dramatically, while the visitor can wander round the streets of this both ancient and modern city,

Those born in the autumn are said to be warm, melancholic
and balanced. We all have a cinematographic – or
literary – picture of the season: a city that gradually takes
on light brown and grey hues, the first umbrellas, the
breeze that grows more chill every day … Autumn was
made for strolling round the city, doing a little shopping
and taking in a show. And what is more, autumn, in a
Mediterranean city like Palma, is a kindly, warm autumn.
In this, the latest, number of Palma 365, we would like to
pay special attention to the shopping areas of our city, to
retailing: these months, from idle October up to frantic,
generous Christmas should really be months spent in the
street. Palma has an astonishing range of things to offer
in this respect, as in all others, and our shopping opportunities
are the best possible letter of introduction for the
visitor: the best shops, and the best service. Everything
possible to test the most demanding of consumers.
But that is not all: the theatre listings offer several highly
interesting performances of locally produced works.
Theatre on the island continues to be of the highest standards
and is beginning to consolidate a tradition of
nation-wide prestige. There are also many really attractive
concerts, such as the Mallorca Music Festival, an
international project that promises to become a firm fixture,
due to its high quality; there are to be various challenging,
even dazzling exhibitions; a sporting calendar of
competition at the highest level. With no time to get
bored, the citizens of Palma regard autumn as a season of
transition full of nuances – and entertainment.
However, Palma 365’s watchword is our concern for the
visitor. To be useful to them, to help them, to help make
sure their stay is packed with fun and entertainment, with
everything possible to enrich it. That is why we keep on
offering up the best information about the city’s heritage
and a suggested tour on foot with a legendary theme. We
are sure that in this way we can help turn autumn in the

Veranstaltung anzusehen. Und dazu ist der Herbst in einer
mediterranen Stadt wie Palma auch noch mild und lau. Ein

In dieser Ausgabe von Palma 365, wollen wir den Einkaufsstrassen
unserer Stadt besondere Aufmerksamkeit
schenken: diese Monate, vom gemächlichen Oktober bis
zur frenetischen und großzügigen Weihnacht, sind Monate
der Einkaufsbummel. Palma bietet, wie in allen Bereichen,
ein ausgezeichnetes Angebot und unser Handel ist
unsere beste Visitenkarte für den Besucher.
Aber das ist nicht alles: der Theaterkalender bietet uns verschiedene
Aufführungen sehr interessanter Eigenproduktionen.
Das Theaterniveau der Insel ist nach wie vor sehr
hoch und gewinnt langsam ein Prestige nationalen Charakters.
Auch die Veranstaltungen musikalischen Charakters
sind höchst attraktiv, wie zum Beispiel das Festival
Musica Mallorca, ein internationals Projekt klassischer
Musik das verspricht sich durch seine hohe Qualität zu
konsolidieren; verschiedene mutige und erstaunliche Ausstellungen;
und ein Sportkalender auf höchster Ebene.

SEIGNEURIAL WITH SOPHISTICATED GOODS IN THE SHOP WINDOWS
Plaça Joan Carles I serves as the hub for this avenue that is in perfect harmony with its buildings of historicist style, and prides itself on being
a high class area for shopping. There is a marked profusion of shoe shops that display the latest trends in fantastic, colourful shop windows.
Avinguda Jaume III is perfectly straight and goes up a slight slope to Passeig de Mallorca, where nowadays the bed of the stream Sa Riera
runs. All its buildings have arched porticos and very similar façades. The ground floors are completely devoted to commercial establishments,
with a great variety of things on show, including a great many shoe shops selling very exclusive models, especially for women. There are
also a goodly number of shops stocking the latest fashions, jewellers’ and watch sellers’, a well known make of fountain pens, lingerie with
daring styles for both men and women, photographic and electrical goods shops, tobacconists’, a newsagent’s that also sells books, an art
gallery, a cake shop and among other things an establishment that sells wigs and hairpieces. In addition, a famous department store has a
branch there. There are some interesting shopping streets that cross the avenue, Bonaire and Baró Santa Maria del Sepulcre in particular,
that are themselves interconnected by narrow passages. Among what is available there, the fabulous decoration boutiques with their elegant,
chic designs, as well as a large book shop with books in several different languages. On the other side of the avenue, there are also
benchmark establishments for decoration of the home, particularly in Calle Protectora and in Berenguer de Tornamira. All along the avenue
there are cafés and cafeterias with terraces, take away food, and ice cream parlours proffering delicious combinations to the passer-by.

Der leicht ansteigende geradlinige Verlauf der Avinguda Jaume III führt zum Passeig de Mallorca, wo sich heute das Flussbett des Sturzbachs
Sa Riera befindet. All seine Gebäude haben Portikum-Bögen und ebensolche Fassaden. Die Erdgeschosse sind ausschließlich den Ladenlokalen
gewidmet, mit einer grossen Anzahl von hauptsächlich Damen-Schuhgeschäften. Stark vertreten sind aber auch Modegeschäfte generell,
Schmuck- und Uhrenläden, eine sehr bekannte Füllermarke, Dessousläden mit gewagten Kreationen für Sie und Ihn, Fotografie- und
Elektronik-Geschäfte, Tabakläden, eine Buchhandlung mit Tagespresse, eine Kunstgalerie, ein Konditor und unter anderem ein Perückengeschäft.
Auch befindet sich hier eine Filiale eines sehr berühmten Warenhauses.
Die Avenida kreuzen einige interessante Einkaufsstrassen, besonders Bonaire und Baró Santa Maria del Sepulcre, die unter einander durch
enge Passagen verbunden sind. Zu ihrem Angebot gehören fantastische Einrichtungsgeschäfte mit elegantem Design und eine große Buchhandlung
mit Ausgaben in verschiedenen Sprachen. Auf der anderen Seite der Avenida liegen weitere Referenz-Geschäfte für den Einrichtungssektor,
besonders in der Calle Protectora und in Berenguer de Tornamira. Überall entlang der Avenida liegen Bars und Cafeterias mit
Terassen, Essen zum Mitnehmen und Eisdielen.

A ROAD TO JOIN
THE OLD CITY WITH
THE ‘ENSANCHE’
This avenue was built with the idea of
creating a road joining the old city and
the western part of the newly extended
city or ‘ensanche’. The plans were
drawn up by Gabriel Alomar Esteve
and approved in 1943.
The flats of the buildings that line the
street, with their practically identical
façades and characteristic colonnades,
were taken up by comfortably off
families, leaving the ground floors for
retail and business establishments.
This distribution has changed a little
over time and nowadays a number of
businesses have settled into the upper
floors too.
Description
It starts in Plaça Joan Carles I and ends
in Passeig de Mallorca. Pedestrians
and traffic.

Familien der Oberschicht bewohnt,
wobei die Erdgeschosse dem Handel

hat sich mit der Zeit verändert
und heute befinden sich in den oberen
Geschossen ebenfalls Unternehmen.

AN OPEN AIR SHOPPING CENTRE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
Calle San Miquel and the surrounding area offer a huge range of attractive propositions as
the extensive variety of shops is inseparable from pleasant bars and unique historical buildings.
There are always large numbers of buskers, mime artists, acrobats, landscape and portrait
painters 'open for business’.
Pedestrianised for most of its length, Calle Sant Miquel joins two of the city’s nerve centres:
Plaça Major and Avinguda Comte de Sallent. It starts just after the colonnade on one side
of the square, and in the street there are a large number of shops of all sorts, including opticians’,
chemists’ and shops selling shoes (children’s shoes too), perfume, lingerie, exclusive
labels of men’s and women’s fashion, young fashion, bedclothes and tablecloths, wedding
dresses, wools and embroidered goods, jewellery, clocks and watches, costume jewellery, as
well as gift and decoration shops.
There are still long established shops selling espadrilles and baskets, an establishment
founded in 1918 that sells all kinds of cloth, and other businesses with a long tradition: a
bookshop specialising in old maps and engravings of Mallorca (at the beginning of the
street), and a shop dealing in material for fine art (near the Avinguda Comte de Sallent).
A number of its shops are concentrated in the open air shopping centre “Los Geranis”
about half way down the street. For fresh foodstuffs, this area cannot be bettered, connected
as it is to Plaça Olivar, where there is a major municipal market. There is also a delicatessen,
ice cream parlours, sophisticated restaurants, and cafés with outside tables.

Die Calle Sant Miquel und ihre Umgebung beherbergen ein höchst interessantes Angebot
mit vielen Geschäften und netten Terrassen und einigen bemerkenswerten Monumenten.
Auch wird sie von Strassenmusikanten, Pantomimen, Jongleuren, Landschafts- und Portraitmalern
bevölkert.
Zum größten Teil Fußgängerzone, verbindet Sant Miquel zwei neuralgische Punkte der
Stadt: die Placa Major und die Avinguda Comte de Sallent. Sie beginnt an einer Seite des
Platzes und ist voller Schuhgeschäfte (auch für Kinder), Parfümerien, Kurzwaren, Damenund
Herrenmode exklusiver Marken, Jugendmode, Hausbekleidung, Hochzeitsmode, Wolle
und Stickwaren, Schmuck und Uhren, Modeschmuck, Optiker, Apotheken, Geschenkartikel
und Dekoration.
Auch existieren hier noch die alten Hanfschuhwerkstätten, ein 1918 gegründetes Warenhaus
mit allen Arten von Textilien und andere Unternehmen mit sehr langer Tradition: eine
Buchhandlung, die sich auf alten Landkarten und Radierungen Mallorkas spezialisiert hat
(am Anfang der Strasse) und das Geschäft mit Kunstmaterialien (zu den Avenidas hin).
Ein Teil des Angebots ist im Einkaufszentrum “Los Geranis”, unter freiem Himmel und auf
der Mitte des Strassenverlaufs, konzentriert. Was die Gastronomie angeht ist diese Zone
schwer zu überbieten, da sie mit der Placa de l’Olivar verbunden ist, an dem sich ein bedeutender
städtischer Markt befindet. Hier existieren auch Delikatessengeschäfte, Eisdielen,
exquisite Restaurants und Cafeterien mit Terrasse.

