BRIEF ENGLISH SUMMARY.
This master thesis is the documentation of a 10th semester master dissertation from
Department of Production at Aalborg University. The main subject of the project is the
effectiveness and efficiency in the construction industry, in regards to both the
processes and the products of the industry. The supervisors of the project are
Associate Professor Erik Bejder PhD and PhD. Student Randi Muff Ebbesen.
Setting the Scene
The construction industry is not capable of reaching the same level of effectiveness
and efficiency compared to other industries, in particular to the manufacturing
industry. In the effort to level out this lack in effectiveness and efficiency construction
industry often gets inspiration from the manufacturing industry.
In addition to this the customer is increasingly in focus, resulting in an enhanced focus
on values. This is done to create the level of values that fulfill the customer’s wishes
and requirements.
Problem formulation
These two overall areas are the motivation for the research question:
Initial analysis:
How can the effectiveness and efficiency be improved in the
construction industry, if the building process is seen in a holistic
view, in order to increase value generation for the costumer but
also for the remaining partners in the construction industry?
To answer the research question it is necessary to understand and analyze the present
construction process and let the practitioners comment on the problems and
improvement possibilities they perceive in the present construction process.
Throughout the workshops the different partners called their attention to several
problems. The primary problems that appeared during the different workshops
included:
- Missing focus on the client.
- Missing confidence, respect, and answer in the line of business.
- Missing involvement of participants in the initial phases of a project
- Insufficient management of the process
Solution: ”The ideal building process”
To deal with these areas an industrial point if view combined with general
organizational theory is applied to derive a new version of the constriction process:
“The ideal construction process”. This process is created in such a manner that the
partners are involved early to create an increased understanding of the whole project.
Furthermore, to attain the right qualifications at the right time and to create an
increased feeling of ownership for the project. The model is also including the
development, in the virtual enterprise, on an organizational level and with the jobs the
different partners are handling in each phase.
