THE QUEEN’S LACE HANDKERCHIEF
Operetta in 3 acts – RV 508A/B/C
Libretto: Heinrich Bohrmann, Richard Genée,
Julius Rosen and O.F. Berg
PLOT
A cloak-and-dagger comedy could not be more
muddled or long-winded than this libretto about a
royal confusion. Amorous banter, disguises and preposterous
situations play less the main roles than the
theme of the contemptuous retention of power. Political
power as the be all and end all. The tyranny can,
after all, only be broken after unimaginable trials and
tribulations through true love. Count Villalobos is
prime minister of the country and at the same time,
guardian of the king, just 19 years old. In order to
preserve his power for as long as possible, Villalobos
devotes all his energies to ensuring that the young
king neglects his duties and is distracted by the joys
of life – through eating, drinking and constantly changing
amorous adventures. His opponents have their
work cut out to prevail against this: the clever queen,
just 17 years old, and the mocking, poetic free spirit
Cervantes. The lace handkerchief with the inscription
“A queen loves you, but you are no king” turns into
a therapeutic piece of incriminating evidence, passes
through many hands, deprives Villalobos of power
