Arie
Teodosio
aber der weise Verstand sieht deine Täuschung voraus;
Aria
Teodosio
You want love to be tyrannous, I know.
After my freedom, you take away my pride,
But sapient reason sees through your deceit and brings
about your downfall.
Chor
Hirten
Choir
Shepherd
No one, in despair,
shall give himself to grief,
even when it is so mighty
that it threatens to destroy us.
For when dark clouds encumber our hearts
and horrendous storms threaten earth,
then the sun pours down more brilliantly
her radiant beams.
After the harsh frost of bleak winter, spring adorns the
fields with flowers.
Chor
Nymphen und Hiren
Choir
Nymphs and Shepherds
Weh, hartes Schicksal, ruchlos und grausam!
Ungerechte Sterne, hartherziger Himmel!
Der sterbliche Mensch baue nie
auf flüchtiges, zerbrechliches Glück
das schnell entflieht; wie oft ist
auf großen Aufstieg der Abgrund nahe.
Ah, bitter chance! Evil and cruel fate!
Wrongful stars, callous skies!
Mere mortals should not rely
on frail and fleeting pleasures
that quickly slip away; the higher we climb,
the higher we may fall.
