Rovinj prides itself on its forty-year 

old tradition of organizing a true 

tourist festivity. Numerous concerts, 

sports and cultural events add to a 

big celebration attracting people 

from the entire Istria to Rovinj, the 

town of St. Euphemia. The biggest

for a diverse, high-quality,

local and international jazz musicians 

presenting themselves in 

the town of Poreč during summer 

months. Sounds of both classical 

and contemporary jazz in all its 

rich derivations resound each

gallery complex within the 

Regional Museum of Poreč situated 

in the very old town core, 

and the performances leave neither 

the audience nor the critics

Theatre Ulysses is a 

theatre space where spiritually 

similar artists intertwine. Movement 

in art, progress and voyage 

mark the active attitude towards 

reality and history. Voyage is one 

of the ways of not accepting the 

inevitable fate, so typical of the 

Mediterranean culture, from Homer 

onwards. Each man is destined 

to wander, outside or inside. 

Everyone is in search of his own 

Ithaca. Individuals and characters 

travel, whereas Ulysses is to all a 

symbolic figure. And a reminder 

never to give up hope and work

ist ein Theater, in dem sich geistig 

verwandet Künstler finden. 

Das Bewegen in der Kunst, Voranschreiten 

und Reisen kennzeichnen 

die aktive Haltung gegenüber 

der Wirklichkeit und der 

Geschichte. Das Reisen ist eine 

der Weisen des sich nicht Zufriedengebens 

mit dem unentrinnbaren 

Schicksal, typisch für die mediterrane 

Kultur von Homer bis in 

unsere Tage. Da ist jeder Mensch 

zu äußerlichen oder inneren Irrfahrten 

verurteilt, jeder auf der 

Suche nach dem eigenen Ithaka. 

Sie reisen als Einzelne und als 

Gestalten, und für alle von ihnen 

ist Ulysses ein Vorbild. Es ist auch 

eine Erinnerung daran, daß man 

nie aufhören sollte zu hoffen und 

zu arbeiten…

Media Scape Novigrad 

The international gathering of artists working 

in the field of new media begins on 31 August 

and lasts to 3 September. It comprises workshops, 

lectures and presentations of numerous 

participants of the gathering held in the 

Museum Lapidarium. Novigrad, a small town 

with long and rich history, is a true inspiration 

for discussions and creations of art photographs; 

video, visual and sound multimedia 

installations and performances reassess influences 

of new architectural solutions on the 

old town nucleus. Interested audiences can 

join the artists daily and enjoy their work. 

Grožnjan an ancient town in north-western 

Istria, takes great pride in its wealth of 

tradition, cultural heritage and natural beauty, 

all of which is ennobled by art. Here you can 

attend frequent concerts of classical music, 

the painting manifestation Ex Tempore, and 

numerous exhibitions at the municipal gallery 

and twenty private galleries and studios. 

Media Scape Novigrad 

Die internationale Tagung von Künstlern, die im Bereich 

der neuen Medien tätig sind, beginnt am 31. August 

und dauert bis zum 3. September. Es handelt sich um 

Workshops, Vorlesungen, Präsentationen und Illustrationen 

zahlreicher Teilnehmer dieser Veranstaltung, die im 

Museum Lapidarium stattfindet. Novigrad ist, als kleine 

Stadt mit langer und reicher Vergangenheit, die richtige 

Inspiration für Diskussionen und die Entwicklung von 

Kunstfotos, Videos, visuellen und akustischen multimedialen 

Installationen sowie Performancen, die die Einflüsse 

neuer architektonischer Lösungen im Altstadtkern 

hinterfragen. Interessiertes Publikum kann sich jeden Tag 

hinzugesellen und sich an ihre Arbeit erfreuen. 

Grožnjan, das alte Städtchen in Nordwestistrien, 

kann sich seiner reichen Tradition, dem Kulturerbe und 

der Schönheit der Naturambientes rühmen. Darüber 

hinaus ist all das mit Kunst veredelt. Zahlreiche kulturgeschichtliche 

Denkmäler sind heute Bühne des Kulturund 

Unterhaltungslebens. In Grožnjan können sie die 

zahlreichen klassischen Musikkonzerte, die Malermanifestation 

“Ex tempore”, zahlreiche Ausstellungen in der 

Stadtgalerie sowie ca. 20 private Galerien und Studios 

besuchen..

Parish Church of St. Bernard in 

Funtana is a one-nave building with the sacristy, 

built in the 1621, extended in the 1941 and reconstructed 

in the 1988. The bell tower from the 

17th century was refurbished in the year 2000. It 

is 34 meters high. On the left side altar there is 

a painting of the Virgin with a Child, called Our 

Virgin of the Holy Beads by St. Dominic and St. 

Catherine. This oil painting of an unknown artist 

is believed to date back the beginning of the 17th 

century and it is painted in the early Venetian baroque 

style. It has been placed at the altar again 

after the restauration in the 1994. Behind the altar 

there is a valuable painting presenting the Holy 

Mother with a Child and saints. The painting is 

the most valuable work of art kept in Funtana. It 

was restored recently and according to the style 

there are two separate themes: the upper image 

of the Holy Mother with a Child is a renaissance 

piece of art, while the lower part of the painting 

presenting saints, belongs to a baroque period. 

The author is unknown. On the side altars there 

are sculptures of Blessed Virgin Mary of Sorrow, 

St. Bernard and St. Anthony of Padua. 

Die Pfarrkirche 

Hl. Bernhard Funtana 

Das einschiffige Bauwerk mit Sakristei wurde im Jahre 

1621 erbaut, 1941 erweitert und 1988 renoviert. 

Der Glockenturm, im 17 Jh. erbaut und im Jahr 2000 

renoviert, ist 34 m hoch. Hinter dem Altar hängt ein 

Gemälde der Muttergottes mit dem Kind und einem 

Heiligen eines unbekannten Künstlers. Das Gemälde 

ist das bedeutendste Kunstwerk Funtanas, das vor 

kurzem vollkommen restauriert wurde. Bei der Maltechnik 

fließen zwei Stilrichtungen gelungen ineinander 

über. Die Muttergottes mit dem Kind zeigt noch 

die kühle, fixierte Maltechnik der Renaissancezeit, 

dagegen erkennt man an dem Heiligen im unteren 

Teil des Bildes typische Merkmale der Malkunst des 

Barockzeitalters. Am linken Seitenaltar fällt der Blick 

auf eine Tafel, deren Motiv die Muttergottes mit dem 

Kind und den Heiligen Dominik und Katharina zeigt. 

Das unter dem Titel „Rosenkranz-Muttergottes“ bekannte 

und interessante Ölgemälde (Öl auf Leinwand) 

eines unbekannten Künstlers wurde im Stil des frühen 

venezianischen Barocks gemalt und geht auf den 

Anfang des 17. Jh. zurück. 1994 fand das Kunstwerk 

nach einer eingehenden Restaurierung seinen Platz 

über diesem Altar. 

Višnjan 

The Parish church, refurbished with colonades 

in the neo-classical style, imposingly dominates 

the complex of the old town nucleus with almost 

amphitheatrically rounded buildings. In front of 

the church of St. Kvirik and Julita, there is a 

Venetian loggia from the 18th century, where 

public gatherings were held and on Sundays, 

after the mass, communal dispositions were 

read. It was made of white limestone, open on 

three sides and with a roof supported by pillars, 

as well as seven round columns. 

Pula - architecture 

between the two wars 

The 1930s were a period of extremely lively and 

valuable modern architectural activities. New 

buildings were erected in Pula endowing the 

city with the vitality of European avant-garde 

trends. New materials and techniques were 

opposed to previous pseudo and neo styles. 

Angiolo Mazzoni from Bologna designed the 

Main Post Office building in 1933. It was built of 

Istrian stone, covered with granite and marble 

and its atrium is unexpectedly decorated with 

red mosaics. The spiral staircase reflects the 

Italian Futurism and Russian Constructivism. 

Višnjan 

Die Pfarrkirche aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, erneuert durch 

Säulengänge des neoklassistischen Stils, dominiert imposant 

über den Komplex des Zentrums des alten Stadtkerns 

mit den fast amphitheatralisch umschlossenen 

Bauten. Vor der Kirche befindet sich die venezianische 

Loge aus dem 18. Jahrhundert in welcher öffentliche 

Treffen abgehalten, und Sonntags, nach der Messe, gemeindliche 

Verfügungen gelesen wurden. Sie wurde aus 

weißem Kalkstein erbaut, geöffnet auf drei Seiten und 

mit einem Dach, welches Säulen, sowie sieben runde 

Kolonnen halten. 