A SHOPPING STREET
COMBINED WITH HISTORIC
BUILDINGS
Along the street there are a number
of admirable historic buildings, such
as the Museu d’Art Espanyol Contemporani.
(Museum of Contemporary
Spanish Art). The building dates back
to the 17th century, and has a magnificent
mosaic floor in the hall that is
the work of Lluis Bru Salelles. It also
has a marvellous staircase of white
marble with wrought iron banisters.
Further down the street is Sant Miquel
church, built on the plot where,
according to legend, Jaume I held the
first mass after his conquest of Madina
Mayurka. A little further on is the
church and cloister of Sant Antoniet,
built between 1729 and 1768 by the
Antonian order. Every Christmas a
lovely crib scene is set up in its spectacular
cloisters; admission is free.

BEWUNDERNSWERTEN
MONUMENTEN
Entlang der Strasse sehen wir verschiedene
Monumente, wie das Museu
d’Art Espanyol Contemporani. Das
Gebäude stammt aus dem 17. Jh. und
hat einen wunderschönen Mosaikfußboden
im Vestibül, entworfen von
Lluis Bru Salelles, sowie eine weiße
Marmortreppe mit einem schmiedeeisernen
Geländer. Etwas weiter liegt
die Kirche von Sant Miquel, die auf
der Stelle steht, wo nach der Überlieferung
die erste Messe nach der Eroberung
der Madina Mayurga durch
Jaume I gehalten wurde. Dahinter die
Kirche und das Kloster von Sant Antoniet,
erbaut zwischen 1729 und 1768
von den Antonius Patern. In seinem
Kreuzgang wird jede Weihnacht eine
wunderschöne Krippe aufgebaut.

A GREAT MARKET AND MUCH MORE BESIDES
The Olivar Market, opened in 1951, is in the heart of Palma. It is the oldest market in the city. Smells, flavours and colours welcome us to a
total of 144 stalls, including butchers, fishmongers, greengrocers, bakers, florists, etc. that offer themselves up to visitors to enjoy with all their
five senses. The market has recently been reformed. The building and its internal layout have been completely renovated and adapted to modern
day requirements to make shopping and walking round easier. The market also has an underground car park, which is free to customers,
and a children’s play area. The market is in the middle of a shopping area bordered by c/ Sant Miquel and Avinguda Alexandre Rosselló: nevertheless,
this maze of streets has its own particular character, and here one can find shops of ladies fashion, the occasional amusement arcade,
several highly fashionable restaurants serving Spanish bar snacks and tapas. There is even a very traditional shop selling coffee.

Der Mercat de l´Olivar, der 1951 eingerichtet wurde, befindet sich mitten im Zentrum von Palma. Es ist der älteste Markt der Stadt. Gerüche,
Geschmäcker und Farben begrüssen uns bei unserem Eintritt in das Marktgelände, in dem sich insgesamt 144 Stände befinden, unter
denen Metzger, Fischhändler, Obst- und Gemüsestände, Bäcker, Blumenhändler und noch viele mehr vertreten sind, die dem Besucher eine
Fülle an Waren bieten, die mit allen fünf Sinnen genossen werden. Erst kürzlich wurde dieser Markt von Grund auf renoviert. Der Markt hat
auch eine Tiefgarage, die den Besuchern gratis zur Verfügung steht und einen eigenen Spielbereich für Kinder. Er befindet sich inmitten der
Einkaufsgegend im Bereich der Strassen Sant Miquel und Avda. Alexandre Rosselló, was ihm ein ganz eigenes Flair verleiht und in den Hallen
finden sich neben den Marktständen auch Damen-Bekleidungsgeschäfte, sowie wie auch die andere oder andere Spielhalle und verschiedene
Restaurants, die derzeit sehr in Mode sind und wo man leckere Snacks zu sich nehmen kann.

A WELL STOCKED MARKET
In the Olivar market, there are products
typical of Mallorca such as local
sausages (sobrassada, camallot, botifarrons),
traditional Balearic cheeses,
nuts such as Mallorquin almonds,
which are on sale side by side with
Californian ones, but have, as any
Mallorquin will tell you, much more
flavour; cottage industry jams, Inca
biscuits, bread and cakes, take away
food from traditional recipes, spices
and condiments and wines.
In addition there is a wide variety of
fruit, vegetables, meat and fish all of
prime quality and at reasonable
prices.

Der Mercat de l´Olivar bietet ein gutes
Angebot von Mallorca-typischen Produkten,
zu denen auch die bekannten
Wurstwaren (Sobresadas, Camallots,
Botifarrons) gehören sowie die typischen
Käsesorten der Balearen oder
Nüsse und Hülsenfrüchte, wie die mallorquinischen
Mandeln, die auf dem
Markt zwar mit kalifornischen Mandeln
konkurrieren, die aber – wie Ihnen
jeder Mallorquiner bestätigen wird –
mehr Geschmack haben, als ihre amerikanischen
Verwandten.
Zudem gibt es hausgemachte Marmeladen,
Plätzchen aus Inka, Brot und
Gebäck, nach traditioneller Art hergestellte
Gerichte, Gewürze für das richtige
Abschmecken und Weine.

SINDICAT
FASHION, FOOTWEAR, AND COMPLEMENTS
A long time ago this was called Calle sa Capelleria, when the area
was still divided up according to guilds. This explains its long retailing
tradition, which combines the modern and the varied.
Vía Sindicat starts in Calle Bosseria and leads down to Plaça de Sant
Antoni with alleyways on either side where there are drapers’,
shops specialising in embroidery work and a few bookshops.
It is a pedestrianised street in which most of the shops sell clothes,
footwear, jewellery and costume jewellery, gifts, articles of decoration;
there are also chemists’, a tobacconist’s, a lottery outlet, and
shops selling perfumes and cosmetics, lingerie, fashion complements,
and even one with equipment for adventure sports.
The two spice shops at the end of the street are conspicuous for the
aromas that they imbue the street with. At its beginning, there is
an underground shopping centre which can be reached by escalator,
where there is a wide variety of businesses, a supermarket
among them. Other ideas include calling in at one of the establishments
selling kebabs, portions of pizza, or enjoy an ensaïmada
from the baker’s, founded in 1870, at the very end of the street.

war, Carrer de sa Capelleria. Dies sei der Beweis für ihre lange
Handels-Tradition, die heute durch ein modernes und abwechslungsreiches
Angebot ergänzt wird.
Die Via Sindicat nimmt ihren Anfang in der Calle Bosseria und reicht
bis zur Placa de Sant Antoni, mit Seitenstrassen, in denen Kurzwaren,
Stickwaren und Bücher angeboten werden.
Sindicat ist eine Fußgängerzone, in der die Geschäfte Mode, Schuhe,
Schmuck, Modeschmuck, Geschenkartikel, Dekorationsartikel,
Arzneimittel, Tabakwaren, Lotterielose, Parfümerieartikel und Kosmetik,
Dessous, Accesoires und Zubehör für Abenteuersportarten
anbieten. Zudem bereichern zwei Gewürzläden die Straße mit ihren
Aromen. An ihrem Anfang liegt ein unterirdisches Einkaufszentrum,
welches man auf Rolltreppen erreicht, und in dem sich eine
Vielzahl von Geschäften befindet, unter anderem ein Supermarkt.
Eine weitere Option ist, an einem der Stände haltzumachen, die
Kebabs und Pizza anbieten oder am Ende der Strasse in der Bäckerei
von 1870 eine Ensaimada zu essen.

Vía Sindicat is the shopping area par
excellence of the city, a title it has
boasted for several centuries now. It
has always been a lively, bustling
street, though now it is nothing compared
to what it must have been like
45 years ago. Until then, it was open
to trams, road traffic and pedestrians,
so that crossing it was an act of daring.
The union of the shopkeepers
managed to have it pedestrianised.

A LONG TRADITION
The Craft Boulevard of Palma is in Sa Gerreria, one of the oldest and most historical areas
of the city. The main centre of artisans and culture since medieval times, it was home to the
island’s cultural and commercial activity, binding together a unique craft tradition that dates
back to Phoenician, Greek, Roman and above all Arab civilizations.
Nowadays, thanks to an ambitious project of Palma Council, it is possible to relive the
ancient crafts just as they were carried out in past ages and purchase genuinely Balearic
products.
In the Craft Boulevard one may watch demonstrations of the production of glassware,
woodwork, pottery, paper, pearls, cloth, etc.

Ein Spaziergang durch die “Handwerks-Promenade” führt durch das Viertel Sa Gerrería,
einem der ältesten und geschichtsträchtigsten Stadtteile Palmas. Neuralgisches Zentrum für
Handwerk, Kunsthandwerk und kulturelle Aktivitäten seit dem Mittelalter, beherbergte dieses
Viertel schon immer den regsten Kultur- und Handelsbetrieb der Insel, wo sich eine einzigartige
Handwerkstradition entwickelte, die bereits aus den Zeiten der phönizischen, griechischen,
römischen und vor allem arabischen Kulturen stammt.
Heute ist es mithilfe eines ehrgeizigen Projektes durch die Stadtverwaltung von Palma
gelungen, die alten Zünfte wiederzubeleben und das Handwerk so auszuführen, wie es in
früheren Zeiten gemacht wurde und so Erzeugnisse zu erwerben, die ausschliesslich von der
Insel Mallorca stammen.

The dancer and choreographer

National Dance Award, created
these ‘Songs for Before a War’ with
the subtitle ‘The Ideas Bazaar’, a
reflection in dance on human values
that moves from entertainment
to demands, showing the different
facets of flamenco.
The production, which takes its
name from a film documentary by
Basilio Martín Patino that was censored
by the Franco regime, takes
the form of a series of songs, some
better known than others.
The María Pagés Company, which
first presented the show in December
2003 in Torrelodones, took the
work as a testing ground for more
ambitious productions.

Die aus Sevilla stammende Tänzerin
und Choreografin Maria Pagés,
mit dem Nationalen Tanzpreis
2002 ausgezeichnet, schuf unter
dem Überbegriff “Der Bazar der
Ideen” diese Lieder vor einem
Krieg, eine getanzte Reflektion
über die menschlichen Werte, die
sich zwischen Vergnügen und Kritik
bewegt und verschiedene Facetten
des Flamenco zeigt.
Die Inszenierung, die ihren Namen
dem während des Franco-Regimes
zensierten Dokumentarfilm von
Basilio Martin Patino verdankt, präsentiert
sich als eine Folge von mehr
oder weniger bekannten Liedern.
Das Ensemble von Maria Pagés, das
dieses Werk im Dezember 2003 in
Torrelodones (Madrid) aufführte,
nutzte diese Arbeit als Versuchsfeld
für anspruchsvollere Produktionen.

