Abstract Abstract 4 Background Of the thirteen tendons, which cross the ankle joint, the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) is especially known to give the greatest trouble in classical ballet dancers. FHL tendinitis is so common in the world of ballet, that it is known as ”dancer’s tendinitis”. Although cases have been reported in sports, it is much more prevalent in ballet dancers. The purpose The purpose of this project is to explain what according to the literature causes professionally classical ballet dancers to develop FHL tendinitis and what is being done by physical therapists to prevent this injury. Data collection The study is based on literature and 13 interviews conducted with physical therapists employed by classical ballet companies. Conclusion This project has demonstrated that physical therapists use several interventions to prevent FHL tendinitis in classical ballet dancers, according to the different mechanisms that causes it. Discussion Since no research has been documented on the incidence of FHL tendinitis in ballet dancers, it would be interesting to conduct a quantitative survey to further document this injury. To achieve a reduction of FHL tendinitis in the future, it is important to teach the ballet students the proper use of their body. It is also important that the professional dancers most include additional strength training in their daily ballet classes.
