FORTIFIED WINE
PORT
JOSÉ MARIA DA FONSECA &
VAN ZELLER VINTAGE PORT 2003
DOC Douro, Btld. 2005
The 2003 vintage was declared by select Port
houses, such as Jose Maria da Fonseca &
Van Zeller. The conditions in their vineyards were
clearly worthy of the Vintage Port designation,
and this bottling offers eye-popping value. You
can cellar this, but why wait? – it’s already
starting to show beautifully. Look for aromas and
flavours of ripe and dried fruit, mocha and
vanilla. This sweet wine will still show a core of
tannin, but it is smoothing out beautifully. Decant
and enjoy with a fine Stilton.
SPARKLING WINE
ROEDERER ESTATE BRUT
SPARKLING WINE
Anderson Valley, California, USA
TASTING NOTE: A rich version, loaded with spicy
cinnamon notes. Bold apple aromas, with a whiff
of yeast, lead to complex, layered pear, crème
brûlée and baked apple flavors that linger. Drink
now. Score: 91 (Tim Fish, www.winespectator.com,
FRANÇOIS LABETBRUT
CRÉMANTDE BOURGOGNE
AC, Burgundy, France
TASTING NOTE: Slight pink tinge and somewhat
rustic styling overall, with bruised apple and
lemon custard aromas. The palate is just off dry,
round, full, with vibrant acid and moderate
length. A more masculine sparkler overall, for
fans of earthy, traditional styles. Score: 88 (John
Szabo, M.S., www.wineaccess.ca, Undated)
MAUSBERG BLANC DE BLANCS
BRUT CRÉMANTD’ALSACE
AC, Alsace, France, Méthode Traditionnelle
(Cave de Hoen)
TASTING NOTE: Made using Pinot Blanc and
Pinot Auxerrois, this fine Alsatian fizz features
aromas of biscuits, binned apple and fresh
cream. Dry and expressive on the palate, this
bubbly also has a pleasing softness that makes
it an exceptional sipper, or serve it with richer
seafoods. (VINTAGES panel, Nov. 2009)
INNISKILLIN WINEMAKER’S SERIES
TWO VINEYARDS RIESLING 2008
VQA Niagara Peninsula
Enjoy this racy wonder with planked salmon or
grilled prawns.
TASTING NOTE: Straw-lime colour with an
aromatic bouquet of grapefruit and honey with a
floral grace note. Light to medium-bodied, off-dry
with a spicy (almost Gewurztraminer-like) flavour
of grapefruit and tangerine. Good tension between
sweetness and balancing acidity. Score: 89 (Tony