A TRIBUTE FULL OF JOY
One of the great legends of contemporary
dance, Maurice Béjart, will
also be displaying his imagination in
Palma, in the form of movement.
With the performance of ‘The Presbytery’,
he will be paying tribute to
Freddie Mercury, the singer of
Queen, and to the dancer Jorge Donn,
both of whom fell victim to AIDS at
45 years of age.
This production, performed by
Béjart Ballet Lausanne and devised
by the revolutionary choreographer
at his 74 years of age to the strains of
Queen and Mozart, has been defined
by the maestro himself, as a “ballet
full of joy, not at all sinister or pessimistic”.
“I am sure that Freddie
Mercury will be seated at the piano
alongside Mozart in that no man’s
land we will all be going to one
day”, assures Béjart. The work was
premiered in Paris in 1977 with the
other members of Queen and Elton

John in the audience. The critics
hailed it as a magnificent illustration
of Béjart’s humanism, a celebration
of youth and life, an encounter with
death and love.
FRÖHLICHE HOMMENAGE
Eines der großen Mythen des zeitgenössischen
Tanzes, Maurice Béjart,
wird seine Vorstellungskraft in Palma
entfalten, in Form der Bewegung und
in Form einer Hommage, mittels Le
Presbytère, an den Sänger von Queen
Freddie Mercury und an den Tänzer
Jorge Donn, beide im Alter von 45
Jahren verstorben.
Diese vom Béjart Ballet Lausanne
getanzte und von dem revolutionären
Choreografen mit 74 Jahren erdachte
Choreografie, hat der Meister selbst
als “ein fröhliches, gar nicht finsteres
oder pessimistisches Ballet” mit
Musik von Queen und Mozart definiert.
“In diesem Niemandsland in
das wir alle eines Tages gehen werden
sitzt Freddie Mercury sicher mit
Mozart am Klavier” sagt Béjart.
Das Werk wurde 1997 in Paris mit in
Gegenwart der Musiker von Queen
und Elton John uraufgeführt. Die
Kritik bezeichnete es als grossartiges
Beispiel für den Humanismus
Béjarts, ein Fest der Jugend und des
Lebens, eine Begegnung mit dem
Tod und der Liebe.

From October 22nd to November 5th, the Teatre Xesc
Forteza is to open its doors to classical music with the
occasion of Música Mallorca, a series of concerts that featured
Teresa Berganza during its first season last year, and
this, its second year, hopes to achieve its consolidation.
The programme, which can be viewed in detail on the
Internet site www.musivamallorca..com includes lieder,
arias, duos, a chamber concert, and master classes of
singing; it will present singers well-known throughout
Central Europe.
This year’s first concert, announced for October 22nd, will
feature the German soprano Diana Damrau, the Argentine
baritone Ivan Páley, together with pianist Stephan
Matthias Lademann, who will perform works by Brahms,
Mahler, Schubert, Schumann and Rossini.
One of the recitals to most look forward to will be the Gala
‘Viva l’Opera’ on October 29th, in which various soloists
will take part, accompanied by the Choir of the University
of the Balearic Islands, conducted by Joan Company
and the Música Mallorca Festival Orchestra conducted by
Olivier Tardy. The evening’s programme will include
pieces by Bizet, Delibes, Donizetti, Mascagni, Puccini,
Rossini and Verdi.
Beethoven, Weber and Lortzing take over on November
3rd, with a recital by the soprano Robin Johannsen, the
baritone Ingolf Seidel, the pianists Dunja Robotti, Kevin
McCutcheon and Caspar Frantz, the cellist Franz Ortner
and the clarinettist Daniel Bollinger.
Two days later, the protagonist will be Handel’s Messiah.
The work is to be performed by the soprano Robin
Johannsen, the mezzo-soprano Judith Christ, the tenor
Maximillian Schmitt, the bass Erdem Baydar, the University
Choir and the Baroque Orchestra of Mallorca, conducted
by Barry Sergeant. Rumiko Harada will be the
soloist. Master classes, both of singing will be given by
Sylvia Gestzy, with Alexander Ezhelev at the piano.

Das Theater Xesc Corteza öffnet seine Türen vom 22.
Oktober bis zum 5. November der klassischen Musik im
Rahmen der Konzertreihe Musica Mallorca. Nach seiner

Schmitt, dem Bass Erdem Baydar, dem Choral der
Universität und dem Barock-Orchester Mallorka unter
der Leitung von Barry Sargent. Als Solistin tritt Rumiko

Marlango.
Marlango is the result of the musical
interests of the actress Leonor
Watling, the pianist Alejandro
Pelayo and trumpeter Oscar Ybarra,
who, back in 1998, started to give
shape to an album that would eventually
see the light of day in 2004.
The result: an honest disc with jazz
and rock influences that would be
perfectly at home played at a cabaret
or as the sound track of a David
Lynch film.
Their music, a journey to the lands
of joy and sadness, desolation and
hope, is making its mark in countries
as far away as Japan. On
November 18th, it will do so nearer
to hand, in the Auditorium in Palma,
where we shall be able to listen to
material from their latest record,
‘Automatic Imperfection’.
Before this, on October 2nd, the Sala
Assaig will witness an encounter
with two of rock’s leading lights:
Glenn Hughes, the founder of the
group Trapeze, who has links with
one of the most charismatic bands of
all time, Deep Purple, with whom he
recorded three of their most important
albums, and Chad Smith the
drummer of the irrepressible Red Hot
Chili Peppers.
Bass player Glenn Hughes has been
part of numerous rock bands
(Whitesnake, Black Sabbath), but it
was with Deep Purple that he grew
musically and left his mark for posterity
on records like ‘Burn’, ‘Stormbringer’
and ‘Come Taste the Band’.
After leaving the group in 1976, the
first time Deep Purple split up, he

embarked on a solo career, toying
with funk, soul and jazz.
In Assaig, Hughes will be performing
with the Chad Smith Band, with
whom he will be playing tracks from
his latest solo album ‘Songs in the
Key of Rock’as well as songs by Deep
Purple and the Red Hot Chili Peppers

Vorher, am 2. Oktober, findet im
Assaig ein Treffen mit zwei Autoritäten
des Rock statt: Glenn Hughes,
Günder der Gruppe Trapeze
und verbunden mit einer der charismatischsten
Gruppen aller Zeiten,
Deep Purple – mit denen er drei seiner
wichtigsten Platten aufgenommen
hat - und Chad Smith, Schlagzeuger
der Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Der Bassist Glenn Hughes hat zahlreichen
Rock-Gruppen angehört
(Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, es
waren jedoch Deep Purple bei
denen er als Musiker erwachsen
wurde und mit denen er auf Platten
wie Burn, Stormbringer oder Come
Taste The Band seine Spuren hinterließ.
Nach seinem Ausscheiden aus
der Gruppe im Jahr 1976, die erste
Trennung der Gruppe, nahm er seine
Solokarriere auf, spielte mit
Funk, Soul, Jazz.
Im Assaig wird Hughes von der
Chad Smith Band begleitet, mit der

The second Jazz Voyeur Festival
continues with four concerts
scheduled for the months of October
and November. Chronologically,
the first will be given by
Michael Bolton. This international
superstar with over 45 million
albums sold throughout the world
will be performing at the Casino
de Mallorca on October 30th. The
following day, at the Auditorium in
Palma, Paquito D’Rivera will be
celebrating his 50 years in the
music business with a concert in
which he will be surrounded by
guests such as Bebo Valdés, Rosa
Passos and Chano Dominguez. On
November 5th (Sala Assaig) it will
be the turn of Roy Haynes, one of
the great names in contemporary
jazz, who was once the drummer
for Miles Davis, John Coltrane,
Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughan,
The series of concerts is rounded
off by pianist Brad Mehldau
(November 18th, Conservatory)
and the Blind Boys of Alabama
(November 25th, Auditorium).

IT’S TIME FOR THE FIESTAS
OF SANTA CECILIA

Towards the end of November, Palma Council celebrates the
week dedicated to Santa Cecilia with a programme of events
that aim to make the architectural and artistic heritage of the
city better known. Visitors will be able to enjoy full, revealing
tours of many of Palma’s beautiful churches and in the same
welcoming, magical setting, a series of the now traditional
concerts, given by different musical formations, ranging from
chamber music ensembles to choral music. Let us not forget
that a few years ago the famous architect, Rafael Moneo, said
that the architectural heritage of Palma was comparable to that
of Florence in its richness and importance. Here is a good
chance to see if that is true.
There are six visits planned: one of the most attractive is to the
Temple, where the participants will be received with an
informative exhibition and will be able to attend a talk on the
Knights Templar given by an expert. The visit to the church of
Santa Margalida will take in the church, the chapterhouse and
the pharmacy.

The Chapel of Sant Llorenç is in the form of a crypt, with a
ceiling of cross ribbed vaulting, and was built at the beginning
of the 14th century in the manner of the Cistercian Gothic.
During the visit the public will not only be able to see its
sacred art collection, but will also be given extensive information
about all its treasures.
Another emblematic place for lovers of artistic heritage is
Mallorca’s Diocesan Museum, currently housed in the church
of the Seminari Vell. Of course, speaking of emblems of the
city, Ramón Llull and his tomb in the church of Sant Francesc
are a must. Without any doubt, these will be two of the most
interesting visits and the mystical, almost mysterious, atmosphere
of Sant Francesc will amaze those who come along.
Last but not least, the Royal Chapel of Santa Aina, inside the
Almudaina Palace, dates from the14th century and has Gothic
and Romanic elements.
So, this very full programme is a feast for culture lovers. The
concerts, always late in the evening, add a final note of gaiety.