Pula - die Architektur 

der Zwischenkriegszeit 

In 20-er und 30-er Jahren gibt es in Istrien ein vielfältiges, 

modernes architektonisches Schaffen: In Pula zum 

Beispiel werden Gebäude gebaut, die die Vitalität der europäischen 

Avantgarde widerspiegeln. Ein gutes Beispiel 

modernistischer Einflüsse ist das Gebäude der Hauptpost, 

das Werk des italienischen Architekten Angiolo Mazzoni, 

gebaut 1933. Es wurde aus istrischem Stein gebaut und 

mit Marmor und Granit getäfelt, während sich in seinem 

Atrium ein rotes Mosaik befindet. Die gebogenen Treppen 

weisen Elemente des russischen Konstruktivismus und 

italienischen Futurismus auf.

Abandoned Stone Quarries Vrsar 

The ancient abandoned stone quarries should also 

be added up to the sights of Vrsar. In the Vrsar 

quarries the stone has been obtained ever since 

Roman times. Within easy reach of the basilica of 

St. Mary, on the islets offshore there are remains of 

abandoned quarries (e.g. on the top of the islet Sv. 

Juraj - St. George). Some art historians brought up 

a theory that maybe the monumental and monolithic 

cupola of the East Gothic king Theodore the 

Great’s (493-526) mausoleum in Ravenna (having a 

diameter of 10.76 m and weighing 230 t) is made 

of the rock broken off the top of that islet. On the 

peak Gavanov Vrh east of Vrsar there is also an 

abandoned quarry, as well as on a hill north-east 

of Vrsar. High-quality grey stone (Aurac) has been 

obtained here ever since Romanesque times. In 

the time of the Renaissance and Baroque the highquality 

stone from Vrsar (pietra di Orsera) was well 

known in Italian towns. It was especially used in 

Venice for building palaces, bridges and churches. 

In order to provide good quality stone, Italian sculptors 

and constructors have occasionally visited Vrsar. 

The first figures concerning exportation of Vrsar 

stone to Venice date back to the 14th century. 

Verlassene Steinbrüche Vrsar 

Zu den Denkmälern Vrsar muss man auch alte verlassene 

Steinbrüche zählen. In diesen Steinbrüchen 

wurde von römischen Zeit an bis zur Gegenwart kontinuierlich 

Stein gewonnen. In der Nähe der romanischen 

Basilika der Heiligen Maria und auf den vorgelagerten 

Inseln sind Reste verlassener Steinbrüchen 

zu sehen (an der Spitze der Insel Sv. Juraj - St. Georg). 

Manche Kunsthistoriker vertreten die Meinung, dass 

vielleicht die monumentalle Kuppel (Durchmesser 

10,76 m, Gewicht 2301) im Mausoleum des ostgotischen 

Königs Teodorus des Grossen (493-526) in 

Ravenna aus dem Stein gebaut wurde, der von der 

Spitze dieser kleinen Insel stammt. Auch auf dem 

Gavan Gipfel östlich von Vrsar befindet sich ein verlassener 

Steinbruch sowie auf dem Hügel nordöstlich 

von Vrsar. Da wurde in der Zeit der Romanik hochwertiger 

grauer Stein (Surac) gewonnen. In der Zeit 

des Barocks und der Renaissance war hochwertiger 

Stein aus Vrsar in den italienischen Städten (pietra di 

Orsera) bekannt. Besonders gern wurde der Stein aus 

Vrsar in Venedig zum Bauen von Palästen, Brücken, 

Kirchen usw. genutzt.

the Truffle of Istria 

The truffle was discovered by 

ancient Romans, well known 

gourmets, eighteen centuries 

ago. During the five centuries 

of Venetian rule, Motovun 

Forest was called St. Mark’s 

Forest and only certain individuals 

were allowed to gather 

truffles. During the Austro- 

Hungarian rule there was only 

one final destination for the 

truffle - the Royal Palace in 

Vienna. However, even today 

it remains a gastronomic delicacy, 

although its position at 

the table hasn’t been defined 

yet: whether it’s food or just 

seasoning.

cuisine today 

Many dishes originated from 

the famine today are experiencing 

their reawakening. Thus 

the onetime alimentation of 

the fishermen and the peasants 

nowadays is considered 

congruent to the principles of 

the most modern nutritionist’s 

trends. An alimentation rich of 

(prevalently blue) fish, with the 

prevalence of boiled, rather 

then baked dishes, abundance 

of fruit and vegetables, self 

grown plants, the use of olive 

oil and a moderate consumption 

of (mostly red) wine - are 

the main peculiarities of the 

Mediterranean cuisine, otherwise 

of a trendy movement: 

the Mediterranean way of life 

(the Mediterranean diet).

Heute werden viele Gerichte, 

die aus der Not entstanden 

sind, wiederentdeckt. So behauptet 

man jetzt von der Art 

wie sich die Fischer und Landarbeiter 

damals ernährten, 

dass sie den Grundsätzen modernster

viel Fisch (vorwiegend Speisefisch) 

und gekochten Speisen 

gewinnt nun die Oberhand 

über gebratene Speisen. Viel 

Obst und Gemüse, Wildgräser, 

Olivenöl sowie ein mäßiger 

Weinkonsum - hauptsächlich 

Rotwein - sind die grundlegenden 

Merkmale der mediterranen 

Küche und damit der 

mediterranen Lebensweise, 

die zur Zeit voll im Trend ist.

The Sole lives throughout the Adriatic 

and swims to a depth of as 

much as 250 m. Its elliptic body is 

completely flattened, when looking 

from the side - it looks outstretched 

and asymmetric. This 

shape is caused by its way of life 

– being buried on the sandy and 

sludgy bottom in a way that you 

only notice the part of its body that 

juts out. The average weight of this 

fish is around two hundred grams, 

and it is around thirty centimetres 

long.

Der Schollenfisch ist ein Bewohner 

der ganzen Adria und er hält sich 

bis zu einer Tiefe von 250 m auf. 

Der ellyptische Körper ist seitlich 

völlig platt - er sieht wie langgezogen 

und unsymmetrisch aus. Diese 

Formart ist durch die Lebensweise 

bedingt - er ist am sandigen und 

schlammigen Boden eingegraben, 

sodass nur sein hervorstehenster 

Körperteil hervorragt. Das Durchschnittsgewicht 

beträgt etwa zwanzig 

Dekagramm und die Länge etwa 

dreissig Zentimeter. 

Sardela 

No fish, shellfish or crab has managed 

to arouse the culinary imagination 

of the Croatian people as the 

sardela (sardine) has. The sardine 

is worthy of our reverence, and it 

returns our devotion by leaving us 

free of remorse that we have disrupted 

the balance of nature. There 

are a number of mouth-watering 

recipes that will instantly whisk 

you away from your everyday gastronomic 

routine. Savour a dish of 

salted sardines and spaghetti with 

olive oil, or take cleaned sardines, 

dip them in beer batter and then 

deep-fry in hot oil. For true gourmets, 

the perfect dish will be a 

sardine moussaka or sardines and 

spinach. Desert follows every main 

dish, and what can be better than a 

sardine cake made of salted crepes 

and sardine puree, served warm 

with a salad. After tasting these 

recipes, you will have to admit 

that the sardela is the uncrowned 

queen of culinary art. 

Die Sardelle 

Kein Fisch, keine Muschel, kein 

Krebs hat soviel kulinarische Phantasie 

erweckt, wie dies beim Volk 

die Sardelle gemacht hat. Man muss 

sich vor ihr aus kulinarischer Ehre 

verneigen und sie wird uns Liebe 

ohne Gewissensbisse darüber, dass 

wir das natürliche Gleichgewicht 

gestört haben, zurückgeben. Einige 

anziehende Rezepte werden Sie 

zumindest für einen Augenblick aus 

dem standardisierten gastronomischen 

Alltag herausziehen. Kosten 

Sie daher die salzigen Sardellen mit 

Spaghetti in Olivenöl oder tauchen 

Sie diese, gesäubert, in Bierteig ein 

und backen Sie diese in tiefem und 

heißem Öl heraus. Für wahre Sardellenliebhaber 

wird eine Moussaka 

aus Sardellen oder Sardellen mit 

Spinat eine ausgezeichnete Wahl 

sein. Weil jedem Hauptgericht ein 

Dessert folgt, ist es möglich, eine 

Torte aus Sardellen zu machen, 

wofür salzige Palatschinken und 

Sardellenpüree notwendig sind. 

Das Dessert wird warm zu einem 

Salat serviert. Nach dem Verkosten 

dieser Rezepte wird jeder zugeben, 

dass die Sardelle die ungekrönte 

kulinarische Königin ist.

