A Tour of Neuss
Magnificent churches, narrow streets and alleys, stormed
city walls and fortified towers, oases of peace
and city squares full of life.
Quirinus Basilica (1209-1230) The city´s landmark
is one of the most significant late Romanesque
churches on the lower Rhine.
City fortification (13 th /14 th cent.) The Obertor (Up-
per Gate), the Windmühlenturm (Windmill Tower)
and the Blutturm (Blood Tower) are particularly impressive
signs of the city´s past.
Oldest house in Neuss (1571) Well-preserved half-
timbered house, opposite one of the biggest half-timbered
houses (1712) on the Lower Rhine.
„Em Schwatte Päd“ (1604) Renaissance town house
built in brick, today an inn.
Vogthaus (Church Advocate´s House) (1597) Former
official residence of the representative of the
Archbishop, today an inn. The gable houses a glockenspiel
with figures of the riflemen regiment (daily
at 11 a.m., 3 p.m., 5 p.m.)
Zeughaus (armory) (17 th century) Former church and
monastery of the Franciscan Observants. In the 19 th
century an armory; today a venue for concerts.
Church art In addition to the Quirinus Minster, there
are many other churches of unique artistic interest in
Neuss. Dreikönigenkirche (Church of the Epiphany)
has wonderfully colourful stained glass windows, designed
by Johan Thorn Prikker (1919).
St Stephen’s has windows by Eduard Steinle (1864),
St. Konrad’s glass by Gottfried Böhm(1955), Marienkirche
(St. Mary’s) 21 windows by Emil Wachter (1985-
1990). St. Mary’s Chapel in the Collegium
Marianum was created as a complete work of art by
Heinz Mack in 1984, Heilig Geist (Church of the Holy
Ghost) in its turn by Georg Ettl (1999). Christuskirche,
designed by architect Moritz Korn in 1906 in neo-
romantic style influenced the style of the whole quarter
in which it was built.
Marketplace The town hall overlooks the central
square which, to this day, is alive with the hustle and
bustle of various markets. While the many cafés
surrounding it have brought an urbane flair to the
scene, the children can enjoy the experimental art. A
fountain by Elmar Hillebrand is decorated with scenes
from the city´s past. The square is most
famous for its role during the Riflemen´s Festival, as
it is here that the ”King“ takes the salute.
