PORTUGAL – RED WINE
CARDEAL RESERVA TOURIGA
NACIONAL 2007
DOC Dão
TASTING NOTE: Youthful, deep ruby in the glass,
this Silver Medal winner at the 2010 Concours
Mondial de Bruxelles is a fantastic value. Made
with the prime grape in neighbouring Porto,
this dry version has aromas of macerated berry,
licorice, sweet spice, red fruits and oak. The
dry, medium-bodied palate offers spicy red fruit
and toasty oak, and demonstrates great balance
between the fruit, medium tannins and acidity. The
finish is balanced with lovely fruit throughout. Enjoy
this with pork roast. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
CASA DE SANTAR RED 2007
DOC Dão
TASTING NOTE: This estate was originally
established in 1640, and has been in the same
family for 13 generations. The blend here is
primarily Touriga Nacional, sporting aromas of dark
berry and tobacco that continue on the palate
alongside juicy cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, red
licorice and delicate vanilla. A balanced, spicy
red with nice minerality and good length. A fine
partner for herb-roasted lamb or venison.
(VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
190710 (D) 750 mL $14.95 2
MESSIAS GRANDE ESCOLHA 2007
DOC Douro
TASTING NOTE: Beyond rich—certainly as far as
its alcohol is concerned—this is in fact a finely
balanced wine. The fruit is intensely ripe, sweet, but
it is delicious in the glass. The black berries are
like syrup, smooth and creamy. Pepper, nutmeg
and toast give added interest … Score: 88
SPAIN – RED WINE
BUIL & GINÉ GINÉ GINÉ 2007
DOCa Priorat
TASTING NOTE: Half of the fruit for this juicy
blend comes from young vines, half from old-vine
cariñena and garnacha. The fruit is delightfully
red, prettier and more accessible than what has
become typical in Priorat. There’s refinement to
the acidity that lends the wine its nerve. For roast
partridge. Score: 91 (Patricio Tapia, Wine &
Spirits, Oct. 2009)
067843 (XD) 750 mL $17.95 2
BURGO VIEJO
GRAN RESERVA 2000
DOCa Rioja
TASTING NOTE: An outstanding value for a Riojan
Gran Reserva. This wine has a finely aged floral
bouquet, and is brimming with spicy berry, fig,
raisin, dark chocolate, marzipan, and a touch
of leather. It’s medium to full bodied, with excellent
length. Delicious with linguini alfredo, or roasted
veal. (VINTAGES panel, April 2010)
CASA DE ILLANA
TRESDECINCO 2004
DO Ribera del Júcar
Jay Miller (from www.erobertparker.com) gave
this wine a score of 90 in February of 2009.
Although he recommended the wine, no tasting
note was provided. This is a blend of Syrah,
Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Look for fresh
berry aromas and flavours, with velvety tannins
for structure. Enjoy with rich lamb stews.
