Naturally, the headlines in newspapers and economic journals about the steel boom in autumn 2006 reflect the situation on the world market in a pointed and thus imperfect way. Nevertheless: Anybody who struggles through the papers soon hears the enormous rustling. There is simmering and bubbling not only in the furnaces throughout the world, but also on the bosses’ floors of the corporate groups – mainly in Europe and in the United States. ASSAULT FROM ASIA Whoever had a sharp eye on the world steel summit in Buenos Aires recently could state that the good mood about splendid business has long since been substantially clouded by the anxiety about a further concentration in the raw material business. The hurrying-ahead of “new-rich” steel barons from faw-away Asia, e.g. the take-over poker between the Indian tycoon Mittal Steel and the European old bull Arcelor, but above all the booming demand in China and India excite many a stock exchange operator. And anyhow: The steel year 2006 promises to be one of the best during the last few decades. According to forecasts of the International Iron and Steel Institute, the world- wide production will increase by 9 percent to 1.2 billion tons, for 2007, a plus of 5 percent is forecasted after all. In Germany, too, an increase of steel production by a good 4 percent to 46.5 million tons is expected – which is the highest raw steel production since the German reunification. According to Dieter Ameling, President of the German Steel Federation (WV Stahl), there will not be a considerable drawback in 2007. Indeed the global automotive industry - swallowing about 11 percent of the world-wide steel consumption – must reckon with rising prices. For given the booming demand, the steel-producing companies naturally want to pass on their dramatically increased costs for ore, coke, and scrap metal. At any rate, at the Steel Conference in Argentina there were the first hints pointing to a price increase of probably 10 to 12 percent. MORE LOADING VOLUME FOR STEEL Left to say that WV Stahl assumes an increase of the total truck weight to at least 44 tons. The industry transports 27 million tons of steel by lorry every year; 17 million tons of it products. A raised weight limit would result in more efficient loads and thus in less traffic. WV Stahl therefore supports an initiative of the Federation of German Industries (BDI) concerning the introduction of higher lorry dimensions and weights. 22 trailerforum 4/2006
ZWEI FRAGEN AN … Am 19. und 20. Oktober 2006 fand in Salzgitter der KRONE Workshop Stahllogistik statt. trailerforum sprach mit dem Vortragenden, Dipl.-Ing. Frank Nordhoff, Konstruktion, Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone, über den Stahlmarkt.* trailerforum: Ein Schwerpunkt Ihrer Präsentation auf dem Workshop „Stahllogistik“ war das Thema Ladungssicherung. Beruht dieser Fokus auf Erfahrungen von Stahltransporteuren? Frank Nordhoff: Die im Fahrzeugbau integrierte Coilmulde ist eine KRONE-Innovation, die bereits 1973 in Zusammenarbeit mit Thyssen präsentiert wurde. Sie brachte revolutionäre Sicherheitsverbesserungen bei Coiltransporten und ist aus der modernen Coillogistik nicht mehr wegzudenken. Auch die heute in Serie gefertigte Coilwannenlänge von 7.200 mm resultiert aus den Anforderungen des Marktes an Gewichtsoptimierung bei gleichzeitiger Flexibilität der Fahrzeuge. Das System MultiFix ist ebenfalls in Kooperation mit Stahl-Langmaterialherstellern und Transporteuren entwickelt worden. trailerforum: Welches sind die wichtigsten Vorteile der Ladungssicherung „Made by KRONE“? Frank Nordhoff: Die Coilwanne senkt den Fahrzeugschwerpunkt und bewirkt in Kombination mit Steckungen, Multilock-Außenrahmen und Schwerlastzurrösen eine bestmögliche Sicherung der Ladung. Sollte es erforderlich sein, kann auch beim Coil Liner das gesamte KRONE-Ladungssicherungsprogramm (MultiBlock, MultiWall etc.) zum E<strong>ins</strong>atz gebracht werden. Bei Verwendung von Standard-Sattelanhängern in der Stahllogistik sorgt die Kombination mit KRONE-MultiFix für eine zertifizierte Ladungssicherung beim Transport von Langmaterial wie Rundstahl und Stahlrohren sowie bei Stahlblechen. * Einen ausführlichen Bericht über den Workshop lesen Sie in der nächsten Ausgabe von trailerforum. // TWO QUESTIONS ADDRESSED TO … On 19 th and 20 th October 2006, the KRONE Steel Logistics Workshop took place in Salzgitter. trailerforum interviewed the lecturer, Dipl.-Ing. Is this focus based on experiences made by MÄRKTE & POLITIK | COLUMN steel transporting companies? Frank Nordhoff: The coil well integrated into the vehicle structure is a KRONE innovation which was presented in 1973 in cooperation with Thyssen. It involved revolutionary improvements in transport safety when transporting coils and modern coil logistics could not be imagined without it any more. Today's standard coil well length of 7,200 mm is a result of the market requirements concerning weight optimisation and at the same time vehicle flexibility. The MultiFix system was also developed in cooperation with the manufacturers of long steel products and carriers. trailerforum: Which are the most important advantages of load securing “made by KRONE”? Frank Nordhoff: The coil tub lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity and, in combination with plug-in posts, Multilock external frame and heavy-load strapping eyelets, brings about the best possible load securing. If required, it is also possible with the Coil Liner to use the whole range of KRONE load securing products (MultiBlock, MultiWall etc.). When using standard semitrailers in steel logistics, the combination with KRONE MultiFix ensures a certified load securing when transporting long steel products as round steel and steel pipes or steel plates. * You will find a detailed report about the workshop in the next issue of trailerforum. trailerforum 4/2006 23
