The building houses the Sa Nostra<br />
Cultural Centre, with exhibition and<br />
concert halls where lectures, courses,<br />
seminars, presentation of books etc.<br />
are held. It has a courtyard typical of<br />
the 18th century with segmental<br />
arches and red marble Ionic columns.<br />
The stairway, originally of two flights,<br />
was lengthened in a 19th century<br />
adaptation. The Mo<strong>de</strong>rnist appearance<br />
of the faça<strong>de</strong> is the result of<br />
reforms carried out by the architect<br />
Jaume Alenyà in 1909.<br />
In diesem Gebäu<strong>de</strong> ist das Kulturzentrum<br />
<strong>de</strong>r Bank Sa Nostra untergebracht,<br />
in <strong>de</strong>m Ausstellungen und<br />
Vorträge unterschiedlichster Art<br />
ebenso veranstaltet wer<strong>de</strong>n, wie<br />
Konferenzen, Kurse, Seminare, Buchpräsentationen,<br />
etc. Es hat einen für<br />
das 18. Jahrhun<strong>de</strong>rt typischen Innenhof<br />
mit niedriger gezogenen Bögen<br />
und ionischen Säulen aus rotem Marmor.<br />
Die Treppe, die ursprünglich<br />
zwei Abschnitte hatte, wur<strong>de</strong> während<br />
eines Umbaus im 19. Jahrhun<strong>de</strong>rt<br />
verlängert. Die an <strong>de</strong>n Jugendstil<br />
erinnern<strong>de</strong> Ansicht <strong>de</strong>r Vor<strong>de</strong>rfront<br />
ist das Werk eines weiteren Umbaus<br />
durch <strong>de</strong>n Architekten Jaume Alenyà<br />
im Jahr 1909.<br />

In the historic centre of <strong>Palma</strong>, close<br />
to the Cathedral and the Almudaina<br />
Palace, one can visit the March<br />
Palace. Here there is a gallery housing<br />
sculptures by Rodin, Chillida and<br />
Henry Moore, among others; an 18th<br />
century Neapolitan Nativity Scene;<br />
murals by Josep Maria Sert; a collection<br />
of Romanesque and Gothic carvings<br />
entitled ‘Virgins of Europe’; an<br />
exhibition of Gothic retables and<br />
painted panels, ‘Art of the Cathedrals’.<br />
There is also a room of Mallorquin<br />
maps and the exhibition<br />
‘Alchemy and Eternity’ by Dalí.<br />
In <strong>de</strong>r Altstadt von <strong>Palma</strong>, nahe <strong>de</strong>r<br />
Kathedrale und <strong>de</strong>s Almudaina-<br />
Palais’, kann auch <strong>de</strong>r Palau March<br />
besichtigt wer<strong>de</strong>n. Dieses Palais<br />
beherbergt heute u.a. Skulpturen<br />

Ferner ist dort eine neapolitanische<br />
Krippe aus <strong>de</strong>m 18. Jahrhun<strong>de</strong>rt<br />
zu sehen und die Wandmalereien<br />

sind die Sammlung gotischer und<br />
romanischer Marienstatuen ‘Vírgenes<br />
<strong>de</strong> Europa’ o<strong>de</strong>r ‘Arte <strong>de</strong> las Catedrales’<br />
(Kunst aus Kathedralen) mit einer<br />
Ausstellung von Altaraufsätzen und<br />
Tafelbil<strong>de</strong>rn aus <strong>de</strong>r Gotik sehr<br />
sehenswert. Schliesslich gibt es auch<br />
noch einen Saal, <strong>de</strong>r <strong>de</strong>r mallorquinischen<br />
Kartographie gewidmet ist<br />
und die Ausstellung ‘Alquimia y Eternidad’<br />
(Alchemie und Ewigkeit) von<br />
Dalí zu sehen.<br />