Tribute in oil 

From the first half of the year 1010 until the 

1040s Istria was formed as a principality and 

was ruled by a monarch. During that period a 

few big differences were noticeable between the 

social relations amongst Venetian western Istria 

and central Istria, that is the Pazin principality 

which was formed on the principles of the feudal 

system and the coastal cities which were formed 

as city and village municipalities. Along with the 

political and cultural differences between coast 

and the centre, there was also a gastronomical 

difference. The coastal cities of Istria were successful 

in commerce and fishing, and thanks to 

this they began building prosperous commercial 

relations with Venice during the 10th and 11th 

centuries. A connection with Venice through free 

commerce increased its political and cultural influence 

over Istria’s coastal cities. The agricultural 

rise of the coastal cities, especially the production 

of oil and wine, and salt and sea commerce, 

granted their wish: to have independence from 

Venetian influence. But, after defeating it, Venice 

abolished all benefits of free commerce for cities 

from Savudrija to Premantura and imposed taxes 

which were payable in oil. 

Abgabe in Form von Öl 

Von der Mitte der 10er bis zu den 40er Jahren des 11. 

Jahrhunderts war Istrien wie ein Fürstentum formiert, mit 

einem Fürsten als Haupt. In dieser Zeit sind große Unterschiede 

in den gesellschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen 

dem venezianischen westlichen Istrien und dem Inneren 

sichtbar, beziehungsweise dem Fürstentum von Pazin - 

formiert nach dem Prinzip der feudalen Beziehungen, 

während die Küstenstädte wie städtische und ländliche 

Gemeinden formiert waren. Neben dem politischen und 

kulturellen Unterschied war zwischen der Küste und dem 

Inneren auch der gastronomische Unterschied anwesend. 

Die istrischen Küstenstädte übten erfolgreich den Handel 

und den Fischfang aus und gingen somit während des 

10. und 11. Jahrhunderts günstige Handelsbeziehungen 

mit Venedig ein. Durch die Verbindung mit Venedig über 

den freien Handel verstärkt sich deren politischer und 

kultureller Einfluss auf die istrischen Küstenstädte. Der 

landwirtschaftliche Anstieg der Küstenstädte, besonders 

bei der Herstellung von Öl und Wein, beim Fischfang, 

bei der Salzherstellung und dem Seefahrtshandel, führt 

zu deren Wunsch nach Selbstständigkeit ohne venezianischen 

Einfluss. Aber, nachdem Venedig sie besiegt 

hat, hat es alle Begünstigungen des freien Handels der 

Städte von Savudrija bis Premantura aufgehoben und die 

Bezahlung einer Abgabe in Form von Öl eingeführt. 

Muscat Momjanski is typical for upper 

Bujština, area around Buje (Momjanština, area 

around Momjan, where it gets its name). According 

its morphological characteristics it belongs in a 

group with Muscat White and according to economic 

and sensory characteristics that’s a special kind of 

Muscat. At the extraordinary positions of that area 

gives wines of special quality. Aroma of this wine is 

delicate and pleasant Muscat scent (grape aromas 

which give nice flowery rose, sage fragrance etc). 

Taste is full and rounded, and Muscat taste stays in 

a mouth for a long time. The wine is mostly strong 

or very strong, usually over 12% vol. of alcohol. Because 

of the high content of sugar in grapes, there’s 

often nonfermented sugar in wine, so it’s produced 

as dry, semi-dry or semi-sweet Muscat. Backlog of 

sugar in wine emphasises even more its fullness and 

delicacy. Tasting of this wine whether dry or with a 

backlog of sugar, represents a special enjoyment and 

its also suitable as an aperitif (dry) and as a desert 

wine. It’s the best at the temperature of 12°C, as its 

sensory characteristics (pleasant aroma and delicious 

taste) are best expressed. 

Der Muskatwein von Momjan ist 

charakteristisch für das untere Gebiet von Buje - 

Momjan (die sogenannte Bujština - Momjanština), 

woher auch seine Bezeichnung stammt und wo 

er auch seit langer Zeit anwesend ist. Anhand der 

morphologischen Charakteristiken gehört er zur 

Gruppe der weißen Muskatweine und anhand der 

wirtschaftlichen und sensorischen Charakteristiken 

des Weins stellt er eine gesonderte Muskatart dar. 

An aussergewöhnlichen Positionen dieser Gegend 

gibt er dem Wein eine besondere Güte. Das Aroma 

dieses Weins ist fein, diskret und hat einen angenehmen 

Muskatduft - sortierte Traubenaromen, welche 

einen feinen blumigen Duft der Rose, des Salbeis 

u.a. verleihen. Der Geschmack ist voll und abgerundet, 

und der Muskatgeschmack bleibt lange Zeit im 

Mund zurück. Der Wein ist hauptsächlich stark oder 

sehr stark, üblicherweise über 12% Alkoholvolumen. 

Aufgrund des hohen Traubenzuckergehalts bleibt oft 

nicht abgegärter Zucker im Wein zurück und er wird 

deshalb als trockener, halbtrockener oder halbsüsser 

Muskatwein hergestellt. Der Zuckerrückstand im 

Wein potenziert noch mehr seine Fülle und Feinheit. 

Das Verkosten dieses Weins, egal ob trocken oder 

mit Zuckerrückstand, stellt einen besonderen Genuss 

dar, und er ist ebenso auch als Aperitif (trocken) 

oder als Dessertwein angemessen.

Legend of 

Rovinj’s martyr 

According to legend St. Euphemia 

was brought to Rovinj one night 

after a summer storm. The townspeople 

found a stone sarcophagus 

that was washed ashore with 

the body of the martyr. They spent 

all day trying to pull out the sarcophagus 

with the help of horse 

and bullock drawn carts. But in 

vain, the sarcophagus could not 

be moved. At the end of the day 

a boy came down with a pair of 

heifers and to everyone’s surprise 

managed to haul the sarcophagus 

to the very top of the hill where 

the church of St. George once 

stood. This miraculous event became 

a historical one for the local 

people. Very soon St. Euphemia 

was proclaimed the patron saint 

of Rovinj. 

Die Legende 

von der Märtyrerin 

von Rovinj 

Anhand der Überlieferung, welche 

zu einer Legende wurde, gelangte 

die Hl. Eufemia nach Rovinj nach 

einer gewittrigen Sommernacht. 

Die Einwohner Rovinjs fanden an 

der Küste einen steinernen Sarkophag 

in welchem sich der Körper 

der Märtyrerin befand. Sie haben 

sich den ganzen Tag bemüht 

den Sarkophag an den Strand zu 

ziehen, indem sie Gespänne mit 

Ochsen und Pferden benutzten. 

Umsonst, der Sarkophag bewegte 

sich kein Stück. Gegen Ende des 

Tages ging ein Junge mit ein paar 

Kälbern bis zur Küste und, zur allgemeinen 

Verwunderung, zog er 

den Sarkophag heraus, und zog 

ihn bis zur direkten Spitze des Hügels 

auf welchem sich die Kirche 

des Hl. Juraj befand. Dieses wundersame 

Ereignis war ein Einschnitt 

in die kollektive Vergangenheit 

der Einwohner Rovinjs. Die Heilige 

Eufemia wurde schnell zur 

Schutzpatronin der Stadt. 

Monkodonja 

The Monkodonja Fort hill is situated at about 5 

km from Rovinj, on top of the hill whose northern 

slopes goes down to a fertile plain and continue 

on towards the Turnina hill, while the southern 

slope turns into a field which is only 3 km distant 

from the seashore. There were two entrances 

to the settlement, one from the north and one 

from the west. The western gate, which faced 

the nearby seashore, was the main entrance to 

the fort hill settlement. This gate, at the beginning 

only a simple passage through the wall, was later, 

due to the increasing danger of enemy attacks, 

reinforced and made a respectable piece of defensive 

fortification. The settlement was divided 

into three parts. On the very top of the hill there 

was the settlement acropolis encircled by defensive 

walls. That there lived the richer families 

show the remains of bigger buildings made of 

stone and wood. Outside of the acropolis there 

was the upper and the lower city with simpler 

houses and buildings for craftsmen’s workshops. 

It is estimated that 1000 people inhabited the settlement 

- quite a number for a prehistoric settlement 

of that kind. 

