IT is hard to summarise 

in a few paragraphs the 

trip to Papua New Guinea 

last month with the 

Dolphins. 

This was my first trip to our 

nearest neighbour and it was 

really enjoyable. Some people 

raise the prospect of crime 

and poverty, however we 

never felt threatened and the 

people we met were happy 

and friendly. 

Our base at Kokopo was 

really nice and the entire 

district is very beautiful, 

although we visited Rabaul, 

which is 20 minutes away, 

and there are still visible signs 

of the catastrophe from its 

volcano, one of the world’s 

most active. 

Rabaul was virtually 

destroyed in 1994 by the 

Tavurvur volcano and there 

was a major eruption even last 

year. 

Our match against the 

Hunters drew a full house of 

about 6000 and the organisers 

could not have fitted anyone 

else in. 

We played very well, 

particularly early in the 

match, but a few mistakes 

allowed the home side back 

into the encounter. 

Once the crowd sensed the 

tide was turning they spurred 

the Hunters on and they 

certainly have some points in 

them. How they handle away 

trips will determine their 

season. 

We were quite physical in 

our approach to the fixture 

however the fundamentals let 

us down at vital times. 

We’re not quite where we 

want to be on the table, 

however Troy is doing a great 

job. He has the players fit and 

muscling up in defence. 

The Intrust Super Cup 

certainly keeps improving in 

standard and we are allowing 

a few errors to let us down at 

crunch times. I would say 

there have been three or four 

matches that swung on a 

critical decision or mistake 

that have not gone our way.

I COULD not pass up this 

opportunity to praise the 

decision of Petero 

Civoniceva to help us out 

this season. 

After finishing his rep 

career in a blaze of glory at 

the World and Pacific Cups, 

Petero would be forgiven 

for putting his big feet up. 

But he answered an SOS 

to arms and so far has 

turned out in two fixtures. I 

thought he played well 

against Burleigh in our 

victory there in late May 

and then he came off the 

bench for us against Souths 

Magpies late last month. 

He will be available to 

play for us in between his 

league ambassador role and 

business and family 

commitments. It’s great 

that he is able to maintain 

his link with our club and 

I’m certain all our playing 

and coaching staff relish 

learning from the great 

man.

BACK from the early days 

of the Leagues Club at 

Dolphin Oval, many members 

would remember Jim 

Hutchings. 

I ran into Jim at Bracken 

Ridge several weeks ago and 

it was great to catch up. A 

very popular staff member, 

Jim was a long-time bar 

manager and top all-round 

club servant who also kicked 

off the Gumtree Bottleshop 

for us before retiring. 

He has faced a few 

challenges of late, however he 

still maintains that cheery 

disposition that made him so 

popular with members and 

staff.

ATTENDING junior 

football matches always 

seems to bring you in 

contact with old friends and 

acquaintances. 

This was the case last 

month when I ran into Jim 

Husband, an old Redcliffe 

junior stalwart whose son 

Brad played for the 

Dolphins and who now has 

three grandsons turning out 

in the red and white while 

Brad is coaching a team. 

With so many matches to 

cover on a weekend, Jim is 

back on the junior 

roundabout ferrying 

grandchildren around. It’s 

great to see another 

generation become involved 

in our great club and many 

family links to the Dolphins 

continue. 

Other familiar faces were 

Col Richardson, who has a 

grandson playing, and Glen 

Carter, a former junior 

coach whose sons played for 

us and who now has a 

grandson turning out with 

us.

Stadium benefits flow to community 

OUR ongoing push for the boutique stadium at Dolphin Oval has thrown up 

several questions about what benefits result from such a community 

investment. 

The situation arose after we knocked back 

several opportunities to host big games at 

Dolphin Oval over the past four years. 

We were offered the State of Origin under 

20s match, however our field lighting was 

nowhere near the standard for television 

coverage via Fox Sports. 

The 2013 Queensland Cup grand final went 

to Ipswich as we were constructing Dolphins 

Central at the time. The NRL trial this year 

caught us by surprise, with a capacity crowd 

watching the Broncos and Cowboys start their 

respective seasons. 

Our investigation led us to Mudgee and 

Coffs Harbour in New South Wales. Take 

Mudgee for example. 

