjoy it with
short ribs or grilled steak.
