The Chapel of St. Mary Formoza Pula
The small chapel with its cross-shaped ground-plan is just
a small part that remains from the old Basilica of St. Mary
Formoza that was given the name Admirable because of
its beauty and monumentality. This luxurious monument,
built in the 6th century was the idea of bishop Maximianus
of Ravenna (498.-556.), who was born in Veštar, near
Rovinj. During the ten-day Venetian robbery of Pula in
1243, the Basilica was damaged in a fire and because of
its location in swampy medieval Pula, it was subsequently
named del canneto (made of reed). Formoza’s marble
pillars were taken to Venice in 1547 and used for the
construction of the Libreria S. Marco’ library’s stairs, and
partly for the hall Delle quattro porte in the Doge’s Palace
too. The remains of the rocky material were used in 1697
for the reconstruction of Communal Palace at Forum.
However, only the southern chapel, part of the northern
perimeter wall with signs of a side entrance and circular
“pastofories” have been conserved from the remains of
the sacral complex. The Basilica of St. Mary Formoza was
the greatest construction project and the highest investment
of late antique Pula. Together with the luxurious
Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč, Formoza is the most important
monument of sacral art in Croatia dating back to the
times of the Justinian renewal of the Empire.
Die Kapelle der Hl. Maria Formosa Pula
Die kleine Kapelle von kreuzförmigem Grundriss ist nur
ein kleiner bewahrter Teil der einstigen Basilika der Hl.
Maria Formosa, welche die Bezeichnung Krasna (Bezaubernde)
aufgrund ihrer Schönheit und Monumentalität
erhalten hat. Das prachtvolle Gebäude ließ im 6. Jahrhundert
der Bischof von Ravena Maximilian (498. - 556.),
geboren in Veštro neben Rovinj, erbauen. In der Zeit der
venezianischen zehntägigen Plünderung von Pula im
Jahr 1243 verunglückte sie im Feuer und wurde danach
aufgrund ihrer Lage im sumpfigen mittelalterlichen Pula
„del canneto“ (aus Schilf) ernannt. Marmorsäulen von
Formosa werden im Jahr 1547 nach Venedig transportiert
und bei der Erbauung des Treppenhauses der Bibliothek
Libreria S. Marco verwendet, und teilweise auch
im Saal Delle quatro porte im Dogenpalast. Das restliche
steinerne Material wird im Jahr 1697 für die Erneuerung
des Gemeindepalasts am Forum verwendet. Vom großen
sakralen Komplex sind nur die südliche Kapelle und ein
Teil der nördlichen perimetralen Mauer mit Andeutung
eines lateralen Eingangs und zyklischen Pastoforien erhalten.
Die Basilika der Hl. Maria Formosa war das größte
Bauunternehmen und die umfangreichste Investition des
spätantiken Pulas. Neben der prachtvollen Basilika des
Euphrat in Poreč ist Formosa das bedeutendste Denkmal
der sakralen Kunst auf kroatischem Boden aus der Zeit
von Justinus` Erneuerung des Königreichs.
Roč lies 10 km east of Buzet. This hilltop town
surrounded by defensive walls was mentioned as
early as 1064. Founded as an Illyirian settlement,
it grew into a Roman castrum. In the Middle Ages,
it transformed into a fortified castle, separated by
walls and defensive towers and Small and Large
Gate. During the 15th and the 16th century, Roč
was the centre of Croatian literacy, editorship,
and printing based on the oldest Slavic Glagolitic
Alphabet.
Črni Grad and Beli Grad
On the slopes of Ćićarija, right above Roč field,
lie the ancient fortresses Črni Grad and Beli Grad.
These forgotten fortresses stand on two elevations,
divided by a deep and narrow gorge. Črni
Grad, built of brown and black stone which easily
and rapidly warms up, lies on the top of the hill
of the same name, at a height of 562 metres.
Beli Grad, built of white limestone, lies somewhat
to the east, on the other side of the gorge, on
Semić hill. Devotees of historic structures who
set out towards Lanišće will surely be surprised
by the beauty of landscape, magnificent views,
as well as impressive remains testifying to the
characteristic history.
Roč
Gegründet als illyrische Siedlung, entwächst es in
ein römisches Castrum und in der Mitte des Mittelalters
verwandelt es sich in eine befestigte Burg,
abgeschottet durch Mauern mit Abwehrtürmen, sowie
dem Großen und dem Kleinen Tor. Während des
15. und 16. Jahrhunderts war Roč das Zentrum des
kroatischen Schrifttums, Verlags- und Druckwesens,
begründet auf der ältesten slawischen Schrift, der
Glagoljica.
Črni Grad und Beli Grad
An den Hängen des Gebiets Ćićarija, direkt oberhalb
von Ročko Polje, befinden sich die alten Festungen
Črni Grad und Beli Grad. Die heute in Vergessenheit
geratenen Festungen liegen auf zwei durch tiefe und
enge Schluchten geteilte Anhöhen. Črni Grad wurde
aus braunen und schwarzen Felssteinen errichtet,
die sich in der Sonne leicht und schnell erhitzen und
befindet sich auf der Spitze eines gleichnamigen 562
Meter hohen Hügels. Beli Grad, erbaut aus weißem
Kalkstein, befindet sich etwas östlicher auf der anderen
Seite der Schlucht, auf dem Hügel Semić. Liebhaber
von Altertümern, die sich in Richtung Lanišće
begeben, werden von der landschaftlichen Schönheit,
dem weiten Blick sowie den beeindruckenden
Ruinen, die von einer spezifischen Vergangenheit
zeugen, sicherlich verwundert sein.
