TRUCTUReS COMPRISING these features are<br />
normally categorized as special structures.<br />
The design of special structures accompanies the<br />
advanced IT technology which has been developed<br />
during the past 20 years and the very innovative<br />
programs available for performing Finite<br />
element Analyses (FeM). This is indispensable<br />
when designing bridges and engines as well as in<br />
the design of offshore structures, wind farms etc.<br />
Many of the tasks performed by <strong>ISC</strong> lie specifically<br />
within the field categorized as special structures<br />
i.e. bridge building, construction, the power<br />
sector, the off-shore sector and the wind farm<br />
sector.<br />
The contents of the tasks span widely, both when<br />
it is a matter of the structures’ sizes, the mechanical<br />
variations and in the choice of materials.<br />
The main qualifications needed in order to carry<br />
out the special structure designs are primarily<br />
that the expertise and know-how is present but<br />
obviously also that the tools which in a manageable<br />
way can handle the documentation of the<br />
structures according to the current available<br />
standards are available.<br />
The creativity of the architects’ minds often results<br />
in special structures and it is the elements<br />
in the structures that provide interesting challenges<br />
to the engineer while handling the assignment.<br />
The processing of many of these spatial structures<br />
of various kinds we see nowadays would<br />
not be possible without help from the available<br />
modern IT technology. One might find that exactly<br />
this has been essential for the design of many<br />
of the extremely creative structures we have<br />
seen erected during the recent years.<br />
<strong>ISC</strong> has been fortunate to be a player in this field<br />
and has several special structures and solutions<br />
for these lined up on the drawing board. This applies<br />
for the off-shore jacket structures, extreme<br />
piping structures, various engine foundations,<br />
mounting tools for suspension bridges, special<br />
bearings for swing bridges, mounting equipment<br />
for wind farm parks, foundations for extreme<br />
deep waters, the design of one of the largest<br />
bridges in Sweden, the Sundsvall Bridge among<br />
others.<br />
The design of the largest european swing bridge<br />
namely the Odin’s Bridge requires a special new<br />
bearing system which is able to handle the demands<br />
of the opening frequency and static loads.<br />
The Sundsvall Bridge also provides extraordinary<br />
geometrical and static challenges which are only<br />
solvable with the help of the modern IT software<br />
due to the increasing complex demands of lifetime<br />
estimates, oscillation calculations etc.<br />
