The 21st century marks a milestone in the
history of mankind. It is not the really large
centres with their long journey times, overcrowding,
high rental costs and environmental
problems that are ahead in this
competition.
Oberbergisch district with its rural quality of
life, healthy environment and nevertheless a
central location with favourable transport
links in the geographical triangle between
Cologne, Düsseldorf and Dortmund can play
out its class here and maintain economic
growth and prosperity thanks to its healthy
small- and medium-sized companies.
With innovative urban development projects,
such as the Steinmüller Gelände on the
former industrial district, with teaching and
research on the Gummersbach Campus and
the specific engineering work carried out by
Germany's leading companies in engineering
and IT services – The ABLE GROUP –
everything is brought together in an optimum
manner in terms of content and geographical
scope.
The structure of highly innovative family
companies that has evolved with their consistent
expansion of science and research
makes Oberbergisch district also particularly
interesting for skilled workers and specialists.
The intensive local training and further
education, such as the Steinmüller Education
Centre (Steinmüller Bildungszentrum), the
Health Academy (Gesundheitsakademie) or
the private vocational school (Berufsschule
Bergischer Unternehmen) in Hückeswagen,
go hand in hand with the district's well-structured
education initiative.
Compatibility of Work and Family
Oberbergisch district and its associated
towns and communities have also joined
forces on a common working platform, Oberberg
Demographic Forum, to face up to the
specific challenges of demographic change.
The companies in the region have also recognised
early on the relevance of a healthy social
environment and the need for action in
times of demographic change. The compatibility
of work and family is implemented in
concrete terms on a district scale.

represents. The fluctuation of

Was macht Oberberg aus?
Sallmann: In wirtschaftlicher Hinsicht die vielen
Familienunternehmen. Hier werden Werte
gelebt. Die Bezahlung muss natürlich stimmen,
aber es ist schon ein Unterschied ob Sie
in einem Konzern oder in einem Familienbetrieb
arbeiten. Gerade in der Krise hat sich gezeigt,
dass der inhabergeführte Betrieb seine
Fachkräfte so lange wie möglich im Betrieb
behält - was übrigens erheblich zur Bewältigung
der Schwierigkeiten beigetragen hat.
Hagt: Ein Großteil der Betriebe im Oberbergischen
gehört zum produzierenden Gewerbe.
Wir haben viele Arbeitnehmer mit
technischem Bezug. Die überwiegend aus
der Region stammenden Fachkräfte sind
hervorragend ausgebildet.
Sallmann: Nicht umsonst sagt man dem
Oberberger ein Tüftler-Gen nach. Die Patentdichte
hier ist schon enorm und der
Spruch: Das kann ich besser - hat auch
heute noch Bestand.
Hagt: Durch Initiativen wie Zukunft durch Innovation,
die Herbstakademie oder die konsequente
Begleitung beim Übergang von Schule
zu Beruf unterstützen wir den Einstieg in
die MINT-Fächer und -Berufe. In der Ausbildungsinitiative
Oberberg haben sich Partner
wie der Kreis, die IHK, das Handwerk, das
Jobcenter u. a. zusammengeschlossen um gemeinsam
die Schnittstellen zwischen Schule
und Beruf zu koordinieren und zu optimieren.
Sallmann: In einem Expertenpool helfen
zudem über 60 Unternehmen den Schülern,
den richtigen Einstieg in die Ausbildung - und
damit in das Berufsleben zu finden. Wir praktizieren
das seit Jahren und haben so, vor den
gerade gestarteten Strategien in Bund und
Land, einen enormen Vorsprung.
Hagt: In unsere Berufskollegs haben wir
zweistellige Millionensummen investiert
um vor Ort eine solide Wissensbasis zu
vermitteln.
Aber natürlich sind auch wir darauf angewiesen,
durch Heben der Frauenbeschäftigungsquote
und die Integration von
Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund ins
Berufsleben, die Fachkräftesituation zu
verbessern.
Sallmann: In diesem Jahr starten wir dazu
die Fachkräfte Strategie Oberberg – bei dem
wiederum alle Akteure an einem Strang
ziehen. Auch ein Vorteil von Oberberg.
Kurze Wege, Vertrauen in- und aufeinander,
hier spielt keiner die erste Geige. Kooperation
ist hier Praxis.
Hagt: Wir bündeln die Ressourcen. An
einer One-Stop-Agency, einer sowohl inhaltlich-strategischen
aber auch räumlichen
Kooperation aller Partner, wird mit
Hochdruck gearbeitet.
Sallmann: In Schlagdistanz zu Köln kann
das Oberbergische sein Tüftler-Gen pflegen
und dennoch global unterwegs sein.
Hagt: Wir gehören zur Region Köln/Bonn
und profitieren von ihrem Bekanntheitsgrad,
denn unsere zahlreichen Weltmarktführer
stecken zwar mit ihren
Produkten in der Marssonde, den U-Booten
und fast jedem Cabrio, aber kaum
einer weiß das.
Aus vielen Einpendlern der Region, die hier
hochinteressante Arbeitsplätze haben, sind
Einwohner geworden. Diesen Trend möchten
wir weiter forcieren.

What sets Oberberg apart?
Sallmann: In economic terms, the large number
of family companies. Values are lived and
breathed here. Pay needs to be appropriate,
of course, but there is a big difference between
working in a corporate group or a family
business.
Hagt: The majority of companies in Oberbergisch
district are in the manufacturing
sector. We have lots of employees with a
technical background. The skilled workers,
most of whom come from the region, are
highly trained.
Sallmann: It's no wonder that people from
Oberberg are said to have an inventor's gene.
The wealth of patents here is immense and
the saying: I can do better than that - still applies
today.
Hagt: We have invested a two-figure million
sum in our vocational schools to provide a
solid local knowledge base.
Sallmann: A further advantage of Oberberg.
Short communication channels, trust and
confidence in each other - nobody calls the
tunes here. Cooperation is the norm here.
Within striking distance of Cologne, Oberbergisch
district can foster the inventor's
gene yet still be globally active.
Hagt: We are part of the Cologne/Bonn region
and benefit from its popularity because
our numerous global market leaders have
products that are used in the Mars space
probe, submarines and virtually every cabriolet,
but hardly anyone knows that. The many
commuters to the region who have extremely
interesting jobs have now become residents.
We want to further enhance this trend.