Monkodonja 

Die Gradina Monkodonja befindet sich auf einer 

Anhöhe ca. 5 km östlich von Rovinj. Die nördliche 

Hänge senken sich zu fruchtbaren Feldern herab und 

setzten sich bis zum Berg Turnina fort, an den südlichen 

Abhang knüpft ein Feld, welches zum 3 km entfernten 

Meer führt. In die Siedlung kam man durch 

zwei Tore, eines lag an der Westseite, das andere an 

der Nordseite der Siedlung. Das zur nahen Meeresküste 

gelegene Westtor war der wichtigste Zugang 

zur Stadt. Am Anfang war das Tor nur ein einfacher 

Durchlass durch die Schutzmauer. Aufgrund größerer 

Gefahren durch Überfall wurde das Tor im Laufe 

der Zeit weiter ausgebaut, so daß ein respektables 

Schutzbauwerk entstand. Die Stadt selbst bestand 

aus drei Teilen. Auf dem Gipfel befand sich die Akropolis, 

die von einer Schutzmauer umgeben war. Hier 

wohnten die wohlhabenderen Familien, das belegen 

Reste von großen Stein- und Holzbauten. Außerhalb 

der Akropolis lagen die Ober- und die Unterstadt. 

Dort befanden sich Handwerkerplätze und Wohnhäuser, 

die viel einfacher waren als die Häuser auf der 

Akropolis. Etwa 1000 Personen lebten nach Schätzungen 

in dieser Siedlung, für diese prähistorische 

Zeit eine susgesprochen hohe Einwohnerzahl.

The Chapel of St. Mary Formoza Pula 

The small chapel with its cross-shaped ground-plan is just 

a small part that remains from the old Basilica of St. Mary 

Formoza that was given the name Admirable because of 

its beauty and monumentality. This luxurious monument, 

built in the 6th century was the idea of bishop Maximianus 

of Ravenna (498.-556.), who was born in Veštar, near 

Rovinj. During the ten-day Venetian robbery of Pula in 

1243, the Basilica was damaged in a fire and because of 

its location in swampy medieval Pula, it was subsequently 

named del canneto (made of reed). Formoza’s marble 

pillars were taken to Venice in 1547 and used for the 

construction of the Libreria S. Marco’ library’s stairs, and 

partly for the hall Delle quattro porte in the Doge’s Palace 

too. The remains of the rocky material were used in 1697 

for the reconstruction of Communal Palace at Forum. 

However, only the southern chapel, part of the northern 

perimeter wall with signs of a side entrance and circular 

“pastofories” have been conserved from the remains of 

the sacral complex. The Basilica of St. Mary Formoza was 

the greatest construction project and the highest investment 

of late antique Pula. Together with the luxurious 

Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, Formoza is the most important 

monument of sacral art in Croatia dating back to the 

times of the Justinian renewal of the Empire. 

Die Kapelle der Hl. Maria Formosa Pula 

Die kleine Kapelle von kreuzförmigem Grundriss ist nur 

ein kleiner bewahrter Teil der einstigen Basilika der Hl. 

Maria Formosa, welche die Bezeichnung Krasna (Bezaubernde) 

aufgrund ihrer Schönheit und Monumentalität 

erhalten hat. Das prachtvolle Gebäude ließ im 6. Jahrhundert 

der Bischof von Ravena Maximilian (498. - 556.), 

geboren in Veštro neben Rovinj, erbauen. In der Zeit der 

venezianischen zehntägigen Plünderung von Pula im 

Jahr 1243 verunglückte sie im Feuer und wurde danach 

aufgrund ihrer Lage im sumpfigen mittelalterlichen Pula 

„del canneto“ (aus Schilf) ernannt. Marmorsäulen von 

Formosa werden im Jahr 1547 nach Venedig transportiert 

und bei der Erbauung des Treppenhauses der Bibliothek 

Libreria S. Marco verwendet, und teilweise auch 

im Saal Delle quatro porte im Dogenpalast. Das restliche 

steinerne Material wird im Jahr 1697 für die Erneuerung 

des Gemeindepalasts am Forum verwendet. Vom großen 

sakralen Komplex sind nur die südliche Kapelle und ein 

Teil der nördlichen perimetralen Mauer mit Andeutung 

eines lateralen Eingangs und zyklischen Pastoforien erhalten. 

Die Basilika der Hl. Maria Formosa war das größte 

Bauunternehmen und die umfangreichste Investition des 

spätantiken Pulas. Neben der prachtvollen Basilika des 

Euphrat in Poreč ist Formosa das bedeutendste Denkmal 

der sakralen Kunst auf kroatischem Boden aus der Zeit 

von Justinus` Erneuerung des Königreichs. 

Roč lies 10 km east of Buzet. This hilltop town 

surrounded by defensive walls was mentioned as 

early as 1064. Founded as an Illyirian settlement, 

it grew into a Roman castrum. In the Middle Ages, 

it transformed into a fortified castle, separated by 

walls and defensive towers and Small and Large 

Gate. During the 15th and the 16th century, Roč 

was the centre of Croatian literacy, editorship, 

and printing based on the oldest Slavic Glagolitic 

Alphabet. 

Črni Grad and Beli Grad 

On the slopes of Ćićarija, right above Roč field, 

lie the ancient fortresses Črni Grad and Beli Grad. 

These forgotten fortresses stand on two elevations, 

divided by a deep and narrow gorge. Črni 

Grad, built of brown and black stone which easily 

and rapidly warms up, lies on the top of the hill 

of the same name, at a height of 562 metres. 

Beli Grad, built of white limestone, lies somewhat 

to the east, on the other side of the gorge, on 

Semić hill. Devotees of historic structures who 

set out towards Lanišće will surely be surprised 

by the beauty of landscape, magnificent views, 

as well as impressive remains testifying to the 

characteristic history. 

Roč 

Gegründet als illyrische Siedlung, entwächst es in 

ein römisches Castrum und in der Mitte des Mittelalters 

verwandelt es sich in eine befestigte Burg, 

abgeschottet durch Mauern mit Abwehrtürmen, sowie 

dem Großen und dem Kleinen Tor. Während des 

15. und 16. Jahrhunderts war Roč das Zentrum des 

kroatischen Schrifttums, Verlags- und Druckwesens, 

begründet auf der ältesten slawischen Schrift, der 

Glagoljica. 

Črni Grad und Beli Grad 

An den Hängen des Gebiets Ćićarija, direkt oberhalb 

von Ročko Polje, befinden sich die alten Festungen 

Črni Grad und Beli Grad. Die heute in Vergessenheit 

geratenen Festungen liegen auf zwei durch tiefe und 

enge Schluchten geteilte Anhöhen. Črni Grad wurde 

aus braunen und schwarzen Felssteinen errichtet, 

die sich in der Sonne leicht und schnell erhitzen und 

befindet sich auf der Spitze eines gleichnamigen 562 

Meter hohen Hügels. Beli Grad, erbaut aus weißem 

Kalkstein, befindet sich etwas östlicher auf der anderen 

Seite der Schlucht, auf dem Hügel Semić. Liebhaber 

von Altertümern, die sich in Richtung Lanišće 

begeben, werden von der landschaftlichen Schönheit, 

dem weiten Blick sowie den beeindruckenden 

Ruinen, die von einer spezifischen Vergangenheit 

zeugen, sicherlich verwundert sein.

Rabac 

Today, Rabac is a well-known tourist resort. By 

the middle of the 19th century, it was a small 

fishermen village with hardly ten houses. Due to 

the beautiful bay and splendid, tame surroundings, 

it soon attracted first visitors. In 1876, Richard 

Francis Burton, an English writer and a passionate 

traveler, was among the first tourists who 

stayed in Rabac. At that time Rabac witnessed 

the building of the first villas. The most wellknown 

was the villa belonging to the Prohaska 

family, Czechs by origin, who were distinguished 

tradesmen from Rijeka. Unfortunately, the villa 

was destroyed during the Second World War, but 

one of the most attractive locations in Rabac still 

bears the name of Prohaska. ‘Quarnaro’, the first 

hotel in Rabac, was opened on 11th June, 1889. 

The hotel had only a few rooms and a pub on the 

ground floor. Kaiser, the Austrian officer, who was 

a regular client of that first hotel, later bought 

Dubrova, an estate close to Labin. The chronicle 

writers would point out yet another curiosity - at 

the beginning of this century in 1907, Prince Ferdinand, 

the Austro-Hungarian heir to the throne, 

visited Rabac and was saluted by people who 

had gathered in the harbour. 

Il paese di Rabac, ein bekannter Fremdenverkehrsort 

bei Labin, wird in Grundbüchern zum 

ersten Mal im Jahre 1826 erwähnt. Mitte des 19. Jhs. 

war es ein kleines Fischerdorf mit nur zehn Häusern. 

Wegen der schönen Bucht und der reizvollen 

Landschaft wurde es bald von den ersten Ausflüglern 

besucht. Der erste bekannte Gast von Rabac war der 

englische Reiseschriftsteller Richard Francis Burton, 

der im Jahre 1876 in Rabac weilte. Zu dieser Zeit 

wurden in Rabac die ersten Sommerhäuser erbaut. 