“Country and suburban grounds traditionally 

are best measured by the number of cartons 

sold on Sunday afternoon,” said Mayor Des 

Kennedy. 

“But in Mudgee, it’s different now. Out 

here, games of footy can make us millions. 

Knowing that only last year this battling little 

league town opened a footy complex, costing 

$10 million to complete, is now the premier 

sporting ground in western New South Wales. 

“And for proof, consider that in the 18 

months since the ribbon was cut, Mudgee has 

hosted a City-Country game, an NRL match, 

even state titles for soccer, rugby union and 

touch.” 

“And according to extensive research, every 

visitor to those events brings $381,” said Julie 

Robertson, economic development officer at 

Mudgee Council. 

“You look at this year’s NRL game between 

Parramatta and the Gold Coast. Half the 10,000

crowd were visitors to the region. That means 

about $1.9 million was invested into Mudgee. 

“And that’s just one of the events people 

know about too. We host junior soccer titles 

here where 20 teams, each with squads of 

about 20 players, stay in town for four days. 

Throw in their parents, family, friends and so 

on, the injection into the local community is 

incredible.” 

At this point it should be noted Mudgee’s 

new complex, $5 million of which was paid for 

by the former Rudd Labor government, is not 

on the same site as Mudgee’s old league 

ground.

venue isn’t booked,” Ms Robertson said. “In

Championships for rugby, then in April a 

Trans-Tasman touch football event. 

“Our next step is to extend the number of 

fields we have, which is currently about a 

dozen, to 20 so we can host the biggest sports 

carnivals too.” 

So professionally is the Mudgee complex 

run, the council has been asked by other towns 

in western New South Wales to explain exactly 

how it has done it. 

“We made a decision that was in the best 

interests of Mudgee,” Mayor Kennedy said. 

“And while the Government funded us well, 

we still had to find $5 million, which some 

locals think should go towards better roads, 

more library books and so on. 

“But this ground, it has put Mudgee on the 

map as a major sports venue. We still have to 

work hard to drive it. 

“You can’t just build something and expect 

people to turn up. But this is a ground that, for 

the next 50 years, is going to make money for 

this town.” 

Wayne Miller, a Coffs Harbour resident 

before moving to Queensland in the early 

1990s, contacted his old council and posed 

several questions to the council’s events and 

local sports coordinator. Here is what they had 

to say. 

What was the average spend per person, 

per day while in town? What was the total 

value per visitor? 

“The average spend per overnight visitor per 

day is $156 as per destination NSW.” 

What is the average length of stay per 

sporting event? 

“This varies depending on the length of each 

event. We find that players and their families 

will stay one extra night than the length of the 

event as they prefer to arrive the night prior to 

their event. Our exact average stays per event 

in 2012-2013 financial year is 0.3 nights per 

person. However for a multiday event the

Do event participants and their families 

return for a holiday or short visit? 

“Our visitor information centre might be 

able to help you with this.” 

We contacted the visitor information centre 

and they were unable to put an exact figure on 

this. However they did say that a large 

percentage of participants and supporters 

stated that they would love to return in the 

future. 

How many carnivals are held at the 

stadium each year? 

“ C.ex Coffs Harbour International Stadium 

is a multi-purpose outdoor stadium which 

caters for a wide range of sporting and 

entertainment events. Based on our 2013-2014 

financial year calendar, to date we have hosted 

18 athletics carnivals, 12 rugby league events, 

eight rugby union events, 10 soccer events and 

eight entertainment-based events. 

“While the National Touch League always 

produces outstanding action, this year’s titles 

will have added intensity when the competition 

begins at C.ex Coffs International Stadium. 

Not only are national championships up for 

grabs, but many Australian players will be 

looking beyond their team’s conquests to 

impress the Touch Football Australia High 

Performance Program, as Coffs Harbour is set 

to host the FIT Touch World Cup in 12 months. 

About 3000 players, officials, families and 

fans are expected to descend on Coffs Harbour, 

and when the first game taps off at 8am, it will 

be the first of 473 played at the stadium over 

four days of national competition. “ 

At the end of the week the council does the 

maths with 3000 people spending $156 per day 

over four days, injecting $1.872 million into 

the local economy. 

