USA – RED WINE
CALIFORNIA
BERINGER THIRD CENTURY
PINOT NOIR 2007
Central Coast
Beringer’s Third Century line marks the beginning
of their third century in business (they were
established in 1876). For this elegant Pinot Noir,
they use fruit sourced from Central Coast vineyards
because they feel this region mirrors the cool
climate of Burgundy. This wine exhibits aromas
and flavours of cherry, plum, earth and oak spice.
It is fruity, but ably balanced by fine-grained
tannins. Cellar it for 2+ years or serve it tonight
with a pork roast.
BOGLE VINEYARDS
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
California
TASTING NOTE: Here’s a stellar example of how
a really good Cabernet can be made without
gouging the consumer. This is a dry, elegant and
rich wine, with firm tannins housing flavors of
blackberries, currants, herbs, spices and smoky
cedar wood. It’s a terrific value. Score: 90 (Steve
Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast, Dec. 31, 2009)
CELLAR NO. 8 MERLOT 2007
California
(Asti Winery)
TASTING NOTE: Expressive Merlot with aromas
of plum, cherry, oak, nettle and mineral. Dry,
full bodied and fruity with ripe tannins bringing
balance. Still a wee bit tight, so it needs rare
steaks or even cellar it for a year or two. (VINTAGES
panel, April 2010)
DE LOACH PINOT NOIR 2008
California
A rich, deep California Pinot full of slightly chewy
dark berry and cherry fruit, with hints of cola,
Asian spices and forest floor adding complexity.
A great match for stuffed veal tenderloin or
planked salmon with fruit salsa.
JOSEPH PHELPS
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2006
Napa Valley
TASTING NOTE: Phelps’ basic Cabernet bottling
is dry and elegant and classically balanced. It
displays rich flavors of blackberries, black currants
and cedar, with notes of violets and herbs. Fancy
and impressive now, but not a longterm ager.
Through 2012. Score: 92 (Steve Heimoff, Wine
Enthusiast, Nov. 1, 2009)
Father’s Day
JOSEPH PHELPS INNISFREE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2007
Napa Valley
Here’s a gem from a producer with a first-rate
reputation for Cabernet. Grapes for this wine
come from the very same vineyards as Phelps’
more famous cult wine, Insignia, but from
younger vines. The Innisfree Cab is a forward
and approachable wine with aromas and flavours
of mulled spices, red fruit, coffee and cedar,
with a long, concentrated finish. The ten months
in a mix of French and American oak imbue it
with a slight smokiness, making it a fine match
for grilled red meats.
