THE INSIDE STORY
Perhaps no other whisky distillery in the world
is as fervently dedicated to tradition as Springbank.
Founded in 1828 on the site of an illicit still,
Springbank is the oldest family-owned distillery in
Scotland, producing handmade single malts
loved by whisky aficionados around the world. The
distillery malts its own barley using traditional
floor maltings – one of just a few operations in
Scotland using this painstaking method. Timehonoured
traditions aside, this is a whisky worth its
salt. Indeed, it boasts a subtle salty character that
intensifies as the spirit ages, accenting the myriad
flavours within (much the way table salt heightens
the flavours in foods). This Springbank hallmark
comes courtesy of the distillery’s coastal location
near Argyll, which means strong winds that blow
damp sea air into the draughty warehouses. Way
back in 1838, Johnnie Walker bought whisky from
Springbank to create his now-famous blends;
when we discovered this one a century and a half
later, we liked it too – so much so that we followed
his lead and put it on our shelves.
GOOD TASTE
A new favourite with Springbank whisky fans,
this 12-year-old is one of the most complex of all
malt whiskies. It’s golden-straw coloured, and
has oak influences, with aromas of grass, hay, leather,
tar and a faint peatiness. Full bodied, with
sweet, rounded flavours and hints of licorice, bitter
oranges, pine resin and cinchona (a tree with
medicinal bark that yields quinine). The finish is
long and rich, with a hint of smoke.
SERVE IT UP
Bottled at cask strength, this whisky is designed
for the addition of pure water to suit individual
taste; the added water will also coax out notes of
black tea and cinnamon. Purists might enjoy
it neat.