Eines der schönsten Sommerhäuser gehörte der bekannten 

Familie Prohaska aus Rijeka, die aus Tschechien 

stammte. Nach ihrem Namen wird heutzutage 

einer der schönsten Teile von Rabac benannt, und 

das Sommerhaus selbst wurde während des Zweiten 

Weltkrieges zerstört. Das erste Hotel „Quarnero“ 

wurde am 11. Juni 1889 eröffnet. In diesem Hotel gab 

es damals nur einige Zimmer, und im Erdgeschoss 

befand sich die Gaststätte. Der regelmässige Gast 

des ersten Hotels war der österreichische Offizier 

Kaiser, der später die Stancija (Herrenhaus) Dubrova 

unweit von Labin kaufte. Die Chronisten berichten, 

dass Rabac Anfang dieses Jhs. den österreichischen 

Thronfolger Prinzen Ferdinand bewirtet hatte. Zu dieser 

Gelegenheit würde ihm im Hafen salutiert. 

The island of St. Nicholas 

This natural breakwater in Poreč has been 

inhabited since prehistoric times. The first inhabitants 

to live here were priests, most likely 

from Greece who built the church in honour of 

St. Anastasius in the 9th century. They left the 

island at the beginning of the 12th century and 

Poreč’s bishop Bertoldo relinquished it to the 

Benedictines from the monastery of St. Nicholas 

of Lido in 1114 together with all of its assets. 

Even the price of that transaction is known: the 

fee was symbolic, one Libra a year was to be 

paid off on 21st November, on the Feast of St. 

Mauro who is the Patron Saint of Poreč. On 6th 

December 1481 the island was given the name 

of St. Nicholas of the Island after the Venetian 

monastery from where the monks arrived. 

From then on the island became a holy place 

for sailors, captains and boat owners who each 

December made a pilgrimage from every part 

of Istria even coming from Venice to have their 

boats blessed and saying prayers for a calm 

sea. Each person would pay for the Mass, and 

the Benedictines would give them a Miracle 

medal: whose upper side contained a picture 

of Our Lady within the clouds holding Jesus in 

her arms with the island below her, where the 

tower-lighthouse can be seen, St. Nicholas is 

kneeling with his hand pointing to Poreč in front 

of which a large boat is situated. 

Insel Hl. Nikola 

Diese natürliche Mole von Poreč war seit der Vorgeschichte 

besiedelt. Die ersten Einwohner, von welchen 

man verlässlich weiß, dass sie hier längere Zeit ansässig 

waren, waren Geistliche, höchstwahrscheinlich 

griechische, welche im 9. Jahrhundert dem Heiligen 

Anastasius zu Ehren eine Kirche erbaut haben. Diese 

verlassen die Insel Anfang des 12. Jh. und der Bischof 

von Poreč Bertoldo überlasst sie mit all ihren Gütern 

im Jahr 1114 den Benediktinern des Klosters des Hl. 

Nikola von Lido. Man kennt auch den Preis dieser 

Transaktion: die Abfindung war symbolisch, ein Pfund 

jährlich und es musste am 21. November, am Tag des 

Hl. Mauro, dem Schutzpatronen von Poreč, ausbezahlt 

werden. Anhand des venezianischen Klosters auf dem 

Lido, aus welchem die Mönche ankamen, erhielt die 

Insel am 6. Dezember 1481 den Namen Sveti Nikola 

od Otoka (Heiliger Nikola der Inseln). Seitdem wurde 

die Insel zu einem Kultort der Matrosen, Kapitäne und 

Schiffseigentümer, welche immer im Dezember aus 

allen Ecken Istriens und sogar aus Venedig hierher 

pilgern und ihre neuen Schiffe segnen lassen und für 

ein gutes Meer beten. Und jedem, der etwas für den 

Gottesdienst bezahlt hat, haben die Benediktiner eine 

wundertätige Medaille ausgeteilt: auf der oberen Seite 

ist in Wolken und mit Jesus in den Armen die Muttergottes, 

unterhalb von ihr kniet auf der Insel, auf welcher 

man auch den Turm-Leuchtturm sieht, der Heilige 

Nikola, welcher mit der Hand in Richtung Poreč zeigt, 

wo ein großes Schiff davor steht.

Just like the nearby capes Sipar and Tiola, 

Katoro once probably belonged to the ancient 

Sepomaja, today an important archaeological 

site. The precious archaeological discoveries 

and the findings about this ancient port, settlement 

and the remains of the Roman villa 

rusticae, are possible to be found and 

visited at the 2nd and 3rd floor of the 

Umag City Museum, reachable if continuing 

along the track over the picturesque 

Juricani, Radini and Lovrečica. Situated on 

a peninsula, founded in the transitional 

period from late antiquity into the early 

middle age, with the historic centre that 

loudly speaks with the spirit of the ancient 

Venice, Umag today is the most important 

touristic resort of the north-western Istria 

which name has been particularly known 

thanks to a top-level sports event - the international 

ATP tennis tournament Croatia 

Open. Ride across the centre and visit the 

westernmost city tower, at the same time 

the oldest building which hosts the City 

Museum. If you continue further along the 

city walls, you’ll find yourself in front of 

the undone façade of the Parish church 

of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin 

Mary and that of St. Peregrine from the 

year 1760, built on the fundaments of a 

pre-existing one from the 14th century. 

Continue further and nearby the Parish 

church you’ll find the public city cistern 

from the 17th century and somewhat 

further towards east you’ll pass through 

the main town gate close to which there 

is the church of St. Roch from the 16th 

century built as a vote after the ending of 

the plague in the year 1507. The church 

of St. Roch has a precious painted wooden 

ceiling, the so called tabulat in which 

central part you won’t have difficulties to 

recognize the titular saint. If you continue 

towards south you’ll get to the church of 

St. Peregrine (15th century) at the sole 

seafront where, according to a tradition, 

at the beginning of the 4th century this 

saint has experienced his martyrdom. 

Tired by so many sensations, continue 

slowly back towards Katoro, the starting 

point of this Peregrinian adventure of the 

Umag area.

über diesen Hafen aus der Antike, Siedlung und 

Überreste der römischen Sommervilla, sowie die 

Funde, kann man in der 2. und 3. Etage im Stadtmuseum 

Umag besichtigen, das Sie erreichen, wenn 

Sie auf der Strecke über malerische Ortschaften 

Juricani, Radini und Lovrečica weiterfahren. 

Auf einer Halbinsel gelegen, um die Jahrhundertwende 

von der späten Antike ins frühere Mittelalter 

entstanden, mit dem Altstadtkern, in dem die 

venezianischen Spuren lebendig sind, ist Umag 

heute der zentrale Tourismusort des nordwestlichen 

Istrien. Der Name Umag hat sich dank einer 

Spitzensportveranstaltung dem internationalen 

ATP - Tennisturnier “Croatia Open” internationalen 

Ruf erworben. Machen Sie einen Abstecher 

ins Zentrum und besichtigen Sie den westlichsten 

Stadtturm zugleich das älteste Bauwerk, wo das 

Stadtmuseum untergebracht ist. Wenn Sie entlang 

der Stadtmauern weiterfahren, erreichen Sie die 

Pfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt mit unvollendeten 

Fassade und die Kirche des Hl. Pelegrinus aus dem 

Jahr 1769, erreichtet an Stelle einer älteren Kirche 

aus dem 14. Jh. Besichtigen Sie unbedingt die Kirche 

und die Skulpturen am Barockaltar, unter jenen 

die Skulptur des Hl. Pelegrinus - des Beschützers 

von Umag. Direkt an der Pfarrkirche Sie erreichen 

die öffentliche Stadtzisterne aus dem 17. Jh. und 

etwas weiter Richtung Osten fahren Sie durch das 

städtische Haupttor, unweit vom Tor befindet sich 

die kleine Kirche des Hl. Rochus aus dem 16. Jh. 

Die kleine Kirche wurde als Weihkirche nach einer 

Pestepidemie im Jahre 1507 erbaut. In der Kirche 

befindet sich eine wertvolle bemalte Holzdecke 

(sog. Tabulat), in dessen Zentrum man den Titularheiligen 

einfach erkennen wird. Wenn Sie weiter 

südlicher fahren, besichtigen Sie auf jeden Fall die 

Kirche des Hl. Pelegrinus (Anfang des 15. Jh.), die 

sich direkt am Meer befindet, wo, nach der Legende, 

dieser Beschützer von Umag Anfang des 4. Jh. 

sein Martyrium erlebte. Nach so vielen Ereignissen 

müde fahren Sie dann zurück nach Katoro - dem 

Ausgangspunkt dieser Pelegrinus-Umag Odyssee.

