Agenda
The Transparent Economy: Six
tigers stalk the global recovery –
and how to tame them
The report presents trends that
will drive or constrain greater
transparency and accountability.
That need to rebuild trust after the
financial crisis and the apparent
reorientation towards a sustainable
economy is being translated to
calls for unprecedented levels of
transparency. Within this context, The
Transparent Economy explores how
sustainability reporting, boosted by
technology and the changing roles of
top executives in organizations can
help to deliver the information needed
for a transparent and sustainable
economy. Recommendations are made
for business, financial institutions,
governments and individuals. The
Transparent Economy summarizes
six challenges, nicknamed “TIGERS”,
to which reporting and the reporting
landscape need to respond. These
challenges were then tested through
an online survey to the GRI community.
Practical Guide to Communication
on Progress
The first version of the Practical Guide
to Communication on Progress was
launched in 2005. This current revised
edition of the guide contains updated
information about creating, sharing and
posting of a COP as well as practical
examples of how companies are
communicating progress. Also included
are helpful definitions, tips on where
to begin, examples and relevant GRI
indicators. (UNGC, 2009)
Making The Connection – Using GRI‘s
G3 Guidelines for the COP
This guide, produced in partnership
with the Global Reporting Initiative,
introduces and explores ways to
address Global Reporting Initiative (GRI)
and Global Compact Communication
on Progress (COP) requirements
simultaneously. By linking the GRI
G3 Guidelines to the ten principles
of the Global Compact, Making the
Connection assists companies in
bridging the gap between the COP and
other sustainability reporting vehicles.
(UNGC/GRI, 2007)
IIRC: The world is changing –
reporting must too
The Integrated Reporting Discussion
Paper, Towards Integrated Reporting
– Communicating Value in the 21st
Century was launched on Monday 12th
September 2011. Integrated Reporting
will provide more comprehensive
and meaningful information about
all aspects of an organization´s
performance and position, presented
in a much clearer, more concise and
more user friendly format. In particular
it will demonstrate the links between
an organization´s financial performance
and the social, environmental and
economic context within which
it operates. The development of
Integrated Reporting is designed to
enhance and consolidate existing
reporting practices to move towards
a reporting framework that provides
the information needed to develop
the global economic model to meet
the challenges of the 21st century.
Integrated Reporting will be clear and
comprehensible, providing a meaningful
assessment of the long term viability
of an organization, meeting the
information needs of investors and
other stakeholders and supporting
the effective allocation of financial,
manufactured, human, intellectual,
natural and social capital.
Leading the Way in Communication
on Progress
This booklet provides inspiration and
ideas on how to communicate progress
in implementing the ten principles. It
is the result of an ongoing dialogue
between the Global Compact Office and
participating companies, and it reflects
experiences and perspectives shared
during a two-day workshop in March
2006 in Geneva. (UNGC, 2006)
Blueprint for Corporate
Sustainability Leadership
The Blueprint offers companies a
model for achieving higher levels
of performance and generating
enhanced value through the Global
Compact. It provides an action plan
in three core areas: (i) integrating the
Global Compact ten principles into
strategies and operations; (ii) taking
action in support of broader UN goals
and issues; and (iii) engaging with
the Global Compact. The Blueprint
identifies best practices in each of
these dimensions, with a total of 50
criteria for leadership.
Designed to inspire advanced
performers to reach the next level
of sustainability, the Blueprint sets
targets that all companies should work
towards in order to ascend the learning
and performance curve.
The Global Compact Self
assessment Tool
Translates the basic expectations
raised by the Global Compact
principles into a number of practical
self-assessment questions and
performance indicators for companies.
The tool enables companies to
diagnose their performance across all
four issue areas, inspire continuous
improvement, and assist in the
development of a Communication
on Progress. (UNGC/DI/Ministry for
Economic and Business Affairs of
Denmark/IFU, 2010)
