A TRIBUTE FULL OF JOY
One of the great legends of contemporary
dance, Maurice Béjart, will
also be displaying his imagination in
Palma, in the form of movement.
With the performance of ‘The Presbytery’,
he will be paying tribute to
Freddie Mercury, the singer of
Queen, and to the dancer Jorge Donn,
both of whom fell victim to AIDS at
45 years of age.
This production, performed by
Béjart Ballet Lausanne and devised
by the revolutionary choreographer
at his 74 years of age to the strains of
Queen and Mozart, has been defined
by the maestro himself, as a “ballet
full of joy, not at all sinister or pessimistic”.
“I am sure that Freddie
Mercury will be seated at the piano
alongside Mozart in that no man’s
land we will all be going to one
day”, assures Béjart. The work was
premiered in Paris in 1977 with the
other members of Queen and Elton

John in the audience. The critics
hailed it as a magnificent illustration
of Béjart’s humanism, a celebration
of youth and life, an encounter with
death and love.
FRÖHLICHE HOMMENAGE
Eines der großen Mythen des zeitgenössischen
Tanzes, Maurice Béjart,
wird seine Vorstellungskraft in Palma
entfalten, in Form der Bewegung und
in Form einer Hommage, mittels Le
Presbytère, an den Sänger von Queen
Freddie Mercury und an den Tänzer
Jorge Donn, beide im Alter von 45
Jahren verstorben.
Diese vom Béjart Ballet Lausanne
getanzte und von dem revolutionären
Choreografen mit 74 Jahren erdachte
Choreografie, hat der Meister selbst
als “ein fröhliches, gar nicht finsteres
oder pessimistisches Ballet” mit
Musik von Queen und Mozart definiert.
“In diesem Niemandsland in
das wir alle eines Tages gehen werden
sitzt Freddie Mercury sicher mit
Mozart am Klavier” sagt Béjart.
Das Werk wurde 1997 in Paris mit in
Gegenwart der Musiker von Queen
und Elton John uraufgeführt. Die
Kritik bezeichnete es als grossartiges
Beispiel für den Humanismus
Béjarts, ein Fest der Jugend und des
Lebens, eine Begegnung mit dem
Tod und der Liebe.