Classified with medium difficulty, the race is included in the calendar of the 

World Bicycle Federation (UCI) in the category 1. The trail passes through 

the legendary route of the Parenzana, the former narrow-gauge railway 

line which deeply penetrates into the Istrian peninsula and from Poreč to 

Trieste connects 33 Istrian cities, which today are located on the territory of 

even three states. Passing through magnificent rolling landscapes and lively 

Istrian vineyards, once it was named as the railway of the wine. As it was 

out of use for a long time, a tourist valorisation program of the Parenzana 

has been promoted 11 years ago, turning this track into the famous and 

recognizable bicycle marathon. 

Als ein Rennen von mittlerer Schwierigkeit klassifiziert, wurde es in den 

Kalender der Internationalen Fahrrad-Union (UCI) in der Kategorie 1 aufgenommen. 

Das Rennen wird auf der legendären Strecke der ehemaligen 

‘Parenzana’ gefahren, einer Schmalspur-Eisenbahn, die tief in das Hinterland 

der istrischen Halbinsel führte und von Poreč nach Triest 33 istrische Ortschaften 

verband, die sich heute in drei verschiedenen Staaten befinden. 

Obwohl die Linie schon seit langem außer Betrieb ist, wurde aufgrund der 

Tatsache, daß sie durch wunderschöne hügelige Landschaften und malerische 

istrische Weinberge führte - sie wurde auch Wein-Linie genannt - schon 

vor 11 Jahren ein Programm zur touristischen Erschließung gestartet. So hat 

sich die Strecke heutzutage in dieses bekannte und renommierte Marathon- 

Radrennen verwandelt.

From the past of Istria cycling 

The first cycling club in Istria was founded in the 

19th century. It was called Veloce club Polese 

(Pula’s fast club) which began its activities on the 

11th of November 1896. After founding the club, 

Pula fanatics started organising races from Pula 

to Pazin, and three years after its foundation, a 

cycling race track was opened. The track was 

333 meters long, with wooden tribunes which 

had 1200 seats. The Veloce club Polese was 

active until the beginning of the Second World 

War. Immediately after the end of the war, a cycling 

department at the Labour Sports Union was 

founded. In spite of all the difficulties they had at 

the time, in 1947 they organized a 150 km race 

known as Free Istria, and one year later a competition 

began which became the pride of Istrian 

cycling. It is an international junior stage race Kroz 

Istru (Through Istria) which since 2003 has been 

included in the World Cup calendar and from 2008 

in the calendar of Cup of Nations too.

Aus der Geschichte des istrischen 

Radfahrsports 

Der erste Radfahrklub in Istrien wurde bereits im 19. 

Jahrhundert gegründet. Es war dies der Veloce club 

Polese, welcher am 11. November 1896 das Licht 

der Welt erblickte. Nachdem sie den Klub gegründet 

hatten, haben die Enthusiasten von Pula damit begonnen, 

Rennen zu organisieren, welche von Pula 

bis Pazin gefahren wurden, und drei Jahre nach der 

Gründung wurde auch eine Radrennbahn eröffnet. 

Die Piste war 333 Meter lang und auf den hölzernen 

Tribünen war Platz für 1.200 Zuschauer. Der Veloce 

club Polese war bis zum Beginn des Zweiten Weltkriegs 

aktiv. Gleich nach dessen Ende wurde eine 

Radfahrabteilung beim Sport Arbeitsverein gegründet. 

Trotz aller Schwierigkeiten in diesem Zeitraum 

wurde im Jahr 1947 das Rennen Freies Istrien auf 

einer Länge von 150 Kilometern organisiert, und ein 

Jahr später wurde ein Wettbewerb aktiviert, welcher 

zum Stolz des istrischen Radfahrsports wurde. Es ist 

die Rede vom internationalen Junioretappenrennen 

Durch Istrien welches 2003 in den Kalender des 

Weltkups eingereicht wurde und im Jahr 2008 in den 

Kalender des Kups der Nationen.

Puddles and springs had special importance 

for village life which began

where you can visit about ten restored 

puddles and springs in the 

surroundings of Tinjan and Karojba. 

One of the most beautiful puddles on

Begin your ride in Kaštelir, a picturesque town 

inhabited since prehistory, which later became a 

Roman fortification and a medieval citadel. Continue 

towards Labinci, a place which has always 

been considered a rival to Kaštelir. You will find 

there the Gothic church of the St Trinity from the 

13th century with frescoes from the 15th century 

and the Parish church of St John the Baptist dating 

from the year 1736. In the sanctuary of the 

church, under the floor, there are remains of the 

once glorious Benedictine abbey of St Michael 

dating from the 9th century. Do you know where 

does this odd name, “under ground” come from? 

You will find the answer if you ride along the trail 

towards south when you come across the abbey 

we mentioned, known for the Glagolitic monks. If 

you pay attention to its remains, you will find an 

unusual construction of the monastery church 

with a sanctuary dug up in the ground, because 

of which it is referred to as St Michael “under 

ground”. However, if you like to visit a place literally 

located under ground, continue along the trail 

and you will find the cave called Baredine where 

you can explore the magic of Istrain life underground. 

Refresh yourself in one of the numerous 

agritourism spots along the trail and passing 

through Devići and Diklići ride back to Kaštelir.

den man seit jeher für Rivalen von Kaštelir hielt. 

Hier finden Sie eine kleine gotische Kirche der Hl. 

Dreifaltigkeit aus dem 13. Jh. mit Fresken aus dem 

15. Jh. und die Pfarrkirche des Hl. Johann aus dem 

Jahre 1736 in dessen Reliquienschrein Sie Teile einer 

früheren rühmreichen Benediktinerabtei des Hl. 

Michaelis unter der Erde aus dem 9. Jh. bewundern 

können. Sind Sie daran interessiert, woher diese 

seltsame Bezeichnung „unter der Erde“ stammt? 

Die Antwort ist einfach, fahren Sie etwas südlicher 

und dann erreichen Sie die genannte Abtei, bekannt 

für ihre Glagoliter-Mönche. Wenn Sie die Überreste 

etwas aufmerksamer anschauen, erkennen Sie eine 

ungewöhnliche Konstruktion der Klosterkirche, deren 

Reliquienschrein in die Erde begraben ist - so 

wurde es Hl. Michaelis „unter der Erde“ genannt“: 

Möchten Sie aber einen Platz wörtlich unter der Erde 

entdecken, fahren Sie weiter und dann erreichen Sie 

die bekannte Grotte Baredine, die Ihnen alle Zauber 

istrischer Unterwelt entdecken wird. Nach so vielen 

Eindrücken müde, stärken Sie sich in einer der vielen 

Gasthöfen und über Dević und Diklić fahren Sie zurück 

nach Kaštelir, wo Ihr Abenteuer begann. 

Von Teich zu Teich 

Einen besonderen Wert für das Dorfleben hatten 

in der Vergangenheit die Teiche und Quellen, 

welche nach der Erbauung des Wasserwerks 

und dem Absterben der Viehzucht zu verfallen 

begannen. Entlang dem gekennzeichneten Weg, 

von leichter Schwierigkeitsstufe, mit einer Länge 

von ca. dreißig Kilometern, können Sie etwa zehn 

erneuerte und eingerichtete Teiche und Quellen 

auf dem Gebiet von Tinjan und in der Umgebung 

von Karojba besichtigen. Einer der schönsten auf 

diesem Weg ist der Teich Pajićka.

