ITALY – RED WINE CONT’D
PUGLIA
TAURINO SALICE SALENTINO
ROSSO RISERVA 2006
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Negroamaro and 15-20% Malvasia
Nera; it’s deep cherry ruby with black reflections
and cherry rim. The bouquet is fresh, with prune
berry fruit and some nutmeg mingled with prunes
and deft acidity that is fairly bright, and some
smoky underbrush. On the palate it’s bright, with
lively red berry fruit supported by bright berry fruit
acidity and by smooth sweet tannins that have a
slight burr, and flow into a clean fresh fairly tart
finish. It’s quite drinkable, and will drink very well
with succulent red meats or light stews … Well
worth seeking out. Score: 90-91 (Kyle Phillips,
www.italianfood.about.com, Undated)
SARDINIA
ARGIOLAS COSTERA 2007
DOC Cannonau di Sardegna
TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Costera is the finest of
these entry-level bottlings. A massive, generous
wine, it literally bursts onto the palate with waves
of game, earthiness, mint, spices, herbs and
bacon fat notes that swirl around a core of ripe,
dark fruit. There is outstanding harmony and
balance in the glass, especially at this price point.
Costera is 90% Cannonau, 5% Carignano and
5% Bovale Sardo, (all native varieties), that spent
roughly 6-8 months in French oak. Anticipated
maturity: 2008-2012. Score: 90 (Antonio Galloni,
www.erobertparker.com, Aug. 2008)
TUSCANY
CASTELLARE DI CASTELLINA
CHIANTI CLASSICO RISERVA 2006
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Plum and Indian spices, with a
floral bouquet. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft,
silky tannins and a rich finish. Balanced. Very
pretty indeed. Best after 2010. Score: 90 (James
Suckling, www.winespectator.com, Oct. 15, 2009)
PICCINI VILLA AL CORTILE BRUNELLO
DI MONTALCINO 2003
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Tenute Piccini is one of Chianti
Classico’s largest cellars, with over 250 hectares of
vines ... High marks went to Brunello di Montalcino
Villa Al Cortile ’03 with its generous nose and
powerful structure. Score: BBM (Gambero Rosso
Italian Wines, 2009)
ROCCA DELLE MACÌE
TENUTA SANT’ALFONSO
CHIANTI CLASSICO 2006
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: The Chianti Classico Tenuta
Sant’Alfonso ’06 also impressed, perfectly
reflecting the characteristics of the growing year
with an alcohol-rich nose of bottled fruit liqueur
and a rounded, mouthfilling, intense palate with
a heady finish. Score: BBM (Gambero Rosso
Italian Wines, 2009)
VIGNAMAGGIO TERRE DI PRENZANO
CHIANTI CLASSICO 2007
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: The cask-aged 2007 Chianti
Classico Terre di Prenzano is a soft, generous
Chianti with attractive red cherries, flowers and
spices. In 2007 the Terre di Prenzano is an
excellent value, as the wine is especially plump.
Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012. Score: 88
