Mass Media and Public Opinion

In this course, we will study the role of the mass media in United States politics.
Focusing upon the news media as a political institution, we will study how the media
influence American public opinion. One focus of the course will be explaining the
ingredients of public opinion, with attention to the importance of elite cues from media
public figures. Another focus will be the American media landscape with the rise of
the new digital media, and changes in the strategic interactions between political and
media establishments.
Course Text:
Reading assignments will be provided by the instructor.
Course Requirements:
Regular attendance and participation in class discussions. Students will be expected
to prepare an oral presentation and write an essay.