Saline Bird Reserve 

Brijuni National Park 

In the deep southern cove of Veli Brijun 

behind Cape Gromače lies the bird reserve 

Saline. It stretches over an area of 7 hectares, 

characteristic for its swampy plants 

and three small lakes. Within the complex 

of the largest lake, secretly hidden by the 

reed lies a secluded small island with a 

straw-covered hut. This bird reserve developed 

on the remains of medieval salt 

pans used for the production of salt, which 

then again originate from ancient salt pans, 

traces of which are still visible today along 

the sea coast. The significance and importance 

of the salt pans can best be seen in 

documents stating that the profit of Brijuni’s 

salt sale is “an extraordinary profit for the 

Venetian Republic” or if you are planning 

to start your own salt production then you 

should “visit the salt pans Inzulae Brionorum 

that have been an example of top quality 

activities for centuries”. With the land-rec-

In einer tiefen südlichen Bucht der Insel Veliki Brijun 

befindet sich hinter der Landzunge Gromače das Vogelreservat 

Saline. Es erstreckt sich auf einer Fläche 

von 7 ha, auf der sich Sumpfgewächse und drei Teiche 

befinden. Im Rahmen des größten Teichs, dessen Umrisse 

und Geheimnisse durch Schilf verdeckt werden, 

gibt es eine kleine Insel mit einem Strohhäuschen, in 

dem sich Josip Broz Tito oft zurückzuziehen pflegte, 

um dem Vogelgezwitscher zu lauschen. Dieses Vogelreservat 

entstand auf den Überresten einer mittelalterlichen 

Meersaline zur Salzherstellung, die ursprünglich 

eine antike Saline war, deren Spuren auch 

heute noch an der Meeresküste sichtbar sind. Die Bedeutung 

und Wichtigkeit dieser Saline geht aus alten 

Schriften hervor, in denen es heißt, dass der Ertrag aus 

dem Verkauf des Salzes von Brioni eine “außerordentliche 

Einnahmequelle der Venezianischen Republik 

ist”, oder aber, wenn Sie eine Saline eröffnen wollen, 

dann müssen Sie “die Saline der Inzulae Brionorum 

besuchen, die seit Jahrhunderten exzellent arbeitet”.

May) while walking around the 

small lake or from a bird’’s eye 

view from several elevated observation

Bodenverbesserungsarbeiten aufgeschüttet 

und es bildeten sich zwei Teiche, zu denen 

sich im Jahr 1973 ein dritter gesellte. Von 

da an erhielt der See und die Umgebung 

ihre endgültige funktionelle Landschaftsform, 

und dieses Gebiet wurde zu einem 

Platz für heimische und Zugvögel, bzw. zu 

einem ornithologischen Park. Heute bietet 

der ornithologische Park Brioni ein phantastisches 

Bild und eine Idylle des Vogelgesangs, 

aber auch ein Zusammenleben für 

die unterschiedlichsten Vogelarten, die auf 

den Teichen schwimmen oder sich in der 

mediterranen Macchia und den Sumpfgewächsen 

verdeckt halten. Dieses auch für 

Istrien seltene und außergewöhnliche Gebiet 

kann man, außer während der Brutzeit 

(April und Mai), bei einem Spaziergang um 

den kleinen Teich, oder aus der Vogelperperspektive 

von einigen alleinstehenden 

oder in Baumkronen errichteten Hochständen 

genießen. Außer der Bekanntschaft mit 

den lebhaften Geschöpfen, ermöglicht der 

ornithologische Park Brioni es nur wenigen 

Glücklichen, sich dem Vogelgesang in der 

Strohhüte hinzugeben.

Walking trails: 

Semići - Brest - Semići 

The trail starts near the old school at Semići and 

leads us along the road, 10 minutes of straight 

road, and then climbs for about 15 minutes until it 

reaches the Pod Šćikovico lookout post. A resting 

point can be found here from where Lupoglav and 

its wide surroundings can be seen. The trail continues 

along the road and after 20 minutes turns right 

into a smaller trail which leads through the wood in 

the direction of the edge of the hill above Lupoglav 

and continues along this edge. The trail breaks out 

again onto the road that climbs down reaching 

the Nad Grad meadows and climbs up to the trail 

leading to Planik. Continue on this path for another 

ten minutes until you arrive at the crossroads and 

then turn left to a straight road, climbing down to 

the village known as Brest. Pass through the village 

along the pavement route until you reach the 

old school and then for about 200 m on the road, 

until you reach the Nad Krog. lookout post. From 

the lookout post you can see Vranja, Boljun and 

its wide surroundings and there is also a rest area 

there. The total length of the trail is about 7 km, and 

walking slowly you can complete it, with occasional 

rests, in an hour and 50 minutes. The return trail is 

the same as the outward trail. 

Spazierweg: Semići - Brest - Semići 

Der Weg beginnt bei der alten Schule im Ort Semići und 

führt uns über einen Wagenweg, etwa zehn Minuten lang 

über einen ebenen Teil und danach etwa 15 Minuten 

ansteigend bis zum Aussichtsturm Pod Šćikovico. Hier 

befindet sich ein eingerichteter Rastplatz von welchem 

sich ein Blick auf Lupoglav und die weitere Umgebung 

bietet. Der Weg setzt sich über den Wagenweg fort und 

nach 20 Minuten biegt man rechts auf einen kleinen Pfad 

durch das Wäldchen in Richtung des Bergsaumes oberhalb 

von Lupoglav ab und setzt sich entlang des Saumes 

fort. Der Pfad dringt erneut auf den Wagenweg, welcher 

bis zu den Wiesen, genannt Nad Grad, absinkt und dann 

bis zum Weg ansteigt, der bis Planik führt. Wir nehmen 

diesen Weg noch etwa zehn Minuten bis zur Kreuzug 

auf und biegen links auf den ebenen Teil ab und steigen 

dann in den Ort Brest ab. Durch den Ort geht man über 

die asphaltierte Straße bis zur alten Schule und danach 

ca. zweihundert Meter über den Wagenweg ganz bis 

zum Aussichtsturm Nad Krog. Der Aussichtsturm, von 

welchem aus sich ein Blich auf Vranja, Boljun und die 

weitere Umgebung erstreckt, ist ebenfalls als Raststätte 

eingerichtet. Die Gesamtlänge des Weges liegt bei etwa 

7 km und man legt ihn durch langsames Gehen und 

beiläufige Pausen in 1 Stunde und 50 Minuten hinter sich. 

Die Rückkehr führt entlang dem gleichen Weg. 

Istrian waterfalls: Zarečki krov 

Water prints can be find through almost every 

crack in the hills of central Istria. Many of 

them are only watercourses that were, during 

their geological past, deeply engraved, like the 

leaves of a closed book in the deposited layers 

of marl. Grey and blue marl umole, which in 

some parts are spherical and wavy, and on 

others rocky, emerge from low green vegetation, 

and are distinct details of central Istria’s 

landscape. Zarečki krov looks like a roof above 

the huge half cave in front of which a fairly 

large lake is situated that the people from 

Pazin, use as a bathing area during the summer 

months. Climbing routes can be found on 

the surrounding rocks, which are especially 

admired by climbers because of the great opportunities 

they give of climbing the „roof“. 

Somewhere above the Krov was the Jaz reservoir 

where water was gathered and drained 

away by means of special canals into the mill 

wheels and mortars downstream. The Zarečki 

krov differs in its height and in the length of 

its water channel during summer and autumn 

months when rains completely fill it, converting 

it into beautiful scenery.

Entlang fast jeder Furche, welche zwischen die Berge 

des mittleren Istriens eingeschnitten ist, führt eine Wasserspur. 

Viele davon sind nur Wildbachmulden, welche 

während der geologischen Vergangenheit vom Wasser, 

wie Blätter eines geschlossenes Buches bedeckt 

von Mergelschichten, tief eingeschnitten wurden. Die 

graubläulichen Mergelschichten „umole“, mancherorts 

rundlich und gewellt, woanders felsig, aus dem niedrigen 

Grün auftauchend, sind eindringliche Details der mittelistrischen 

Gegend. „Zarečki krov“ erinnert an ein Dach 

über der geräumigen Halbhöhle, vor welcher sich der 

etwas größere See erstreckt, welcher den Einwohnern 

Pazins im Sommer traditionell als Badeort dient. Entlang 

den umliegenden Felsen sind Bergsteigerwege eingerichtet, 

unter den Bergsteigern besonders geschätzt, 

da sie ausgezeichnete Möglichkeiten zum Klettern auf 

‘Decken’ bieten. Einst befand sich oberhalb des Daches 

die Akkumulation Jaz in welcher sich Wasser sammelte 

und durch einen speziellen Kanal auf die Laufräder der 

Mühlen und Mörser wasserabwärts geführt wurde. Der 

Wasserfall „Zarečki krov“ rühmt sich nicht so durch die 

Höhe, sondern mehr durch die Breite der Mulde, über 

welche das Wasser gelangt, welches ihn in den Frühjahrs- 

und Herbstregen zur Gänze ausfüllt und in eine 

wunderschöne Szene verwandelt.

The small village Malini spreads 

from the source of Studenac, 

close to the town of Plomin, all 

the way to Plomin Luka. Today the 

narrow and winding steep road 

is the shortest connection between 

these two parts. This area 

right by the sea, below Orlići hill 

in the mountainous area of Plomin, 

which descends steeply into 

Plomin Bay, was once the site of 

eighteen watermills. Onetime Malini 

was famous for large wooden 

water wheels, sound of watermills 

turning day and night during the 

time of milling, village wagons 

loaded with wheat and corn, 

drawn by horses or donkeys and 

hard working millers who were the 

very epitome of diligence, honesty 

and optimism.

