PTM applies all engine power to<br />
the road<br />
In the new Cayenne S Diesel, the combination of a<br />
powerful eight-cylinder and eight-speed Tiptronic S<br />
has an ideal partner in the form of PTM active allwheel<br />
drive. This Porsche Traction Management system<br />
was specially configured for the sporty, highly dynamic<br />
Cayenne models, be<strong>ca</strong>use its broad range of<br />
torque distribution offers benefits in terms of vehicle<br />
dynamics, agility and traction pre-control and complements<br />
the performance-oriented character of the <strong>ca</strong>rs.<br />
PTM also has the automatic brake differential (ABD)<br />
for improved traction control, anti-slip control (ASR)<br />
for improved vehicle stability and a switchable hill control<br />
assistant (Porsche Hill Control, PHC) for controlled<br />
descents on steep hills.<br />
Porsche Traction Management with active all-wheel<br />
drive directly applies power to the rear axle. The extremely<br />
compact transfer <strong>ca</strong>se of the all-wheel drive is a<br />
so-<strong>ca</strong>lled hang-on solution in a separate housing that<br />
follows the transmission. The multi-plate clutch that<br />
features electronic control by an electric motor regulates<br />
the distribution of drive power to the front axle<br />
with full variability, and there is no fixed base distribution.<br />
If slip increases at the rear wheels, e.g. during<br />
acceleration, a stronger response by the multi-plate<br />
clutch distributes more power to the front wheels. By<br />
permanently monitoring the driving state, the system<br />
is able to react to different driving situations as well as<br />
to driver wishes. This is enabled by auxiliary control of<br />
the active all-wheel drive system that is tuned to vehicle<br />
dynamics; it <strong>ca</strong>n react based on the driving situation<br />
and even preventively – before <strong>und</strong>esirable slip occurs<br />
at one axle. An example: When the driver steers into a<br />
bend, the lateral guiding forces of the steered wheels<br />
are increased by reducing the drive torque at the front<br />
axle, which enables high levels of agility and transverse<br />
acceleration. As the driver then accelerates out of the<br />
bend, the drive torque is optimally distributed for maximum<br />
traction at both axles.<br />
Three offroad modes: offroad rocker switch<br />
The wide-ranging offroad <strong>ca</strong>pabilities of the Cayenne S<br />
Diesel <strong>ca</strong>n be modified over various stages by a central<br />
offroad rocker switch on the centre console. All systems<br />
are then optimised for offroad use, with the goal<br />
of improving traction on unpaved surfaces. In offroad<br />
mode 1, all relevant systems in addition to the hill<br />
descent assist, such as ABS, are also switched to a traction-oriented<br />