STEHT BALD BEVOR
Die Stadtverwaltung von Palma veranstaltet in den letzten
Tagen des Monats November die Festwoche der Heiligen
Cecilia mit einem Festprogramm, die das reiche Kulturerbe
der Stadt vorstellen soll. Den festlichen Rahmen bilden die
magisch-anziehenden, hellerleuchteten Kirchen von Palma,
die jedem Besucher unvergessliche Eindrücke bescheren
werden und wo auch die traditionell zu diesem Anlass organisierten
Konzerte stattfinden, die von verschiedenen musikalischen
Formationen vorgetragen werden und die von
Kammermusik bis zu Chorälen reichen. Der berühmte
Architekt Rafael Moneo äusserte hierzu vor einigen Jahren,
dass das kulturelle Erbe der Altstadt von Palma im Hinblick
auf seinen Reichtum und seine Bedeutung seiner Ansicht
nach durchaus mit dem der Stadt Florenz zu vergleichen sei.
Die Festwoche bietet eine gute Gelegenheit, sich davon
selbst zu überzeugen.
Vorgesehen sind sechs Besichtigungstouren. Die attraktivste
unter ihnen ist sicherlich die des “Temple”, wo Informationstafeln
aufgestellt werden, denen auch das Programm einer
Konferenz über die Tempelritter entnommen werden kann, die
von einem auf dieses Thema spezialisierten Historiker durchgeführt
wird.
Die Besichtigung der Kirche Santa Margalida führt durch die
ganze Kirche, das Klaustrum, den Kapitelsaal und die Apotheke.
Die Kapelle des Hlg. Lorenz (San Lorenzo) hat die Form einer
überdachten Krypta mit Kreuzgewölben und wurde Anfang
des 14. Jahrhunderts erbaut und im Stil der Gotik der Zisterziensermönche
ausgeführt. Bei dieser Tour wird dem interessierten
Besucher nicht nur die Möglichkeit geboten, den Saal
mit sakraler Kunst zu besichtigen, sondern es wird auch eine
umfassende Einführung in das gesamte kulturelle Vermächtnis
gegeben.
Ein weiterer wichtiger Ort für alle Liebhaber des Kulturerbes
unserer Stadt ist das Museo Diocesano de Mallorca, das sich
heute in der Kirche “Iglesia del Seminari Vell” befindet. Auch
das Grab des grossen Dichters Ramón Llull ist einen Besuch
wert – es befindet sich in der Kirche “Iglesia de Sant Francesc”.
Letztgenannte Besichtigungstouren sind zweifelsohne
mit die interessantesten und die mystische, ja fast mysteriöse
Atmosphäre der Kirche Sant Francesc schlägt sicher jeden
Besucher in ihren Bann.
Schliesslich sei auch noch die königl. Kapelle der Santa Aina
erwähnt, die sich im Palacio de la Almudaina befindet, aus
dem 14. Jahrhundert stammt und mit gotischen und romanischen
Elementen geschmückt ist.
Es handelt sich also um ein sehr umfassendes Programm und
ein wichtiges Fest für alle, die die Kultur lieben. Die Konzerte,
die immer bei Einbruch der Dunkelheit stattfinden, setzen
dem Ganzen noch ihr eigenes Quentchen Fröhlichkeit auf.

Start out on this tour in Plaça de les Tortugues (a
popular name for Plaça Joan Carles I). Where c/Jovellanos
begins one comes to a small piece of sculpture,
the Moor’s Head. There are those who say that it
might commemorate the executions ordered by
Captain Toni Barceló, a 17th century corsair, but it is
more likely to have been the result people confusing
the ‘head’ of the Born, understood as the beginning
or end of the street, and the ‘head’ of a person
placed on public display.
Continue along c/ Jovellanos and turn to the left into
c/ Paraires, until this street joins Sant Nicolau. In
Plaça del Mercat, behind Sant Nicolau church, one
can see the stone of Santa Catalina Thomàs, where
tradition has it that the Mallorquin saint awaited her
admission into a convent. They say that the bells
pealed loudly when she was accepted by the convent
of Santa Magdalena. At Can Pinós (no.15) is the
coat of arms of the Sureda de Sant Martí family and
the motto that the knight Salvador Sureda adopted
for the famous tourney that took place in Naples in
1444 against Francí Valseca: “Dins és lo qui el pren”
(“Inside is what takes him”). Next to this house, L’Ecce
Homo street leads into the Rambla; the street
brings to mind the miracle of the appearance of this
figure to a venerable woman who had just been

tempted by the ill-intentioned Devil. In the church of
the Santa Magdalena convent, one could speak at
length of the prodigies of Santa Catalina Tomàs and
how the Devil tortured her cruelly.
Walk up the slope to the La Sang church, which
holds the most venerated figure in Palma, that of
Sant Crist de la Sang. There is also there another less
well-known image of Christ on the cross, that of the
Condenados a Muerte (Sentenced to Death), which
was put on display whenever there was an execution;
on one occasion, tradition has it that the Christ
spoke to a repentant condemned man and promised
him he would attain Glory. Still in the La Sang church
another treasure can be seen: the Gothic crib scene
from the convent of Jesus; the legend relates that it
was a gift following a promise that the captain of a
ship had made when in danger of shipwreck.
One reaches calle Concepcion via calle de la Pietat,
and there in the church of that name, look at the
Sant Crist del Noguer, which originally came from
the convent of Santa Margalida; the legend holds
that this beautiful Gothic figure was discovered
carved miraculously on the trunk of a walnut tree.
Walk on past the el Sepulcro fountain, a remider of
the old church of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre
of Jerusalem. Near the fountain of les Tortugues, one
can observe a stone plaque commemorating the
knights who would take part in jousting tournaments
– the verb in the vernacular is ‘bornear’– in
the boulevard in reality named ‘Born’.
Continue along the Born, as far as the beginning of
calle de Sant Feliu, and turn into the street, popularly
called de Ses Carasses (Cheeky Faces). Number 10,
a house called Can Pavesi, is defended by the insolent
faces that give the street its nickname; the
largest of them is brazenly sticking his tongue out at
us, with the slogan “Eundo” (“For the passer by”)
written above it. Via calle de Montenegro, walk on
to the junction with calle del Estanco, next to which
is the calle de la Mà del Moro (Moor’s Hand St.), the
name of which recalls a historical event; the murder
of a chaplain by his Moorish slave in 1731, and how,
after his execution, the convicted man’s hand was
hung on the façade of the house.
After going along first calle de Montenegro and
then calle de Sant Joan, gaze on the architectural
marvel of La Lonja, with the defending Angel of la
Mercaderia accompanied by other figures, like the
enigmatic gargoyles, one of which looks as if he is
crying out sorrowfully: “Oh! How cold it is!” Carry
on to the Hort del Rei, near which one espies the
tower of the Angel of the Almudaina. Towards the

end of the 14th century the alchemist Jaume de Lustrac
had his laboratory below the angel: de Lustrac
had the honourable job of seeking the two most
esoteric of elements: the philosopher’s stone and the
elixir of youth.
Of course, it was in the Almudaina Palace during the
visit King Alfonso XII made to Mallorca in 1877 that,
while the local authorities were being presented to
him, it came to the turn of the Mayor of Bunyola.
The latter was a landowner too and owned an estate
called Los Cocons; aftter being presented by his title
of Mayor he shouted out, “and Lord of Los Cocons”,
to which it is said that the King replied “May God
preserve them for many a year, Mr Mayor.” (A play
on words between the name of the estate, “Cocons”
and the vulgar Catalan word for testicles “Collons”)
At the north-west corner of the Almudaina Palace,
near the steps called the Costa de la Seu, is the
feared tower of Las Cabezas (the Heads) where the
heads of those who had been executed would be
hung “per terror e exempli públic” (“to terrify others
and make a public example [of the deceased]”)…..
well, it is in fact a tower built in 1909 as the successor
to the genuine article.
Round off the tour in the Born, recalling the expression
“Volta el món i torna al Born” (“Round the
world and back to the Born”). If one tried to converse
with the sphinxes, the popular lionesses would
surely relate how they were censored, their breasts
being cut off, and they would also recall the comment
a girl once made to a young man who was trying
hard to go too far with her only to be told, “You
can go and touch up the lionesses on the Born!”

Unser Rundgang beginnt an der Plaza de las Tortugas
(Plaza de Joan Carles I). Auf der Höhe der Calle de
Jovellanos sehen wir eine kleine Skulptur, den “Kopf
des Mauren” (Cabeza del Moro). Es wird gesagt, das
sie als Erinnerung an die durch den Kapitän Toni Barceló,
einen Korsaren des 18. Jahrhunderts, angeordneten
Exekutionen, errichtet wurde. Am wahrscheinlichsten
ist jedoch, das es sich um eine Verwechslung
des Begriffs “Kopf” des Born im Sinne von Anfang
oder oberes Ende und “Kopf” einer Person der hier
zur Schau gestellt wurde, handelt.

Wir gehen auf der Calle de Jovellanos weiter und
biegen links ab in die Calle Paraires bis wir auf die
Calle de Sant Nicolau stoßen. Auf der Plaza del Mercat,
hinter Sant Nicolau steht der Stein der Santa
Catalina Tomas, von der die Überlieferung sagt, das