It is a no brainer if you ask me. More stadium

Dolphins Masters 

show strong form 

THE Redcliffe Dolphins Masters team has been performing well, 

training on Mondays and travelling around the south-east corner 

to games which are held every three weeks. 

Dolphin Oval will host two of the next three fixtures, on in 

July and one in August. Home games will be used to raise funds 

for the team, which is looking to organise new playing jerseys 

and team kits ahead of upcoming national carnivals. 

The Masters team will participate in the Gold Coast 

International Tournament in September. 

A total of 64 teams will travel from around Australia and New 

Zealand to compete across 10 days at the Gold Coast 

tournament, which starts on Saturday, September 27. 

The Australian and New Zealand Masters Test sides will be 

selected from competing teams and officially named on 

Wednesday, October 1. 

The two Test sides will then play against each other on the 

final weekend of the tournament in an international play-off 

where we hope to see Redcliffe players picked to represent. 

The Gold Coast tournament will be a great warm-up to the 

Pan Pacific Masters Games also held on the Gold Coast from 

November 6-9. 

Play-off games for the gold, silver and bronze medals will be 

on November 9, where again we hope that Redcliffe features on 

the medal tally board.

Cause for celebration with Dolphins 

THE Redcliffe District Rugby League 

Football Club was recently 

announced as one of the successful 

organisations to apply to be an Our 

Village 101 Causes. 

The purpose of the 101 Causes program is 

to raise funds for organisations and strengthen 

profiles of community groups within the 

Moreton Bay Regional Council. 

Run by the Our Village Foundation, a notfor-profit 

organisation that aims to benefit the 

MBRC via a network of businesses, likeminded 

individuals, government and 

community-based organisations, the programs 

starts on July 1 and finishes on June 30 next 

year. 

During the next 12 months, the Redcliffe 

Dolphins will participate in fundraising 

platforms coordinated by Our Village and the 

101 Causes platform which will also assist the 

Dolphins by promoting our club, our events 

and fundraisers around the region. 

Staff are currently in the planning process 

to set clear goals and objectives for the year 

ahead which they hope to lead to raising 

more money for future projects for the 

juniors. 

101 Causes provides the Dolphins with a 

cause manager to offer professional assistance 

and advice to put the club’s plan into place. 

This will assist in creating a tailored 

partnership with the Dolphins and Our Village 

Foundation that starts with a 101 Causes 

webpage for supporters to nominate the 

Dolphins as their preferred organisation to 

support. 

The first incentive-based program the 

Dolphins will participate in is the upcoming 

2014 Redcliffe Festival, which is coordinated 

by the Our Village Foundation. 

The festival will operate at two different 

locations on the Peninsula and in order to 

deliver such a huge program will primarily be 

run by a volunteer workforce. 

Volunteers are now being called for to 

nominate themselves to work at the event in 

a variety of different areas ranging from admin 

work, food prep, customer service, marketing, 

setting up and pack down right through to the 

clean-up after the event is all wrapped up. 

The 2014 Redcliffe Festival will run across 

the September weekend of Friday 5th to 

Sunday 7th with: 

• Spring Break Beach Party – an under-age 

music concert at Pelican Park 

• Kite Fest Live – an Aussie rock concert at 

Pelican Park 

• Redcliffe Kite Fest – fly your kite at Pelican 

Park amidst the family-oriented celebrations 

including rides, cooking displays, animal farms, 

aerobatic displays and more 

• The Jetty Fiesta – Brazilian/Latin street 

performances, stage-based entertainment and 

a huge fireworks display with twilight markets 

and laser light installations 

• Historic First Settlement celebrations via 

Redcliffe Remembers on the Sunday 

Incentives for event volunteers include a 

Redcliffe Festival T-shirt, cap, certificate of 

appreciation, food and beverage while working 

(on the Festival weekend) and voucher 

booklet. 

In addition to these individual perks,

In a tribute to the 2014 sponsors of the 

Dolphins juniors, players, along with their 

team coach and manager, will march at 

the Intrust Super Cup home game against 

Mackay Cutters. 

The event has been held each year for 

as long as any of the current staff can 

remember. 

Junior development manager Steve 

Peoples said: “There is always the 

excitement over which teams get to sit in 

the Village Motors utes that lead out the 

parade. 

