AN OPEN AIR SHOPPING CENTRE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
Calle San Miquel and the surrounding area offer a huge range of attractive propositions as
the extensive variety of shops is inseparable from pleasant bars and unique historical buildings.
There are always large numbers of buskers, mime artists, acrobats, landscape and portrait
painters 'open for business’.
Pedestrianised for most of its length, Calle Sant Miquel joins two of the city’s nerve centres:
Plaça Major and Avinguda Comte de Sallent. It starts just after the colonnade on one side
of the square, and in the street there are a large number of shops of all sorts, including opticians’,
chemists’ and shops selling shoes (children’s shoes too), perfume, lingerie, exclusive
labels of men’s and women’s fashion, young fashion, bedclothes and tablecloths, wedding
dresses, wools and embroidered goods, jewellery, clocks and watches, costume jewellery, as
well as gift and decoration shops.
There are still long established shops selling espadrilles and baskets, an establishment
founded in 1918 that sells all kinds of cloth, and other businesses with a long tradition: a
bookshop specialising in old maps and engravings of Mallorca (at the beginning of the
street), and a shop dealing in material for fine art (near the Avinguda Comte de Sallent).
A number of its shops are concentrated in the open air shopping centre “Los Geranis”
about half way down the street. For fresh foodstuffs, this area cannot be bettered, connected
as it is to Plaça Olivar, where there is a major municipal market. There is also a delicatessen,
ice cream parlours, sophisticated restaurants, and cafés with outside tables.

Die Calle Sant Miquel und ihre Umgebung beherbergen ein höchst interessantes Angebot
mit vielen Geschäften und netten Terrassen und einigen bemerkenswerten Monumenten.
Auch wird sie von Strassenmusikanten, Pantomimen, Jongleuren, Landschafts- und Portraitmalern
bevölkert.
Zum größten Teil Fußgängerzone, verbindet Sant Miquel zwei neuralgische Punkte der
Stadt: die Placa Major und die Avinguda Comte de Sallent. Sie beginnt an einer Seite des
Platzes und ist voller Schuhgeschäfte (auch für Kinder), Parfümerien, Kurzwaren, Damenund
Herrenmode exklusiver Marken, Jugendmode, Hausbekleidung, Hochzeitsmode, Wolle
und Stickwaren, Schmuck und Uhren, Modeschmuck, Optiker, Apotheken, Geschenkartikel
und Dekoration.
Auch existieren hier noch die alten Hanfschuhwerkstätten, ein 1918 gegründetes Warenhaus
mit allen Arten von Textilien und andere Unternehmen mit sehr langer Tradition: eine
Buchhandlung, die sich auf alten Landkarten und Radierungen Mallorkas spezialisiert hat
(am Anfang der Strasse) und das Geschäft mit Kunstmaterialien (zu den Avenidas hin).
Ein Teil des Angebots ist im Einkaufszentrum “Los Geranis”, unter freiem Himmel und auf
der Mitte des Strassenverlaufs, konzentriert. Was die Gastronomie angeht ist diese Zone
schwer zu überbieten, da sie mit der Placa de l’Olivar verbunden ist, an dem sich ein bedeutender
städtischer Markt befindet. Hier existieren auch Delikatessengeschäfte, Eisdielen,
exquisite Restaurants und Cafeterien mit Terrasse.

A SHOPPING STREET

BUILDINGS
Along the street there are a number
of admirable historic buildings, such
as the Museu d’Art Espanyol Contemporani.
(Museum of Contemporary
Spanish Art). The building dates back
to the 17th century, and has a magnificent
mosaic floor in the hall that is
the work of Lluis Bru Salelles. It also
has a marvellous staircase of white
marble with wrought iron banisters.
Further down the street is Sant Miquel
church, built on the plot where,
according to legend, Jaume I held the
first mass after his conquest of Madina
Mayurka. A little further on is the
church and cloister of Sant Antoniet,
built between 1729 and 1768 by the
Antonian order. Every Christmas a
lovely crib scene is set up in its spectacular
cloisters; admission is free.

MONUMENTEN
Entlang der Strasse sehen wir verschiedene
Monumente, wie das Museu
d’Art Espanyol Contemporani. Das
Gebäude stammt aus dem 17. Jh. und
hat einen wunderschönen Mosaikfußboden
im Vestibül, entworfen von
Lluis Bru Salelles, sowie eine weiße
Marmortreppe mit einem schmiedeeisernen
Geländer. Etwas weiter liegt
die Kirche von Sant Miquel, die auf
der Stelle steht, wo nach der Überlieferung
die erste Messe nach der Eroberung
der Madina Mayurga durch
Jaume I gehalten wurde. Dahinter die
Kirche und das Kloster von Sant Antoniet,
erbaut zwischen 1729 und 1768
von den Antonius Patern. In seinem
Kreuzgang wird jede Weihnacht eine
wunderschöne Krippe aufgebaut.