die mallorkinische Heilige hier auf ihre Aufnahme in
ein Kloster wartete. Es wird gesagt, das nach ihrer
Aufnahme in das Kloster von Santa Magdalena alle
Glocken der Stadt läuteten. An Can Pinós (Nr. 15),
befindet sich das Familienwappen der Sureda de
Sant Marti und der Leitspruch des Ritters Salvador
Sureda für das berühmte Turnier von Neapel im Jahr
1444, gegen Franci Valseca: “Drinnen ist wer es sich
nimmt.” Direkt daneben stößt die Calle de l’Ecce
Homo, die auf die wunderbare Erscheinung dieser
Figur erinnert, die einer achtbaren vom Teufel in Versuchung
gebrachten Frau widerfuhr, auf die Ramblas.
In der Kirche des Konvents von Santa Magdalena,
könnten wir lange von den Wundern der Santa
Catalina Tomas sprechen und von Torturen denen sie
durch den Teufel ausgesetzt wurde.
Wir laufen bis zur Kirche de la Sang, in der sich das
am meisten verehrte Gottesbild Palmas befindet,
Sant Crist de la Sang. Es gibt noch ein weiteres weniger
bekanntes Bild des gekreuzigten Christus, Los
Condenados a Muerte, das bei Exekutionen zur
Schau gestellt wurde. In einem Fall, so die Überlieferung,
sprach es zu einem reuigen Verurteilten und
versprach die ewige Glückseligkeit. Ebenfalls in der
Iglesia de la Sang befindet sich ein weiterer Schatz,
die gotische Krippe, die aus dem Convento de Jesus
stammt. Die Legende erzählt, das sie das versprochene
Geschenk eines in Seenot geratenen Schiffskapitäns
ist.
Auf der Calle de la Pietat gelangen zur Calle de la
Concepcion und in der Kirche gleichen Namens besuchen
den Sant Crist del Noguer, der aus dem Kloster
von Santa Margalida stammt. Von dieser wunderschönen
Skulptur sagt die Legende, das man sie fertig
geschnitzt im Stamm eines Baumes fand. Wir gehen
am Brunnen des Sepulcro vorbei, der an die alte Kirche
der Ritter des Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalen
erinnert. In der Nähe der Fuente de las Tortugas, halten
wir inne, um den Gedenkstein zu betrachten, der
an die Ritter erinnert, die hier, auf dem heutigen Born,
zu Turnieren anzutreten pflegten.
Wir gehen auf dem Born weiter und biegen rechts in
die Calle de Sant Feliu ab, im Volksmund auch de ses
Carasses (der Fratzen) genannt, denn auf der Höhe
der Nummer 10 steht das Can Pavesi genannte
Haus, das von respektlosen Gesichtern bewacht wird
und damit der Strasse ihren Namen gibt. Das größte
streckt uns unverschämterweise die Zunge heraus,
mit der Inschrift Eundo (für den der vorbeikommt)
über ihr. Auf der Calle de Montenegro gelangen wir
zur Kreuzung der Calle del Estanco, an der die Calle
de la Ma de Moro liegt, Name der an ein wahrhaftiges
Ereignis erinnert, die Ermordung eines Kaplans
durch seinen musulmanischen Sklaven im Jahre 1731
und die Hand des Gefangenen die, nach seiner Hinrichtung
an die Fassade gehängt wurde.
Auf der Calle de Montenegro und der Calle de Sant
Joan gelangen wir zum architektonischen Wunder,
das die Lonja ist, mit dem Engel der die Waren verteidigt
und anderen Symbolen, wie die enigmatischen
Monsterabbilder, von denen eines einen
schauerhaften Schrei auszustossen scheint: Oh welche
Kälte ! Wir gehen weiter zum Hort del Rei, in
dessen Umgebung wir uns den Turm des Engels der
Almudaina ansehen. Unter dem Engel befand sich
am Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts das Labor des Alchimisten
Jaume de Lustrac, der die ehrenwerte Aufgabe
hatte, zwei der esoterischsten Elemente zu finden:
den Stein der Weisen und den Jungbrunnen. Im
nordöstlichen Winkel des Almudaina-Palasts, an der
Kathedrale gelegen, befindet sich der schreckliche
Turm der Köpfe, von dem man die Köpfe der Hingerichteten
hing “per terror e exempli public” (zum
Schrecken und als öffentliches Beispiel)…wobei der
Turm selbst aus dem Jahre 1909 stammt und den
ursprünglichen ersetzte.
Unser Spaziergang endet am Born, wie das Sprichwort
sagt “lauf um die Welt und kehr zurück zum
Born”. Wenn wir uns mit den Sphinx-Figuren des
Born unterhalten könnten, würden sie uns sicher
erzählen, wie sie zensiert wurden, denn man entfernte
ihre Brüste und ebenso würden sie uns an das junge
Mädchens erinnern, das einem zudringlichen Verehrer
sagte: “Fass doch die Löwinen des Born an!”

Cantos, danzas y discursos (Song, dance and discourse) is
the subtitle of this show, The Prince, the content of which
has nothing to do with the Renaissance classic by Machiavelli,
and even less to do with Saint-Expury’s The Little
Prince. The piece’s only actor, Albert Vidal, introduces

THE AUDIENCE AS PRINCE KUGÚ, PRESIDENT OF
THE INTERNATIONAL TELLURIC MOVEMENT
himself to the audience as Prince Kugú, President of the
International Telluric Movement, and directs sharp criticism
at highly varied aspects of modern society. He is
accompanied on stage by musicians Xavier Macaya (violin
and viola) and Jordi Rallo (tabla and udu drums), playing
music with oriental features.
Albert Vidal is considered to be one of the most original
Catalan theatrical actors and creators, with an exceptional
capacity for gesture and expression. His career includes
experiences as intriguing as L’home urbà (Urban man),

where he settled into a cage at Barcelona Zoo, just like one
more animal in residence.
After a prolonged absence from our nearest theatres, Vidal
returned a few months ago with The Prince, a show presented
at the National Theatre of Catalonia in Barcelona,
and was received with glowing reviews. In this piece,
which opens the season at the Teatre del Mar, Vidal brings
together gesture, sound, movement, humour and the play
of words and body language.
Among other aspects of The Prince, the critics highlighted
the actor’s versatility and the way he criticises themes as
varied as money, advertising and art. The work is codirected
by Toni Cots, the wardrobe is by Judit Rafel and
Teresa Mo, lighting by Paco Beltrán, and choreography by
Montse Colomer.

Sein einziger Darsteller, Albert Vidal, präsentiert sich dem
Publikum als der Prinz Kugú, Präsident des Movimiento
Telúrico Internacional, der scharfe Kritik an den unterschiedlichsten
Aspekten unserer Gesellschaft übt. Auf der

ist Albert Vidal vor einigen Monaten mit dem Werk El
príncep zurückgekehrt, inszeniert im Teatre Nacional de
Catalunya, in Barcelona und mit ausgezeichneten Kritiken
empfangen. Vidal vereint Gesten, Klang, Bewegung,
Humor und Körper- und Wortspiele in dieser Arbeit, mit
der das Teatre del Mar seine Saison eröffnet. Die Kritiken
heben an El príncep, unter anderem die Vielseitigkeit seines
Protagonisten und die schärfe seiner Kritik an Themen

In the field of children’s theatre, Estudi
Zero, one of the most outstanding
companies of the Balearics, have
often turned their hand to universally
known tales and to the Mallorquin
‘rondalles’. Now it is the turn of
fables, with their typifying characters,
all of them animals, in a production
that concentrates more on their
humorous aspects rather than on their
moral tone. Pere M. Mestre both
directs and lends his voice to this representation,
played by Maria Rosselló
and Tomeu Blanch.
In seiner Facette des Kindertheaters,
das es mit anderen Produktionen für
Erwachsene abwechselt, hat sich die
Theater-Kompanie Estudi Zero, den
“Rondalles” genähert. Diesmal
befasst sie sich mit den Fabeln und
ihren charakteristischen Charakteren,
ausschließlich Tiere, in einer
Inszenierung, die die humoristischen

Antoni Oliver, author of the contemporary
comedies that the TIC company
(City Independent Theatre) have
been presenting on stage for the last
five years, and Biel Jordà, currently
one of the foremost theatrical creators
in Mallorca, have united forces
in a show written by the former and

tenderness and humour, examines
different forms of love and friendship.

MÓNICA FUSTER TAKES OVER ‘THE MIRÓ’
TWO YEARS AGO, THE MALLORQUIN ARTIST MÓNICA FUSTER was invited to take over the space that Joan Miró bequeathed

With close connections with the gallery and as a self-confessed
admirer of Miró’s genius, this young artist is to occupy
the Foundation with an ambitious project, ‘Traç’, which is
nothing less than an in-depth view of the themes that tend to
serve her as inspiration: the interplay of mirages, appearance,
ephemerality, with a particular spirit of playfulness. All of
this based firmly on perfect familiarity with techniques ranging
from engraving to drawing, not to mention more technological
forms of expression. At the start of the exhibition,
viewers will come across a reflecting pool in which a kaleidoscopic
game of seduction can be seen in over 175 prisms
of stainless steel. Light and sound complete the installation.
To this one should add a series of drawings that Mónica
Fuster has hung in relief on the wall for the light to make
them more dynamic. In them are revealed the characters, alter
egos, and symbols that express the emotions, doubts, dreams
and nightmares of one of the most personal and committed of

this generation of Mallorquin artists. The project of an artist’s
book profusely details the world of science fiction that tends
to feature in her work.
At the same time, after being shaken by the crystallographic
structure of the pool at the Miró, in the Cubic Gallery the
spectator can see the projection of three videos of sound on
which drawings by the artist are superimposed, yet again uniting
her creativity to that of the composer Pedro Tous, a regular
contributor to Mónica Fuster’s work. The viewer is unable
to remain unmoved as the poetic and suggestive way the artist
implicates the onlooker provokes one yet leaves one
unscathed.
MÓNICA FUSTER BESETZT ‘LA MIRÓ’
Eng mit diesen Räumlichkeiten verbunden und eine anerkannte
Bewunderin des genialen Malers, wird diese junge
Künstlerin die Stiftung mit einem ehrgeizigen Projekt erfüllen.
‘Trac’, lediglich eine Vertiefung der Motive für ihre Kreationen:
das Spiel der Illusionen, die Erscheinung, die Vergänglichkeit,
eine gewisse Verspieltheit. All dies verbunden
durch die Kenntnis verschiedener Techniken, von der Radierung
bis zur Zeichnung, ohne dabei technologische Ausdrukksformen
zu vergessen. Der Besucher begegnet direkt zum
Beginn der Ausstellung einem reflektierenden Becken, in
dem er ein Spiel kaleidoskopischer Verführung entdeckt, welches
aus mehr als 175 Edelstahl-Prismen besteht. Licht und
Beschallung komplettieren diese Installation.
Hinzuzufügen wäre noch eine Reihe von Zeichnungen, die
Monica Fuster von den Wänden löst, um sie durch das Licht
zu dynamisieren. In ihnen erscheinen ihre Charaktere, ihre
alter ego, die Symbole, die Emotionen, Zweifel, Träume und
Albträume einer der persönlichsten und engagiertesten
Künstlerinnen mallorkinischer Herkunft.
Das Projekt eines Künstlerbuchs detalliert ausführlich diese
Welt der Fiktion-Realität ihrer Kreationen. Ebenso kann der
Besucher nach dem Eindruck des kristallografischen Bekkens
der Miro im Espai Cúbic drei Video-Projektionen mit
übergelegten Zeichnungen der Künstlerin sehen. Einmal
mehr ist dies eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Komponisten
Pedro Tous, einer festen Grösse in Wirken von Mónica
Fuster. Der Betrachter verbleibt kaum unberührt, denn die
überzeugende poetische Art und Weise in der ihn die Künstlerin
einbezieht versteht zu provozieren ohne zu verletzen.

