Company history
Since 1960, automotive cables have been manufactured at Brake. Production
had started under the name of ”Vohwinkel Wipperfürth” and – after
the merger with ”Märkische Kabelwerke AG” in 1967 was continued under
the name of ”Bergmann Kabelwerke AG”.
Thanks to development of the automotive business of Siemens, the
share in Bergmann Kabelwerke AG was increased from 49 % (in 1987) to
100 % (from 1991), to consistently carry on developing business in the
automobile supply industry.
In the course of the decision taken by Siemens to part with all cable
plants worldwide, business with automotive cables in Brake was separated
into a different company called ”Siemens Automobiltechnik Leitungen
GmbH & Co. KG” (SAL). SAL‘s volume of business at the time was approx.
75.0 million DM with a delivery quantity of approx. 1.3 million km of automotive
cables.
On 2nd December 1999, LEONI Kabel GmbH & Co. KG bought SAL from
Siemens with commercial effect from 30. September 1999 and integrated
it into the business field ”Automotive and Standard Cables” under the new
name LEONI Automotive Cables GmbH & Co. KG (LAC for short).
Current volume of business and material requirements
The current scope of the annual volume of business has remained virtually
unchanged. Products of a higher quality, such as lead-free PVC and polypropylene
insulated cables increasingly replace conventional lead-containing
PVC cables.
For a delivery quantity of approx. 12 million automotive cables,
LAC processed in 2001:
- Tons of copper: approx. 9,500
- Tons of plastics: approx. 3,700
of that PVC: approx. 3,500
and PP: approx. 200
The product structure in 2001 (referred to delivery quantity) is:
- One-core vehicle cables: approx. 95 %

- Cross sectional area 0.22 to 1.00: approx. 84 %

Quality management
and environmental management certification
Already from the beginning, while still running under the name of
Siemens, the business with vehicle cables was audited by certification
bodies in accordance with the respectively valid DIN, ISO and VDA standards.
LAC quality management has last been audited and successfully confi
r m e db yt h eDQS in September 2001 in accordance with ISO 9001/2000,
stepped up by ISO/TS 16949.
LAC-environmental management has been audited according to DIN EN
ISO 14001 within the scope of a joint certification of the cable business
unit.
These certifications are an important confirmation of the quality of our
operating processes and process control, which form the basis of our ability
to successfully implement our quality and environmental policy.
