was man glaubt, mit Spiritualität.
Festhalten dessen, was eigentlich schon passiert ist.
Die Vergangenheit ist vollendet. Umso wichtiger wurde
Christoph Schlingensief die Gründung des Operndorfs
als soziale Plastik und lebendiger, weiterwachsender
Organismus, der ja auch bis heute lebt.
JN: Welche Werke werden im Mittelpunkt der Ausstellung
stehen?
Schlingensiefs überbordender Bildmacht gemessen, an
believer, someone who wrangled with his faith and
called it into question again and again. I suspect that the
theme of staging things can be traced back to the period
when he served as an altar boy – when he observed the
incomprehensible ornaments and rituals and banns of
the Catholic Church: that strongly theatrical element
that is supposed to astonish you and make a believer
of you. He called that into question throughout his
life and seemed nevertheless to find it simultaneously
wonderful. And thus for our purposes it is not necessary
to underscore faith and Catholicism as specific themes.
To both these elements, which he was instilled with from
birth, one can add – in addition to “belief” – also “film”
and thus (I say this with some certain reservations)
“death”. For film as a medium, much as the medium of
photography, always reveals traces of the melancholy
of things past: by capturing what has actually already
transpired. The past is finished. The founding of the
Opera Village Africa as a social sculpture and a living,
continually growing organism became more and more
important to him. And it’s still alive today.
JN: What works are you placing the central focus on at
the exhibition?
ACG: We will be focusing on film since, the more closely
one looks at his works, the more clearly they reveal
the recurrent cinematic metaphors – something that
Schlingensief had assimilated from Nekes and Godard:
cinematic metaphors that he applied to mecha nisms,
and vice-versa. In formal terms, his theatre was very
cinematic. Already Castorf used videos as part of his
stage installations. But the excessive use of moving
pictures really began with Christoph Schlingensief. And
everyone who stages operas today will be measured
by Schlingensief’s exuberant pictorial power, by his
projections, and by those endlessly manifold, overlapping
film images. That’s why film, in addition to a
number of installations, is central to the exhibition.
Broadly speaking, more works by Christoph Schlingensief
will be shown at this one exhibition than ever before,
and of course I find that wonderful.
JN: Thank you for the conversation!
JN: Vielen Dank für das Gespräch!