Das kleine Dörfchen Malini erstreckt 

sich von der Quelle Studenac, 

unweit der Stadt Plomin, bis 

zum Zugang nach Plomin Luka, 

wobei eine schmale und kurvige 

steile Straße heute die kürzeste 

Verbindung zwischen diesen beiden 

Teilen ist. Einst gab es hier, 

unterhalb des Bergs Orlići auf 

dem Plominer Gebirgshang, der 

steil in den Plominer Fjord abfällt, 

unmittelbar am Meer achtzehn 

Wassermühlen. Das damalige Malini 

war gekennzeichnet durch das 

Rauschen der riesigen hölzernen 

Wasserräder, das Geräusch der 

Mühlen, die in der Saison des 

Mahlens Tag und Nacht in Betrieb 

waren, durch Dorfgespanne, voll 

mit Weizen und Mais, die von Pferden 

oder Eseln gezogen wurden 

sowie durch die fleißigen Müller, 

die Freude, Ehrlichkeit und Lebenoptimismus 

verkörperten.

Mills and mortars 

on the Bračana River 

The river Bračana enters Croatia on the northwestern 

part of Buzeština. A century ago, working 

looms were located in the mills on the river that 

were used for making clothes. This was the period 

when men and women’s clothing was traditionally 

made at home. This part of Buzeština had plenty 

of raw materials for making clothes, as the village’s 

farms had sheep, and together with the proximity 

of cattle-breeding in Ćićarija, was the most important 

source of income. First wool was cultivated, 

women would then spin it on a distaff and spindle 

and the resulting ball was taken for weaving. In 

the weaver’s workshop cloth would be woven as 

well as soft materials and women’s summer clothing. 

Thicker woven cloth would usually have been 

rolled in a mortar so as to be more compact. From 

this kind of cloth men’s clothing would be made 

as well as women’s winter clothing, bed clothing 

and covering sheets. The demand was great, and 

there was work for special weavers, mortarers and 

rollers. Mortarers did their work using mechanical 

gadgets, mortars, and water power. The mortaring 

process lasted 48 hours. 

Mühlen und Mörser 

am Fluss Bračana 

In den Mühlen am Fluss wirkten noch im vergangenen 

Jahrhundert Mörser zum Stampfen von Tüchern. 

Dies war eine Zeit, als die Kleidungsstücke von Männern 

und Frauen zuhause angefertigt wurden. Dieser 

Teil des Gebiets von Buzet hatte genügend Rohstoffe 

für die Anfertigung von Tüchern, da die ländlichen 

Haushalte Schafe hielten, und auch die Nähe der 

Viehzucht orientierten Ćićarija war die wichtigste 

Einnahmequelle. Die Wolle wurde bearbeitet, Frauen 

sponnen am Spinnrocken und der Spille Wolle 

und trugen die Knäuel zum Weben. In den Weberwohnungen 

wurde Leinen, leichtere Stoffe und Sommerkleidung 

für Frauen gewoben. Dicker gewobene 

Tücher wurden regelmäßig in den Mörsern gewalzt, 

damit diese kompakter wurden. Aus solchen Tüchern 

wurden alle Kleidungsstücke für Männer, Winterkleidung 

für Frauen und Bettwäsche, sowie Leintücher 

zum Zudecken angefertigt. Die Nachfrage war groß 

und daher hatten besondere Weber, Stampfer und 

Walzer Arbeit. Die Stampfer erledigten ihre Arbeit 

mithilfe von mechanischen Anlagen, den Mörsern, 

indem sie die Wasserkraft nutzten. Die Mörserbearbeitung 

dauerte 48 Stunden.

Castle of Pazin is the best preserved 

Istrian medieval fortress. It lies on a plateau by 

the sheer cliff above the abyss through which 

the Pazinčica river flows. For many centuries 

this castle was the main strategic point of the 

Austrian part of Istria, County of Pazin, against 

the Venetians, but also against Turkish attacks 

and rebellions of its subjects. For this reason 

Emperor Ferdinand I himself approved projects 

for the castles’s restoration and expenses related 

to this. The castle was also the centre of 

Habsburg rule in Istria. They inherited it from 

the Counts of Gorizia, and leased it to different 

noble families. An increasing amount of obligations 

and tributes for the peasants led to the 

great Peasants’ Revolt in 1571 where around 

2000 insurgents took part. The permanent exhibition 

of Istria’s Ethnographic Museum on 

the second floor of the castle contains a few 

individual units showing the traditional life of 

Istrian people. The items on show include traditional 

costumes, musical instruments and of the 

methods of creating fabrics, earthenware pots, 

kitchen furnishings are also on show together 

with a variety of accessories used in farming 

and in wine production. 

Das Kastell von Pazin ist eine der am 

besten bewahrten Festungen in Istrien. Es liegt auf 

einem Plateau neben einem steilen Fels oberhalb des 

Abgrunds, durch den der Pazinčica Fluß fließt. Jahre 

lang war Kastell von Pazin das Militärschutzzentrum 

des österreichischen Teils Istriens vor der Venezianischen 

Republik, manchmal sogar vor den Türken 

und Widerständen der Einheimischen. Aus diesem 

Grund finanzierte der Kaiser Ferdinand I Projekte für 

die Erneuerung des Kastells. Aus dem Kastell von Pazin 

regierten die Habsburger über das Istrien; sie bekamen 

es von den Grafen von Gorizia aufgrund eines Erbvertrags 

und gaben es hauptsächlich verschiedenen adeligen 

Familien in Pacht. Zahlreiche Verpflichtungen und 

große Abgaben führten 1571 zum großen Bauernaufstand, 

an dem etwa 2 000 Menschen teilnahmen. 

Die ständige Aufstellung des Ethnographischen Museums 

Istriens im zweiten Stock des Festungstheaters 

beinhaltet einige arteigene Gesamtheiten, welche 

das traditionelle Leben des istrischen Volkes darstellen. 

Es sind Trachten und Musikinstrumente ausgestellt, 

die Art der Anfertigung von Stoffen, Erdtöpfen und die 

Kochausstattung wird dargestellt und es sind auch verschiedene 

Hilfsmittel aus der Landwirtschaft und der 

Weinherstellung ausgestellt. 

Bartulja, Žminj, 29.08. 

The most popular today’s folk festivity in Istria 

used to be celebrated on St. Bartholomew’s 

Day on 24 August, but in time people started 

gathering the last Saturday in August to 

meet in large numbers. Nevertheless, St. Bartholomew’s 

Day is still celebrated with a mass 

held in the church of the saint, right at the 

entrance to Žminj. The point of Bartulja, both 

in the past and today, is actually the gathering 

of people from Žminj in their native place. 

Older people recall that just before Bartulja 

they would clean their house every day after 

the harvest and after working in the field so 

that it would look nice and ready for their relatives 

and guests. 

Fisherman’s festival

The magical sunset at Fažana’s waterfront becomes 

even more fascinating with the chants 

of Istrian harmony singing groups mixing with 

the soft melodies of fishermen while diligently 

making their nets, and with the sweet smell 

of pilchard… 

Das Žminer Fest „Bartulja“, heute das bekannteste 

und größte Volksfest in Istrien, hat eine mindestens 

hundertjährige Tradition, doch wahrscheinlich 

reicht es noch viel weiter in die Vergangenheit hinein. 

Früher wurde es zum Tage des Hl. Bartolommeo, am 24. 

August gefeiert, aber seit Jahren haben die Menschen 

damit begonnen, sich am letzten Samstag im August zu 

versammeln, um an diesem Tage in möglichst großer 

Zahl zusammen zu sein. Dennoch findet am Bartolommeo-Tag 

auch heute noch eine Messe in der Kirche 

dieses Heiligen, unmittelbar am Eingang von Žminj statt. 

Das Wesen eines jeden „Bartulja“ ist, damals wie heute, 

eigentlich die Zusammenkunft der Žminjer an ihrem Geburtsort. 

Ältere Einwohner erinnern sich noch, dass vor 

„Bartulja“ jeden Tag, nach der Ernte und der Arbeit auf 

dem Feld, das Haus in Ordnung gebracht wurde, damit 

die Gastgeber Verwandte und Gäste in einem ordentlichen 

Haus empfangen konnte.

Den Zauber des Sonnenuntergangs an der Riva von 

Fažana ergänzt der Gesang der istrischen a cappella 

Gruppen, begleitet von Gesprächen der Fischer von 

Fažana, während sie fleißig Netze flechten, und an der 

Riva verbreitet sich der Duft des gegrillten blauen kleinen 

Fisches, der Sardelle.