SES VOLTES<br />
PARC DE LA MAR, S/N<br />
This old barracks was built between<br />
1774 and 1801 un<strong>de</strong>r the direction<br />
of Manuel Santan<strong>de</strong>r, Field Marshal<br />
and engineer. The area was the last<br />
bastion to be constructed and with it<br />
the fifth and final walled zone of <strong>Palma</strong>.<br />
It consists of a central courtyard<br />
surroun<strong>de</strong>d by the city walls, some of<br />
which contain large rooms with barrel<br />
vaulted ceilings, the characteristic<br />
that give its name to this piece of<br />
architecture. (Voltes = vaults). Ses<br />
Voltes has belonged to the Council<br />
since 1985 and at present is a civic<br />
and cultural centre.<br />
Dieses alte Quartier wur<strong>de</strong> zwischen<br />
1774 und 1801 unter <strong>de</strong>r Aufsicht<br />
von Manuel Santan<strong>de</strong>r, Feldmarschall<br />
und Ingenieur, erbaut. Auf <strong>de</strong>rselben<br />
Fläche wur<strong>de</strong> auch <strong>de</strong>r letzte <strong>de</strong>r insgesamt<br />
fünf gebauten Schutzwälle<br />
fertiggestellt, die die Stadt <strong>Palma</strong> mit<br />
ihren Mauern umgibt. Im Inneren fin<strong>de</strong>t<br />
sich ein Hof, in <strong>de</strong>ssen Mauern<br />
zum Teil grosse Säle eingebaut wur<strong>de</strong>n,<br />
die mit Tonnengewölben überdacht<br />
sind und <strong>de</strong>nen dieser Gebäu<strong>de</strong>komplex<br />
auch seinen Namen verdankt:<br />
Voltes = Gewölbe. Seit 1985<br />
gehört Ses Voltes <strong>de</strong>r Gemein<strong>de</strong> <strong>Palma</strong><br />
und ist heute ein <strong>de</strong>n Bürgern<br />
und kulturellen Zwecken gewidmetes<br />
Anwesen.<br />

Headquarters of the ‘La Caixa’ Foundation.<br />
The building was <strong>de</strong>signed by<br />
the Mo<strong>de</strong>rnist architect Lluís<br />
Domènec Montaner as a hotel, and<br />
was built between 1901 and 1903.<br />
Nonetheless, the <strong>de</strong>coration shows<br />
oriental and Neo-gothic influences:<br />
structures that crown the faça<strong>de</strong> with<br />
eagle figures, capitals with floral<br />
<strong>de</strong>signs, polychrome tiles... The Foundation<br />
has a permanent exhibition of<br />
the works of the painter Anglada<br />
Camarasa and organises other temporary<br />
exhibitions as well as a variety<br />
of cultural activities in the theatre.<br />
Sitz <strong>de</strong>r Stiftung La Caixa. Das<br />
Gebäu<strong>de</strong> wur<strong>de</strong> von <strong>de</strong>m berühmten<br />
Jugendstil-Architekten Lluís Domènec<br />

Kapitellen mit floralen Motiven o<strong>de</strong>r<br />
vielfarbigen Kacheln krönen... Die<br />
Stiftung beherbergt eine ständige<br />
Ausstellung <strong>de</strong>s Malers Anglada<br />
Camarasa und organisiert wechseln<strong>de</strong><br />
Ausstellungen sowie verschie<strong>de</strong>ne<br />
Veranstaltungen kultureller Art in seiner<br />
Aula.<br />

CASTELL DE BELLVER<br />

This was built by or<strong>de</strong>r of King Jaume<br />
II of Mallorca. The buil<strong>de</strong>r’s name was<br />
Ponç Descoll. It has a highly original<br />
circular ground plan, with three<br />
round towers, in addition to the main<br />
Tower of Homage, which is both<br />
round and outsi<strong>de</strong> the main castle<br />
building. The central courtyard is very<br />
large and surroun<strong>de</strong>d by a double<br />
arched gallery, with round arches on<br />
the ground floor and lancet arches<br />
on the second. The Museum of the<br />
History of the City occupies five<br />
rooms on the ground floor.<br />
Das Kastell wur<strong>de</strong> auf Anordnung<br />
<strong>de</strong>s Königs von Mallorca, Jaume II.,<br />
erbaut. Der Baumeister war Ponç<br />
Descoll. Es ist ein sehr origineller<br />
Rundbau mit 3 run<strong>de</strong>n Türmen sowie<br />
<strong>de</strong>m sog. Homenatge-Turm, <strong>de</strong>r<br />
ebenfalls rund gebaut wur<strong>de</strong>, aber<br />
frei steht. Der Waffenhof hat grosse<br />
Ausmasse und wird von einer doppelstöckigen<br />
Galerie eingerahmt,<br />
<strong>de</strong>ren untere Reihe mit Rundbögen<br />
geschmückt ist, während die zweite<br />
Galerie Spitzbögen aufweist. Das<br />
Museum für Stadtgeschichte (Museu<br />
<strong>de</strong> Historia <strong>de</strong> la Ciudad) belegt 5<br />
Säle im Erdgeschoss.<br />