CRISTINA ESCAPE
Many people know of Cristina
Escape but only a few are familiar
with the art in her paintings.
The Casal Solleric settles a debt with
the Catalan painter, who has lived on
the island for several decades, with
an extensive anthological exhibition
covering the period from 1985 to
2005, twenty years of intense evolution,
albeit marked by a lack of exhibitions.
Escape is the queen of
colour, although it is with lines and
the draughtsmanship in her work, in
a clear evolution towards subtle,
convincing abstraction that her hallmark
is revealed in her slow, meticulous
work. The construction of what
she wants to relate in the more than
hundred works on view in the exhibition
shows a conscientious painter
who has never been daunted by the
capricious seesawing of the market.
From the figurativeness of her early
portraits, impregnated by suggestive
symbolism, to narration diluted by
means of subtle geometry, Escape
demonstrates she is an accomplished
painter.

Viele kennen Cristina Escape, jedoch
nur wenige wissen von der Kunst in
ihrer Malerei. Der Casal Solleric löst
mit dieser anthologischen Ausstellung
der Jahre 1985 bis 2005 eine
Schuld mit der katalanischen Malerin
ein, die bereits seit einigen Jahren auf
der Insel lebt, und dokumentiert so 20
Jahre intensiver Entwicklung, jedoch
geprägt durch das absolute Fehlen
von Ausstellungen.

THE PHOTOGRAPHY OF SANTOS MONTES
Once again, Santos Montes’ eye returns to the island,
this time to the Horrach Moyà Gallery, to show us an
intense, provocative inner world. Through his photographs,
the photographer tells stories, each one a complete
whole, even though he tends to present his work as
if it were a mosaic. The photographer does not think
twice about using friends and colleagues as models,
who he cross-dresses or makes adopt an alter ego – that
Hyde we all have inside us. The black and white allows
him to underline the sense of portraiture that all his

ausgestellten Werke sieht man eine
bewusste Malerin, die abseits der Frivolitäten
des Marktes ihre Eigenheit
bewahrt hat. Von der figurativen Qua-
lität ihrer ersten Portraits, voller Symbolismen,
bis zur aufgelösten Darstellung
durch eine subtile Geometrie,
beweist sich Escape als kompetente
Künstlerin.

Einmal mehr kehrt das Auge Santo Montes zurück auf
die Insel, konkret in die Galerie Horrach Moyà, um uns
seinen Fotos eine intensive und provokative Welt darzustellen.
Der Fotograf erzählt uns in seinen Instant – Aufnahmen
Geschichten, wobei er selbst jedoch seine Arbeit
als Mosaik darzustellen pflegt. Er zögert nicht, Freunde
und Kollegen als Modelle zu benutzen, sie zu verkleiden
und ihnen ein alter ego zu verleihen, das wir alle in uns
tragen. Die Reduzierung auf Schwarz-Weiss hilft ihm
diesen Charakter der Erzählung in seinen Fotos zu unterstreichen,
wobei man sie jedoch nicht mit Zeitungs- oder
Reportagefotos verwechseln darf. Santos Montes ist ein
Schriftsteller mit Kamera.

make their re-entry onto the stage of
the Balearic capital’s sporting scene
with Real Mallorca, Palma Aqua
Mágica, Nacex Jovent and Son
Amar Palma testing their strength
against the best teams in the competitive
leagues in which they participate,
alternating their presence
in the diaries of sports lovers.
Real Mallorca have made eleven
new signings to enable them to
wage a new, properly matched campaign
in the First Division and will
defend their chances of staying up
in the Son Moix ground against other
teams in what is thought to be the
best football league in the world.
Real Sociedad, Málaga, Racing de
Santander, Sevilla, Celta de Vigo,
Athletic de Bilbao and Athletic de
Madrid will be the Mallorquins’
opponents in the first stage of the
season and will enrich Palma’s
attractive football scene.
Palma Aqua Mágica, who, as a rule,
will play their matches in the Son
Moix Municipal Sports Centre at 7
pm on Sundays, are one of the main
novelties this year, due mainly to
the fact that they are bringing elite
class basketball back to the Balearic
capital. This brand-new club in the
Spanish Basketball League (LEB in

returns to centre stage as further
proof of the boom this sport is undergoing
in its field. After the professionals
have provided the spectacle
of the King’s Cup, the vessels find
Palma Bay to be a privileged setting
to keep the flame of competition
alive. It will be on October 1st and
2nd that the Pep Estela Memorial
Trophy at the Real Club Náutico de
Palma opens the second stage of the
season for the regattas of the 2005

REGATTEN DER LIGA
Nach den grossen Ereignissen des
Sommers, kehren die Segelboote
zurück, um den grossen Aufschwung
zu manifestieren, den dieser
Sport erlebt. Nachdem die Profis
die Copa del Rey zu einem
Ereignis gemacht haben, finden die
Boote in der Bucht von Palma eine
priviligierte Bühne um den sportlichen
Geist aufrecht zu erhalten.
Am 1. und 2. Oktober ist der Trofeo
Memorial Pep Estela der Auftakt für
den zweiten Abschnitt der Regatten
der Liga 2005 im Real Club Náutico
de Palma. Der Trofeo de la
Hispanidad findet am 8. und 9. Oktober
statt und ist die Fortsetzung
eines Wettbewerbs dessen Entscheidung
erst in den beiden letzten
Regatten Palma-Sa Rapita, am 22.
Oktober und dem entscheidenden
Trofeo Noli am 27. November.
Ohne Zweifel werden die Freunde
des Segelsports noch ausreichend
Gelegenheit haben zu verfolgen,
wie der charakteristische Embat das
Können einer Segelboot-Flotte auf
die Probe stellt, die Jahr für Jahr an
Teilnehmerzahl und Qualität dazugewinnt.
Jovent hingegen wird ein weiteres
Jahr in der zweiten Frauen Liga verbleiben,
mit dem Ziel in die höchste
Spielklasse aufzusteigen. Der von
Jaume Palou geführte Club hat sich
wieder einmal bemüht eine Spitzenmannschaft
für den Frauen-Basketball
zusammenzustellen.
Son Amar Palma ist nach wie vor
eine der Hauptreferenzen der Volleyball-Superliga
und startet als
Titelfavorit. Das mallorkinische
Team ist der Titelträger der Copa
del Rey und verteidigt seine Dominanz
im KO Turnier. Auch wird es
als Teilnehmer des Top Team Cups
den Namen Palmas auf dem alten
Kontinent vertreten. Dabei soll der
Palau de Son Moix weiterhin der
Sitz seiner Erfolge sein.
TUI MARATHON PALMA DE MALLORCA AND
MARATHON PALMA-CALVIÀ
On October 23, 2005 the starter’s pistol will signal the beginning of the TUI
Marathon Palma de Mallorca; the programme includes a race over 42.195
kilometres, a half marathon and the novelty of the Fun Run over a course
which will take the athletes round the most beautiful parts of the city. This
second TUI Marathon hopes to attract as many as 3,000 runners, after last
year’s event proved to be a success in terms of numbers of both spectators
and participants: the mass appeal of the race is one of its most attractive features.
Additionally, the range of events that Palma has to offer as far as athletics
is concerned is rounded off by the well established half marathon
between Palma and Calvià, which will take place on November 13.
The TUI Marathon, which expects to include world class runners among
those taking part, in a bid to make the race even more noteworthy, is well
placed to become one of the most important events staged in Mallorca, as
the return of milder temperatures more propitious for athletics and its setting
along the sea front will place it at the forefront of the autumn sporting
calendar. The Palma – Calvià half marathon will have the same effect but
with special attraction for local athletes.

Am 23. Oktober 2005 fällt der Startschuß für den TUI Marathon Palma de
Mallorca, zu dessen Programm ein Lauf über 42,195 kilometer, einen Halb-
Marathon und die Neuigkeit eines Fun Run der die Athleten an den schönsten
Ecken der Stadt vorbeiführt. In ihrer zweiten Ausgabe rechnet man mit
3.000 Läufern, nachdem diese Veranstaltung im letzten Jahr ein Teilnehmer
und Zuschauer-Erfolg war. Außerdem wird der Fächer der sportlichen Aktivitäten
durch den bereits klassischen Halb-Marathon von Palma – Calvia
erweitert, der am 13. November stattfindet.
Der TUI Marathon, an dem Läufer mit erstklassigen Zeiten teilnehmen um
die Qualität der Veranstaltung zu steigern, ist auf dem besten Weg sich in
eines der wichtigsten Ereignisse auf der Insel zu verwandeln und gewinnt
mit der Rückkehr etwas milderer Temperaturen für den Sport an der Küste
noch mehr an Bedeutung. Der Halbmarathon Palma-Calvia widerum ist
von besonderem Interesse für die Athleten der Insel.

