THE BAT
Operetta in 3 acts – RV 503
Libretto: Richard Genée
after the comedy “Le Réveillon”
by Ludovic Halévy and Henri Meilhac
PLOT
Champagne is to blame for the fact that the honou-
-

also with much ridicule and derision. A small town
in the vicinity of Vienna is turned upside down at
carnival time: “good, honest” citizens enjoy themselves
and dress up in masks. Instead of beginning a prison
sentence, the rentier Eisenstein tries his hand at
having affairs, and elegant “society” pokes fun at a
bored Russian prince – without his being aware of
pe
from the present. Then Eisenstein’s wife Rosalinde
appears in disguise and ingeniously exposes the whole
game of hide-and-seek, whilst her lover from the past

an old score, a carnival joke between the friends
Eisenstein and Dr. Falke, is supposed to be settled
through further ludicrous events. To crown it all, a

is not only the prison guard who is totally drunk ...

PLACE AND TIME OF THE PLOT
A bathing resort near a large town
First performance: 5 April 1874, Vienna,
Theater an der Wien
duration: c. 2.5 hours
THE SPECIAL FEATURES OF THIS VOLUME
lie in the publication of a correct reading. Through
the discovery of a reliably correct copyist’s copy of
the score (in the Archive of the Mecklenburg State
Theatre in Schwerin), including the missing auto-

No. 1 of the 2nd act), it has been possible to produce
a correct reading and critical revision of all parts of

in the phrasing, dynamic markings and tempo indications,
as well as corrections in the vocal parts, melodic
development and instrumentation, could be made
on the basis of new source discoveries. In addition,
numerous incorrect passages in the vocal and prose
text perpetuated over the years have been corrected.
As a whole, a new picture of this operetta emerges,
presenting a less well-rounded work, but revealing
more sharp-edged musical contours.
