died in concentration camps. It is poignant to read, in Franz Alt’s reminiscences,<br />
that on his first return to Vienna, in 1958, he felt familiar only in the Zentralfriedhof,<br />
Vienna’s central cemetery. But his upbringing had indelibly stamped him as<br />
the epitome of what cultured Viennese would like to be. His melodious German<br />
reminded one of Hofmannsthal and Schnitzler, his literary and artistic interests<br />
were wide-ranging, and his two major hobbies were hiking and music (he played<br />
violin and viola in several chamber music groups, well into his nineties). Gradually,<br />
the rift that had been caused by the Anschluss narrowed. Franz Alt greatly<br />
appreciated his invitations to the Berlin ICM in 1998, by the German Mathematical<br />
Association, and to the Congress of Austrian Mathematicians in 2001. His<br />
former school, the Stubenbastei Gymnasium, named a prize after him. In 2007,<br />
Franz Alt received, from the hands of Austria’s chancellor Gusenbauer, the Ehrenkreuz<br />
für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse, the highest distinction for science<br />
and art in Austria.<br />