The courtyards of the seigneurial houses in Palma are architecturally unique. Palma is a city of courtyards and visiting them
involves visiting the streets with the most historic lineage in the city. Many of these courtyards are named after the families that
they belonged, or still belong, to or after the buildings or churches that they are a feature of. Complete immersion in the seigneurial

CARRER DE CAN SAVELLÀ, 13
16th century courtyard on a medieval
one, with alterations at the end of the
17th century. The coats of arms of the
Berga and Juny families can be seen
on the columns. According to tradition,
Emperor Charles V stayed at this
house. A Renaissance window with
the emperor’s portrait commemorated
his visit. In the 20th century the window
has been transferred to the
March Palace. Private property.

und zum Ende des 17. Jahrhunderts
umgebaut wurde. Die Säulenaufsätze

an diesen Besuch baute man

CARRER DE CAN SAVELLÀ, 4
This house was renovated in approximately
1725 by Juan Sureda i Villalonga,
the first Marquis of Vivot, over a
medieval structure. It became the
Sureda family home from the 18th
century and was previously home to
the Villalonga family. The patio of this
house is the result of a general reform
directed by the Valencian Jaime de
Espinosa. The entrance floor is of
compacted earth, columns with entasis,
Corinthian capitals, the gallery fea-

tures three pilaster arches at the bottom

This house, originally belonging to the
Moix family, was acquired by the Dezcallar
family after which it was named.
In the 19th century it was bought by
Maria-Agnés Ribera i Garau, the
descendant of a wealthy merchant. Its
patio is one of the oldest preserved
examples in Palma. It is Gothic in style
and is notable for its arches, octagonal
pillars and entrance. A few years ago,
while work was being carried out on
the house, several Gothic murals
were discovered and which are now
kept in the Museu de Mallorca. Private

Moix und wurde im 17. Jh. von der

series of alterations was begun. These
included the addition of the columned
porch and the wooden eaves. The
Gothic windows on the façade were
bricked up, and the courtyard was

Originally owned by the Vallespir family
of Inca, this house passed to the
Dameto family in the 18th century.
From then on it was known as Can
Dameto, to which was added “de la
Quartera”, the name of the square
nearby. Although the courtyard was
reformed in the 17th century, a series
of medieval features are conserved,
such as the octagonal column and its
pilasters. Its sobriety makes this courtyard
one of the most representative of
the austere way of life of seigneurial
Majorca. Private property.
Dieses Haus gehörte der Familie Vallespir
aus Inca. Im 18. Jh. ging es in den
Besitz der Familie Dameto über. Seitdem
ist es unter dem Namen Can
Dameto bekannt, wobei “de la Quartera”,

Its construction was ordered by
Francesc Truyols i Font de Roqueta in
1696, based on drawings by the engineer
Martín Gil de Gaínza, who came
to Majorca from Navarre to work on
building the city walls. The elliptic
staircase was built in the 19th century.
It takes its name from the title, Mar-
quis of La Torre, granted to Nicolau
Truyols i Dameto by the Archduke
Charles, pretender to the Spanish
throne in the War of Succession. Open

An original Gothic building, it was
renovated by the first Count of Ayamans
(16th c.). Home to the Togores
family (16th c.) and the Villalonga
family (18th c.). The coat of arms of
the 7th Count of Ayamans appears on
the facade. Its name comes from
Catalina Zaforteza i de Togores, an
eminent figure in the Majorcan Carlist
movement and known as a devout
Christian. The house was acquired by
the Museum of Majorca in 1968.

Courtyard dating from the end of the
17th century, in which all the features
which would subsequently define the
typical townhouse courtyard in Palma
come together: extraordinarily
depressed arches, a loggia, ionic

wrought-iron railings. The pleasing
harmony of the whole set the
style for alterations carried out

A medieval house reformed in the
16th century by the Sureda Family
whose coat of arms can be seen in the
study windows and in different places
in the courtyard. Probably dating from
the 17th century, the courtyard was
reformed in the 19th century and
underwent a final modification by the
architect Guillem Forteza in 1941,
when the present staircase was
designed. A project by the architect
Miquel Vicens restored the house to
its original aspect in order to be the
headquarters for Palma’s municipal
archive. Open to the public.

The Estudi General Lul.Lià was converted
into Universitat Lul.liana de
Mallorca in the 17th century. The current
building – a project of the architect
Gabriel Alomar – has substituted
the original since 1950. The patio is of
the Baroque type, featuring an arcade
of round arches on Ionian columns.
Also of note on the main floor are
some windows divided by a mullion
and abutment. Open to the public.
Aus dem Estudi General Lul-lià wurde
im XVII Jahrhundert die Universitat
Lul·liana auf Mallorca. Das heutige

18th century and therefore conceived
as a whole unit without the courtyard
having any medieval traces. The plans

Majorcan Gaspar Palmer. The decorative
features are the work of the Italian
sculptor Antonio Soldatti. Open to

A building reformed by the first Marquis
of Reguer, Francesc Amer de
Montaner i Dameto. The patio’s capitals,
with the family coat of arms
(without the crown of a Marquis),
indicate that the patio must have
been built before 1739, the year in
which he was granted the status of
Marquis. The house was acquired in
the 19th century by the Blanes, who
were rich merchants, and who covered
two spans of the patio. Before
that time it would have been the
biggest in the city. It later formed part
of the property left by the musician
Josep Balaguer to Palma City Council.

In the 16th century and part of the
17th century, this magnificent building
belonged to the Santacíli family,
and to the Berga family from 1677
onwards, the first owner of this lineage
being Gabriel de Berga y Santacilia.
His son Gabriel de Berga i
Zaforteza, in approximately 1760
began a radical conversion of the
building. The patio is accessed
through a round arch emblazoned
with the Berga coat of arms by the
sculptor Juan Deyá. The patio is
flanked by a series of Baroque style
arches, which was deeply rooted in
the island. In 1942, the building was
sold to the Ministry of Justice, which
remains the current owner. Open to
the public.
Dieses herrliche Gebäude gehörte im
XVI und einem Teil des XVII Jh. der
Familie Santacíli, und seit dem Jahr
1677 im Besitz der Familie Berga; der
erste Besitzer dieser Dynastie war

A Gothic temple (XIV – XVI c.),
although the main gate is from the
late renaissance, finished in 1601,
the main façade is Neo-Gothic dat-

ing back to 1855. The south-facing
gate is clearly Gothic, from the XIV
century, while the north-facing gate,
of l’Almoina, is from the XV century.
La Seu (cathedral) has 6,600m2
of surface area and, according to the
initial plans, 87 windows and 7 rose
windows. Floor with three naves,
with a Gothic ribbed vault ceiling,
suspended by slender columns. On
the central apse one finds the chapel
of The Trinity, where the sepulchres
of the kings of Majorca Jaume II and
Jaume III are situated. The renovation
works by Antoni Gaudí, in
1904, eliminated the central choir
and recuperated the Gothic cathedral.
Currently, the chapel of Sant
Pere is being renovated under the
supervision of Miquel Barceló.

The Gothic church from the XIII century
was substituted by a baroque
temple, started in 1618 and renovated
in 1859. The church is based on a
single nave, with four side chapels
and an apse with trapezoidal form.
The chapels have a Gothic ribbed
vault roof. The nave has a half-barrel
roof design and that of the apse features
a truncated cone section with
pictorial decoration. The altarpiece is
presided over by an image of the Virgin
Mary and another of Sant Felip
Neri. Worthy also of mention is the
singular chapel of the Virgin de los
Dolores, which features a different
construction to the rest of the temple.
It is based on an octagonal floor
plan, with side chapels and retrochoir.
It was constructed in the XVI
century.
Die gotische Kirche aus dem 13. Jh.
wurde durch ein barockes Gotteshaus
ersetz. Die Errichtung begann
1618, und 1859 erfolgte der Umbau.

adjoins the church and the convent
is trapezoidal in shape with pointed
trefoil arches. The progression of
styles can be seen from the north
gallery, the first to be built, to the
one facing south, which was not finished
until the 15th century.

Gothic, 12th-16th centuries.
Neogothic reformation of the
façade, 1894-1924. This is one of
the first churches built after the
Catalan conquest. Other than the
Cathedral, it is the only gothic
church in Mallorca with three naves.
These are separated by two rows of
columns and have a groined vault
ceiling. The presbyter is polygonal
shaped with chapels and an unusual
apse aisle. The main altarpiece is
baroque. The side chapels feature
gothic paintings such as the Sleeping
Virgin, the Catlar altarpiece, as
well as the figures of the Sanskrit of
the Miracle and the Madonna, this
last one by Adrià Ferran. The
entrance on the main façade –
presided by a figure of Santa Eulàlia
– and the pointy, neogothic church
tower, were both designed by Joan
M. Sureda i Verí.

Santa Creu is one of the five
medieval parishes in the city. The
start of the works is documented as
1335. The church is based on a single
rectangular nave. This is flanked
by two side chapels that enclose the
presbytery and describe a semicircle.
An important piece is the Virgin
Mary with baby Jesus, from the XV
century, which is situated in a small
niche on the left wall of the chapel
of Saint Joseph. We shouldn’t forget
the chapel of Santo Cristo of
Santa Creu, the object of considerable
public devotion.
Die Kirche von Santa Creu ist eine der
5 mittelalt. Pfarrkirchen der Stadt.
Der Beginn der Bauarbeiten ist
urkundlich mit dem Jahr 1335

Built in the 13th century, the Santa
Clara Church was first altered in the
15th century. The building as it
stands today is the result of alterations
in the 17th century. However,
as these were basically confined to
architectural decoration, it is still
possible to see the medieval origins
of the church from its structure.
Apart from the portal - Baroque
style - and the top part of the belltower,
the design of the main
facade is Majorcan Gothic. The
Baroque elements of Majorcan convents
predominate in its interior.
Mit dem Bau der Klosterkirche von
Santa Clara wurde im 13. Jahrhundert
begonnen, im 15. Jahrhundert
erfolgten dann Umbauten. Die heutige
Gestalt nahm das Gebäude
aber erst im 17. Jahrhundert an.
Betrachten wir die Baustruktur des
Gotteshauses, sind die mittelalterlichen
Züge noch ersichtlich, denn
die Umbauten im 17. Jahrhundert
konzentrierten sich vor allem auf die
architektonische Verzierung. So
stellt sich die Hauptfassade im Stil
der mallorquinischen Gotik dar, mit
Ausnahme des Portals - in barocker
Baukunst - und des oberen Teils des
Glockenturms. Im Kircheninneren
überwiegen die barocken Formen
der mallorquinischen Klöster.

finished in 1452. Continuing the tradition
of the Catalan Gothic it comprises
one large area divided by
columns into three sections. The six
central columns have a circular base
and a spiralled shaft. La Llonja was
the model for a number of other
buildings with the same function,
notably that of Valencia. Despite its
generally austere lines, there are
Flemish and Burgundian influences
in some of the ornamental elements.

im Auftrag des Collegi de la Mercaderia

The main entrance to the Almudaina
Palace leads to the King’s (or
Honour) Courtyard. Here is the
Chapel of Santa Anna, which dates
from the early 14th century and is
attributed to Ponç Descoll. The
doorway to the Gothic chapel is in
the archaic Romanesque tradition,
with a semicircular arch resting on
capitals carved with scenes of
fabulous beasts. In the Palace Oratory,
the Chapel of St. Praxedis
with a figure dated 1458 is of interest,
as is the 14th century Tinell or
Throne Room, with its great pointed
arches which support a pointed
roof with two sloping sides, identical
to the one in the Palace of the
Kings of Mallorca in Perpignan.
Der Haupteingang des Palastes de
l’Almudaina führt zum Pati del
Rei bzw. d’Honor (Königs- bzw.
Ehrenhof). Hier befindet sich die
Kapelle der Heiligen Anna, die zu
Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts

gotischen Kapelle entspricht dem
archaisierenden, romanischen Stil
und hat Archivolten mit Rundbögen

Ferner ist besonders die Kapelle
der Heiligen Praxedis zu erwäh-

nen, deren Abbildungen aus dem
Jahr 1458 datieren sollen und der
Salón del Tinell bzw. Thronsaal
aus dem 14. Jahrhundert mit seinen
grossen Spitzbögen mit Scheidewand,
auf die sich ein Satteldach
stützt, das genauso ausgeführt
wurde, wie das des Palastes der
Könige von Mallorca in Perpignan.