Our Cause. Volunteers nominating themselves 

to volunteer under the 101 Cause banner 

simply nominate the Redcliffe DRLFC as their

Redcliffe Leagues Club Reception to be 

passed onto football club staff.

in leaps and bounds 

UNLIKE most of the touring party 

to Papua New Guinea last 

month, I had been to our nearest 

neighbor before. 

I played with Redcliffe sides that took 

on the Port Moresby Vipers team in the 

then Queensland Cup in 1996-97. 

I could not believe the improvement in 

so many areas since I was left there. 

Infrastructure throughout has gone ahead 

ten-fold while much of Port Moresby has 

changed from tin sheds into a modern 

city. 

Kokopo is the capital of East New 

Britain Province, a 90-minute flight from 

Port Moresby and is more of a resort 

town than a city. 

The facilities were adequate and the 

hospitality fantastic, but we were there on 

a mission. We put in a good physical first 

half, however our second 40 minutes was 

not up to that standard and we made too 

many errors. 

Although we had a sizeable lead, once 

the local side got a sniff of a comeback 

they came at us with the crowd right 

behind them.

WHAT a pity that Petero 

Civoniceva could not make the trip 

to PNG. 

Petero is a national hero there, 

especially after his many visits as an 

ambassador for our code. 

We are happy to work in with his 

schedule and he already has turned 

out against Burleigh and again late 

last month against Souths. 

I was quite happy with his outing 

against the Bears. He holds that 

middle section of the park intact and 

even managed to pop up a few 

passes.

rolled around again. 

And so far the Redcliffe Dolphins have 

snared more than their fair share. 

A total of four Dolphins are in the 

18-man Queensland Rangers team to take 

on NSW Country at Rockhampton’s 

Browne Park on July 12. 

Our reps are winger Brett Coutts, prop 

Caleb Hoffmann and interchange forwards 

James Crombie and Paul Ivan. They were 

selected from last month’s state carnival at 

Owen Park. 

Congratulations also have to go to four 

young Dolphins who will wear the 

Queensland jersey this month. 

Sam Leach, Josh Kerr, Nathan Watts and 

Jeremy Skelton will fly the Maroon flag 

against NSW Country at Rocky on the 

same day. 

All four played in the Dolphins Mal 

Meninga Cup side earlier this season 

before joining Brendan Lam’s Colts squad 

following the completion of that 

competition. 

For Nathan, it is the second time he has 

been selected in the side after coming off 

the bench in the corresponding match in 

Lismore last year.

plan. We are only thinking about our job next 

week but if we’re good enough we’ll be there

One though who does stand out is 

Aaron Whitchurch, who has probably 

been the pick of our squad all season. 

His pace and size, as well as 

experience at the NRL level, makes 

him an ideal selection, even if it 

might be off the bench. 

Aaron can not only handle the 

centre and wing roles, he is big 

enough to fit into the backrow. 

Our fans know that if we can string 

a few wins together we will zoom up 

what is a congested table. We might 

be lingering near the bottom but 

we’re not too many points away from 

a semi-final berth and it’s crucial 

that we are playing our best football 

towards the end of the season.

A FAMILIAR face popped up against us 

when we played Sunshine Coast. 

Tom Murphy has returned from a short 

stint with the Canterbury Bulldogs and 

found a spot with his home team the 

Falcons. 

Always fit, he was short of a run against 

us after injury curtailed his time with the 

Dogs. I’m sure we will see more of him in 

the seasons to come.

attack, muscle up in defence and improve our 

line speed.

Reunion for schoolboys 

BETWEEN 1960 (the inaugural 

year) and 2001, more than 700 

boys represented Redcliffe in 

the Vic Jensen Cup competition. 

For many of these years, 

selection in this team was the 

greatest achievement a 

Redcliffe primary schoolboy 

player could attain in rugby 

league, unless gaining state 

representation. Originally a six 

stone competition, it then 

became a 50kg one and for the 

final 11 years an open 

competition. 

Sadly this competition 

ended in 2001 with a change of 

focus on inter-school sport, 

fewer male teachers and the 

ever present threat of litigation, 

among contributing factors. 

