BUCERIUS/WHU MASTER OF LAW AND BUSINESS
JOACHIM HERZ PROGRAM COURSES
Studium Generale
Master’s Thesis Preparation Course
Professor Clifford Larsen
Professor Dr. Matthias Meyer
Content: The Studium Generale, a mandatory
part of the Master of Law and Business
Program, consists of classes, spread
throughout the academic year, that take a
variety of forms: discussions of topics for
which reading materials have been distributed
in advance, lectures open to MLB,
LL.B., and International Exchange students
at the Bucerius Law School, trips in and
around Hamburg to places of interest to
the MLB community and, most important,
the presentations by the MLB students of
their home countries. By integrating into
the Program the great diversity in cultural
and legal backgrounds of the MLB students,
the Studium Generale aims to allow students
to become more aware of various
points of view on matters of broad interest
and thereby to foster better cognizance of
one’s own background, opinions and perspectives.
Credits: 2 ECTS
Open to: MLB students
Location: U.56 Linklaters Lecture Room
Content: This course has two aims. Firstly,
it informs the students about the requirements
to be observed regarding the
Master’s Thesis (e.g. deadlines, word count,
and the no-plagiarism rule of Bucerius/
WHU). Secondly, it assists students in writing
their thesis. Moreover, in workshop format
the substantive and formal issues to be
observed when writing an academic thesis
are discussed and exercises are provided.
Thus, students learn how to find a suitable
topic and how to develop and structure
the discussion of a hypothesis. Moreover,
different methodology is presented and
assistance is given to students to find the
methodology they want to apply. During
this part of the course, the prominent function
of footnotes is taught and the no-plagiarism
rule of Bucerius/WHU is repeated by
way of examples. A specimen of the outer
structure of a thesis is distributed and the
best practice arrangement and presentation
of the text is discussed. Students get
training in academic writing and information
on how to improve their English writing.
Throughout the course students will be
provided with several research and writing
tasks.