The building houses the Sa Nostra
Cultural Centre, with exhibition and
concert halls where lectures, courses,
seminars, presentation of books etc.
are held. It has a courtyard typical of
the 18th century with segmental
arches and red marble Ionic columns.
The stairway, originally of two flights,
was lengthened in a 19th century
adaptation. The Modernist appearance
of the façade is the result of
reforms carried out by the architect
Jaume Alenyà in 1909.
In diesem Gebäude ist das Kulturzentrum
der Bank Sa Nostra untergebracht,
in dem Ausstellungen und
Vorträge unterschiedlichster Art
ebenso veranstaltet werden, wie
Konferenzen, Kurse, Seminare, Buchpräsentationen,
etc. Es hat einen für
das 18. Jahrhundert typischen Innenhof
mit niedriger gezogenen Bögen
und ionischen Säulen aus rotem Marmor.
Die Treppe, die ursprünglich
zwei Abschnitte hatte, wurde während
eines Umbaus im 19. Jahrhundert
verlängert. Die an den Jugendstil
erinnernde Ansicht der Vorderfront
ist das Werk eines weiteren Umbaus
durch den Architekten Jaume Alenyà
im Jahr 1909.

In the historic centre of Palma, close
to the Cathedral and the Almudaina
Palace, one can visit the March
Palace. Here there is a gallery housing
sculptures by Rodin, Chillida and
Henry Moore, among others; an 18th
century Neapolitan Nativity Scene;
murals by Josep Maria Sert; a collection
of Romanesque and Gothic carvings
entitled ‘Virgins of Europe’; an
exhibition of Gothic retables and
painted panels, ‘Art of the Cathedrals’.
There is also a room of Mallorquin
maps and the exhibition
‘Alchemy and Eternity’ by Dalí.
In der Altstadt von Palma, nahe der
Kathedrale und des Almudaina-
Palais’, kann auch der Palau March
besichtigt werden. Dieses Palais
beherbergt heute u.a. Skulpturen

SES VOLTES
PARC DE LA MAR, S/N
This old barracks was built between
1774 and 1801 under the direction
of Manuel Santander, Field Marshal
and engineer. The area was the last
bastion to be constructed and with it
the fifth and final walled zone of Palma.
It consists of a central courtyard
surrounded by the city walls, some of
which contain large rooms with barrel
vaulted ceilings, the characteristic
that give its name to this piece of
architecture. (Voltes = vaults). Ses
Voltes has belonged to the Council
since 1985 and at present is a civic
and cultural centre.
Dieses alte Quartier wurde zwischen
1774 und 1801 unter der Aufsicht
von Manuel Santander, Feldmarschall
und Ingenieur, erbaut. Auf derselben
Fläche wurde auch der letzte der insgesamt
fünf gebauten Schutzwälle
fertiggestellt, die die Stadt Palma mit
ihren Mauern umgibt. Im Inneren findet
sich ein Hof, in dessen Mauern
zum Teil grosse Säle eingebaut wurden,
die mit Tonnengewölben überdacht
sind und denen dieser Gebäudekomplex
auch seinen Namen verdankt:
Voltes = Gewölbe. Seit 1985
gehört Ses Voltes der Gemeinde Palma
und ist heute ein den Bürgern
und kulturellen Zwecken gewidmetes
Anwesen.

Headquarters of the ‘La Caixa’ Foundation.
The building was designed by
the Modernist architect Lluís
Domènec Montaner as a hotel, and
was built between 1901 and 1903.
Nonetheless, the decoration shows
oriental and Neo-gothic influences:
structures that crown the façade with
eagle figures, capitals with floral
designs, polychrome tiles... The Foundation
has a permanent exhibition of
the works of the painter Anglada
Camarasa and organises other temporary
exhibitions as well as a variety
of cultural activities in the theatre.

Gebäude wurde von dem berühmten
Jugendstil-Architekten Lluís Domènec
Montaner als Hotelgebäude entworfen.
Es wurde zwischen 1901 und
1903 erbaut. In der Ausführung des

Ausstellung des Malers Anglada

This was built by order of King Jaume
II of Mallorca. The builder’s name was
Ponç Descoll. It has a highly original
circular ground plan, with three
round towers, in addition to the main
Tower of Homage, which is both
round and outside the main castle
building. The central courtyard is very
large and surrounded by a double
arched gallery, with round arches on
the ground floor and lancet arches
on the second. The Museum of the
History of the City occupies five
rooms on the ground floor.
Das Kastell wurde auf Anordnung
des Königs von Mallorca, Jaume II.,
erbaut. Der Baumeister war Ponç
Descoll. Es ist ein sehr origineller
Rundbau mit 3 runden Türmen sowie
dem sog. Homenatge-Turm, der
ebenfalls rund gebaut wurde, aber
frei steht. Der Waffenhof hat grosse
Ausmasse und wird von einer doppelstöckigen
Galerie eingerahmt,
deren untere Reihe mit Rundbögen
geschmückt ist, während die zweite
Galerie Spitzbögen aufweist. Das
Museum für Stadtgeschichte (Museu
de Historia de la Ciudad) belegt 5
Säle im Erdgeschoss.

details that are to be seen in
the decoration of the courtyard and

The defensive fortification of the
harbour of Portopí, St. Carles Castle,
was built in the 18th century. The
museum was opened in 1981 and
has a collection of war and military
items ranging chronologically from
the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
It has five exhibition rooms
containing antique arms.
Die Verteidigungsanlage des Hafens
von Porto Pi, das Kastell Sant Carles,
wurde im 18. Jahrhundert erbaut.
Das Museum wurde 1981 eröffnet

the 2005 competition now show their
work in this exhibition which is on until
October 23 at the Ses Voltes Exhibition

MALLORQUIN ‘TURRÓN’
DER TURRÓN MALLORQUÍN
Christmas is a time of traditions and
family reunions throughout the
world, not just in Mallorca. But there
is one thing that makes the festivities
in Palma something special: traditional
Mallorquin ‘turrón’.
If a countryman is asked what the
star product of this island’s countryside
is he will almost certainly reply
that it is the almond. This is why the
image of almond trees in blossom has
become one of the inevitable clichés
of Mallorquin poetry. In Palma, the
arrival of spring has always been heralded
by the trees’ white blossom,
and the beginning of autumn would
come after the harvest of the fruit.
Naturally this is still the case.
Although the origins of the almond
might appear to lie in Asia, its cultivation
is characteristic of the entire
Mediterranean region.
And autumn changes into winter.
The cold starts to make its presence
felt in Palma around about Christmas
time. And it is then that the almond
comes into its own – when the
desserts of each dinner are crowned
by the two most typical types of turrón:
the drum of almonds, and the flat
turrón cake. In Mallorca these are
produced by craftsmen and can be
purchased in grocers’, bakers’, and
even shopping centres, as for years
now there have been brands which
have good distribution.
The drum of almonds is hard and
thin, with a colour not dissimilar to
that of honey. It is made by mixing
raw almond with sugar over heat.
When the sugar melts, the mixture
forms a sheet that on cooling is cut
into pieces. It is very sweet, very
good, and always ensnares those with
a sweet tooth. On the other hand, the
so called turrón cake is soft, although
it also mixes almond with sugar, to
which is added a little, a very little
grated lemon peel. The resulting
paste is covered by two fine layers of

The finished product is an essential
part of tradition in Palma and Mallorca,
and for many people Christmas
without turrón is not Christmas.
Fragte man einen Bauern nach dem
Star der landwirtschaftlichen Produkte,
so würde er wohl die Mandel nennen.
Deshalb ist auch das Bild des
blühenden Mandelbaums eines der
unausweichlichen Klischees der mallorkinischen
Poesie. In Palma
bestimmte die Mandelblüte den
Beginn des Frühlings und der Herbst
begann offiziell nach der Mandelernte.
Dies trifft auch heute noch zu. Der
Ursprung der Mandel ist allem
Anschein nach asiatisch, heute
jedoch wird sie im gesamten Mittelmeerraum
angebaut.
Vom Herbst zum Winter. Je näher
Weihnachten kommt, um so kälter
wird es in Palma. Zu dieser Zeit ist
die Krönung eines jeden Abendessens
der Nachtisch in der Form
zweier Arten von Turron: der Tambor
de Almendra und die Cocas de Turron.
Auf Mallorka werden sie handerklich
hergestellt und man kann
sie in kleinen Lebensmittelläden,
Bäckereien und sogar in großen
Supermärkten kaufen, da einige
Marken schon seit Jahren über eine
gute Distribution verfügen.
Der Tambor de Almendra ist hart
und dünn, und hat die Farbe von
Honig. Man bereitet ihn zu indem

man die rohen Mandeln über dem
Feuer mit Zucker mischt. Wenn der
Zucker schmilzt, nimmt die
Mischung die Form einer Scheibe
an, die man danach in Stücke schneidet.
Er ist sehr süß, sehr lecker und
niemand kann ihm widerstehen. Die
Coca de Almendra widerum ist
weich, ebenfalls eine Mischung aus
Mandeln und Zucker, jedoch mit
einer Spur geriebener Zitronenschale.
Diese Masse wird auf beiden Seiten
mit feinen Oblaten abgedeckt.
Das Ergebnis ist ein fester Bestandteil
der Tradition Palmas und Mallorkas,
denn eine Weihnacht ohne Turron
ware für viele keine Weihnacht.