If you are a past rep player, 

coach, manager or one of the 

tireless volunteers needed to 

prepare teams and host 

carnivals, you are invited to

Con bolsters ranks 

NEW Redcliffe second-rower Con Mika 

has had little chance to settle in. 

After one match in FOGS A grade 

which included nailing a try, Mika found 

himself in the top side for the away trip to 

Papua New Guinea. 

“Con went really well for us in PNG and 

just needs time to run into condition,” 

Dolphins coach Troy Lindsay said. 

“Con played a dozen matches for the 

Knights in the NRL and then had two years 

in the English Super League before 

returning to New Zealand. 

“This season he was in Gladstone 

working and was playing with the local 

side. We got tipped off through Kristian 

Wolff about him and I spoke to Bluey 

Southern, who said he was way too good 

for the local competition up there.” 

Mika, 24, spent two seasons with Hull 

KR, which included a Challenge Cup semifinal 

against Wigan. 

Devastating in defence with his big hits 

at times, the Tongan can also be a 

formidable force with the ball in hand, with 

reward coming through an Exiles call-up. 

Mika, who joined the Dolphins last week 

on the recommendation of former North 

Queensland Cowboy Southern, caught 

Lindsay’s eye in the FOGS Cup match. 

“Con was pretty good in FOGS and we 

had some good reports on him from 

people we know are pretty good judges of 

footballers,” Lindsay said.

who they were barracking for. 

PNG trip will stay in memories 

THE trip started early Friday 

morning when the squad jumped 

on a bus to the airport from the 

Leagues Club at 6am. 

After breakfast at the airport and a bit of 

duty-free shopping, the travelling party, 

which included Moreton Bay Regional 

Council Mayor Allan Sutherland and Cr 

James Houghton, headed off to Port 

Moresby. 

We had a two-hour stopover in Port 

Moresby, having a bite to eat before boarding 

the connecting flight to Rabaul. 

From the airport the squad boarded a 

bus and headed straight to Kalabond Oval in 

Kokopo for a light training session. 

On our way to the ground our bus passed 

a number of locals, each of them with a 

broad smile on their face and a wave for us. 

As we arrived at the ground there were 

a dozen or so children running barefoot 

beside our bus all the way to the ground 

entrance where security were waiting. 

We watched the local side the Agmark 

Gurias wrap up their preparation for the 

weekend before having a session of our own 

in front of about 100 locals. 

After training we headed to our 

accommodation for our stay at Kokopo 

Beach Bungalow Resort, not really knowing 

what to expect. 

We checked in and headed for dinner 

THE Village Motors Dolphins last 

month travelled to Kokopo in the 

Papua New Guinea province of New 

East Britain for the round 15 clash 

with the Hunters. It was a weekend 

that will stick with the young 

Dolphins squad for a very long time. 

where we were greeted by friendly staff 

who left no stone unturned to ensure we 

were well looked after - as we would find 

out time and time again over our short stay. 

Our players will remember the people 

more than anything else. 

Day 2 

A group of 28 players and staff made the 

trip on Saturday morning to the East New 

Britain markets. 

Locals meet in this central location to 

sell hand-made handicrafts and fresh 

produce. The market vendors were not 

pushy and seemed to have very little interest 

in selling us their products as long as we 

stopped for handshakes or to simply say 

hello. 

While the players were at the markets, 

the rest of the travelling party headed out 

to have a look at the Tavurvur and Vulcan 

volcanos. 

It was an unusual game-day preparation 

for the side. Again, the hospitality of the staff 

at Kokopo Beach Bungalows came to the 

fore as they allowed us to take over the 

hotel function room and create a makeshift 

dressing room. 

The bus trip to the ground was also 

unusual as we travelled in full playing kit as 

there are no dressing shed facilities at 

Kalabond Oval. It was straight from the bus 

to the field for warm-up. 

The game didn’t go as we wanted it to 

and unfortunately we came out on the 

wrong side on the scoreboard. 

Immediately after the match on field the 

players met a group of local rugby leaguemad 

school kids who made our boys feel 

like NRL stars. 

You couldn’t wipe the smiles off the shy 

locals’ faces at times when they were each 

given a Dolphins cap and the chance to 

meet our players. 

A few of our players even gave their 

boots to junior players after the match and 

for the kids it was like they won the lotto 

they were so happy. 

