Reichskanzlei's garage until the end of WWII, and after the war it was sent to the USSR as
war booty. Another story says that it was shipped to Iran through the USSR, but because of
someone's negligence it stayed in the USSR until July 22nd 1941 (when Germany declared
war to the USSR). After that, its delivery of course was stopped, and the car stayed in
Moscow for the rest of the war time.
You can choose whichever story suits you better yourself, but the “hero of our story” appears
in Moscow in the middle of the 1960’s for sale in a “consignment store”, in its factory white
color. With the new owner, the car disappears for a restoration and resurfaces at the end of
the Sixties, this time in black. At that time, people probably considered that such a big
imposing car should for sure sport a black color. Only 10 years later, thanks to its description
in the “Oswald”- book, this car was repainted in its original white color.
After that this Mercedes changed owner again, and in 1988 was sold by the well-known
wheeler-dealer Paul Karassik to the United States. There it was restored again, and
subsequently repainted in dark cherry-brown with brown interior, for whatever reason...
Another famous story says that this car belonged to the famous soviet theatre and film actor
Andrey Alexandrovich Mironov, and subsequently was sold by his widow abroad. There is
however no firm evidence to this story and it is likely no more than a legend.
After long self-doubts and consultations it was decided to create the 1:43 scale model in all 3
colors to reflect its full life-cycle. The model is quite complicated: 17 jewel-like details, 15
lathe details, 17 details from profile wire, each device on instrument panel is done
independently. Overall there are about 250 pieces to the model.
To produce this model, EMC developed a new wheels building technology, with resin wheel
covers and tires, which are a 100% copy of the original ones. If you look inside you will see
black seats with white piping: that trim was manually painted by a female painter. Production
of the model suffered from some delays just because we wanted to get as much information
as possible, and create a 100% original and accurate model.
We'd like to thank those people who helped in gathering all the information and without
whom the making of this model would not have been possible: Alexander Golovin (Moscow),
Andrey Laguzov (Yaroslavl) and James Wyden (USA). Thanks to these people we managed
to find one of the last owners of the car in the USSR, people who saw this car in various
years, lots of material on the restoration in the USA and the current status of the car. A lot of
unique non published photos from private archives.
