ITALY – RED WINE
ABRUZZO
TENUTA ULISSE UNICO
MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO 2009
DOC
The respected wine guide Gambero Rosso
awarded this wine BBM in the 2011 edition.
TASTING NOTE: Inky, opaque ruby. Deep, heady
aromas of smoked meat, mocha, plum, fig, and
tilled earth. Medium-full bodied and dry, with nice
balance between ripe, round fruit and fleshy
tannins. Mouthfilling, medium-long finish. Savour
this wine now with grilled lamb, or cellar for
2-3 years. (VINTAGES panel, June 2011)
CAMPANIA
TERREDORA LACRYMA CHRISTI DEL
VESUVIO ROSSO 2008
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Terredora is firing on all cylinders
these days. Virtually all of the wines I have tasted
recently have been superb. The 2008 Lacryma
Christi is 100% Piedirosso, one of Campania’s indigenous
grapes, that spends eight months in
French oak. This pedigreed red makes an impression
with its bold wild cherries, smoke, ash,
licorice, cracked black pepper and leather, all
nuances that are typical of Piedirosso. Anticipated
maturity: 2010-2014. Score: 90 (Antonio Galloni,
erobertparker.com, Aug. 2010)
PIEDMONT
CASETTA BAROLO 2005
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Deep garnet in the glass with
ripe black fruit, earth, and plum notes with subtle
hints of smoke and spice on the nose. The palate
is dry, with moderate well-incorporated tannins, and
is very nicely structured. Wonderful complexity to
the red and dark fruit, with light spice adding to the
overall depth. Try with grilled lamb or a mushroom
risotto. (VINTAGES panel, July 2010)
004523 (XD) 750 mL $24.95 2
PUGLIA
DE FALCO SERRE DI SANT’ELIA
SQUINZANO 2007
DOC
TASTING NOTE: Opaque ruby in the glass with
aromas of dried herbs, plum, cranberry, earth,
smoke and leather. The palate is dry and medium
bodied with moderate tannins, notes of plum,
spice and dried cherry, with a tangy mid-palate
and finish. Great with braised meats, grilled steaks
or aged cheeses. (VINTAGES panel, Sept. 2010)
224659 (XD) 750 mL $16.95 2
GIORDANO RICARICO 2008
IGT Salento
TASTING NOTE: Aromas of chocolate mingle delectably
with spice, and red berry tones. Full bodied,
dry and very New World in style, the palate is spicy
and fresh with lovely soft raspberry character and
a balanced finish. Try with a traditional tomato and
meat pasta, or spice things up and try it with chili.
