AUSTRALIA – RED WINE CONT’D
WESTEND ESTATE COOL CLIMATE
SERIES PINOT NOIR 2009
Tumbarumba, New South Wales
TASTING NOTE: ... The 2009 ‘Cool Climate’ Pinot
is sourced from Tumbarumba and is light- to
medium-bodied, has rich, intense and persistent
redcurrant and black cherry flavours, silky smooth
viscosity and ripe, fine-grained tannins. I have a
slight question mark over the tannins but that didn’t
stop me quietly sipping the wine ... Bloody good.
NEW ZEALAND – WHITE WINE
BLIND RIVER SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009
Marlborough, South Island
Gold Medal, 2010 Sydney International Wine
Competition. Wines in this competition must also
show successfully with a dish, in this case Goat
Cheese Roulade (www.top100wines.com).
TASTING NOTE: Cut grass and tropical aromas
succumb to passion fruit and guava flavours
that have good weight and intensity. They are
perfectly in balance with the citrus zest acidity
and that makes this a bold, vibrant and distinctive
sauvignon. Enjoy. Top Tip. Score: HHHHJ
RAPAURA SPRINGS RED GATE
SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009
Marlborough, South Island
TASTING NOTE: One of the great things about
New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is that is it just so
immediately identifiable – one sniff and you’re in
Marlborough country. Luscious notes of gooseberry,
tropical fruit, nettles, grasses and that distinct
vegetal quality of asparagus. Dry, with an intensely
zippy acidity. This is a great value. Pair with grilled
or seared scallops. (VINTAGES panel, Jan. 2010)