After the game it was back to the resort 

where the players mixed with the locals 

before hitting the road at 5am on Sunday for 

the trip home. 

We can’t thank the staff at Kokopo Beach 

Bungalows enough for how they treated us 

during our stay, even going to the extent of 

washing our playing kit. 

Day 3 

On our way back to Australia we had 

another stopover in Port Moresby, but this 

time instead of staying around the airport 

we travelled to the war cemetery. 

What a truly special place this is with a 

number of our party being visibly moved. It 

didn’t go unnoticed that a number of the 

fallen were on unmarked graves or were the 

same age if not younger than the players in 

our team. It was a very humbling experience 

that put a lot of things into perspective for 

our group. After spending time at the 

cemetery we headed to the Holiday Inn for 

a bite to eat before boarding the plane for 

the return trip to Brisbane. 

Despite not winning the match – our 

main objective – the whole experience was 

very rewarding for our travelling party. 

For the majority of our players they have 

said the trip was the best life experience 

that they have received through rugby 

league. 

To all the people we crossed paths with 

in Papua New Guinea, all we can do is say 

thank you for welcoming us into your 

community albeit for only a short time. 

They are very enthusiastic about life in 

general and fully appreciate all the little 

things in life that we take for granted. It was 

a trip that most of us won’t forget in a hurry 

if at all.

Highest accolade 

for Pilates studio 

WITH the launch of the new studio at the Dolphins Health Precinct on June 21, 

many locals were able to try out the new classes on offer in this unique 

fitness studio, including Kat Gilpin, who shared her experience on her blog:

“I have tried many fitness classes and 

activities and love to give anything new a go! 

My local gym, the Dolphins Health 

Precinct, has opened a new Pilates studio with 

Barre classes, which I have wanted to try for a 

long time. The new Pilates studio is called 

Balance Pilates Mind & Body Studio. 

I signed up for a trial class of Purely Barre 

and was excited all week. I had always 

imagined it being a mix of ballet with Pilates 

with a focus on core strength. 

I did ballet as a child and teenager and 

always enjoyed it. I have tried a couple 

different adult ballet classes but never really 

enjoyed them as I have no intention of 

becoming a ballerina and felt like I was trying 

to relive my youth. 

I really enjoy Pilates classes at DHP and the 

instructors are outstanding. Even in a large 

class they go out of their way to ensure they 

correct individual’s technique and that every 

student is getting the most out of the class. 

With these instructors, a touch of ballet and a 

massive core and leg workout, how could I 

not be excited. 

The new Pilates studio is gorgeous. It’s 

upstairs and has large windows, which was 

beautiful on a winter’s morning. The class 

started with a warm-up away from the barre, 

which was focused on posture and breathing. 

The instructor was fun and you could tell 

she had really been looking forward to sharing 

the class that she had designed. 

After the warm-up we moved on to the 

barres. The music was modern and included 

great tracks like Justin Timberlake, I’m 

Bringing Sexy Back. 

The trial class was a modified, shorter class 

but we still managed to work our legs, arms, 

abs and buttocks. There was one particular 

lunge track that had my legs burning like fire. 

Overall, I really enjoyed the class. The 45 

minutes flew by, and while parts of it were 

tough and there is a lot of room for 

improvement from me, it’s definitely a class 

for all levels of Pilates experience. 

I am planning to do floor Pilates once a 

week and Purely Barre once a week, on-going. 

I’m so glad that something is finally close to 

home that I really enjoy.”

This activity is in the form of a three hour mini 

workshop for employees and students being held 

one Saturday afternoon per month. The Mental 

Health Social Support (MHSS) was developed to 

better assist the community in times of need (as 

would a first aid course) by learning the skills 

offered. 

The purpose of this workshop is to help prepare 

participants in being able to identify and affectively 

offer support to those at risk of a mental health 

problem and make the appropriate referral.

THE Redcliffe Leagues Club has a history 

going back more than a decade of staging 

karaoke talent nights. 

The club has reintroduced this fabulous 

entertainment with the Voice Your Talent 

format starting this month. 

Held on Tuesday evenings from 6 o’clock, 

the competition offers free entry and an 

overall first prize of $1000, runner-up $500 

and third prize of $200.
